I’m James. Burned out from work, I found life had become flat and that I desperately needed something to
shift my focus. One night I came across a website recommending scuba (水肺) diving lessons. I hadn’t ever thought
much about the idea of diving before; but its complete unfamiliarity fueled my interest; I decided to give it a shot,
and I had my training lessons at an indoor swimming pool. After completing the courses, I felt a sense of great
satisfaction and accomplishment for overcoming the initial fear and discomfort of breathing underwater.
Knowing I hadn’t yet experienced what real scuba diving is all about, I spent hours researching where the best
places to dive were. Before I knew it, I was on an airplane to Belize. Less than 24 hours after my arrival, and
minutes into my first ocean dive, I was literally diving head first into the deep end, finding myself 80 feet
underwater. It’s the kind of extraordinary water having such great visibility that you can see clearly for hundreds of
feet around you.
Within minutes our 4-person dive group was surrounded by numerous nurse sharks, a moray eel (海鳗), large
groupers and sea turtles. I was madly in love with scuba diving. As we reached the bottom, a lone nurse shark swam
right under me. More started to arrive. Just as I was shooting pictures of the action and not paying attention to
anything or anyone else around, I looked up to see a bright green threatening face headed straight for me. He wasn’t
the least bit shy. He had apparently never heard of personal space. After he decided to swim by me without causing
any bodily harm, I was both relieved and excited.
This will always be that one special dive that changed everything and I get to watch it any time I find myself
missing the water.
24.What pushed James to try scuba diving?
A.Thirst for fresh experiences.
B.Love for underwater events.
C.Cut-throat career challenges.
D.Online low-price campaigns.
25.What do we know about James’s first ocean dive?
A.He didn’t use former diving skills.
B.He didn’t adopt a gradual strategy.
C.He found the best diving location.
D.He made friends with other divers.
26.Why did James mention sea animals?
A.To underline their diversity.
B.To introduce their wildness.
C.To demonstrate diving appeal.
D.To promote ocean exploration.
27.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Why swim deep down?
B.How to overcome fear?
C.What underwater thrill?
D.When to chase novelty?

Jade Benjamin-Chung, an assistant professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, worked with her coworkers
to analyze the impact of hygiene (卫生) interventions on health outcomes in middle — and low-income Bangladeshi
households. They found many common strategies used to protect children from disease weren’t as effective as
expected. Feeling curious, Benjamin-Chung and her coworkers identified a potential reason.
Around 70% of rural homes in Bangladesh have soil-packed floors. As young kids eat and play on the floor,
they often absorb tiny soil-based parasites (寄生虫) that spread disease. So they thought about the concrete floors,
which could create a space easier to clean and reduce pathogen (病原体) spread.
Benjamin-Chung mentioned their idea to Sarah Billington, an expert on concrete and building materials from
the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. When Billington heard the team’s idea of broadly replacing soil-packed
floors with concrete, she worried the approach could have unintended consequences for the climate due to heavy
carbon emissions (排放) from concrete production.
So Billington invited other Stanford experts into the fold to understand why concrete was effective in
reducing pathogen spread and design low-emission concrete alternatives that kept those helpful properties. They
wanted to develop a mix using materials that’ re easily found in countries like Bangladesh. Finally, one possible
material was recycled fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal. The concrete mix was affordable, durable and produced
fewer emissions. Then they did an experiment where they hardened concrete test tiles ( 砖) made with alternative
“green” concrete and then some pathogens were put into the tiles to measure how well they survived on the surface.
The team’s findings suggest the pathogens have similar rates of survival on traditional concrete mix tiles and
“green” alternative fly ash tiles. “This project could be a model for how to improve public health with sustainability
baked in at the beginning,” said Benjamin-Chung.
28.What did Benjamin-Chung and her coworkers focus on initially?
A.The bad influences of concrete.
B.Disease spread in the neighborhood.
C.Hygiene practices in specific families.
D.Recycling methods of fly ash.
29.What made Billington invite other experts in?
A.Her lack of knowledge of pollution.
B.Her worries about health outcomes.
C.Her struggle with pathogen resistance.
D.Her concern about climate impacts.
30.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The alternative is effective at reducing disease spread.
B.Traditional concrete does more harm to people’s health.
C.The study helps reduce the cost of healthcare in Bangladesh.
D.The study offers good educational resources to medical schools.
31.What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.Strategies for Bangladeshi Public Health B.Sustainable Concrete for Healthier Homes
C.Hygiene Interventions in Low-income Homes D.Pathogens Spread through Building Materials
D

Imagine standing in front of a restaurant menu with countless options, each sounding appealing. You spend 20
minutes thinking, only to feel anxious that the dish you finally choose might not be the best one available. This is
“FOBO” — the fear of a better option.
“FOBO is the anxiety that something better will come along, which makes it difficult to commit to existing
choices when making a decision,” said venture capitalist Patrick McGinnis, who came up with the term, “Especially
if there are several options available, you worry that a better or even perfect choice might be out there, yet you
struggle to choose just one.” While it’s important to weigh pros and cons and think through major decisions, FOBO
keeps us caught in a loop (循环), forever chasing the unclear “what if”.
The concept of FOBO is based on a mistaken belief that “the longer we look, the more options we will have,
and this will somehow lead to a better outcome.” However, there’s no guarantee of this. Instead, people may wait so
long that they end up losing good options and regret not making a choice sooner. Constantly second-guessing oneself
and living in uncertainty can cause stress and exhaustion. Psychologist Patricia Dixon explains, “Mentally, FOBO
can contribute to anxiety and depression, as the constant search for better options prevents individuals from fully
enjoying their present circumstances. This mindset leads to dissatisfaction, weakens self-trust, and ultimately hinders
personal growth and connection.”
To overcome FOBO, the key is to streamline decision-making processes. Start by setting clear priorities and
narrowing down your options to make choices easier. Limit the time spent on decisions to avoid overthinking, break
down complex decisions into smaller, manageable parts, and gather only essential information. Trust your instincts
(直觉) and embrace the idea of focusing on finding a “good enough” option rather than obsessing over perfection.
Remind yourself that even if a better option appears later, you’ve already made progress.
32.Why do people experience FOBO?
A.They want to make decisions quickly.
B.They have few choices to select from.
C.They fear missing out on a better option.D.They tend to take account of others’ views.
33.What is a potential impact of FOBO on individuals?
A.It blocks their way to embracing different ideas.
B.It weakens their ability to analyze complex issues.
C.It prevents them from achieving a perfect outcome.
D.It makes them dissatisfied with their current situation.
34.What does the underlined word “streamline” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Extend.
B.Abandon.
C.Evaluate.
D.Simplify.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.FOBO: Decision-making Anxiety
B.Deciding Wisely: Avoiding Regret
C.FOBO: The Secret to Better Choices
D.Refusing Overthinking: Trusting Yourself

Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you’re angry, you may make rash (鲁莽的) decisions and say
something rude that you’ll likely regret. 36 You might feel long-burning anger that destroys your good
intentions, and makes you an unpleasant person. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent anger from ruining our lives.
Change your attitude to the way the world works. 37 Try to accept that other people do behave in
ways that will make you angry. Realizing this can help you reduce the intensity of your anger. When you expect
others to sometimes act imperfectly, you’re less likely to be thrown off balance by their actions.
38 Sometimes anger can be used to achieve great things. Martin Luther King was angry about the
lack of civil rights in the USA.Gandhi was angry about British domination in India. They both used that anger to
motivate themselves to fight against what they saw as injustice.
Don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something, or scream
when we’re angry. But giving in to these impulses (冲动) only make things worse. Instead, take a deep breath, count
to ten, and try to calm down. 39
Stop trying to manage your anger. 40 However, it often just leads to suppressing your feelings. A
much better way of facing up to anger is to identify the root cause. By understanding the underlying reasons, you can
address the core issues and create better ways to manage your emotions.
A.Don’t dismiss anger as a bad emotion.
B.Anger arrives quickly but it’s slow to pass.
C.Express your anger in a calm and wise way.
D.It is perfectly normal to experience emotions such as anger.
E.The actions of other people can be a significant cause of anger.
F.This can help you think more clearly and respond more effectively.
G.Anger management used to be promoted as a way of dealing with anger.

Jade has been revered in Chinese culture for over 4,000 years, 56 (trace) back to the Neolithic Age
when it was hailed as “the essence of heaven and earth.” During the Eastern Han Dynasty, scholar Xu Shen further
elevated jade’s status by attributing it to five virtues: benevolence, righteousness, wisdom, courage, and 57

(pure).
Historically, jade artifacts served dual purposes 58 status symbols and spiritual guardians. While
59 (official) flaunted (炫耀) intricately carved jade to signify authority, common people wore simpler pieces as
talismans (护身符) against 60 (fortune). Traditional Chinese patterns on jade pendants (吊坠) are rich in
meaning and diverse in form, often featuring auspicious symbols for longevity, prosperity, harmony, health, and
wealth. These designs, 61 (pass) down through generations, remain central to modern jade craftsmanship,
illustrating 62 ancient wisdom continues to shape contemporary artistry.
Today, jade retains its cultural resonance beyond aesthetics. A jade pendant is no longer just an accessory but
a statement of identity — a fusion of personal taste and ancestral heritage. Its smooth surface 63 (whisper)
tales of Confucian ideals, offering spiritual grounding in an ever-changing world. To hold jade is to touch the pulse
of Chinese civilization, 64 material beauty intertwines with timeless virtues, sustaining an unbroken
dialogue between past and present. They reflect the bearer’s personality, taste, and cultural identity, providing 65
(spirit) sustenance as well.

The Fall and Rise of a Star
I was certain that every student in my high school drama class noticed the paper shaking in my hands as I
stood up to try out for the lead role in the play, I wasn’t there by choice, but rather because the teacher required that
each of us have a try for a part.
As a “mode!” student, I went along with the request, even though it filled me with fear. I was small for my
age, wore secondhand clothes, and cried easily. I desperately wished to remain in my seat and disappear into the
background. However, there I was standing, on stage. Reading lines (台词), at least, was something I liked, So, I
began to read.
Within moments, the fear was gone. I was reading the part for the main character, “Star,” who possessed an
optimistic view on life despite being an orphan (孤儿). I wasn’t an orphan myself, but I felt like one. My father had
left us, and my mother worked during the day, attended school at night and spent her weekends buried in homework,
It was easy for me to believe that Star’s words were also my own. I finished reading and quickly returned to my seat.
When the teacher announced the cast list and called my name, I was lost in my thoughts.
“Patty,” she repeated, “you are Star, Come and collect your lines.”
“This cannot be! How is it possible?”  With a racing heart, I approached the teacher to get the pages.
I practiced every day — while walking to school, during lunch breaks, before bedtime, and even on
weekends. In the beginning, I was worried about forgetting my lines, but I managed to learn them by heart. My
confidence was gradually growing.
Then came the rehearsals (排练). It was during this stage that I began to doubt my confidence once again, I
was too nervous to act, I frequently forgot my lines. Then after several failures, I finally reached my breaking point. I
ran out towards the stairs and started to cry, “I can’t do it!”
