Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids.
And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at
four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and
healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food
restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of
soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though
some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as
soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a
year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say
they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening thatthey bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming
effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,”
she says, “and they feel successful.”
24. What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?
A. She used to be a health worker. B. She grew up in a low-income family.
C. She owns a fast food restaurant. D. She is an initiator of Urban Sprouts.
25. What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program?
A. The kids’ parents distrusted her. B. Students had little time for her classes.
C. Some kids disliked garden work. D. There was no space for school gardens.
26. Which of the following best describes the impact of the program?
A. Far-reaching. B. Predictable.
C. Short-lived. D. Unidentifiable.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Rescuing School Gardens B. Experiencing Country Life
C. Growing Vegetable Lovers D. Changing Local Landscape
D 25. C 26. A 27. B
And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban
Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools.(起初是这样的,艾比·哈拉米洛说,她和另一位
“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects
are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try
something new.(她说。
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so
interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the
garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional
control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”(她补充说,该计划的好处不仅仅是营养。
故选A。
And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban
Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science

C
A new UN report is set to reveal that up to 1 million species face extinction because of human actions.
We are causing a mass extinction event, and critically we cannot separate one environmental crisis from
another. Biodiversity loss cannot be separated from climate change, or from human population growth or
pollution or plastics in our oceans. These challenges are all interconnected. If we continue to consider these
problems separately, solutions will continue to emerge far too slowly.
The connections between these crises make solutions seem all too difficult. But in fact, a solution to one
problem will inevitably make a positive impact on many others too. More than 28, 000 people are dying
because of polluted air each year in Britain and air pollution is linked to psychotic (精神病的) experiences
and a reduction in educational achievement. It’s not rocket science: improving air quality in our cities by
cutting polluting vehicles will bring a vast range of benefits to human health, and help deal with climate
change too.
George Monbiot advocates taking land out of meat production and rewilding it. This will not only boost
biodiversity enormously but will also deal with global warming because those rewilded, rewetted lands will
capture significantly more carbon. If these lands are also opened up for us to enjoy, our physical and mental
health will flourish. Thus we repair the ecology of destruction.
It can be difficult to know what we can do as individuals—but at least we all possess an increasingly
understanding of how farming, consumption and energy-use impacts upon the planet. If everyone makes a
small change, that will make a difference to our planet. We're not struggling to find ideas to solve problems either globally or locally. It's action we're lacking,
in government and beyond, as individuals and together as a species. If we act now we may be surprised at
how these seemingly vast problems decrease quicker than we imagine.
28.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The age of mass extinction has arrived.
B.Environmental crises are interrelated.
C.Humans are to blame for mass extinction.
D.Environmental crises should be solved separately.
29.Why are rewilded lands beneficial to controlling global warming?
A.They attract tourists.
B.They provide habitat for birds.
C.They take in carbon.
D.They boost biodiversity.
30.What does the author call on people to do?
A.Take action now.
B.Find a better idea.
C.Cooperate with others.
D.Turn to the government.
31.Where does this text probably come from?
A.A news report.
B.A biology textbook.
C.A climate handbook.
D.A scientific journal.
【答案】28.B 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据第一段中“These challenges are all interconnected. If we continue to consider these
problems separately, solutions will continue to emerge far too slowly.(这些挑战都是相互关联的。
根据文章第三段“This will not only boost biodiversity enormously but will also deal withglobal warming because those rewilded, rewetted lands will capture significantly more carbon.(这不仅将极大地促
根据最后一段“It’s action we’re lacking, in government and beyond, as individuals and
故选A。
根据文章第一段“A new UN report is set to reveal that up to 1 million species face extinction
because of human actions… If we continue to consider these problems separately, solutions will continue to emerge

Adult musk ducks raised in captivity(圈养)can copy the sounds they heard as hatchlings, such as a
door slamming,a man coughing and even what was probably a former caretaker's catchphrase (口头
You bloody fool! "
The large, grey Australian waterbirds usually learn to make high-pitched whistles from their older flock
mates. But individuals raised in captivity away from other musk dusks have been heard copying the sounds
around them associated with human life.
The findings provide evidence that musk dusks now join parrots, seals, bats, elephants and humans as
vocal ( 声 音 的 ) language learners, which means they acquire "words" based on what they hear as
infants, says Carel Ten Cate at Leiden University in the Netherlands. "Vocal learning is a rare and special
trait,so that makes this duck particularly special," he says.Ten Cate studies vocal learning in birds and was
recently fascinated to come across a story about a talking duck in Australia. So he tracked down the now-
retired Australian scientist Peter J.Fullagar, who first noticed the phenomenon more than 30 years ago.
Fullagar shared his conserved audio clips(片段)of 4-year-old Ripper,a male musk duck hand-raised
on a nature reserve without other musk ducks. In the clips,Ripper walks around speaking when acting
aggressively and copying a slamming door sound when trying to attract females.
Fullagar also shared an audio clip of a second male that was raised on the same reserve with his motherin 2000,along with Pacific black ducks that make sounds "like common park ducks," Ten Cate says.Female
musk ducks don't perform vocal displays, and the young, unnamed duck grew up to copy the black ducks
around him.
After Ten Cate ensured the recordings,he used software to confirm that the birds were repeating noises
from their environment,in some cases sounds that they had only heard in the first weeks of life.In the
recordings, the ducks made these sounds dozens of times in a matter of minutes,at about 4-second intervals
32.What is special about adult musk ducks raised in captivity? ______
A. They can make high-pitched whistles.
B. They join elephants in large forests.
C. They repeat what they hear around.
D. They create languages of their own.
33.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us? ______
A. Studies on vocal learning. B. Fullagar's audio clips.
C. A story about a talking duck. D. Fullagar's living condition.
34.What was Ten Cate's discovery? ______
A. Female musk ducks can make vocal sounds.
B. Musk ducks raised with other ducks make vocal sounds.
C. Musk ducks repeat vocal sounds without pause.
D. Musk ducks repeat what they hear as infants.
35.What is the best title for the text? ______
A. Australian Ducks Talk Like Humans
B. Animals Are Smarter Than We Expect
C. What Vocal Language Can Animals Learn
D. People Learn a Lot from Adult Musk Ducks
C 33. B 34. D 35. A
But individuals raised in captivity away from other musk dusks have been
heard copying the sounds around them associated with human life.(但是,在远离其他麝香黄昏的环境中被圈
根据第四段Fullagar shared his conserved audio clips(片段)of 4-year-old Ripper,a male
musk duck hand-raised on a nature reserve without other musk ducks. In the clips,Ripper walks around speaking
when acting aggressively and copying a slamming door sound when trying to attract females.(Fullagar分享了他
根据最后一段中 the birds were repeating noises from their environment,in some cases
sounds that they had only heard in the first weeks of life.(这些鸟重复着它们所处环境发出的声音,在某些情
根据全文和第一段Adult musk ducks raised in captivity(圈养)can copy the sounds they
heard as hatchlings, such as a door slamming,a man coughing and even what was probably a former caretaker's
catchphrase (口头禅),"You bloody fool!
故选A

G 37. B 38. C 39. F 40. E
A favorite musical tune can fuel positive memories, boost your mood, and create a
G.Used in specific ways, music is also a valuable tool for supporting your health."
Research in the November 2019 Psychology of Sport and Exercise found
that upbeat music can make a workout seem less challenging and more enjoyable(2019年11月的运动和锻炼心
B.Music has long served as a sleep aid."
But waking up to a pleasant tone
instead of a sharp alarm can reduce morning sleepiness and improve efficiency"讲到要伴随愉快的音调的音乐起
C.Turn up some music with a fast beat."
The right choice of music also appears to be necessary." F.People respond best to familiar music, according to Professor Diaz-

Many studies have shown that students who listen to slow and peaceful sounds
have less anxiety."
E.Try listening to such sounds the next
time you face a tough task."

Dear teachers and fellow students;
It’s my great honour to stand here and present a speech about the worrying situation of nearsightedness among
Chinese students. Nowadays in China, huge numbers of students are near-sighted, college students included. Worse
still, the tendency is still on the rise. So, it is high time we took immediate and proper measures right now. Here, I do appeal to you all to stick to the practice of eye exercises at least twice a day. Besides, don’t read in
an environment where it is too dim or too bright. As you know, too much screen time contributes a lot to poor
eyesight, so you’d better stay away from digital devices as well. Last of all, please remember to give your eyes a
short rest between classes by looking afar outside.
Take good care of the window of your heart, and you’re bound to enjoy a bright future.
That’s all! Thanks for all your attention!
During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of
the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three
hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered
money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father
bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had
a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子)
from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top,
and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to
his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished
the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a
$20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as
quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and
Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch. I told her I hadn’t had lunch because I’d
been waiting here for help for nearly three hours. The girl said they didn’t have lunch either. She suggested to her
parents that we have lunch together. Their truck happened to have some food and some things for the picnic. So we
ate together in a vacant lot by the side of the road. During that time, I told about what had happened to me and how
I felt. They shared interesting stories about their lives in Mexico and on fruit farms. After lunch, the girl’s mother
put a paper bag of fruit in my jeep. I showed my gratitude again and we said goodbye to each other.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. There are some delicate fruits in the paper bag. I was
surprised to find the money I had quietly left them. At the same time, there was a note written by a girl, which read
“We are very happy to be able to help you. We have encountered many difficulties and been disappointed. But we
met a lot of helpful people, which made us feel very warm. To help others with one’s own ability is also a kind of
lifting a finger. The beauty of life comes from these lifting a finger. I hope you have a good life and a happy mood.”
This made me very moved, and I would try my best to help more people in the future to make our world more
beautiful and warmer.
