13.What is the conversation mainly about?
A.Fighting fires.
B.Detecting fires.
C.Using fires.
14.How many fires did California have in 2020?
A.Around 50.
B.About 400.
C.Over 8,600.
15.What size of fire can the new satellites discover?
A.Size of a car.
B.Size of a plane.
C.Size of a sports field.
16.What is the woman’s main concern?
A.Saving animals.B.Saving the trees.
C.Saving humans.
【答案】13.B 14.C 15.A 16.A
W: We’re developing a new technology that can detect forest fires as soon as they start.
M: That sounds amazing. Given how many fires there have been recently, it’s something the world
extremely needs.
W: Indeed. In 2020 alone, California had over 8, 600 fires, losing roughly 4% of the state’s trees.
M: That is truly surprising.
W: Yes. The other place where it will be useful is Australia. At the start of the year, there were 50
separate forest fires burning across the country.
M: So how will your new detection system work?
W: We’re going to use a new range of satellites which have heat cameras.
M: Don’t other satellites have those?
W: Yes, but none is so advanced. They can detect a fire the size of a football field. The new one
can sense a fire the size of a car.
M: And will that be enough of a difference to stop the fire from spreading?
W: We believe so. Hopefully it will give firefighters enough time to stop it before it gets too big. If
they get the plane up in time, they could stop it dead.
M: If it works, I really hope you get recognition for it.
W: I just want to try and stop trees from burning, and more importantly, protect the poor animals
that live in them.
M: I know, we often only consider the human cost, never the animal one.

James Warren rides the public bus a lot in his
hometown of Denver. Then in January, Warren spotted a woman waiting for a bus. There was no
seating at the stop—and no sidewalk—so she sat in the dirt. So he decided to build a bench.
“I just took some scrap wood and went to town,” Warren said. He then realized that one
bench was far from enough. There are more than 9,000 bus stops in the Denver metro area, many
of them without seating or shelter. Warren carves “Be kind” on each one—each made from scrap
wood he finds in construction waste containers.“I met some ladies the other day who were talking about how they used the benches every
day,” Warren added. “It fills me up. It’s air in my tires.”
Warren said many people have hopped on his bench—making bandwagon, which has
motivated him to build more. “I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me on Twitter,” he said. “Some
people have wanted to come and help me.” Others saw Warren’s work in the local news and
decided to take out their tools, too. People also started donating supplies. “That puts me over the
moon,” Warren said.
Nica Cave, 26, a Denver mobility advocate, said, “The lack of infrastructure, shelter and
seating at transit stops marginalizes(边缘化) those who rely on public transit. People like Warren
are really encouraging me to see how people are willing to use their own time and resources to
provide these much-needed services.” Cave added that she hopes the local government will see
Warren’s benches and get involved.
That is precisely Warren’s goal. Warren—who is planning to organize a bench-building
workshop—said his hope is that his benches make a difference in his community and even
beyond. “My goal is to make people’s lives just a little bit better.” Warren said.
24.What do we know about Warren’s benches?
A.They are carved with his name. B.They can be found at any bus stop.
C.They are specially designed for women. D.They are made of recycled materials.
25.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.It is the source of my effort. B.My tires are almost flat.
C.I need to fill air into my tires. D.Praise is the best reward for me.
26.What made Warren feel happy?
A.The good sales of the benches. B.The assistance from other people.
C.The comments on Twitter. D.The awards from the local government.
27.What is Warren’s true purpose of organizing the workshop?
A.To earn more money to live a better life.
B.To set up his own bench-building workshop.
C.To encourage people to use more public transit.
D.To make people live a little bit better.
【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.D

C
Scientists at MIT have managed to change
ordinary spinach (菠菜) plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs. The
secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotech (纳米技术), which is scientific area that
deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they
normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small
changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth
of information to access.” That’s what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.
For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into
spinach plants. To get them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the
bottom of the plant’s leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its
roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in
the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant
before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly
using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning
email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.
The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the
future, their system could even use a cell phone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering
chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have
used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view,
there’s no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the
health of the land and water on their farms.
28.Why do the scientists use plants to do the experiment?
A.They are common in the daily life. B.They are environmentally responsive.
C.They absorb much carbon dioxide gas. D.They are small in size and easy to store.29.What’s the function of the carbon nano-tubes placed into spinach plants?
A.To control the camera. B.To contain the liquid.
C.To fix the tiny sensors. D.To give off plant light.
30.What can we say about the application of the experiment?
A.It’s diverse. B.It’s unexpected. C.It’s limited. D.It’s cheap.
31.What’s the suitable title for the text?
A.Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs
B.Spinach Sends Warning Emails Using Nanotech
C.Nanotech Helps Spinach Grov Healthily
D.Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.B
But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water
potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth of information to access.”
That’s what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.(“但实际上,它们可以感知土壤和
If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny
sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the
spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light.(如果水中含有炸弹
Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many
uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous
chemicals as well. From their point of view, there’s no doubt that in the future, such systems could
give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.(发现炸弹
故选A。
Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach
plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs.(麻省理工学院的科学家们成
“By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists setup a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.(通

Every Sunday at 2 p.m., Marisela Godinez, the
owner of El Mesón Tequilería, a Mexican restaurant in Austin, Texas, used to fill a 12-gallon
bucket, plus another half-bucket, with leftover food from the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat brunch
buffet. “We threw out a lot of food,” she said.
But a few months ago Ms. Godinez signed up to use an app called Too Good To Go. Now, 10
customers pick up “surprise bags” of her leftovers for $5.99 each, and she sends far fewer
leftovers to the landfill.
Too Good To Go has tried to gamify (游戏化) buying leftover food. In the United States,
customers in 12 cities can browse restaurants and stores, then reserve “surprise bags” that
typically cost about $4 to $6 and contain food that would have been originally priced at roughly
three times that amount. The bags can be picked up at a certain time window.
Around the country, apps that connect customers to businesses with leftover food have begun
to spread. The concept is simple: Restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of
food every day. Rather than trash it, apps like Too Good To Go and Flashfood help businesses sell
it at a reduced price. They claim that the businesses and buyers are helping the environment
because the food would otherwise become food waste, a big contributor to climate change.
Food production itself is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for
between a quarter and a third of global emissions. Each step of the process — growing,
harvesting, moving, processing, packaging, storing and preparing food — releases carbon dioxide,
methane(甲烷) and other planet-warming gases. When the food is wasted, so are all those
emissions. In addition, once unused food reaches landfills, it breaks down and releases more
methane.
According to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, at least a few
items for sale there aren’t necessarily what buyers might think of as “food waste.” A beverage (饮
料) company owner George White said he not only used the app to sell discontinued products, but
also sold new flavors there in hopes of attracting new customers.
32.Why did Ms. Godinez use Too Good To Go?
A.To advertise her delicate dishes. B.To reduce customers’ complaints.
C.To provide a range of recipes. D.To avoid wasting leftover buffet.

other meaningful things. Managing your time effectively, therefore, becomes a matter of critical
importance. Here are many things you can do.
Work out a plan in advance.
37 This will give you a measure of control over what is going to happen. Whether it
is a planner that you stick on the wall or a calendar app on your smartphone, finding an organizing
tool that works well for you is essential. Then, record all important events such as exams, projects
and rehearsals, so that you can prepare accordingly.
38
This is about the skill of organization. It refers to arranging your personal space at home. So
when doing your homework, you are in a tidy place, free from distractions. This includes putting
away your mobile phone until you have finished everything that needs to be done.
Prioritize (优先考虑) what needs doing.
There is only a limited amount of time in a day, and even with good planning and
organization, it is not always possible to complete everything that needs to be done. In such
circumstances, you will have to decide which task should be completed first. You should classify
the activities on the basis of their urgency and importance. 39 Then you can focus on
your objective and stick to it.
Once you start taking little steps every day to plan, organize and prioritize the activities you
intend to devote your energy, skills and talents to, you can spare more time to stay with family and
friends, pursue a hobby or work on personal development. 40
A.Create favourable conditions.
B.This classification is your ultimate goal.

“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on, ”
