Eight-year-old Lily was a curious little girl who loved exploring the world around her. One day, Lily’s
mother asked her to go to the store to buy some groceries. Excited by the thought of being responsible, Lily happily
walked along the streets, her small steps filled with purpose and enthusiasm. The sun was shining, and the air was
filled with the scent (香味) of freshly baked bread from the nearby bakery, adding to her excitement.
As Lily walked into the store, she noticed a beautiful container of pink candies on the cashier’s desk. The
candies were wrapped in sparking wrappers, and they seemed to call out to her. She really wanted to buy them.
However, there was one problem-she didn’t have enough money to pay.
Then, Lily came up with an idea. She told herself it was just a little white lie and that no one would ever
know. It seemed like a simple solution to her dilemma (困境). She quickly put the candies into her shopping bag
and paid for the groceries, hoping that her secret would be safe.
That evening, Lily couldn’t help but feel regretful in her heart. The excitement of the day had faded, replaced
by a heavy feeling of guilt. She knew that what she had done wasn’t right. Her conscience (良知) was eating away
at her, causing her to lose sleep and feel restless. The candies, once a source of joy, now sat heavily in her stomach,
a reminder of her actions.
The next morning, Lily’s mother noticed her daughter’s troubled expression and asked her what was wrong.
Lily hesitated for a moment, the weight of her secret almost too much to bear. But then, the truth poured out of her
mouth like a waterfall.
“Mom, I have something to tell you,” Lily said, tears welling up in her eyes, “I took some candies from the
store without paying for them. I'm really sorry.” Her voice was small, but the sincerity in her words was clear.
Her mother’s face softened, and she pulled Lily into a warm hug. “Lily, I am proud of you for telling me the
truth,” her mother said gently. “But it’s important to understand that lying, even about something small, can hurt
others and ourselves. Let’s go back to the store and make things right.”

I flew through the back door, excitedly announcing to my mom, “Mom, I’ve been nominated (提名) for the
National Junior Honor Society!” My mother smiled with pride and replied, “I’m so proud of you, honey.”
Together in the family room, I began filling out the application for the Honor Society. It required proof of
possessing all the necessary candidate characteristics. The following day, I submitted the paperwork to my advisor
and didn’t give it much further thought.
Months passed, and one afternoon, as soon as I stepped off the bus, I rushed home with a letter from the
school regarding the Honor Society. “Mom,” I said, handing her the letter with tears welling up in my eyes, “I
didn’t make it. They didn’t choose me.” My mother hugged me and said, “Oh, honey, I’m sorry. There must have
been some kind of mistake.”
That night at dinner, I said sadly, “It’s not fair.” My mother agreed and then shared a story about her high
school friend who was intelligent and kind-hearted but never made the National Honor Society. Despite his hurt
and anger, he became a world-renowned lung cancer specialist, saving lives every day.
I grasped my mom’s message: not being part of the Honor Society wouldn’t define my future, but it was
certainly painful in the moment. However, seeing most of my friends get selected made those weeks especially
tough for me. I opened up to my parents about how difficult it was and declared, “This shouldn’t happen to anyone
else.” We brainstormed ways to improve the selection process and arranged a meeting with the school principal (校
长) to present our ideas.

After getting up late on a sleepy Sunday, I saw my dad at the kitchen table reading the Sunday edition of the
local newspaper. I made a quick sandwich and sat down next to him, asking him what was new. He turned to me in
low spirits and said the council was planning to tear down the community garden nearby. He mentioned that he
used to work on it with his dad, so the place had some childhood memories for him.
He then put down the paper, walked over to the closet and after a bit of hunting, pulled out a thick, black
bookInside, there were several old photos. After thumbing through a few pages, my dad found the one of him and
his dad together at the community garden, just as he had said “Wow, your cheeks were super rosy back then!” I
said, astonished.
With nothing planned for the afternoon, my dad and I decided to take a trip over to the community garden to
see how it was doing these days. Not good, as it turned out. Soda cans, cigarette ends and other garbage spread
everywhere. Pots of soil were still there, but the few plants that remained were either dead or dying.
We looked at each other and knew what we had to do. After gathering some tools and garbage bags, we went
straight to clean up the place. I phoned some of my school friends, and soon a half-dozen people were collecting
garbage and sweeping paths. Someone had even brought bags of fresh seeds and soil along with new flowers, so we
uprooted the old dead plants and flowers and planted new ones.
After a few hours, the community garden looked totally transformed. Despite our hard work, there was still
the matter of the coming council vote. We created a plan: to take photos of the garden and spread the news about
the vote. Using the photos, we would then collect signatures ( 签名) to show continued local interest and then
present them to the council.

Some of my earliest memories of music were the days when I played violin together with my grandpa, whose
favorite song was “Big Eyed Rabbit”. “As long as you’ve got music, you’ve got good company,” my grandfather
always said.
However, I didn’t have either in my life these days. Having left my hometown where my family and friends
were, I was in an up-hill struggle to earn money from temporary jobs as I battled to get auditions( 试听) for my
acting career in New York. Trapped in self-doubt, I felt alone and abandoned.
“Would I ever find happiness again?” I thought while visiting the park near where I lived. Suddenly, I heard
something unexpected—a sound that winded its way here. Somewhere nearby, an orchestra ( 管弦乐队) was
practising. I followed the sounds to a red-roofed building. Inside, the musicians had started to practice, stopping
and starting, trying again, laughing at some joke the conductor had made. I approached the director during a break
to admire the music. “This is a community orchestra,” he said, “you’re welcome to join. All you need is an
instrument.” If only I could afford to buy one! “I’ll keep that in mind,” I said to the director, and walked back
home.
The next day the director told me they would have a music show at the city centre and invited me to go with
them to get familiar with everything in the orchestra. I arrived early that day and decided to wander around. As I
past a bookstore, a sign made me stop short: Schumacher Violin Maker. I stepped inside. Stringed instruments hung
from the ceiling. At the very corner lay an old violin, which drew my attention. It reminded me of my
grandfather’s. An older man in a brown coat sat at a worktable, looking carefully over the top of his glasses as he
adjusted the bridge on a violin.
“It’s funny I noticed your shop today,” I said and told him my story.
“So, you need a violin,” he said when I’d finished, raising a bushy eyebrow.
“Do you happen to rent them?”

As my mom says, love is simple. There came a time in my life, over two years ago, when I had the desire to
impact someone’s life positively. My friend Kelley told me about a volunteer trip she had taken to Gary, West
Virginia, and it was a life-changing experience. After looking into service opportunities, I signed up to take a
volunteer trip to Gary.
Volunteer trips have become increasingly popular among young people seeking meaningful experiences. They
gain access to a wide range of volunteer projects concerning various fields such as education, environmental
conservation, community development, and more.
When we arrived in Gary, I noticed how different the town was from where I lived. Houses were built on little
hills. There were few stores or restaurants in town; most had closed. You were lucky to find a gas station or grocery
store.
My job was to help build a new school. The work days were long and hot. We awoke at 6 a. m. and worked
through the day in 90 degree heat. There were always encouraging people by my side who helped keep me going.
Anyway, it was an unforgettable experience.
Then last summer, I decided to challenge myself by taking a volunteer trip abroad with some other volunteers
and taking up meaningful volunteer work in a foreign community. My destination was a remote village in
Honduras, a country in Central America. I wanted to teach science to the poor children there.

Experience of training retired racing dogs led my husband, Steve and me to believe we could handle anything.
But we were wrong. When we adopted Ray, a dog with a hurt that made him stop racing, things got tough. He
retired due to the injury and quickly went to the adoption agency.
Ray had no other place to go. Behind his sweet face hid a dark and damaged soul and an aggressive (好斗的)
nature. Desperate to find him a home and not deliver him to the farm, the adoption agency rushed him to our door
when we offered to adopt. Our experience with dogs and a home without other animals made us perfect candidates,
and we were his best shot.
Ray jumped around our house. He tried to understand the enormous world he now lived in, a strange one
compared to the quarters he had known for so long. Adjustment would take time, but his inexperience, and
apparently ours as well, made coexistence interesting.
Patience and training with any new pet are important, but with Ray, they were vital. He didn’t listen to us, no
matter how nice we were. He didn’t understand he was a pet with a name. He did not respond to commands, love,
encouragement, or food. He had no idea what we expected of him. Like a creature from another planet, he had no
concept of life in our world.
Ray got really scared and would get angry when we left. In a madness he scratched (抓, 挠) at windows and
doors whenever we left the house. Concerned for his safety and the condition of our home, we locked him in a big
wooden box. But he resisted and tried to escape. The stress we encountered flooded us.

In Maplewood High School, honesty was a principle often discussed but not always practiced. Among the
students, Emma Turner was known for her honesty. She was diligent , always completed her homework on time,
and was trusted by her peers (同龄人) and teachers alike. She was also a model student, often helping others with
their homework and organizing study groups. Her reputation for honesty and hard work made her a natural leader
in her class.
One autumn day, the entire school was excited. The annual science fair was approaching, and the students
were busy perfecting their projects. Posters, models, and experiments filled the classrooms as everyone worked
diligently. Emma had spent weeks on her project about renewable energy. She devoted herself to various
sustainable (可持续的) energy sources, conducted experiments, and created a detailed display to showcase her
findings. She was confident it would impress the judges.
Her best friend, Max, however, had struggled to come up with an idea. He had procrastinated (拖延) , unsure
of what topic to choose, and now the deadline drew near. Max admired Emma and felt guilty for not being
prepared. In a moment of desperation, Max decided to “borrow” an older cousin's project and present it as his own.
Max was sure that no one at Maplewood would know.
The day of the science fair arrived, and the gym was filled with colorful displays, excited students, and curious
parents. The air was thick with the smell of poster paint and anticipation. Emma’s display attracted a lot of
attention. Teachers, students, and even a local news reporter stopped by to ask questions about her innovative ideas.
She felt a sense of pride and accomplishment.
As she made her rounds to view other projects she noticed Max’s project. Her heart sank when she realized
she had seen it before at a different fair years ago.

When I was in second grade, I had a teacher named Mr. Applebaum. He was a tall man with a kind smile, the
sort of teacher who always seemed to notice the little things about his students. He paid attention not just to what
we did, but to who we were. I didn’t know it then, but that year he surely changed the course of my life.
I wasn’t particularly good at math or spelling. My handwriting was messy, and I was terrible at staying in the
lines when we did color painting. But I loved to draw. Whether it was the break, snack time, or during lessons, I
was always doodling (涂鸦). My notebooks were filled with animals, smiling suns, and superheroes with oddly
shaped capes. I didn’t think much of it at the time; drawing was just something I loved to do.
One afternoon, as we were packing up to go home, Mr. Applebaum called me over to his desk. I remember
feeling a pang of nervousness — had I done something wrong? But when I got there, he wasn’t holding a stack of
unfinished math worksheets or pointing to the classroom rules. Instead, he held out a blue three-ring binder ( 活页
夹) filled with blank loose-leaf paper.
“This is for you,” he said, placing it in my hands. I stared at it, puzzled. “I notice you like to draw,” he
continued. “I thought you might need a place to keep all your works.”
I don’t think I fully understood what he was giving me at that moment. It wasn’t just paper and a binder. It
was the idea that my passion for drawing wasn’t just a pastime but something worth encouraging. To an eight-year-
old, it felt like magic — like being handed a key to a secret door.

It was unseasonally hot in the Australian state of New South Wales. By mid-afternoon on Thursday, the sun
was beating down and the clear blue skies showed no signs of the forecast rain. Adrian Main was doing what he
loved, working outside in the bushes (灌木丛) that surround the leafy suburbs of Sydney.
Guided by his love of mountain-bike riding, Adrian had founded Synergy Trails, a construction company that
specialized in installing narrow, winding dirt-bike trails in the bushes for weekend and competition riders. It was
dusty, dirty work at times, but with the trees providing shade and the only noise coming from his team and the local
birds, there wasn’t any place he’d rather be.
Over the years, the 40-year-old had encountered poisonous creatures while working around in soil, including
poisonous spiders and snakes, but he knew how to distinguish the non-threatening ones from the really dangerous
ones. Adrian was trained in first aid, though he never seriously thought he’d need it.
With the clock ticking down towards the start of the weekend, Adrian had only a few chores left to do. His
tool was in his vehicle, parked some 50 metres away. He considered getting it, but the job was small, and only a
light dig was necessary to get beneath the shallow soil and leaf litter. So he used his hands instead. However, just as
his fingers slid under the pile of leaves, he felt a sharp, deep pain in his left hand. Adrian quickly pulled out his
hand, only to see a spider on his left index finger. The five-centimetre-long black creature had its sharp teeth
firmly cut into the skin. The pain felt as if a nail were being hammered into his finger.
He shook his hand up and down hard to throw off the spider, and it finally dropped to the ground. It was a
fully grown male Sydney funnel-web, the most poisonous spider in Australia.

Adrian’s heart sank when he realized what kind of spider had bitten him.
