(2023秋·广东广州·高三执信中学校考开学考试)Ida Nelson was relaxing herself in her
sister’s sauna (桑拿室) when she heard the sound of a small airplane circling the nearby airport.
It was 11: 30 at night in a remote village with a population of 70, and, as she told the
newspaper reporter, “Any time a plane flies over that late, you know something is wrong.” Nelson
and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem — the airports
runway lights were out. Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her jeep, and floored it to the
airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights manually.
“Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up,” Nelson told
the reporter. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned of the plane’s urgent mission —
it was a helicopter, there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest hospital, 280 miles
away in another city.
Nelson had a plan. Driving her jeep to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights on the
road for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed, so a
neighbor called nearly every home in the village — 32 of them.
Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas.
Following directions from the helicopter pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway. The
helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient
was loaded onto the aircraft, and the plane immediately took off again. Her illness was never
publicly known, but she has since been recovered.
Without them, the girl might not have made it. However, for Nelson, it was only a small
deed.
24.What problem did the helicopter encounter?
A.Its lights went out by accident.
B.It made noise as it ran out of fuel.
C.It didn’t arrive at the scheduled time.
D.It could not spot the runway at night.
25.What does the underlined word “urgent” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.instant B.normal C.final D.impossible
26.What can we conclude from the passage?
A.The girl has been in the hospital since her illness was reported.
B.The creative thought and the sense of duty of Nelson led to the final landing.
C.The villagers gathered so quickly because they were awake and ready to help.
D.The helicopter was to transport the girl from the local hospital to another one.
27.What does this passage want to tell the readers?A.No way is impossible to courage.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.A small act of kindness makes a big difference.
D.Where there is a wisdom, there is effectiveness.

(2023秋·广西·高三南宁二中校联考开学考试)Every 40 days a language dies. This
“catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to linguists. If nothing is
done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7,000 languages currently spoken will be
extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害), with
the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South
Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the
coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.
“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Rachel, director of the Strathy language
unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as
communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Rachel.
“It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the
world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring
12, 189 km2, has 110 languages, the highest density of languages on the planet. It is also one of the
countries most at risk of sea level rise. “Marty small language communities are on islands and
coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says. Others live on lands where
rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages
(IDIL) in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only
important for them, but for all humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president,
urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.
28.Which statement best describes the facts of languages?
A.Climate change is the only challenge for minority languages.
B.Half of all the languages spoken will be extinct in the future.
C.Climate crisis is a huge threat to many indigenous languages.
D.Poor education is the direct cause of disappearing languages.
29.Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To explain the main reason for language density.
B.To show the common features of endangered languages.
C.To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.
D.To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.
30.What is the aim of the IDIL?A.Support migrants to access local education.
B.Discourage people from massive migration.
C.Protect the environment to reduce the temperature.
D.Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave
B.Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation
C.Lost for Words: Climate Crisis Brings Threat of Catastrophe
D.Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis

(2023 秋·江苏镇江·高三统考开学考试)The backfire effect is a very strong,
psychological aspect in all of our minds. Due to this effect, whenever you are faced with
information and facts that contradict something you believe, instead of changing your view or
forming a new opinion, your original beliefs will often be strengthened. Yon will believe in your
previously formed opinion even more vigorously (坚定地), despite seeing hard proof.
For example, remember that classmate you formed an opinion about too fast? And even
though everything they did suggested otherwise, you didn’t want to believe you were wrong about
them, so you convinced yourself that you weren’t wrong.
You found reasons, dwelt on minor things, and ignored the facts that contradicted your
opinion. With all of this struggle, you believed that your opinion didn’t have to change. The huge
amount of thought you gave it only strengthened your original opinion about your classmate.
The backfire effect is very powerful and a part of the mechanism of our minds as humans. We
can’t get rid of it, but we can make ourselves more aware of it. Being aware that you may be
straining your logic only to preserve your beliefs will cause you to keep your mind more open,
allowing you to definitely change and learn much faster.
Arguments can be approached in better ways when you are aware of the backfire effect.
Apart from being aware of it, you can keep your own mind open. You shouldn’t state facts that
counter (反驳) the opposing person’s opinion. Instead, you should ask them questions that will
make them question what they believe.
The Internet revolution has provided the ability to argue with people across the globe, even if
you’ve never met them. Heated arguments you might have witnessed (or participated in) on the
Internet between two people going back and forth about a very emotional issue will usually end in
very raised tempers and no conclusions. This is because each side is really just strengthening the
other side’s original opinion.
In my opinion, it is critically important to be aware of the backfire effect, because of how
much it helps us grow. We can change and learn much faster if we allow our ideas of the world to
be flexible, and not be so certain that our beliefs are superior.
32.What will people most probably do under the influence of the backfire effect?A.Accept contradictory information. B.Come up with new ideas.
C.Stick to previous beliefs. D.Notice solid evidence.
33.How can people deal with arguments better when noticing the backfire effect?
A.By inspiring others to doubt their own belief.
B.By bravely providing the fact opposed by others.
C.By removing the influence of the backfire effect.
D.By becoming aware of the logic of the arguments.
34.Why do heated arguments on the Internet tend to end in vain?
A.They are not discussed by people face to face.
B.They are strengthening the opponents’ initial opinion.
C.They are too debatable for people to draw conclusions.
D.They are only between two people.
35.What does the author suggest readers do with the backfire effect?
A.Ask for help from other people if necessary.
B.Improve the flexibility of their schedule.
C.Learn from other people as quickly as possible.
D.Avoid absolutely believing their views are better than others.

important to academic and professional success. 36 However, you may not be sure how to
take notes. To do so, use note-taking techniques for written texts or presentations such as lectures,

(2023 秋·江苏镇江·高三统考开学考试)Different sports filled my days in my youth. I
dreamed or a big win some day, with a big trophy (奖杯). I was skillful and fast, or so I thought.
However, I soon learned my skills seemed quite weak because the bigger, stronger boys seemed to
occupy every corner of the playground. Once I was in the 100-yard hurdles, the only recognition I
received for my performance was two bloody knees.
In college, I took a swim competition, dreaming of the glory! It turned out I achieved
nothing. As an older adult, I still maintained an active lifestyle. In 2010 I signed up for a stair-
climbing challenge to raise money for fighting against lung cancer. My father had died of the same
disease, so this was a meaningful cause for me. Then, in 2019,the organization offered an even
more challenging climb option: the vertical (垂直的) mile. So I would have three hours to climb
up and down twenty-eight floors fifteen times, plus three more.
I trained hard. When the challenge started. I felt confident. But soon my legs started feeling
heavy. What was worse, I began experiencing leg cramps ( 抽 筋 ). My progress slowed
dramatically and I quickly fell behind. When came down after finishing lap 14, it was past the
time limit, so my big win had escaped once again.
Soon after the climb, I struggled to experience the sense of self-satisfaction. And I had, after
all, set a goal for myself to prove what I was made of, what I had inside me. And what I had inside
me was, “Nice try, but you didn’t make it.” So, a year later, at age 62 and after numerous
workouts, I was back. Like last year, I was well ahead after an hour and I again started feeling
some discomfort in my legs. I heard myself cry out loud, “Oh, no not again!” I finally stopped and
sat down on the stairs, feeling quite depressed and wondering if my dream was over. A few
climbers stopped to offer help. I was touched, but embarrassed to accept. Except for one climber.
An angel climber, really.
Jessica, who I happened to know, was a salesman’s friend when I bought new running shoes
at his store. And without that connection, she might have climbed past me as I sat on those steps,
my legs shaking. But all those things did happen, and Jessica stopped to help.
