A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also
had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my
country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马), had to be sold. Feeling
helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my
home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an
old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse, Cowboy, was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and
knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I
never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members
rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were
quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the
racing events. I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛), an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to
complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the events. She always won the blue ribbons.
Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She
didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the
whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(竞技
场). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way
home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the
gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of
barrels, finishing the course with ease.

My turn finally came.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show.
答案
One possible version:
My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the
delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy’s big red
neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped
around it and with perfect precision rounded the second and thundered on to the third. We
tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprising
silence. With the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time.
Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy horse!I gained much more than a blue
ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I’d always become a winner if I wanted something
badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.

Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out the window at the foggy field below. “NO!”
she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow, was in Mama’s daisy(雏菊) field.
I must have forgotten to fasten the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweatshirt
over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets at the fair next week. But
Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the rope hanging on the porch. “Why can’t you behave
yourself?” she shouted at Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy field.
Buttermilk stood nipping (啃咬) tender flowers off their stems. Taylor rushed to the cow.
Angry and anxious, she thought to herself: “When I grow up, I’ll be an artist and paint
pictures all day. I’ll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”
Just as Taylor was about to snap the rope onto Buttermilk’s collar, the family dog, Red,
rounded the corner of the house. Buttermilk couldn’t stand Red.
Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through
the open gate and into the field.
“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the latch (门栓).
She turned to look at the flower garden. Most of the daisies were either eaten or crushed.
Mama came out of the house. “What’s going on?” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
“I forgot to latch the gate,” Taylor said. “I’m so sorry.”
“I know you are,” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson
today.”
Taylor’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make
up for the loss.

One possible version:
A painting on the wall caught Taylor’s eye.“That’s it,”she whispered. Taylor raced upstairs.
She grabbed her art supplies, sat down at her desk and looked out of the window at the
remaining daisies below. As her brush moved smoothly across the paper, daisies came alive.
Totally lost in painting, Taylor made one painting after another. To keep it a secret, every day
Taylor locked herself in her room, committed to painting more, which Buttermilk couldn’t eat
any more. Of course, never had she forgotten to lock the gate since then. By the end of the
week, she had completed two dozen paintings. Appreciating her great masterpieces, she
couldn’t contain her excitement, jumping and clapping,“I made it.”
On the morning of the fair, Taylor said,“Mama, I have a surprise for you upstairs.” Out
hurried Taylor, who exclaimed excitedly. Mama managed a weak smile.“Really? Let’s see
it.” Instantly they reached Taylor’s bedroom, and Taylor opened the door. What greeted them
were daisy paintings everywhere, bright and cheerful in the morning light. “Wow,”said
Mama, unable to utter more words.“Do you think anyone will buy them, Mama?”“Oh, yes,
sweetie. I’m sure they will. And you have learned a better lesson than I expected,”Mama
smiled.

In the fall of 2013, I was in fourth grade and my brother Mitch was in second. When many
students had puppies, of course we wanted one too!
“Mom, can we get a puppy?” I begged her.
“Well,” she said, “it’s a lot of work, so maybe when you are older.”
“But I’m already ten. I’m old enough to look after a puppy,” I said confidently.
“Yes, we should get a puppy!” echoed Mitch. “Everyone else at school has a puppy,” he
exaggerated (夸张). Then Mom had to repeat what she had just said: We could get a puppy
when we were a little bit older. Both Mitch and I were disappointed.

The next day, before getting ready for school, we ran into the kitchen, where Mom was
preparing breakfast, and packing our lunches for school. With one voice, Mitch and I said,
“We are a little bit older. Can we get a puppy now?” Mom smiled and said, “We will talk
about it tonight with your dad, now go and get dressed!” We ran quickly into our room and
got ready for school, anxious to get the day over so we could talk about the puppy we were
going to get.
That afternoon, as soon as Mitch and I got home from school, we asked Mom once more
when we could talk about getting a puppy. Mom reminded us, “We’ll talk about it when your
dad gets home from work, okay?” “Okay,” we both said and Mitch followed by asking,
“When will Dad be home?” Mom told us that Dad would be home at about 7 o’clock and that
we could talk to him after we got our homework done and all ready for supper.
7 o’clock came super slow. And it was not until 7:05 that I heard the key turn and the door
open. I jumped up from the chair, and raced to greet Dad at the door.
“Dad!” I exclaimed. “Come on, come to the table so we can decide if we can get a puppy!”
“Okay,” Dad said as he came into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Then Mitch and I
brought out all the reasons we could think of to persuade Dad to be on our side.

were eagerly expecting the big day to come.
One afternoon, we returned from school to find a puppy running in the yard.“It’s a reward for
your good behavior last month,”Mom said.“Hi, Luckie!”Mitch and I were overjoyed and we
greeted the puppy excitedly. The little dog, wagging its tail happily, looked at us with the

It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was

My wife, Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧) gifts.
This always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or on my birthday, never knowing what form
of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders of the wrapping paper.
Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I
was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The
excitement of the moment just beamed across her face. It was everything she could do to keep
herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally, I came to the last gift and
with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With
everyone looking on, I decided to go ahead and get it over with—just let them have their
laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday
guests started giggling as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face and
blurted out (脱口而出), “A toy airplane? Are you kidding me?”
Brenda gave me the look—that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong
and should have given it a second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag before I
opened the present to see who it was from. As I picked up the paper from the floor and read
the name tag, my heart sank.

On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad, Love Christy”. Seeing her joy replaced by a
look of total embarrassment and humiliation, I was seized by a strong sense of regret and
pain. She slowly lowered her head down, seemingly praying that nobody would discover
whom the gift came from. Without hesitation, I knelt down and embraced Christy tightly,
trying to take back those words. I explained I had thought it was from Mom, but since it came
from her, that made it different. However, no matter what I said, it could hardly remove the
disappointment in her eyes and hurt in her heart. Confronted with the embarrassing situation,
I was at a loss what to do.
Staring at the gift, I suddenly thought of a way to cheer her up. I took that toy airplane in my
hand, turned on its switch and flew the plane. At the sight of the flying plane, I yelled with
excitement, which amused other children who eagerly asked for a try. My eyes resting on
Christy, I deliberately ignored their enthusiasm, flying the plane around her.“Let me try it
first!” It wasn’t long before Christy believed it was really a charming gift and grabbed for the
plane, a big smile radiating from her face. From then on, I kept the little plane as a reminder
of my girl’s love and also, the power of words.

My father is a hard-working and friendly man. He taught me to drive, play baseball and fish

For most of my teen years, he didn’t speak to his younger brother, although they were at

I was never sure why my dad was so angry with my uncle in the first place. They spent many
festivals sitting at opposite ends of the table. It was simply something that we all accepted at

his back to us. Casually, my mom remarked how nice it was for the doctor to come by to see
my dad so early in the morning.
But through my misty eyes, something about the scene surprised me. The man with his back

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before
college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options:
becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business
degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine and business. I couldn’t
decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to
experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital.
After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the
world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going
work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The
experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The
days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless
duties, and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the
next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing
atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and

The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples in the

“Don’t look so sad,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned around to see a tall, blond, blue-

“Rima Datta.”
“And how old are you, Rima?”
“Fourteen, sir,” I replied lifting myself out of the water. Ken was a swimming coach from
California and asked me about my life as a swimmer until then.
My eldest brother Anil had taught me how to swim, but I had no real training until I was nine
when a coach from the National Institute of Sports came for just three months a year to train
the boys at Mayo College, where our father taught. She set aside a couple of hours a week for
the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to
take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National
Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in summer. The training was hard, and I felt quite
lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken, with his tireless
enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with
immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet
he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and steady coaching.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He
even helped find a host family for me.

As we came down to breakfast that morning, with very shiny faces and clean aprons, we
found Father alone in the dining-room.
“Happy New Year, Papa! Where is Mother?” we cried.
“A little boy came begging and said his family was starving at home, so your mother went to
see and...Ah, here she is.”
As Papa spoke, in came Mamma, looking very cold, rather sad, and very much excited.
“Children, don’t begin till you hear what I have to say,” she cried and we sat staring at her,
with the breakfast untouched before us.
“Not far away from here, lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children are
huddled into one bed to keep from freezing, for they have no fire. There is nothing to eat over
there; and the oldest boy came here to tell me they were starving on this bitter cold day. My
little girls, will you give them your breakfast as a New Year’s gift?”
We sat silent for a minute, and looked at the nice, hot porridge, creamy milk, and good bread
and butter.
“I wish we’d eaten it up,” I thought, for I was rather a selfish child, and very hungry.
“I’m so glad you came before we began,” said Nan, cheerfully.
“May I go and help carry it to the poor, little children?” asked Beth, who had the tenderest
heart.
“I can carry the pot,” said little May, proudly giving the thing she loved best.
“And I shall take all the porridge,” I burst out, heartily ashamed of my first feeling.

We were soon ready and set out. With May and Beth carrying the pot and I holding the

Then a shabby house appeared and we popped in. What greeted our eyes shocked us: At one

Seeing the house totally in a mess, we fell to work immediately. May helped sweep the floor.

Having been teaching anthropology (人类学) at Dartmouth College for 15 years, I still
remember the day when I first encountered Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa, a
very important book on the study of the social and cultural development of peoples.
When I was fourteen, I earned money in the summer by mowing lawns, and within a few
weeks I had built up a body of customers. I got to know people by the flowers they planted,
by the things they lost in the grass or stuck in the ground on purpose. I learned something
about the measure of my neighbors by their preferred method of payment: by the job, by the
month—or not at all.
Mr. Ballou fell into the last category, and he always had a reason. On one day, he had no
change for a fifty, on another he was simply out when I knocked on his door. Still, except for
the money, he was a nice enough old guy, always waving his hat when he’d seen me from a
distance. Sure, I kept track of the total, but I didn’t worry about the amount too much.
Then, one late afternoon in mid-July, the hottest time of the year, I was walking by his house
and he opened the door, stopped me and let me in. The hall was cool, shaded, and it took me a
minute to adjust to the dim light.
“I owe you,” said Mr. Ballou. “But...”
I thought I’d save him the trouble of thinking of a new excuse. “No problem. Don’t worry
about it.”
“The bank made a mistake in my account,” he continued, ignoring my words. “It will be
cleared up in a day or two. But in the meantime I thought perhaps you could choose one or
two volumes for a down payment.”
He gestured toward the walls and I saw that books were stacked (堆放) everywhere. It was
like a library.

and absorbed in reading all those vivid characters and the elegant language.
To this day, thirty years later, I clearly remember this experience. Now I am a teacher

shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to save money so I could buy groceries
and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He
wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It
was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a
mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and
makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s
just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers
often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by
the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away
from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to
care much, either. I looked at the man closely then—bare hands grasping a piece of
cardboard, snot(鼻涕)frozen on his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling
because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help him. I pulled over to the man and
handed him a five-dollar bill.

I immediately called my husband but he didn’t answer. I called two more times saying
“please answer the phone” to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I
got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water.

Susquehanna River and protected farmland on all sides. Perfect!
Except...
“You know where it is, right?” the realtor(房地产经纪人)warned when I called the next
morning. Only two houses were down there. Everything else, for hundreds of acres, was open
farmland. No police, no local government, not even a grocery store. The only place within
fifteen miles to buy food was a one-room shop in the back of an Amish farm. If we moved
there, he warned, we’d be completely on our own.
Whatever. It had to be better than our apartment here, right?
We pulled into the dirt driveway to find horses eating grass along the fence, flowers blooming
by the stream, and an Amish farmer rumbling(轰鸣着缓慢行进)past in a steel-wheeled truck.
Unbelievable! We threw open the car doors, excitedly talking about the wonderful view.

Ellen Kalish runs the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in New York. She is used to getting calls
about taking in wild animals. When a man called asking if she could rescue an owl(猫头鹰),
she was happy to help. Then, the caller told her where this tiny owl was hiding. It was found
inside the Christmas tree in the Rockefeller Center, where it is a yearly tradition to decorate
trees. But this year, the tree looked a little worse. Many people made fun of its sagging(低垂
的)branches. They called the tree a “symbol of 2020”, meaning its sad look reminded them
how tough the past year was.
The tale of the owl’s rescue quickly became the highlight of this year’s tree. Before the tree
was put up to decorate, one of the workers spotted the creature. It was buried in the base of
the tree. The owl most likely traveled with the tree on its journey to Manhattan. So, how did it
end up sticking in the tree in the first place?
Kalish offered a few possibilities. The owl could have flown to the tree to hide there because
it was injured and then got trapped later. Or maybe once the tree was loaded onto a truck, the
branches squeezed it into the trunk. The bird may have just been too scared to move.
Actually, there is no proof of where it came from. “That would be the last place it would want
to go. Why would it pick that tree if it had a choice not to? It’s smart and it wouldn’t do that,”
she explained.
In that case, the worker had to bring the owl home. He decided to find a place that rescues
wild animals. That was why he called the Center. After Kalish got the full story about the
bird, she met the man at a gas station. Then the man handed her a box with the owl inside.

her. “It’s a miracle! How did this bird survive this trip?”She named the owl Rockefeller, or
“Rocky”.“It was super hungry,”she said, estimating that it probably had not been able to eat
or drink for at least a few days. She immediately gave it water and food—a few frozen mice
—which it ate quickly. A veterinarian examined it, and X-rays showed that it had no broken
bones or inner damage. By Thursday, Rocky started to bathe itself—a sign that it was feeling
good.
Several days passing, the owl looked in good shape. On Friday, Kalish moved Rocky to an
outdoor practice cage so it could get used to new circumstance and Kalish could monitor its
flight. By Tuesday at dusk, it seemed ready to go. Kalish brought Rocky to a clearing in
nearby forest, removed it from its carrier and raised it toward the sky. Rocky sat on Kalish’s
hand for several moments, surveying its surroundings. Then, it flew off, settling in a nearby
pine tree.

and he was too weak to get up.
The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn’t want to go out in

flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).
“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold

While the vet treated the sores carefully, I tried to drop water in his mouth and fed him with
food bit by bit. I never gave up hope of getting him saved. Many times I would caress his
neck, whispering something in his ear to encourage him to hold on. He was so weak that he
had to stay in the vet’s.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet’s, Shep welcomed me with wild
enthusiasm. He wagged his tail from left to right as if to say “Thank you”. He was gaining
strength and improving for the better. Tears filling my eyes, I knew all our efforts were
worthwhile. Soon, the dog recovered from severe sores and I adopted him and took him

On Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing with his father at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine.

When the father finished his run, he headed to the parking lot to wait for his son. However,
Nicholas didn’t show up.
It turned out that a fierce snowstorm had swept into the area as Nicholas was on his way
down. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path and ventured down the west side
of the mountain. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost and all alone. His way back to the ski
trails was blocked. What’s worse, he didn’t have any food or water with him, let alone his cell
phone or other supplies. The sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about Bear Grylls’
survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch on TV. In the show, Grylls was abandoned
in a wild area and had to help himself out. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop moving around. He needed the energy, and the winds weren’t as strong in
the valley where he stood as they were up on the mountain. Plus, there was a better chance of
someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the
freezing wind and snow. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass
of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a
blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
When evening came, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate some snow and drank some water
from nearby stream so that he wouldn’t dehydrate (脱水). Then he returned to his cave and
slept.
