I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003.I’d never
set foot in a comedy club before.I’ve always been a performer—I’ve worked as a
singer, actor and musician—but all that came to an end after a disaster in New
York. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy.I realised people needed to
laugh,to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do
it.I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the
courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying.I had no idea what the
audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough
to break through as a woman ,even harder as someone old enough to be their
grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They
were clearly surprised to see me.I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first
joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properlylaughing.I was addicted.
Now my sets differ.I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen
people,or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100.Even
today,I’m nervous before I step out.My first line is,“Hello,everybody.I’m 88
and three-quarters years old.I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way
through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me,saying what an inspiration
I am.They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age.I’m pleased I
can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy.I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay
alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100.My goal is to still be up there
making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored.I’d only be playing
golf otherwise.
4.What made the writer take up comedy?
A.She wanted to overcome her fears.
B.She wanted to brighten others’ lives.
C.She was unwilling to quit performing.
D.She wanted to work out a routine.
5.Why does the writer mention young men with beards in Paragraph 3?
A.To show the challenge she was facing.
B.To explain her attraction to the job.
C.To illustrate her special advantage.
D.To describe her new friends in comedy.
6.How has the writer made progress since her first performance?
A.She now performs before larger audiences.
B.She no longer feels nervous before performances.
C.She remains on the stage for a longer time.
D.She has learned to make a joke of her age.
7.Which of the following statements would the writer agree with?
A.Age is just a number.B.Advancing years bring greater wisdom.
C.Old age means a chance to sit back.
D.Being elderly means you have to slow down.

When robots and humans interact in a shared environment,it is important for
them to move in ways that prevent conflicts or accidents. To reduce the risk ,
roboticists have developed numerous techniques that monitor an environment ,
predict the future actions of humans, identify safe trajectories (轨迹) for a robot and
control its movements accordingly.
Predicting human behavior and movements , however , can be incredibly
challenging.Determining the future movements of a robot,on the other hand, could
be far easier. If human users could anticipate the movements of robots and the effects
these will have on the surrounding environment, they should then be able to easily
adapt their actions in order to avoid accidents.
With this in mind, researchers at Kyushu University in Japan recently created a
near-future perception system named Previewed Reality that allows human users to
forecast future changes in their environment, which could then inform their decisions
and guide their actions. This system compiles a data -set containing information
about the position of objects, humans and robots within the same environment,to
then produce simulations ( 模 拟 ) of events that could take place in the near
future. These simulations are presented to human users via Virtual Reality (VR) or
Augmented Reality (AR) headsets.
To collect information about the position of different objects ,robots, and
humans in a shared environment, the researchers used a number of strategically
placed sensors, including optical trackers that monitored the movements of objects
or robots, and a RGB-D camera which mainly tracked human actions. The data
gathered by the sensors was then fed to a motion planner and a dynamics
simulator.Combining these two system components allowed the researchers to
forecast changes in a given environment and synthesize (合成) images of events thatare likely to occur in the near future, from the viewpoint of a specific human.Human
users could then view these synthesized images simply through a VR headset or an
AR display.
“This system provides human-friendly communication between a human and a
robotic system,” the researchers explained. In their next studies, they plan to
expand and simplify the perception system, for instance by creating a lighter and
more affordable version that can be accessed on smart phones or other portable
devices.
8.Why did the researchers develop the system?
A.To predict future changes in human behavior.
B.To record developments in the field of robotics.
C.To enhance safety of human-robot interactions.
D.To make good use of virtual reality technology.
9.What is special about Previewed Reality?
A.It simulates near-future events via VR headsets.
B.It enables human users to perceive future events.
C.It guides robots to track humans’ movements easily.
D.It helps determine the location information of objects.
10.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Functions of various sensors.
B.New ways to synthesize images.
C.The structure of Previewed Reality.
D.The working process of Previewed Reality.
11.What might the researchers do in the future?
A.Promote the new version through advertising.
B.Test this perception system with smart phones.
C.Apply some new techniques to robotic systems.
D.Make the system accessible on portable devices.

Tod Morgan was born blind,mentally challenged,and autistic.So he couldn’t
see;he could not learn like other children, and he didn’t interact with people verymuch. He did not seem to have much of a chance. Then, when he
was two years old,he began to play little songs on his tiny toy piano. He could play
perfectly some of the children’s tunes he had heard.
Today,Tod works as a professional pianist.He plays jazz,Broadway songs,
and classical pieces. After hearing a tune,he can imitate it almost perfectly the first
time he plays it.Tod doesn’t only imitate;he is creative too.He can change a classical
piece to a jazz piece,a jazz piece to a polka,and a polka to a waltz.In addition to
the piano,Tod can play 13 other instruments and also can sing.Tod’s list of musical
heroes includes Louis Daniel Armstrong,Mozart, and Beethoven. How can this
be?How can such a severely challenged person be so musically talented?
Tod has what is called “savant syndrome”—a condition in which a mentally
challenged person has a highly developed talent of a specific kind.Savant syndrome is
a mystery to medical researchers. One person who is studying savant syndrome is
Dr.David Brighton. He says that he has never seen a musical savant like Tod.Most
musical savants are limited to simply repeating tunes they hear.Dr.Brighton points out
that Tod’s ability to come up with his own tunes is a giant step beyond memorization.
As for Tod,after studying jazz piano at the Rivers School in Massachusetts,he
attended and graduated from the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston.Tod is
encouraged by his parents as he performs all over the world appearing on TV and
radio shows.
12.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Tod was not likely to be completely cured.
B.Tod’s chances of success in life were small.
C.Tod’s ability to learn music was very limited.
D.Tod would have few opportunities to meet others.
13.A person with savant syndrome is .
A.mentally disabled but specially gifted
B.socially inactive but musically talented
C.physically disabled but highly intelligent
D.psychologically challenged but physically gifted14.What distinguishes Tod from most musical savants?
A.His memory. B.His creativity.
C.His sociability. D.His learning speed.
15.What can be concluded from the text?
A.Tod is a typical case of a serious disease.
B.Family support is vital to Tod’s recovery.
C.Music connects Tod to the world around him.
D.Music education is a cure to the mentally disabled.

Though there are filters which can change digital photographs to make them
similar to a painting, obvious differences still exist.
A brand-new painting AI has been made public recently.Much like the pupils of
the old masters, the new AI studies the works of great painters like Vermeer and Van
Gogh and learns to reproduce their works.
The AI,named “PaintBot”,is the creation of a team of researchers from the
University of Maryland, the Bytedance AI Lab and Adobe Research.
PaintBot can not only reproduce the works of different artists but create new
works based on photographs in the chosen painter’s characteristic style.
To train the AI to imitate a given artist’s technique ,the researchers would
present it with between 3 and 10 reference paintings. With each reference painting it
studies, the AI gradually learns to recognize the various characteristics of the given
artist’s technique,including the stroke colour,position and size—along with the
order in which each brushstroke should be made.
PaintBot uses a technique known as reinforcement learning.During the learning
process, the AI would practice reproducing reference paintings, which it would then
compare with the original work to see how similar the two were and if it was
improving its imitation of the artist’s style. It takes around six hours for the AI to learn
to imitate a given painter.
Once the AI has mastered a particular artist’s technique, the researchers could
present it with a new image to reproduce in the same style. The AI then uses what ithas learnt to produce a new painting, putting down each brushstroke one at a time.
After being trained in a given style,PaintBot takes only around five minutes to
produce each of its digital masterpieces.
The way that PaintBot’s compositions are built up from thousands of individual
brushstrokes makes the AI’s works more realistic than those online filters.
16.What do we know about filters used to change digital photos?
A.They are well received. B.They are not good enough.
C.They are really fantastic. D.They are disliked by people.
17.How does PaintBot create works?
A.It mixes techniques of different artists.
B.It learns from the artist on the spot.
C.It just imitates the color of the given paintings.
D.It follows the given style of the paintings.
18.Which of the following words can the author use to describe PaintBot’s paintings?
A.Lifelike. B.Valuable.
C.Advanced. D.Original.
19.What is a suitable title for the passage?
A.The Most Intelligent AI Painter PaintBot
B.A Brand-new Painting Reproduced By AI
C.PaintBot Creates More Realistic Paintings
D.How PaintBot Imitates Artists’ Techniques
