题型一 阅读词汇和短语
(2025·浙江杭州·二模)Most people see innovation as a flash of brilliance and Eureka, a new world is
born. When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected
by fungus (霉菌), killing any colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to
the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and seemingly in a single
stroke, created the new field of antibiotics. The truth, however, is messier. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came
into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in
maternity wards ( 产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving scorn instead of fame. That was
because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular miasma theory, which attributed disease to “bad airs”.
After his death in 1865, germ theory was accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took
notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and
developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II raging, the War Production Board
enlisted 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics.
Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like
the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity
lies until they team up with other visionaries and corporations, who might have the resources to fast-track their
ideas. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius and the “eureka moment” breaks
down.
1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.An account of a lab story.
B.Redefinition of a traditional view.
C.Correction of a popular misconception.
D.An analysis of a scientific phenomenon.
2.What is the message conveyed about Fleming’s story?
A.Great minds think alike.
B.The early bird catches the worm.
C.Luck’s got your back when it comes to success.
D.Early work is a steppingstone to later breakthroughs.
3.What does the underlined part “ushering in” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Delaying.
B.Introducing.
C.Predicting.
D.Transforming.
4.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Great Innovations: Individuals Are True Heroes.
B.From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin.
C.The Lone Genius: Fleming’s Discovery of Penicillin.
D.The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens.
(24-25 高三下·安徽淮北·阶段练习)Every bookstore in Beijing used to have a massive fiction room
piled to the ceiling with great books. These days, you’re as likely as not to find that those rooms have been shrunk
down to the size of a solitary (单独的) table thickly covered with the latest releases and best-selling novels. This,
however, begs the question: Is fiction dying out, or is print media finally defeated by its electronic and audio copy
opponents?
Now that Kindle is leaving China, some say that maybe people will get back to traditional reading. I doubt it,
however. This downward-reading trend has been evident for a long time now. When Jeff Bezos first launched
Kindle, Steve Jobs from Apple said it would fail because “people don’t read anymore. It doesn’t matter how good
or bad the product is.”
But I don’t think reading itself is dying. It is merely becoming more functional — in other words, something
you have to do in order to get some practical benefits. Gone are the days when people just read for fun. Why
lumber (迫使担负) through a musty old book when you can watch an action movie or play a video game? Of
course, people know that these are poor substitutes(替代品)for a good book.
In fact, there is nothing better than getting lost in a great book. I remember reading Shackleton, the British
polar explorer, when I was a boy. After turning over the last leaf of this extraordinary adventure, I felt as if I, too,
had just been to the South Pole and back. This imaginary achievement translated into a sense of confidence which
must have been infectious, as soon afterwards all of my friends were themselves picking up books to read for fun.
Psychologists say that you are the average of the five friends you surround yourself with. We can learn from them
and they can also come to have a profound effect on our own habits and mindset. In this way, a book, too, can be a
mentor (导师). The ideas, advice, mindset, and experiences of other people living in other times can get transmitted
to us down through the pages of a good book.
In the age of fragmented information, the winners will be those who can stay focused. However, in a world
that easily gets distracted, deep reading seems to be getting further away from us. Our biggest problem is not
Kindle’s departure from China, but our own departure from reality. Great books transmit universal truths; get them
read. How exactly you do so is up to you.
1.The author mentioned Kindle in the text to _______.
A.praise its convenience and popularity in reading
B.explore the reason for the decline of print media
C.highlight the decreasing trend of traditional reading
D.show our regret for its departure from China’s market
2.Which of the following statements is true about Shackleton according to the passage?
A.He is famous for imaginary writing.
B.He finds nothing better than an old book.
C.He visited the South Pole many times himself. D.His adventure story influenced the author a lot.
3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.We should read more in order to escape from reality.
B.We have to accept the fact that Kindle is leaving China.
C.It’s necessary to find better substitutes for books like Kindle.
D.We need to face the reality that reading is becoming less popular.
4.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To discuss the future trend of reading.
B.To advocate the benefits of reading.
C.To analyze the reasons for the decline of reading.
D.To compare different forms of reading.

didn’t have high hopes for it. But the opposite happened: She was flooded, shipping out 1,200 orders in June of
2020 alone. In the past year, Detrinidad sent out more than 70,000 plants. Her success is just one example of
increased time at home leading to an explosion in the houseplant industry.
“Plants are in fashion right now,” says Dr. Melinda Knuth, a researcher from the University of Florida.
“People who live in plant-rich environments report a higher life satisfaction rating, ” she says. “Adding more nature
to our environment can change our mood and how we think.” Plants can improve our state of mind in a few ways
but the biggest is by decreasing our level of cortisol, the stress hormone (激素) in our body.
“Students who are around plants perform better academically than students who are in a classroom without
plants,” says Knuth. “This productivity also translates into the workplace for adults. Our study showed that there
was a 30% decrease in sick leave for people who were in plant-rich workplaces.”
If you’re among the groups of people who are enjoying the mental and physical health benefits of
surrounding yourself with plants, don’t beat yourself up if one (or a few!) doesn’t make it. “Doctors practice
medicine and lawyers practice law and you should allow yourself the practice it takes to sustain a plant. Tending to
plants is an exercise in patience and learning. Be invested in taking care of it, but if it dies, go get another one,”
Detrinidad says.
