专题05 读后续写

(2025·河南安阳·二模)
I have spent my whole life as a teacher—first teaching at a high school and for the past 50 years working as
a speaker and trainer in the human development field. I am often on the road three weeks out of every month flying
from city to city to conduct one-day workshops and week-long training sessions. In other words, I have almost no
time for other things.
I learned early on that if you want a concept or principle to be remembered, you must illustrate it with a
moving story. So I had always collected and used a lot of stories to drive home the points I was teaching in my
seminars( 研讨会)about the importance of acting from love, believing in yourself and your dreams, always
following your heart, trusting your intuition(直觉), setting high goals, overcoming obstacles, and never ever giving
up on your dreams.
Two years ago, a strange thing happened. One day, out of the blue, someone asked me, “Is that story you told
about the Girl Scout who sold 3,526 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies in one year in a book anywhere? My daughter
needs to read it.” The very next day someone asked, “That story about the boy and the puppy—is that in a book
anywhere? I need to read it to my son.” It continued day after day for the next month. “I need to read that story
about the boy with one leg who became a star to my staff. I need to show them that they really have no excuses not
to excel in life.” “Is that story you told about the boy who was burned in the motorcycle accident in a book
anywhere? I want to send it to my son in college.” Day after day I was asked the same question— “Is that story in a
book anywhere?”
I was busy with work. I had countless stories, but they were all over the place, in my head or on old notes. I
knew I couldn’t meet these demands while keeping up with my teaching.

How hard could it be to cook a turkey? After all, I watched my grandma and mom cook it for as long as I can
remember. They would place the turkey in the roaster and then put it in the oven (烤箱). And, just like that, every
year a perfectly golden-brown, roasted turkey appeared on our festival table. But I never paid much attention to the
process. My focus was only on the festival.
I remember the year when things would be different. Although my dear grandma had been gone for several
years, that was the first holiday when my mom had passed away a few days ago. Facing the first festival without
my grandma or mom, I quickly realized I suddenly became responsible for the festival dinner. I felt sad and
nervous. After all, I’d never cooked a turkey. But I was determined to fix a nice holiday dinner for my husband and
our two teenagers. They’d been close to their grandma and missed her, so I wanted to make this festival special for
them, to ease their sadness at least for a bit.
After I purchased the frozen turkey in our neighborhood Kroger supermarket in the early morning, I went
home to prepare the holiday dinner.
Back home, sunlight streamed through the kitchen window where three generations of women had once
stood. As I unwrapped the turkey and placed it on the counter, I started to panic, feeling completely lost. I even
didn’t know where I should start from. Memories of the past time with my grandma and mom flooded into my
mind. Tears started flowing slowly. Suddenly, I remembered my mom had an old cookbook which she got from my
grandma. I searched for it in a box and finally found it. I opened it, flipping (翻阅) through the pages until I found
the turkey recipe.

A Birthday Surprise
I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn chair staring out at the lake.
Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side. Papa’s hand absently stroked ( 抚摩) the head of his old
companion as they dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun. “He does this day after day?” I
asked Mama.
She nodded, sadness filling her eyes. “I don’t know what to do for him. There is a strong desire in his eyes
that I can’t satisfy -a desire for the past. The past can’t be brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are
gone forever,” Mama sighed.
“I’m going down to talk to him,” I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee. “What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours
you spend out here?” I asked,
“We’re not thinking,” he said softly. “We’re wishing.” I sat on the grass beside his chair. “Wishing for
what?” “For the impossible, I suppose,” he sighed. “You always told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted
it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it,” I reminded him.
He laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. “But Ralph and I have come to learn that when
you reach our age, some things are actually impossible.” “Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly?” I
asked.
Papa grinned (咧嘴大笑), and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his dream becoming a reality. “Ralph
and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the lake again. We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing,
drinking beer and eating sandwiches,” Papa said.
Yes, I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves on the lake on weekends.
They’d start for home when the sun went down, totally satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was
almost eighty-five years old and had a heart condition, so Mama was horrified by the idea of him going out on the
lake again at first. But eventually I managed to convince her.

In a small village, there lived a young girl named Lily who was known for her love of flowers. Her garden
was a kaleidoscope of colors, filled with roses, tulips, and daffodils. But among all the flowers, there was one
special rose bush with petals of the deepest red, a gift from her grandmother before she passed away. Lily believed
that the petals of this rose held a magical power: each petal symbolizes the hope and passion for life.
One fateful summer, Lily was diagnosed with a rare illness. As her health worsened, so did the vibrant colors
of her garden. The petals of the special rose began to fall one by one, mirroring her own physical decline. Each day,
Lily would count the remaining petals, believing that when the last one fell, her time would come.
Her neighbor, an old artist named Mr. Thompson, noticed Lily’s sadness and learned about the significance
of the rose petals to the girl. He was a kind-hearted man, known for his failing to create the perfect painting — his
“masterpiece” that he had always dreamed of but never completed.
One stormy night, as the wind howled and the rain beat against the windows, Mr. Thompson made a
decision. He would paint a replica of the last petal on the rose, so realistic that it would fool even the sharpest eye.
He worked throughout the night, each stroke (一笔) a dance of determination and hope.
The next morning, the last petal on the rose was still there, clinging to the stem despite the storm. Lily, weak
but curious, looked out the window and saw the petal for a long time, seemingly touched by the scene. It was then
that she realized the power of hope and the love that others had for her.
Days passed, and Lily’s condition began to improve. The doctor, who had initially predicted that she had a
slim chance of survival, was amazed at her recovery. Lily knew it was Mr. Thompson’s act of kindness that gave
her the will to fight. She couldn’t wait to thank him.

Fresh out of college, I had a job as a receptionist at an optical store ( 眼镜店). We had both nice and
unpleasant customers — people we were afraid of seeing walk in the door and others who saved the day with their
cheer or charm.
One lovely elderly couple would come in often for one thing or another. The woman with her gentle smile and
warm manner, was very sweet. She had a curious mind and often engaged me in conversations about our products
and services, but she also loved to chat about everyday life. There were days when it was so busy that taking the
extra time with her was challenging, but she was so very likeable and undemanding that I let her go at her own
pace. In truth, I really liked the woman and her husband and imagined it would be lovely to have them as
neighbors.
One day, Mr. Petrucci came in and walked up to my desk rather than taking a seat in the waiting area, his
eyes with blood shot full of sadness. It was unusual for him to come in without his wife, but that didn’t register
with me at first. I greeted him warmly and asked what he needed. He hesitated for a moment, then quietly told me
that he didn’t need anything; he had just come in to see me. Finally, he revealed the heartbreaking news that his
wife had passed away. The news hit me like a ton of bricks. My heart shattered into pieces as I imagined the
immense pain he must be enduring. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes as I imagined the pain he must be
going through, losing a woman he clearly loved and had been with for most of his life.

It was a seemingly ordinary day when the crew of the fishing boat, the “Ocean Breeze”, set sail from the
small coastal town of Seaview with its mast (桅杆) standing firm. Captain Jack, a seasoned sailor with decades of
experience, led the team of five young and eager fishermen. The sun shone brightly, and the sea was relatively calm
as they headed out to their usual fishing grounds.
As the day wore on, the sky began to darken. Clouds rolled in from the horizon, and the wind picked up
speed. Captain Jack noticed the change in the weather and decided it was time to head back to shore. But as they
turned the boat around, they realized they were in trouble. The waves had grown into towering monsters, crashing
against the hull (船体) of the “Ocean Breeze” with a force that made the boat shudder (颤动).
The crew members, who had initially been excited about the day’s catch, now, faced a terrifying situation.
Rain lashed down, reducing visibility to almost zero. One of the fishermen, Tom, a young lad on his first long-
distance fishing trip, was visibly shaken. “Captain, what are we going to do?” he shouted over the howling wind.
Captain Jack, his face set with determination, barked out orders. “Everyone, stay calm! Secure the equipment
and hold on tight!” he yelled. The crew quickly sprang into action, tying down loose ropes and making sure the
hatches (舱口) were tightly closed. But the storm was relentless (不停的). The boat was tossed from side to side,
and water started to leak in through the cracks.
Suddenly, a massive wave hit the boat, causing it to tilt dangerously. Tom lost his balance and was thrown
towards the railing (栏杆). He clung on for dear life, his hands slipping on the wet metal. “Help!” he screamed.
At that moment, Mike, another crew member, grabbed Tom’s arm and pulled him back onto the deck. “Are
you okay?” Mike shouted. Tom nodded, his eyes wide with fear.
The situation on the boat grew more desperate by the minute. The engine sputtered (发出噼啪声), and for a
moment, it seemed as if it would die completely. Captain Jack fought to keep the boat steady, but the storm showed
no signs of abating (减弱).

On Christmas morning, the freezing wind blew into my small apartment. “Another lonely Christmas,” I
whispered, holding my last dollar, with my stomach empty.
Earlier that year, I had to leave school because my parents’ financial situation had taken a turn for the worse,
and they couldn't afford to support my education any longer. Now, with no job and no friends in this new city, I
touched the holes in my old green coat-a reminder of happier times when I was carefree on campus.
I put on the coat, its torn shoulder blowing in the wind, and stepped outside. In the park, I sat on a cold
bench. "Please, help me," I cried into my hands. The snow felt like sharp pins on my face.
I left the park and walked down the street full of holiday lights. Rain and snow soaked (使湿透) my coat
when I passed a coffee shop. Inside, people in nice dresses laughed over hot drinks. I pressed my hand against the
window, leaving a foggy mark. I counted my last dollar. Tea cost more. Sadly, I turned back.
As I heard a bell ringing, I noticed a charitable organization volunteer standing next to a red donation bucket.
This organization was raising funds to help those in need. My hand trembled as I held my last dollar. I thought to
myself, "You can still work and earn more money. They need this dollar more than you do." Finally, I placed it into
the bucket.
That afternoon, I opened my bank letter. “$1,000?!” I shouted. My hands shook as I went to the bank to
check. “We found a deposit (存款) that was added earlier,” the manager said, looking at my wet clothes. “But I
didn't have any savings,” I responded. “It’s from a charitable organization, Miss,” he said kindly. As I walked back
home, I couldn't help but think this might be a sign that things were about to get better and that I needed to find a
way to give back.

My wife Lila a and I were in the middle of a heated discussion. Our 19-year-old son Andy, who was blind,
wanted to attend a college far across the country. Lila a was extremely worried.“But how will he manage on his
own? He's blind!” she exclaimed. I understood her concerns, but I believed Andy was clever, ambitious, and
confident. I said, “He's nineteen. He wants to try things independently. We've done all we can for him. It's time to
let him go.”
Then, I brought up the story of Gertie. In the third year of our marriage, before our children were born, a pair
of geese arrived at the small lake on our farm with a flock( 群)of Canada geese in late April. After the flock left,
these two geese stayed. We were excited when they started nesting in the southeastern corner of the lake.
However, it was about three weeks later that disaster struck. One evening, as I was taking a rest on the
platform, weary from a long day on the farm, and Lila a was working in the garden beside the house, we heard loud
honks and wing-beating sounds from the lake. By the time I caught up with Lila at the nest, the male goose was
dead, its neck broken. Lila found the female goose, badly injured with a broken wing, a bleeding leg, and a missing
eye. I suggested putting it down, “It'll never make it. Only one eye. A broken wing. An injured leg. And if it does
live, it will die of sorrow. They say that geese mate for life.”
But Lila was determined to save it. And she proved me wrong. She drove the goose to the vet (兽医) that
night.
Lila a fixed a bed for her by the lake and for several days, Gertie, as she named her, barely moved. It was
many days before she picked up eating.

Our swim team always relied on the Snack Bar to raise money for meets and equipment, but Coach Abby
had bad news: it would be closed for repairs through August, meaning no money for upcoming events. Everyone
was worried. “Does this mean our swim team is canceled?” Noah asked. Coach Abby comforted us, saying we’d
still practice, but she wasn’t sure how the meets would be funded.
The next morning, practice felt strange. None of us were swimming our best, and even Coach Abby was
worried. During a break, Noah suggested, “If we can’t run the Snack Bar, maybe we can think of other ways to
raise money. ”
“Good idea. ” said Ruby. She suggested a karaoke sing-along (卡拉 OK) like what her brother did to raise
funds for his school singing club. Tamara recommended a bake sale. “A .fall festival would be fun!” I added,
thinking we could have water-themed games on grounds by the swimming pool.
At first, Coach Abby hesitated. But when she saw how excited we were, she agreed, “OK! Let’ s go for it!”
We quickly began brainstorming ideas for our Support for Pool Party.
“I’ll bring my karaoke machine. ” Ruby offered. “We could make the microphone look like a fish!” someone
added. I suggested a “Fun in the Sun” lemonade stand, and everyone jumped in to help. Soon, we had a plan for the
best fundraiser ever, complete with a starfish cookie bake sale. We were ready to make it happen! We spent so
much time getting everything ready and talking up our fundraiser to everyone we met that we were positive it
would be a great success.
The day before our big event, I was squeezing lemons for lemonade when I saw a very dark cloud outside
the kitchen window. “Uh-oh! That’s not a rain cloud, is it?” I asked my mom. “Rain would be a disaster! It could
ruin everything. ” “You know what they say, ” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. ”
“Hmm, ” I said.

When Rosa was still a young girl, her parents decided to send her from their home in Tehran, Iran, to live
with her aunt in London, England.
The journey was long, and as she flew to England, Rosa spent much of the time imagining what her new life
would be like. She was determined to do well at school and make her parents proud.
However, when she arrived at the airport in London, it was not quite as she had imagined at all. Worst of all
was the feeling that everybody was looking at her with strange eyes. Rosa noticed with surprise that she was the
only one wearing a scarf.
London proved to be a very strange and unfamiliar place. It rained constantly every day during the first
week, and Rosa was unimpressed with what she thought was British summertime. Despite being told that her
English was good, she struggled to understand people’s accents and slang (俚语). The young girl felt disappointed
with her new surroundings and she missed her family and friends dearly.
When the day came for Rosa to go to her new school, she was extremely nervous. Her aunt tried to comfort
her, saying, “I’m sure you’ll make lots of friends today. You just wait and see.” But things didn’t go as smoothly as
her aunt had hoped, at least not initially. Some girls in her class pointed and laughed at her, showing no interest in
befriending the new girl. Feeling so different from everyone else, Rosa wished she could be back home with her
family.
During a lunch break, as Rosa sat alone in the corner of the playground, thinking how to escape back to
Tehran, a young girl named Emily approached her. She introduced herself, shared her milkshake with Rosa, and
said, “I think your scarf looks cool.” In return for her kindness, Rosa took out four biscuits from her pocket and
shared them with Emily. Soon the two were lost in games, running about in the corner of the playground. They
exchanged stories-Rosa told Emily all about life in Tehran, and Emily told Rosa about all of the cool things she
could do in London.

I flew through the back door, excitedly announcing to my mom, “Mom, I’ve been nominated (提名) for the
National Junior Honor Society!” My mother smiled with pride and replied, “I’m so proud of you, honey.”
Together in the family room, I began filling out the application for the Honor Society. It required proof of
possessing all the necessary candidate characteristics. The following day, I submitted the paperwork to my advisor
and didn’t give it much further thought.
Months passed, and one afternoon, as soon as I stepped off the bus, I rushed home with a letter from the
school regarding the Honor Society. “Mom,” I said, handing her the letter with tears welling up in my eyes, “I
didn’t make it. They didn’t choose me.” My mother hugged me and said, “Oh, honey, I’m sorry. There must have
been some kind of mistake.”
That night at dinner, I said sadly, “It’s not fair.” My mother agreed and then shared a story about her high
school friend who was intelligent and kind-hearted but never made the National Honor Society. Despite his hurt
and anger, he became a world-renowned lung cancer specialist, saving lives every day.
I grasped my mom’s message: not being part of the Honor Society wouldn’t define my future, but it was
certainly painful in the moment. However, seeing most of my friends get selected made those weeks especially
tough for me. I opened up to my parents about how difficult it was and declared, “This shouldn’t happen to anyone
else.” We brainstormed ways to improve the selection process and arranged a meeting with the school principal (校

As the only child of my parents, the latest fashions were always in reach for me. I liked having the latest
clothes and a particular look. Sometimes I felt I wouldn’t be accepted unless I could create the right image with the
latest clothes and shoes.
I would go shopping all the time. As time went by, however, the things I wanted were getting more
expensive and my mother’s answer was no longer “yes” to everything.
One day I asked my mother for a little extra money to go shopping. After giving me a long speech about not
spending too much on clothes, she decided to give me a credit card so that I could learn to handle money like an
adult. It sounded like a great idea to me: I wouldn’t have to ask her for money all the time. I’d be free.
A few days later, she handed me the card and sat me down to talk about my spending limit. “Don’t go crazy
buying everything you see. I’m paying that bill every month—remember that. Your limit is $ 150 every month.
Think you can handle that?” she said.
“I can handle it, you’ll see,” I said, already thinking about the first thing I was going to buy.
For the first two months, I only used the card to buy small things—a shirt here and there and treating my
friends to a meal. Once I got used to having the card, I started going shopping every week, always managing to find
something I wanted but didn’t need.
So far, I wasn’t going over my limit and there were no complaints from my mother. But one day, I saw a pair
of UGG boots I wanted that cost $250. They were very popular, and seeing others with them made me want them
more.
At that moment, nothing could stop me from getting them, not even the bill or what my mother would say
about it. I bought them even though they were way over my limit.
