Kristina Smithe was running the California International Marathon in 2019, grabbing cups of water to stay
hydrated (补充水分), when she started to think about how much waste such events would produce. On the flight
home, she did the math: 9,000 runners, 17 aid stations and something like 150, 000 cups used once and thrown
away.
“I was just shocked that, even in California, it isn’t sustainable,” Smithe said. That started her idea for
something more lasting — a lightweight, flexible silicone ( 硅胶) cup that could be used again and again. After
working out a design, Smithe ordered her first samples and tested them at a race in 2021.
Now her business, Hiccup Earth, has 70, 000 cups that Smithe rents out to interested races to replace the
typical white paper cups that can build up at busy water stops. She rents out the cups by the thousand, driving them
to events in massive bags and leaving bins with the company logo for collection after use. Then the used cups are
picked up and washed in a special dishwasher.
At the PNC Women Run the Cities race in Minneapolis and Minnesota, in early May, Smithe helped satisfy
the thirst of thousands of runners, dropping off 17-gallon bags full of her flexible blue cups.
After that race, Smithe, 35, estimated she’s taken her cups to 137 races and spared 902,000 disposable (一次
性的) cups from the landfill. One trade-off is that renting her cups costs race directors more than other options.
Disposable cups might run just a few cents each, while 10,000 Hiccup cups would rent for about 15 cents each.
That price drops if more cups are needed.
Gleeson, of Project Drawdown, sees the reusable cups as just one of many ways that innovators are looking
to cut down on waste. “While no one solution can fully tackle the problem,” Gleeson said, “I think in general, high
adoption of these kinds of solutions might bring costs down and maximize environmental benefits that we expect to
get.”
24.What inspired Smithe to start her business?
A.The high cost of disposable cups.
B.Environmental impact of waste.
C.A suggestion from race organizers.
D.Her volunteering at an aid station.
25.What do we know about Hiccup cups?
A.They are cleaned in common dishwashers.
B.They are made of recycled flexible plastic.
C.They are costlier to rent than other cups. D.They are difficult for organizers to recycle.
26.What is Gleeson’s attitude towards reusable cups?
A.Positive.
B.Critical.
C.Negative.
D.Subjective.
27.What does the author mainly convey in the text?
A.Actions speak louder than words.
B.It’s the first step that is troublesome.
C.Drops of water wear away a stone.
D.Necessity is the mother of invention.

Your creative hobbies could do good to your brain, according to a new study.
The study looked at brain activity data from 1,240 participants across 13 countries. Researchers used the data
to create brain clocks — machine learning models that compare actual and neurological (神经系统的) age and can
find cognitive (认知的) differences in patients. Then, they applied those models to 232 people who make art,
dance, play video games and make music, all with different levels of creative experience. Researchers found that
those who practiced their skill regularly had signs of slower brain aging. The strongest link was found in tango
dancers, whose brains were on average seven years younger than their biological age.
Even those who only engaged in short-term training in a creative activity saw benefits, the research found.
“One of our key takeaways is that you do not need to be an expert to benefit from creativity. Indeed, we found that
learners gained from brief video game training sessions,” says Carlos Coronel, the paper’s first author.
Those video game training sessions involved teaching 24 right-handed participants how to play “StarCraft
II”, a strategy video game involving creative problem-solving. The training lasted 30 hours over three to four
weeks. Another group, used as a control, was trained in “Hearthstone”, a digital collectible card game that has more
concrete rules and requires less strategic. Those who spent time playing “StarCraft II”each week showed slower
brain aging and did better on brain tests after their training period than controls. The more skilled the participants
were in their chosen art forms, the lower their brain age, the researchers write.
The findings could have important public health implications, says Agustín Ibáñez, a scientist at Adolfo
Ibáñez University in Chile. Perhaps creativity, like exercise, could be recommended to patients to protect brain
health. “This is not relevant only for neuroscience, but it is a cultural and policy opportunity,” Ibáñez notes. “Our
societies need to imagine healthy aging through both medical and non-medical domains, such as creativity, arts and
play.”
28.Why did researchers make brain clocks?
A.To develop new brain video games.
B.To research various art benefits.
C.To measure participants’ activities.
D.To identify brain aging differences.
29.What does the underlined word “takeaways” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Conclusions.
B.Assumptions.
C.Predictions.
D.Experiments.
30.What does the study imply about “StarCraft II”?
A.It requires more brain power.
B.It reduces brain health.
C.It simplifies brain work.
D.It increases brain strategizing.
31.What is the study’s public health value according to Ibáñez?
A.Advancing medical reform.
B.Training local medical staff.
C.Bettering social interactions.
D.Providing reference for policies.

In a world that is coping with a growing population, there is a mounting need to develop and manage
systems, products, and processes that boost productivity but with minimal environmental impact. To design a
product or process well, you first need to deeply understand how a substance behaves. This is exactly where
chemical engineers play a key role.
“Chemical Engineering is all about changing raw materials into useful products you use every day in a safe
and cost-effective way, such as using fossil oil in making petrol, plastics and synthetic fibres and so on,” said
Professor Tey Beng Ti from the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia.
A member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), Tey has published more than 90 papers in leading
scientific journals. “Chemical engineers basically understand how to alter the chemical or biochemical state of a
substance, to create everything from face creams to fuels,” he said. The belief spurred Tey to launch a research
project eight years ago which has resulted in a discovery on how to simplify the production process of therapeutic
(治疗的) protein such as virus-like particles.
He said the current flu vaccine (疫苗) is produced in fertilised chicken eggs, but it has limitations. Firstly,
the virus yield is very low, and the egg supply could be affected by avian flu pandemics and so on. Apart from that,
people allergic to eggs cannot receive such vaccines. In his research, Tey sought to purify virus-like particles via a
chromatographic (色谱法的) purification process. This new method delivered up to 17 times higher product yield
and cut processing time by 6-10 times, compared to conventional approaches. So far, they have filed 9 patents in
Malaysia and published more than 50 articles in leading international scientific journals.
Tey said the work of a chemical engineer could be extremely diverse, but it would always be relevant.
“Whether you focus on developing future energy solutions, controlling pollution or protecting our environment,
your future as a chemical engineer is bright.”
32.Why are chemical engineers key to products?
A.They cut costs.
B.They master the characteristics of substances.
C.They end fossil-fuel use.
D.They minimize environment impact.
33.Which can replace the underlined word “spurred” in paragraph 3?
A.Inspired.
B.Ignored.
C.Stopped.
D.Discouraged.
34.What can we know about Tey’s chromatographic purification process?
A.It has replaced the conventional method.B.It is more efficient and productive.
C.It requires more raw materials.
D.It has been used in global markets.
35.What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A.The specific steps to become a chemical engineer.
B.Prof. Tey’s suggestions on environmental pollution.
C.The challenges chemical engineers face in the future.
D.The promising career prospects of chemical engineers.

For many high school seniors, spending free time on “unnecessary” things often feels like a waste. 36
But a small group of students in a town found something that’s both time-consuming and totally worthwhile:
building a community garden that could bring fresh vegetables to the local food bank and become a pleasant place
for neighbors to gather.
At first, it was hard. They had to clear weeds, carry soil, and learn to tell different seeds apart. 37
They learned to work as a team: one group watered the plants, another spoke with neighbors to ask for unused tools
or old flower pots, and others picked ripe vegetables. So far, the community garden has been well maintained.
“ 38 They considered it something slow and boring,” says Voss, a retired gardener who volunteers
at a neighborhood center. “But when they see how their work helps people in need, everything changes.” Now, Voss
and several other gardeners visit the students’ garden every weekend to teach them more growing techniques.
The good work of these teen gardeners has been noticed by a local environmental group. 39
They’re also planning to build a small shed (棚屋) next to the garden, where students can store supplies and hold
workshops for younger children, teaching them how to plant sunflowers or grow herbs.
The students sometimes struggle to balance schoolwork and gardening, but for those who love seeing their
efforts turn into fresh food and happy smiles, gardening is more than a hobby. 40
A.But they stuck to it.
B.These gardening lessons are not just about skills.
C.It’s a meaningful way to contribute to their community.
D.There is a way for Voss to make the garden work better.
E.After all, there are exams to prepare for and essays to write.
F.In the past, many young people thought gardening was just for older folks.
G.They’ve decided to support the students by providing free seeds and tools.

Last summer, I worked at a small restaurant, where the light was dim (昏暗) in the evening, to save money
for my college life. Sally, a waitress, had been training me.
One afternoon, I was cleaning the tables for the dinner shift when my manager, Teri Jo, came up to me. “I
know you are still learning, but it’s going to be just you, waiting tables, being the cashier and putting the dressings
(酱) on the salads, and the one cook,” she said. “Sally just called in sick. My daughter is about to have my first
grandbaby in the hospital, or else I’d be here.”
Teri Jo assured me I could handle everything and told me, “The salads are already made and in the front
refrigerator. All the other dressings are there except the blue cheese, which is in a vat (桶)on the floor of the big
walk-in refrigerator past the kitchen.” I made a mental note of that, for the few diners who might want the blue-
cheese dressing on their salads.
Soon, the cook and I began our dinner shift. At first, some regulars came in for quick meals. After a while,
one man I hadn’t seen before ordered the Cobb salad with the blue-cheese dressing.
I went to the back to look for the dressing in the large walk-in refrigerator. Thinking how clever I was, I
filled a small bowl with some of the dressing and put it in the front refrigerator, where there was a bowl of
something I later knew was pancake batter (面糊) just for lunch. That way, I wouldn’t have to go back to the walk-
in refrigerator in the dim light again.
I put the mixture on the man’s Cobb salad. The man spoke highly of it after tasting it. Five more new
customers overheard his words, ordered the same dressing and liked it. The six new customers promised to enjoy it
again the next evening.
The night shift went smoothly. I thought the manager would praise me for what I had done, especially for
saving extra steps for the blue-cheese dressing.
