专题七 细节理解
Passage 1
The library is one of the most popular places in a western university. Students turn to it for
research, conversations about class, and many other services.
Compared with Chinese college libraries, college libraries in the US and UK tend to offer
more resources. A postgraduate at Yale University can borrow as many as 225 books at a
time.
In addition to borrowing books, there are online and electronic resources. These include
databases of popular and academic material, such as LexisNexis Academic, which offers
items from newspapers and magazines.
Although books and articles are the items that students ask for most frequently, some libraries
provide audio and video recordings, maps and sheet music(活页乐谱). At some schools,
teachers and tutors put electronic copies of their teaching PPTs on the library’s website to
give the students easier access to the resources.
Another useful service in Western college libraries is Interlibrary Loan. This allows a student
at one school to borrow books from another school. The loan request is made through the
student’s college library, which gets the book, gives it to the user, and arranges for its return.
Technology has brought more services to students and has made libraries attractive. Some
universities have services for students to send messages through the computer or mobile texts
to ask the library staff for information.
Earlier this year, Harvard University introduced a new Scan & Deliver service, allowing
students to make requests for parts of books and articles. Requests made through the system
are handled by library staff. The student receives an e-mail with an Internet link to the
scanned pages. The service is free and all material comes within four days.
It used to be that libraries didn’t allow food or drinks. But that rule is changing and many of
them now contain a cafe so students can spend as much time as they want in the library.

Passage 2
On a cold winter day in Denver, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the co-
author of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series and the author of The Success
Principles. What Jack had become was a version of what I wanted to be.
During his talk, Jack took out his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, “Who
wants this?”
Hands shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would choose. But I
ran up the stairs to the stage and grabbed the bill from his hand. He turned to me and said,
“Yes, that’s it! Instead of waiting around for opportunities, simply take the initiative and
create what we want!”
After this week, I asked for his personal e-mail address and sent him an e-mail sharing my
views and dreams. He kindly e-mailed back simple encouragement such as “Keep thinking
and playing bigger; it’s much more fun that way. Love, Jack.” Then I got occupied with other
things in life and I stopped e-mailing Jack.
A year later, my dream gradually faded. I had this idea if I got back in touch with Jack. I e-
mailed him again and again but got no response. As I sat down at my computer to check my
e-mail for the fifth time in 15 minutes, an inspiration came like lightning: What was I doing?
Was I waiting for the prize of life? I knew I needed to do something about all this waiting. I
was going to write a book, which I would call “Waiting for Jack”!
It all sounded good, but then reality hit. Some nights I cried and wanted to give up. I wrote
and rewrote. Even though I could feel the fear, I did it anyway. Fortunately, three years later,
Waiting for Jack turns out a best-seller on Amazon!
We all have a “Jack” for whom we wait—whether it’s a person, a place or a thing. Now I

driving on mountain-climbing trips in Hunchun, northeast China’s Jilin province.
The woman, surnamed Zhao, was driving with two friends when they first saw a tiger cub

Passage 8
Notre-Dame was on fire, and I was desperately looking for a photo that I took. In it, my
husband, Jamie, is standing in front of the cathedral and smiling. We’re in Paris on our
honeymoon, and can barely believe the good fortune of it all—being married, being in such a
beautiful place, and being together. Ten years later, in 2018, I returned to Paris on my own. I
carried Jamie’s ashes (骨灰) with me. Jamie died on February 4, 2017.
Notre-Dame was on fire, and I desperately wanted it to survive. My 2018 trip to Paris
involved a lot of walking and reflecting, trying to make sense of how my life turned out. I
found a spot, sat in silence, and cried. I walked through the church, lit a candle in memory of
Jamie and other people I missed, and eventually headed outside. I looked out at the lawn—the
place where Jamie and I once sat as a newly-wed couple on our honeymoon, where I would
soon spread his ashes.
Notre-Dame was on fire, and I desperately wanted to talk to Jamie about it. Instead,I’m
reminded once more that we can’t control things—no matter how hard we try or how much
we believe. We can and should plan for the best, but we can never fully protect ourselves, our
loved ones, and our loved places from the worst. At some point, we have to let go.
There’s hope in sadness. There always is. As I helplessly watched Notre-Dame burn,I recalled
T.S. Elio’s “Little Gidding”: “What we call the beginning is often the end, and to make an
end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”
Notre-Dame will be rebuilt. And so will I. I’ll keep rebuilding my life, too.
1.When was the author on her honeymoon?
A.In 2000. B.In 2008.
C.In 2010. D.In 2018.
2.Why did the author visit Paris again in 2018?
A.She wanted to make her future clear.
B.She intended to meet a newly-wed couple there.
C.She wanted to take a photo in front of Notre-Dame.
第 13 页 共 54 页曲一线 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》B版
D.She liked the style of Notre-Dame Cathedral very much.
3.What is the great significance of Notre-Dame to the author?
A.It needs her help to be rebuilt.
B.It represents her religious faith.
C.It shows her favourite artworks.
D.It carries her memories of the past time.
4.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.She didn’t want to recall the lost time.
B.She was still pessimistic about her life.
C.She felt disappointed at the fire in Notre-Dame.
D.She was cheered up and wanted a new beginning.

Passage 9
On a break from his studies in the MIT Media Lab,Anirudh Sharma traveled home to
Mumbai, India. While there, he noticed that throughout the day his T-shirts were gradually
gathering something that looked like dirt. “I realized this was air pollution,or sooty(烟尘覆盖
的)particulate matter (PM),made of black particles released from exhaust(尾气)of vehicles,”
第 14 页 共 54 页曲一线 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》B版
Sharma says. “This is a major health issue.” Soot consists of tiny black particles, about 2.5
micrometers or smaller, made of carbon produced by incomplete burning of fossil fuels.
Back at MIT,Sharma set out to help solve this air-pollution issue. After years of research and
development, Sharma’s start-up Graviky Labs has developed technology that attaches to
exhaust systems of diesel generators(柴油发电机)to collect particulate matter. Scientists at
Graviky then turn it into ink, called Air-Ink, for artists around the world. So far, the start-up
has collected 1.6 billion micrograms of particulate matter. More than 200 gallons of Air-Ink
have been harvested for a growing community of more than 1,000 artists, from Bangalore to
Boston, Shanghai,and London.
Posted all over Graviky Labs’ Facebook page today are photos of art made from Air-Ink and
paints, including street wall paintings, body art and clothing prints. At first, there was still no
specific application for the ink. Then the start-up decided to find new ways to further spread
its mission. It chose to do so through art. “Art helps us raise awareness about where the ink
and paints come from. Air pollution knows no borders. Our ink sends a message that pollution
is the one of the resources in our world that’s the hardest to collect and use. But it can be
done,” Sharma says.

Passage 13
Dear Jim O’Connor,
My name is Annie Le and I am writing to you on behalf of the Native Health Community
Garden, a group of people working on starting a community garden in the Mesa
Neighborhood.
While searching for potential garden locations, we came across your house located at West
Southern Avenue. We are asking about the possibility of using your land as the site of our
garden.
In general, a community garden is a space where plants are grown and taken care of by a
group of people in the community. Community gardens improve the quality of life, offer
more chances to talk to each other and beautify neighborhoods while providing green food
and therefore reducing the household cost of food.
To ensure the smooth running of the project, elected volunteers would be in charge. You
would have access to all these volunteers and they would like to answer any questions you
may have.
I have included some general information about community gardens and what they can bring
to a community. We would love to speak with you in person or over the phone to discuss
what hosting a community garden on your land would involve. Issues may include discussing
an agreement, rental charges, garden rules, and water access. All the costs for the project will
be covered by us. We would also like to present to you our vision of this space.

Passage 14
I remember driving to Palm Springs from San Diego two Thanksgivings ago. None of us
pictured an icy blizzard (暴风雪) on our California vacation, but one hour into the drive, the
first snowflake fell. My eyes lit up. I’d missed snow. Seeing it land on a prickly cactus made
my tears well up. How I longed for cold Minnesota, my hometown.
As the altitude rose, the storm got fierce. It wasn’t long before we had no choice but to pull
over. As our car slid to a stop, I looked into the distance. A line of cars as long as the
Mississippi River were lined up.
Just then, a car came from behind, suddenly changing the direction to avoid hitting our car.
The driver, an old man, slammed on the brakes and his car drifted across the path. It didn’t
take us too long to realize his car was awfully near the edge of the mountain and slowly
creeping more and more towards the side of the cliff.
Suddenly, 10 people who were sitting in their cars leapt out. From the car window, I watched
an inspiring scene. Four people took the chains that protected their tires off their cars and put
them on the old man’s tires. One person shoveled the snow out from his tires and tried to
break the ice with his boot. Just as the old man’s car and all his belongings were about to be
lost off the edge of the cliff, people stepped up and let their kind hearts override the
snowstorm.
Though it was minus 30 degrees centigrade, my heart was as warm as ever. This act of
kindness just reminded me how thankful I am for people and moments like these.

Passage 15
Rene Compean was no stranger to the Angeles National Forest. He’d hiked the park
numerous times. But when hiking along a new path, the 45-year-old was lost.
As the day faded into darkness, his concern turned to fear. With only a little water in his
backpack and 10% battery power remaining on his cellphone, Compean was unprepared for
anything more than the two-hour trip he’d planned.
Compean climbed to a spot where he found one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to
die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed
his legs hanging over a rock face. All Compean could do then was wait. The temperature was
dropping fast. Dressed only in shorts, and a sweatshirt, the hiker was chilled to the bone. He
hugged himself into a tight ball. And after spotting two mountain lions, he spent the night on
high alert.

Sixty miles away, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a posting from the police,
showing an image of a man’s legs. The search and rescue teams had spent the previous night
unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo, hoping someone might
recognize the location.
“I’ve always loved looking for where photos are taken,” Kuo says. He frequently tries to
identify where movie scenes or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful. When he
saw the image, he automatically pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. “There’s an amazing
amount of information you can get from satellites,” he says. The first thing he noticed in
Compean’s photo was plenty of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo
realized something: “He’s got to be on the south side because there’re not any green valleys
on the north side.”
That finding led him to an area that looked like the territory in the image. The final step was
cross-referencing the original photo with 3-D images of the area. The locations matched!
After spending 27 hours in the wilderness, Compean was found.
Compean’s story probably would have ended differently if it had not been for the man with
strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail.
1.What caused Compean to get lost on the hike?
A.The thick forest.
B.The unfamiliar route.
C.The coming of nightfall.
D.Low battery power on the phone.
2.Kuo was able to offer help because of .

Passage 16
To the untrained eye, a ping-pong ball is just a ping-pong ball. To a Beverly Cleary fan,
it’s two motorcycle helmets for mice.
Ever since I read Cleary’s series about Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, I’ve never looked
at a ping-pong ball—or the world—the same way. Amazing to think that it’s been more than
forty years since I checked out The Mouse and the Motorcycle from my school library in
Northport, and yet that one particular image is as clear to me as ever.
And why shouldn’t it be? It’s perfect.
How I wanted a mouse of my own to ride a toy motorcycle around my house! Thanks to
Cleary’s genius, a talking mouse friend seemed not only possible but probable.
While much of children’s literature attempted to explain the world from the point of view of a
wise and gentle adult, Cleary created characters who saw the world as only children can. With
great interest, I read every book that bore Beverly Cleary’s name. She seemed like a friend
who understood me in ways I didn’t yet understand myself.
I’ve written eight children’s books and have always kept Beverly’s sense of wonder in mind. I
don’t remember at exactly what age I decided I wanted to write books, but I know that by
second or third grade, my teacher assigned a project that allowed us to focus on whatever we

wanted. My best friend picked dolphins; I chose children’s authors, with a large chunk of my
project being about who else? Beverly Cleary!
I told that story recently to a school group. One of the students said, “That’s fantastic! You
did your project on children’s authors and then you became one!”
“Yes,” I said. “And my best friend who did her project on dolphins—became a dolphin!”
“Really?” the students said in chorus.
And that perfectly sums up why I love writing for children: the belief that fantastic, magical
things can happen. Best friends can become dolphins; mice can ride toy motorcycles and
become our friends.
That’s what Beverly Cleary taught me. In the hands of a gifted storyteller, anything is
possible...and so very funny.
1.The Mouse and the Motorcycle impressed the author mainly because .
A.it recorded animals’ life
B.it revealed the wisdom of life
C.it encouraged children to raise pets
D.it described the world from children’s eyes
2.When learning the author’s friend became a dolphin, the students felt .
A.amazed B.doubtful
C.scared D.confused
3.What is the passage mainly about?
A.What the author created to attract children.
B.What the author did to turn the impossible into the possible.
C.How Beverly Cleary aroused children’s interest in reading.
D.How the author was inspired to be a writer by Beverly Cleary.
答案
[语篇解读] 作者因为喜欢作家Beverly Cleary的作品并受其影响,自己也成了一名儿童

子们的视角来描写这个世界,所以其作品让作者印象深刻。
2.A 推理判断题。根据倒数第三段所描述的学生们的反应(“Really?” the students said in
chorus.)

Passage 17
I first discovered the Little Free Library concept while being on a 2015 vacation in Santa
Barbara, California. I fell in love with the idea of free literature-sharing boxes posted at the
edges of parks and along sidewalks in neighbourhoods. And because our home was already
filled with mountainous piles of books, my husband wasn’t the least bit surprised when I
suggested starting a Little Free Library of our own. In our garden shed (棚), we filled the
shelves with books from our personal collection. Over the next two months, strangers
discovered our Little Free Library and began their regular visit.
My love of reading dates back to 1970, when I studied in a three-room primary schoolhouse
on a dirt road. One day, I accidentally came to the basement library and I was fascinated by
the picture books. Unfortunately, the books were later thrown away when the school
discovered the basement was full of mould (霉). Happily, weeks later, a truck arrived with a
trailer—which, with the help of our county’s public library, had been transformed into a
paradise (乐土) for those who enjoyed reading. Now I still remember the floor-to-ceiling
shelves and the carpeted benches in it. Every time I left, I wrote my name on several sign-out
cards, which were filled with names of children from neighbouring schools. We liked the
same books and, although we never met, I considered them friends.
At the beginning of the first COVID-19 lockdown, our Little Free Library began to include
children’s stories. I witnessed mothers lifting their children for a look into the library.
Walkers included our street in their route so they could check for new offerings. Some folks
routinely drove from several blocks away to visit. From time to time, visitors filled shelves

with literary fiction, romances, poetry and a range of non-fiction. I smiled when people met
me in the yard and commented that our Little Free Library was like a bird feeder.
We remain grateful that we have kept our Little Free Library open. It has become an
alternative means of creating a community of people with mutual regard for humanity and the
written word. We are together even when apart.
1.What inspired the author to start the Little Free Library?
A.Her large collection of books.
B.An experience during a vacation.
C.Her husband’s encouragement.
D.Strangers’ visit to her garden shed.
2.From the passage, we can learn that .
A.neighbouring schools donated books to the Little Free Library
B.the author’s enthusiasm for reading started from her childhood
C.children wrote their names on the sign-out cards to meet friends
D.the county’s public library became a perfect place for book lovers
3.People considered the Little Free Library a bird feeder because .
A.it provided food for thought
B.it attracted birds for shelter
C.visitors could feed birds here
D.people could exchange books here

The idea of getting a tattoo (文身) copy popped into Prue’s head when he noticed that
his 8-year-old son refused to take his shirt off in the swimming pool. Prue realized that his
son was starting to be aware of his birthmark, which covers a huge part of his chest.
Prue secretly went to a tattoo shop. The tattoo he wanted had to be identical to his son’s
birthmark, so they had to do it in nine sessions. “The first sitting was close to four hours. And
I didn’t really look to see what was going on,” said Prue. “So I thought at the end of the four

hours it was done. So I asked, ‘Is it almost done?’ And he said, ‘I’m almost done with the
outline.’”
It has been a bit of a process for Prue as well as a painful experience. Because of the size and
the position of the birthmark he was trying to copy, he had to suffer a lot of pain. Tony
Gibert, the tattoo artist, said that the area has very sensitive nerve endings which gave Prue so
much discomfort and undesirable sensations. Painful hours added up to nearly thirty hours in
total.
In a video where the son saw his dad’s tattoo, he can be heard saying, “That’s cool.” This
time, without any hesitation, he took off his shirt and jumped in the swimming pool.
Apparently, his dad’s action changed his perspectives, which made him feel confident again.
As expected, Prue’s son was so happy to see it but also a little confused, not expecting his dad
would do it.
Despite all the pain and long hours of waiting, Prue never felt discouraged. What mattered to
him was to make his son happy and help bring back his self-confidence.
1.Where was Prue’s tattoo?
A.On the face.
B.On the neck.
C.On the chest.
D.On the leg.
2.How long did Prue spend on the tattoo in all?

Passage 24 话题:人物报道 难度:中 词数:356
A former UPS driver and his wife have made history by donating $20 million to Morgan
State University—the largest gift Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have
ever received from a former student. The money, pledged by Calvin Tyler Jr and his wife
Tina, will fund scholarships that were established under the Tylers’ name in 2002.
Tyler grew up in a low-income family and was forced to drop out of Morgan State University
in 1963 because he could no longer afford to study. The following year, Tyler saw a job
advertisement in a Baltimore newspaper from United Parcel Service and got a job with the
company as a driver. He rose through the ranks during his 34-year career at the global
shipping company to become its senior vice president of US operations and a member of the
board of directors before retiring in 1998.
Tyler and his wife, also a Baltimore native, have lived all across the country but he said they
have never forgotten their humble beginnings.
Their latest pledge follows a $5 million commitment they made in 2016 for the fund, which to
date has supported 222 students with full or partial scholarships.
Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University who studies HBCUs, said the gift is
significant because public HBCUs like Morgan State University tend to have a lower alumni
giving rate compared to private ones.
“For a long time, they weren’t asking alumni to give,” she said. But that has changed in the
past couple of decades, she added, and the schools have “started asking alumni to give and
creating a culture of philanthropy (慈善) on campus.”

David K. Wilson, the president of Morgan State University, said the money will help students
for years to come. “Morgan is so proud to call this son and daughter of the great city of
Baltimore our own,” he said in a statement. “Through their historic donation, the doors of
higher education will most certainly be kept open for generations of aspiring leaders whose
financial shortfalls may have kept them from realizing their academic dreams.”
“We are forever indebted to the Tylers.”
1.Why is Tyler’s donation historic?
A.He was a former UPS driver.
B.The donation is large enough.
C.The donation will fund his scholarships.
D.He used to be a student at the university.
2.What is the driving force of Tyler’s donation?
A.His work experiences.
B.His career achievements.
C.His promise to the university.
D.His past embarrassing situations.
3.Which is true about HBCUs according to Gasman?
A.They are mainly public universities.
B.They are encouraging alumni to donate.
C.They rarely accept help from alumni.
D.They have changed little over the decades.
4.What can be inferred about Tyler from Wilson’s comments?
A.He’s helped many city leaders.
B.He’s grateful to his university.
C.He’s made great contributions.
D.He’s proud of his son and daughter.

Passage 25话题:艺术 难度:中 词数:336
In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual
musical instrument, the glass harp(竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different-sized drinking
glasses, each filled with water.
Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each
glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear.
They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations. Jamey Turner is 80
years old. Turner became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard
his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for about 50
years.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden
soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from
breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical
notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass
will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger
ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner always uses low-priced glasses because it sounds better than costly crystal(水晶玻璃)
and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in
stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing his finger over the top of them.
The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote
music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass
harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play

B.By placing the glasses on a wooden board.
C.By adding or reducing water in the glasses.
D.By holding different glasses with rubber bands.
3.What may be Jamey Turner’s real worry about the glass harp?
A.Little music is written for the instrument.
B.People are trying to play the instrument online.
C.Few people are playing the instrument these days.
D.The instrument cannot produce some beautiful sounds.
4.What is the best title for this text?

Parker Stewart, a 16-year-old from Sayre School, a college preparatory school in the
United States, knew last year that he wanted his independent study on the environment to
have a broad impact on the community. In order to “reduce the carbon footprint”, Parker
planned to produce enough solar energy to power the school’s science labs. Now his plan is
set to happen. The installation of 30 solar panels is scheduled for late January.
As he began his research on solar energy, he discovered a useful phone app. By entering an
address, he could find out how much sunlight the location receives each day. Based on how
much sunlight it receives, he found that his school building was the desired position.
At the suggestion of his science teacher, Debbie Wheeler, Parker first performed an energy
audit(审计)of the science lab to see how much energy a typical lab uses per day. Then, he
started his research, contacting a local installer of solar panels, Synergy Home, to do the job.
Parker lacked money for launching the project, so he convinced the Head of Sayre School to
fund him after explaining the benefits of solar power for the school and community. Since
Sayre School offered the initial seed money to provide supplies and the purchase of one
panel, the project has grown to include a total of 30 panels. They are expected to generate
enough energy to run all four of the science labs on campus.
“It feels like a dream to think that the idea which resulted from my AP Environmental
Science would have this kind of impact,” said Parker, expressing gratitude for Debbie’s help.
Debbie said the success of the project was due to Parker’s efforts and willingness to follow
through with the project from start to finish.

The green movement is catching on in many areas of the world. This is especially true in
the construction industry. Today’s buzzwords, which include global warming and zero
emissions, are causing people to look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Purchasing an
environmentally friendly home is a good investment for those who care about their own
health and the well-being of our planet. Based on this trend, entire districts, known as eco-
communities, are being designed with the concept of green in mind. One of these

communities is Dockside Green in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Its goal is to
become the world’s first zero-emission neighborhood.
Dockside Green is a mostly self-sufficient community along the harbor front of Victoria, the
capital city of British Columbia. The community is home to around 2,500 people and it
includes a variety of environmental features, some of which can’t be found anywhere else.
The planners and builders of Dockside Green have the environment in mind with every
choice they make. They ensure proper ventilation(通风)and guarantee residents clean air
indoors. Building materials, such as paint and wood, are natural and green.
Energy efficiency is attached great importance in eco-communities like Dockside Green. Not
only do energy-efficient appliances reduce the environmental impact of heating, cooking and
lighting, they also save residents money. Dockside Green claims that home owners use 55%
less energy than the average Canadian.
Eco-communities also take the future into account by recycling waste and reducing carbon
emissions. At Dockside Green, waste water is treated and reused on-site for flushing toilets,
and a gas plant changes waste wood into a renewable form of gas for hot water systems,
stoves and gas heaters. The community also reduces carbon emissions by using local
suppliers for all their transport and maintenance (维修) needs, and residents are encouraged to
join the community’s car share program.

Passage 29 话题:科学与技术 难度:中 词数:287
As spring arrives, farmers around the world are making decisions about what crops to
plant and how to manage them. In the U.S., farmers typically have big data to help make these
decisions. These data have a clear upside. They make farms more productive. In the U.S., the
past five years have seen a series of good harvests for both corn and soybeans. A big part is

generated by effectively using data to produce more food from the same amount of land,
seeds and fertilizers.
In the poorer parts of the world, however, the picture is much different. Many farmers are
guided only by their history with the land and their community’s traditions. Their skills and
knowledge are impressive, but they suffer from a poverty of data. They rely on technical
advisors for advice from governments and academic centers who often have very little
knowledge of the local area. For seeds and fertilizers and other materials used in the field,
they rely on companies that lack data on how their products will perform in the local
conditions.
About 10 years ago, East African officials and their development partners started to explore
why so few smallholder dairy farmers made profits from growing demand from urban
consumers. Surveys of farmers in the region suggested poor access to veterinary(兽医的) care
and breeding assistance. An effort to provide these services has helped farmers get more milk.
Data would matter little if farming was easy and the paths to productivity were obvious. But
in reality, agriculture is a complex mix of many factors, including climate, biology,
chemistry, physics, economics and culture—all of which vary from region to region. In this
situation, good data is necessary.
1.How has big data benefited American farmers?
A.By informing the farmers to plant crops earlier.
B.By helping make farms more productive.
C.By increasing the amount of land for farming.
D.By producing more seeds and fertilizers.
2.What do farmers in poor countries need to improve their farming?
A.Farming skills.
B.Technical guidance.
C.Big data.
D.Farming materials.
3.Why does the writer mention the case of East Africa?
A.To show that East Africa relies heavily on diary farming.
B.To illustrate cooperation between countries was a great success.
C.To serve as an example of how data helps farmers in poor areas.
第 51 页 共 54 页曲一线 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》B版

Passage 30 话题:科学研究 难度:中 词数:284
Could the device, smartphone or PC, which you’re using affect the moral decisions you
make when using it? To test it, researchers presented multiple dilemmas to a sample set of
1,010 people. The participants were assigned a device at random.
第 52 页 共 54 页曲一线 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》B版
One case of the questions participants were asked is the classic “trolley (有轨电车)problem”:
A runaway trolley is headed towards five people tied up on a set of train tracks. You can do
nothing, resulting in the deaths of five people, or push a man off a bridge, which will stop the
trolley. The practical response is to kill one man to save five lives, which 33.5 percent of
smartphone users chose, compared to 22.3 percent of PC users.
“What we found in our study is that when people used a smartphone to view classic moral
problems, they were more likely to make more unemotional, reasonable decisions when
presented with a highly emotional dilemma,” Dr Albert Barque-Duran, the lead author of the
study, told City University of London. “This could be due to the increased time pressure often
present with smartphones and also the increased psychological distance which can occur
when we use such devices compared to PCs.”
As for why the researchers started this study, Dr Barque-Duran noted, “Due to the fact that
our social lives, work and even shopping take place online, it is important to think about how
the contexts where we typically face moral decisions and are asked to engage in moral
behavior have changed, and the impact this could have on the hundreds of millions of people
who use such devices daily.” It’s clear that we need more research on how our devices affect
our moral decision making because we’re using screens at an ever-increasing rate.
1.Why did the author mention the trolley problem?
A.To introduce a difficult problem to readers.
B.To introduce the aim of carrying out the study.
C.To show an example of the questions in the study.
D.To show the difficulty in dealing with dilemmas.
2.How do the smartphone users of the study behave in dealing with emotional dilemmas?
A.Calmly. B.Cruelly.
C.Hesitantly. D.Enthusiastically.
3.Dr Barque-Duran believes that compared with PCs, smartphones .
A.help people bear more pressure
B.help people make decisions quicker
C.make people feel more mentally distant
D.make people stay happier to solve problems
