◆ Select a visual text that you believe presents an argument to its viewers.
◆ Briefly study the visual text you’ve selected and underline the central argument
its designers are trying to make.
◆ Analyze the design elements used and the organization of the text in order to
determine some of the decisions the designer or artist has made.
◆ Use the process of “observation/inference/evaluation” to check your essay and
determine the tools the designer or artist is using to persuade you.

wasn’t particularly strong or functional.
He waited until he was 18 to try again.Using LEGO pieces ,David built a
prosthetic arm that he called the MK1.This multipurpose prosthetic arm even had a
way to grasp items, but David wanted to keep improving his arm and he made a few
more versions. His fourth and current version is a colorful red and yellow fully
functional robotic arm that has a bendable elbow joint and flexible grabber built

Few businesses can run without computers , giving keyboard shortcuts anincredible importance.Schools view typing courses as necessary. But what are we
giving up as handwriting loses its significance?
Brain power, according to science.Researchers from Princeton University and the
University of California conducted a series of studies to demonstrate the differences
between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed them.Study
participants took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested 30
minutes after the lecture, and again a week later.
The results showed both types of notetakers did well on the first test. The
longhand notetakers had a stronger grasp of the overall concept.Students with the
handwritten notes were also able to better remember and understand the concept of the
lecture a week later, and were more open to understanding new ideas.
According to Pam Mueller, lead author of the study,“Our findings suggest
even when laptops are used as intended , they may still be harming academic
performance.” Part of the reason is that it was faster to take notes on the laptop, using
exactly the same words meant they weren’t truly engaged in the content. But notetakers
using pen and paper tended to digest the material better and could rephrase it in their
own words.
Although typing notes using exactly the same words can help in recalling facts in
the short term , it takes the focus away from the main points of the
lesson.“Ironically, the feature that makes their laptop notetaking so attractive—the
ability to take notes more quickly—was what weakened learning,” educational
psychologist Dr.Kenneth Kiewra told The Wall Street Journal.
Computers aren’t going away soon , but that doesn’t mean paper notebooks
become outdated. In fact,it is best to start using them at an early age.University of
Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five-year-olds—some who practiced
the printing letters, and some who just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the
letters had more enhanced and adult-like brain activity.
8.In the study, what were the participants asked to do?
A.Compare typing and handwriting.
B.Take notes by typing or handwriting and take tests.
C.Take two tests right after taking notes on the lecture.
D.Take notes using exactly the same words on the lecture.
University and...were tested 30 minutes after the lecture,and again a week later.”
9.What does the underlined word “longhand” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Fast. B.Flexible.
C.Typing. D.Handwriting.
根据画线单词下一句“Students with the handwritten
notes were also able to...and were more open to understanding new ideas.”
10.What contributes to better learning in note-taking?
A.Using the exact words.
B.Introducing modern tools.
C.Writing as quickly as possible.
D.Rephrasing the learning material.
根据文章第四段的“But notetakers using pen and
paper...in their own words.”
11.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Typing matters in a way
B.A pen is better than a keyboard
C.Handwriting builds your brain power
D.Handwriting or typing is a question
根据文章第一段的“But what are we giving up ashandwriting loses its significance?”
Computers aren’t going away soon...had more enhanced and
adult-like brain activity.”
“Handwriting builds your brain power”

My eighteen-year-old daughter Julia called twenty minutes after she left,
saying she had an accident.I grabbed my shoes and was in the car in less than a
minute. When I finally saw her ,I hugged her tightly. Then I looked at the other
driver.Learning that he fell asleep behind the wheel at about seventy miles an hour
when the speed limit was forty-five,I could have choked him.
“It could have been worse,” I reminded myself as she cried all the way to the
doctor’s office.Luckily , four days after the accident , Julia felt better. At her
appointment , her doctor cleared her to resume normal activities , including
driving. But I could tell by her look that she had no intention of getting behind the

just have to push through the fear and do it,and it will get easier each time you do.” I
ignored the fear in her eyes and the way my heart sped up when I thought about Julia

Students at Eindhoven University of Technology didn’t just want to build a car that
wouldn’t pollute the air;they wanted to create one that could actually clean it up.
The college team has just exhibited a battery-powered car that absorbs CO .Their
2
car, called the Zem,is equipped with a special filter (过滤器) that cleans up the CO
2
produced by other cars on the road.
The Zem was born out of a challenge to build a completely carbon -neutral
vehicle. Its body panels (金属板) were 3D printed to reduce waste and minimize the
production of CO .Recycled plastics were also used throughout the outside and
2
inside.The car’s power train,which consists of small battery packs and a 22-kWh
motor, also makes use of regenerative braking to increase efficiency.
The real difference maker, though,is the vehicle’s special CO filter. The Zem
2
purifies (净化) the air through the special filter while driving, capturing the CO and
2
storing it.It is able to absorb 2 kg of CO for 20,000 miles a year, meaning ten cars
2
could store as much carbon dioxide as an average tree—a significant amount when
considering the world’s billion cars are currently one of its leading sources of
emissions.
Even if the technology isn’t adopted, the team hope that their car can inspire
automakers to start making cleaner vehicles.“We want to encourage the industry by
showing what is already possible,” the leader of the team said.“If 35 students can
design, develop and build an almost carbon-neutral car in a year, then there are
also opportunities and possibilities for the industry.”
The Zem is the second zero-emission vehicle we’ve seen come out of the
Eindhoven University of Technology.Last year, another team of students created the
Stella Vita,a solar-powered vehicle that could travel up to 450 miles a day.We can’twait to see what the school’s students come up with next.
