B
It was an early blow to my self-confidence. I was attending my first group meeting in the lab as a postdoc,
and I was pleased that I could follow most of the discussion. Then, in front of everyone, the professor turned to me
and asked about my previous accomplishments. I froze. As a PhD student, I had achieved lots to be proud of. But
all of those were in my home country of Brazil. Now I was in Washington, DC and I didn’t know what the word
“accomplishment” meant. So all I could say was “I don’t know”.
I had decided to do a postdoc abroad because I thought the training would help me secure a teaching position.
I applied for and received a Brazilian government fellowship to spend 18 months working abroad and got a position
in a lab. It all seemed so easy—until I actually started.
In a new country, I struggled. After the mortifying lab meeting incident, my confidence took another hit. The
paper I intended to publish did not materialize. I used to be invited to give talks. Now, I was asked to speak more
slowly because of my accent. My confidence was destroyed.
After months of self-doubt, I reminded myself that I had potential. I needed to do something to regain my
confidence. I thought a change of environment might be what I needed. So I made the move.
In another new lab. I still felt insecure. However, I was determined to make the most of the time I had. There
were more opportunities to interact with others, which forced me to talk more. It was awful at first, but with
practice I began to feel more confident in my English. I proposed new projects. I began to receive positive feedback
on my presentations.
My confidence is back. I feel a little like Wonder Woman. She was a strong soldier in her homeland. When she
left, she experienced obstacles and failures only to become even stronger than before.
24. What was the author’s reaction when asked about her previous achievements?
A. She felt insecure. B. She kept silent.
C. She was at a loss. D. She felt proud.
25. Why did the author go abroad?
A. To apply for government fellowship. B. To get a doctor’s degree.
C. To build her own lab. D. To gain experience for a position.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?A. I didn’t give a proper response in a lab meeting.
B. The paper I intended to publish did not materialize.
C. I was asked to speak more slowly because of my accent.
D. I reminded myself that I had potential.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A lab meeting incident B. I found my inside Wonder Woman
C. Brazilians’ confidence improved D. Poor English ruined opportunity
C 25. D 26. A 27. B
Now I was in Washington, DC and I didn’t know what the word
“accomplishment” meant. So all I could say was “I don’t know”.( 现 在 我 在 华 盛 顿 , 我 不 知 道
“accomplishment(成就)”这个词是什么意思)”可知,作者在巴西取得了很多值得骄傲的成就,但是现在她
在华盛顿,被问到以前的成就时,她不知道“accomplishment(成就)”这个词的意思,可见她是不知所措
的。因此,当被问及她以前的成就时,作者的反应是C项“She was at a loss.(她不知所措)”符合题意,故选
C项。
25. 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“I had decided to do a postdoc abroad because I thought the training would
因此,作者出国的原因是D项“To gain experience for a position.(为一个职位获得经验)”符
I was attending my first group meeting in the lab as a postdoc, and I was pleased
that I could follow most of the discussion. Then, in front of everyone, the professor turned to me and asked about
my previous accomplishments. I froze.
因此,第1段中带下划线的“it”是指的是A项“I didn’t give a proper response in a lab meeting.
My confidence is back. I feel a little like Wonder Woman.
因此,文本的最佳标题是B项“I found my inside Wonder Woman(我找到

Laird Kay had been a designer of wine storerooms for 12 years. But he never forgot his first
love,photography.
He started contributing as a photographer - mainly product shots. But as Kay took his photography
further,he found himself hanging out at airports for the first time in his life, combining his photography skills
with his other early love - airplanes.Asked to choose a symbol of beauty, most people might think of a work
of art.He,however,would say an airplane.
He started doing more and more airplane photography.More airlines found him on social media and
wanted to work with him.Laird Kay,who fell in love with planes as a child on vacation and who has always
seen aircraft as objects of beauty,as well as of convenience, became an airplane photographer.
However much love you have for the industry, being an airplane photographer has its drawbacks.
Sometimes it rains when Kay has been flown in for a shoot - "you go with it," he says. And for someone
who isn't great with heights,as he isn't,it can be tricky. "I was raised 10 feet, looking down on an A380.It was
terrifying, but once you were there, you were concentrating on getting the shots. But I've got sweaty hands just
thinking about it." he says.
Laird Kay is the living symbol of the term "getting there is half the fun".Except in his case,it's more like
99% of the fun!A look of absolute joy washes over him when he's on a plane. His art is also influenced by his
travels as a young boy to South Africa, his education as an urban planner and designer - and his extremely
sensitive eye that doesn't miss a single detail.
28.What makes Kay love airplanes that much? ______
A. Their beauty in his eyes. B. Their providing comfort.
C. His hanging out at airports. D. His experience as a designer.
29.How did Kay feel when photographing on an A380? ______
A. Fearful. B. Thrilled. C. Honored. D. Regretful.
30.What is the last paragraph about? ______
A. Kay's attitude towards fun.
B. Kay's great influence in art.
C. Contributors to Kay's success.D. Several ways of getting great joy.
31.What does Kay's story tell us? ______
A. Well begun is half done.
B. The person who is cornered will fight.
C. Where there is love, there is pleasing success.
D. Man learns little from success, but much from failure.
A 29. A 30. C 31. C
Laird Kay,who fell in love with planes as a child on vacation and who has
always seen aircraft as objects of beauty,as well as of convenience, became an airplane photographer(莱尔德凯小
故选A。
I was raised 10 feet,looking down on an A380.It was terrifying,but once you
were there, you were concentrating on getting the shots. But I've got sweaty hands just thinking about it.
故选A。
Laird Kay is the living symbol of the term"getting there is half the
fun".Except in his case,it's more like 99% of the fun!A look of absolute joy washes over him when he's on a
plane. His art is also influenced by his travels as a young boy to South Africa, his education as an urban planner and
designer - and his extremely sensitive eye that doesn't miss a single detail.(莱尔德凯(Laird Kay)是"到达目的
Laird Kay,who fell in love with planes as a child on vacation and who has
always seen aircraft as objects of beauty,as well as of convenience, became an airplane photographer(莱尔德凯小
Laird Kay is the living symbol of the term"getting there is half the fun".Except in his case,it's more
like 99% of the fun!A look of absolute joy washes over him when he's on a plane.
C。

Parents, teachers and caregivers have long believed in the magic of storytelling to calm and comfort
kids.Researchers working in pediatric (儿科) have now quantified the physiological and emotional benefits of
a well-told tale.
"We know that narrative has the power to transport us to another world," says Brocking-ton,who studies
emotions and learning at Brazil's Federal University. He adds, "Earlier research suggested that stories help children
process and regulate their emotions—but this was mostly conducted in a lab, with subjects answering questions
while lying inside functional MRI machines. There's little research on physiological and psychological effects of
storytelling in a more commonplace hospital setting."
So the investigators working in several Brazilian hospitals split a total of 81 patients aged 4 to l1 into two
groups, matching them with storytellers who had a decade of hospital experience. In one group, the storyteller led
each child in playing a riddle game.In the other, youngsters chose books and listened as the storyteller read them
aloud. Before and after these sessions, the researchers took saliva (唾液) samples from each child, then asked
them to report their pain levels and conducted a free association word quiz and analyzed samples.
Children in both groups benefited measurably from the interactions. Those who heard stories also reported pain
levels dropping almost twice as much as those in the riddle group, and they used more positive and light words to
describe their hospital stay. The study demonstrates that playing games or simply interacting with someone can
relax kids and improve their outlook -but that hearing stories has an especially dramatic effect. "The researchers
really tried to control the social interaction component of the storyteller, which I think was key," says Mar,a
psychologist at York University.
32.What does Brockington say about stories? ______
A. The effects of them are easy to show in labs.
B. They have a positive effect on kids' emotions.
C. They cause children to become more emotional.
D. The studies of them are often conducted in hospitals.
33.How did the investigators carry out the research? ______
A. By visiting and talking.
B. By making assumptions.C. By grouping and comparing.
D. By analyzing samples from earlier research.
34.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the research? ______
A. Its finding. B. Its purpose. C. Its approach. D. Its reason.
35.What is the main idea of the text? ______
A. Narrative skills play a role in storytelling.
B. Listening to a story does benefit kids' health.
C. Storytelling is popular with kids and their parents.

When speaking of a party, it often means there will be a lot of fun. 36 This is especially true if you
are running it on a budget. But as long as you are wise enough, it is possible for you to throw a party even if you
don’t have deep pockets. Take these tips to help you.
Define your budget for the party. 37 For instance, if you only have 50 bucks, it is not a practical
idea to buy new plates, glasses and the like. In that case, your money need to be saved for more important things in
the party such as food and drink.
3 8 Seek the help of your friends to decide on a theme for the party. Set a date to make your own
invitations and decorations. You can also check the Web for imagination when thinking of great party ideas without
extra expense.
Ask for contributions from your guests. A party is not always something you have to shoulder all by yourself.
39 It is also a good idea to make a request for their support of items other than food such as napkins, and
paper plates. With their help, your party will have a variety of good foods and adequate kitchenware without ever
shouldering all the bills yourself. Don’t forget to show your appreciation.
Keep your attitude positive throughout the party. 40 Instead, entertain your guests with a smile, and
the relaxing atmosphere will turn the party into a success. Even if it is within a budget, the most important thing
about a party is to make it memorable and fun for everyone in attendance.
A. Ask your friends to offer you a helping hand.
B. Get your imagination going for the party.
C. You can show your guests that you are enthusiastic.
D. You can ask your guests to bring their speciality to the event.
E. This way, you know what to buy for the party and what to set aside.
F. You are never supposed to wear an apologetic look for not having much.
G. This is not always the case, however, when it is your turn to throw a party.
G 37. E 38. B 39. D 40. F
36. 根据上文“When speaking of a party, it often means there will be a lot of fun.”(说到聚会,它通常意味着
;再根据下文“This is especially true if you are running it on a budget.”(如果你的经费紧
所以G项“This is not always the case, however, when it is your turn to throw a party.”(然而,当轮到你开派对时,
37. 根据上文“Define your budget for the party.”(确定你的派对预算。)
所以 E 项“This way, you know what to buy for the party and what to set
Seek the help of your friends to decide on a theme for the party. Set a date to make your own
invitations and decorations. You can also check the Web for imagination when thinking of great party ideas without
extra expense.
imagination going for the party.”(发挥你的想象力吧。)
Ask for contributions from your guests. A party is not always something you have to shoulder all
所以 D项“You can ask your guests to bring their specialty to
the event.”(你可以让你的客人带他们的特产来参加活动。)
40. 根据上文“Keep your attitude positive throughout the party.”(在整个聚会中保持积极的态度。);再根
Instead, entertain your guests with a smile, and the relaxing atmosphere will turn the party into a
所以 F项“You are never supposed to wear an apologetic look for not having

Dear Anna,
I am so glad to learn that you are going to enter a Chinese character writing competition. But you seem to be a little
worried about it and I have some advice for you.
As is known to all, a positive attitude to the competition contributes greatly to excellent performance. Therefore,
keep calm and confident before and during the process. Secondly, when writing Chinese characters, employ the
correct gesture of holding the pen, which, to some extent, determines the structures of your characters. Thirdly,
everybody has his or her own style of writing. It is this personal feature that says a lot about you, thus probably
enabling you to stand out among the competitors.
Hopefully the suggestions above will do you some good. And I do believe that, through your constant efforts, you
will achieve success eventually. Best wishes for you!
Yours,
Li Hua
It was early morning, yet already it had been a very bad day. One thing after another, the downward spiral (螺
旋) continued when a large bottle of orange juice slid from my hands and fell to the floor. Glass and sticky juice
splashed to the farthest corners of the kitchen. Shocked, I looked at the mess. Then I dropped heartbrokenly down
to the floor, my eyes filling with tears. The tears seemed to show that “today is just not my day.”
Bad day or not, things had to be done. Filled with anxiety and negative mental baggage, I got in my car to
drive into town. In the few minutes it took to travel to the bank I made a decision. I would be careful not to pass my
bad day off to anyone else. I would be friendly and polite. And I would NOT be angry when that careless driver
pulled quickly and rudely in front of me causing me to brake suddenly.
Standing in line at the bank, I was silently talking to myself. Actually, I was scolding myself. All of the events
that had accumulated and contributed to my bad day were, in reality, so very minor and trivial. I was over-reacting.
I was filled with self-pity. I tried to imagine the innumerable, individual lives that had been affected by terrorist
attacks, by war, by hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
For the second time that day my eyes filled with tears as I realized how disconnected I felt from all those
individuals who are trying to cope with truly miserable experiences in their lives. They all seemed so distant and unknowable, and this justified and strengthened my belief that I was being self-
centered and selfish. I was sure that all my efforts to be a caring and loving person were in vain.
A voice broke through my mental distractions. Somehow I had mechanically finished my bank transaction (交
易) and the teller was trying to get my attention. “Young lady,” she was saying, gently, “Young lady!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I looked up and into the eyes of the bank teller, a silver-haired grandmother with a gentle beauty.

I looked up and into the eyes of the bank teller, a silverhaired grandmother with a gentle beauty. Her keen
eyes reflected concern as she leaned forward and softly said, “I don’t know what is happening inside of you, but
please, believe me when I tell you that—everything will be okay.” And then she did something quite marvelous.
My hands were resting on the counter. She took her hands and placed them gently on top of mine. The touch was
quick but electric. And at that moment my world shifted.
In the moment of her touching my hands, my selfdoubt disappeared. I found understanding and acceptance. I
knew that love was being channeled through the heart of this beautiful woman directly into my heart. I was filled
with a deep awareness inside me—that I am loved. I was speechless. I smiled and gave her a little nod. It was myfirst smile of the day. But it would not be my last, as from that moment on my entire day was transformed.
