专题05 读后续写

(2025·云南普洱·一模)
Our young family had just moved from the tropical heat of Asia to what we believed would be a winter
wonderland. It was our first winter in Chicago but soon the sense of adventure we had for our new life gave way to
self-doubt and homesickness. And just as the animals were hibernating (冬眠), it seemed that so were our new
neighbors. As newcomers, we felt alone.
Then something happened at the beginning of December. It all began with a simple request from our eight-
year-old daughter, “Mommy, let’s put up a Christmas tree at home.” From her we learned that one of our neighbors,
a graceful woman across the block had put up a brcathtaking, luminous (夜光的) and lush tree, carefully placed in a
window for all to see.
At first, we didn’t pay too much attention to this request, for we had never put up a Christmas tree. But my
daughter’s repeated request made us go ahead with this first step: loaded with layers of clothing to fight the
unfamiliar cold, we tasked ourselves with finding a tree and the tree’s dangling adornments (悬垂装饰物) for our
daughter.
We didn’t realize it then, but that was the first time that we took time to wander around our block and
familiarize ourselves with our new town. We began to pay attention to the fresh air and the approaching Christmas
season.
When we finally selected our tree, we realized we didn’t have a car big enough to get it home. Of course, we
had not considered that. It was our first time. We had no choice but to carry it home. Out of breath, we each held on
to an heavy end of the tree.

When I was young, my father was a secondary school teacher in Edensor, England. As the breadwinner, he
was deeply engaged in his school responsibilities during my childhood. Consequently, I often felt distant from him
because he had few moments to talk or interact with me. My mother, a full-time housewife, managed the household
and took care of my younger bother and me, busting around the kitchen, bedrooms and grocery stores. The back
garden of our house was a special place for me; it was not only a secure spot for kids but also my dad’s favorite
hobby area. Whenever he was home, he would spend most of his spare time looking after his treasured roses, which
my mother also adored.
My father would care for his roses with great devotion and affection. Often, I would watch beside him,
curious or eager for his attention, but he was usually preoccupied ( 全神贯注). He regularly watered the roses,
cleaned the leaves, loosened and turned over the soil, and fed them with essential nutrients. His expectation was the
joy and sweetness brought by their blossoming.
One day, I saw him cut off some branches and stems. Then, with a sharp knife, he carefully made marks on
the main branches. He cut open the marked spots to insert sprouts (嫩枝) into those new cuts and wrapped them
with bandages. After all his efforts, he reminded us never to touch them. From then on, whenever my father
returned home from work, he would go straight to tend to those plants.
Within a month, we all witnessed the entire process: tender stems grow, form buds, and finally bear blossoms
in various colors. The garden soon became a place of immense beauty, filled with rose blossoms and surrounded by
their sweet fragrance. My parents truly enjoyed themselves there, and so did my brother Tommy and I. Those roses
brought us immense happiness, and no one, especially me, wanted to let go of such beauty.

It was a sunny afternoon in the park. The grass was green, and the flowers were in full bloom. Children were
playing, and people were walking their dogs. Among them was a little girl named Emma. She was skipping along
the path, enjoying the beautiful day.
Suddenly, she heard a faint meowing sound. She stopped and listened carefully. The meowing seemed to be
coming from a nearby bush. Emma walked over to the bush and had a quick glimpse of inside. There, she saw a
tiny, frightened kitten. The kitten was all alone, and its fur was dirty and matted (乱蓬蓬的).
Emma felt so sorry for the kitten. She slowly reached out her hand, trying to coax (哄劝) it to come to her.
The kitten was hesitant at first but then sniffed her fingers and allowed her to pick it up. Emma cuddled the kitten in
her arms, trying to warm it up. She looked around, hoping to find the kitten’s owner, but there was no one in sight.
Emma decided to take the kitten home. She knew her parents might not be too happy about it, but she
couldn’t just leave the poor thing. When she got home, her parents were surprised to see the kitten. Emma
explained what had happened and begged them to let her keep it. Her parents looked at each other and finally
agreed, but only if she took good care of it.
Emma was overjoyed. She gave the kitten a bath, carefully washing away the dirt. The kitten meowed softly
as she dried it with a towel. She then made a cozy bed for it in a box and gave it some food and water. The kitten
ate hungrily, as if it hadn’t eaten in days.
Over the next few days, Emma spent all her free time with the kitten. She named it Whiskers. She played
with it, taught it to use the litter box, and took it to the vet to make sure it was healthy. Whiskers grew stronger and
more playful.
One day, Emma took Whiskers to the park where she had found it. She wanted to show it the place where
their adventure began. While they were playing, a woman approached them. She looked at Whiskers and gasped
(倒吸气).

As a forest ranger (护林员), I was making an inspection tour as usual on a misty dawn. Boots sank into the
damp path, each step breaking the deep quiet of the ancient woodland. As I adjusted the camera trap on a trunk, its
lens (镜头) was still covered with raindrops from last night. Suddenly, a weak crying sound cut through the fog.
Pushing through wet bushes, I stopped instantly. There, in the shallow muddy river, lay an elephant calf (幼
崽). Its reddish-brown fur was dirty with mud. The calf’s back leg was trapped unnaturally beneath a messy pile of
old wire netting — the kind illegal woodcutters used to mark territories. Old metal pieces were cruel marks of
humans in this wild nature reserve. His dark brown eyes locked onto mine, and unexpectedly my normal forest
check became a fight against time.
The calf struggled with little strength, and its leg got stuck tighter in the sharp metal wires every time he
moved. I thought of Professor Liang, an expert in wildlife protection, who once said, “For endangered species,
humans are both threat and hope.” Therefore, I carefully opened my field work-box. The scissors felt tiny as I tried
to cut the wires. One wrong move could hurt the calf. Just as I started cutting, a roar came from the fog.
Behind me, the bushes shook violently. Out of the mist came an adult elephant, with ears flapping (拍打)
like a storm cloud. She stopped ten steps away, strong muscles tense under gray skin. The morning sunlight cast the
mother’s shadow over the trapped calf. We formed a tense triangle — human, mother and calf — bound by fear. A
sharp cry of a bird cut through the tension. Its black wings broke the quiet, as if nature itself was watching this
delicate moment.

In the busy world of healthcare, a young nurse named Mary boarded on a journey to specialize in cardiac (心
脏的) care, a field as challenging as it was rewarding. With a heart full of hope and a mind eager to learn, Mary
began her career at a local hospital, where every day was a new lesson in life and death.
One sunny morning, Mary received an invitation to attend a cardiac arrest (心脏停搏) training course at the
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Excitement coursed through her veins as she prepared to join her colleagues
in a simulation room designed to imitate the intensity of a real emergency. As they gathered, the atmosphere was a
mix of nervous energy and focused determination. The training began with a lecture on the latest agreement for
responding to cardiac arrests, the importance of every second in saving a life. Mary listened intently, her eyes wide
with the gravity of the knowledge being shared. The hands-on practice was where Mary truly came alive. With each
attempt, she felt her skills sharpening, her confidence growing. She learned the art of teamwork, the dance of life-
saving measures that required understanding and precision.
Her colleagues became her lifeline, and together they navigated the complexities of each situation. The
training was not just about the physical act of saving a life; it was about the mental courage required to face the
harsh realities of cardiac care. Mary understood that she would carry the weight of her patients’ lives in her hands,
and the responsibility was not one to be taken lightly.
As the day drew to a close, Mary felt a sense of accomplishment. She knew the road to becoming a cardiac
care specialist was long and tough, but she was ready to face the challenges head-on. With each step, she was not
just saving lives; she was fulfilling her destiny, one heartbeat at a time. Mary was more than a nurse; she was a
guardian of hearts, and her story was just beginning.

It was a bright and sunny day in Green Valley, the kind of day that made the town’s name seem particularly
fitting. The streets were busy with activities as people went about their businesses, the laughter of children playing
in the park mixing with the distant noise of traffic. High school student Emily was walking to school from home,
her mind filled with thoughts of the upcoming science fair. She had been working on her project for weeks, pouring
her heart and soul into it, and today was the day she would present it to the judges. Her project was about
renewable energy, focusing on a novel solar panel (太阳能板) design that could potentially increase efficiency by
30%. She was confident that it would impress everyone, not just because of its scientific advantages, but because it
represented a step towards a greener future.
Emily had spent countless hours researching, experimenting, and perfecting her project. She had even
managed to get a small fund from the local community government, which allowed her to purchase some of the
more expensive materials needed for her project. Her classmates, teachers, and even her parents were all excited to
see the results of her hard work. As she walked, she mentally rehearsed (预演) her presentation, making sure she
had all the key points memorized and that her explanations were clear and accurate.
The science fair was not just an academic competition for Emily, it was also a platform to showcase her
passion for environmental sustainability. She knew that the judges would be looking for innovation, practicality,
and a deep understanding of the scientific principles involved. She was ready to prove that she had all of these in
her model. With each step, her excitement grew, and she could hardly wait to show her project to the world.

There are so many sweet souls in animal shelters that are just waiting for their owners to find them and take
them home. Sadly, bigger and older dogs are usually overlooked in favor of smaller pups. Some people mistake
them for being too frightening. But these big animals are actually sweethearts who will love you unconditionally. A
dog named Petey is a typical example of this. After being stuck at a shelter for over a year, he finally found his
forever home.
Petey was known for his cheerful behavior and was popular in the shelter. He is bigger and older than other
dogs, which made some people mistake him for being too frightening, so he had run out of time at a small
overcapacity shelter with no potential adopters lined up for him.
That’s when the staff of the shelter reached out to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(SPCA) of Wake County to help him find his forever family.
Despite these developments, Petey never lost his spirit and was excited about the move. “As soon as he got
here, he was pulling on the leash trying to get through the door. He ran into the building with his tail shaking,”
recalls Simon Ranlet, a staff member of the SPCA.“He was super friendly and very playful from day one. We
couldn’t believe that nobody wanted him.”
To help Petey find his forever family, Simon got Petey’s detailed information including some photos and
videos from the shelter. One morning, Simon and his colleagues were watching Petey’s photos and videos. They
wanted to find a way to help Petey.
“How cheerful his behavior is! So friendly and playful. Can we post his photos and videos on social media to
help Petey find a suitable adopter?” one of Simon’s colleagues suggested.

When I was seven, my sister Lucy, who was four, and I were eager to be independent and earn some money
to show our parents that we were capable beyond our years. The only idea I could come up with was to offer our
services as gardeners, going door to door to propose weeding neighbors’ gardens for 2 dollars each.
Our proposal was fair, yet unexpectedly, only Mrs. White, living three blocks from our house, accepted the
offer. Maybe that was because no one would take children’s words seriously. We agreed on the weeding at 8:00 the
next morning. Having the first client, Lucy and I couldn’t contain ourselves and felt as if we had achieved a
monumental task, hearts swelling with pride. We were going to be gardeners! But the excitement of the moment
was fleeting, and the next day, the attraction of play and the forgetfulness of childhood overtook us. We forgot
about our commitment.
Concerned about our absence, Mrs. White contacted our mother. As we walked into the kitchen through the
back door at 11:00 a. m. , Mom had just hung up the phone. She asked about our little gardening business.
Surprisingly, she wasn’t angry, instead, she found our initiative amusing. She explained that Mrs. White had called
her, expressing disappointment over our broken promise. Faced with the mistake, we admitted our oversight and
promised to make a sincere apology sometime. Instead of criticizing us, Mom busied herself with lunch
preparations as if nothing had happened. We did feel a touch of guilt, but it was quickly overshadowed by what
Mom said next.
As we mouthed on sandwiches, Mom casually asked, “Would you was like to go to Disneyland this
afternoon?” We sprang into action, bathing and dressing, which was like getting ready for a birthday party. We
rushed outside, not wanting to miss the bus that would take us downtown. The sun was high in the sky as we stood
outside, our bags packed and hearts full of anticipation.

Every spring, the posters appeared around our neighborhood, inviting parents to sign up their kids for the
National Basketball League. It was a fun way to spend weekends in spring, and introduced kids to the joy of the
game on ball courts.
But things were a little different in my family. My father knew next to nothing about basketball or sports in
general. His most genuine wish as a boy came when he was taking PE class, “Please, please, please don’t let the
ball come to me.”
He later became the father of eight-year-old me, who was interested in the sport. Saturday mornings, he had
to take me out to the playground and we’d play ball with a few other young boys and their dads. He was so glad
those fathers could coach and knew the rules of the game.
He’d play catch with me, and thanks to his weak arms, the ball would drop near his feet before I could get in
position to catch it. After a few too many misses one day, I sank to the ground and said, “How am I ever going to
make the major league?”
Deep down in my heart, I wanted to tell him, “You are the wrong dad!” I meant it! I still clearly remembered
that when he’d gone to the sporting goods store, he bought me a pair of gloves for a baseball player. How could a
basketball fan want gloves for the game he had no interest in at all? That’s how clueless he was.
Still, he wanted to find some way of giving me confidence on the court, the confidence he’d never had since
childhood. There was an official Teen League in our area, but it was super-competitive and only welcomed older
boys. He wanted something that welcomed younger boys like me, something that welcomed athletically talented
fathers like most fathers, and most importantly, something that welcomed with-no-athletic-talent fathers like him.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to
our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not
having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply
understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions
seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could
make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting
to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even
if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being
as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire,
so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—
only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still
dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
