The red-crowned crane (丹顶鹤) is a national first-class protected wildlife. However, due to environmental
and ecological damage, the number of red-crowned cranes had been dangerously declining when Zhao Shiwei
joined the Zhaoquan River Management Station in1992. Artificial breeding (繁殖) of red-crowned cranes became
an important part of Zhao’s work.
3 red-crowned crane birds hatched at the station through his artificial program in 1996. But despite tasting
success, Zhao and his team encountered hardships the following year. In1997, not a single red-crowned crane bird
hatched. And in 1998, only one red-crowned crane chick hatched through artificial breeding, but it died soon after.
In 1999, the station rescued 7 injured red-crowned cranes from the wild, which brought a crucial ray of hope
for the program. That drove Zhao and his colleagues to check temperature control devices, go through a huge
amount of data, and seek advice from experts, hoping to achieve a breakthrough in artificial breeding. They tried
every possible method, even consulting technicians from nearby chicken farms. Finally, the artificial breeding
program improved a lot. Later, a record of 85 red-crowned crane birds hatched at the station through a combination
of artificial and natural breeding methods. Over the past 30 years, Zhao has always been personally involved in the
hatching process. “This part is the most crucial; there cannot be the slightest error,” he said.
Later, Zhao realized that with the number of artificially bred red-crowned cranes increasing, the bond
between the cranes and humans was growing stronger. “But they are the spirits of nature and hence should return to
nature,” Zhao said. Therefore, Zhao provided outdoor training to artificially bred red-crowned cranes in the reserve
in order to increase the number of wild red- crowned cranes. Up to now, Zhao and his team have bred and releasedmore than 200 red-crowned cranes after ensuring they will be able to survive in nature.
24.What does the author imply about the red-crowned cranes in the first two paragraphs?
A.They face the danger of extinction.
B.They top all other wildlife in value.
C.Their artificial breeding started in 1992.
D.Their number stopped declining in 1996.
25.What was the turning point in the artificial breeding program?
A.Rescuing 7 wild cranes. B.Hiring some wildlife experts.
C.Raising sufficient funds. D.Purchasing advanced devices.
26.Why did Zhao train cranes outdoors?
A.To give tourists chances to admire cranes.
B.To improve cranes’ survival skills in the wild.
C.To increase the number of artificially-bred cranes.
D.To strengthen the bond between cranes and humans.
27.What can we learn from Zhao’s work?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Well begun is half done.

Smart entertainment is changing how we engage with leisure. By combining cutting-edge technologies like
artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality, and the internet of things with traditional forms of entertainment, this
innovation is enhancing user experiences.
In 2023, Huawei introduced its Vision Smart TV 3, transforming your home into your own amusement park. This
innovative technology features groundbreaking AI super-sensing cameras and AI vision chips powered by deep
learning and big data. These advanced components see and study your movements, enabling you to control
characters through your body gestures. Social media is busy with users sharing their experiences of playing motion-
sensing games, which require real-life movements like jumping and squatting (蹲) instead of simply holding a
controller. The Vision Smart TV is not only cutting-edge but also family-friendly. Turning on the kids mode
allows the screen to monitor real-time data, offering suggestions for adjusting a child’s viewing distance and
posture. This provides a safe and comfortable entertainment experience for the younger audience. TorieZ, a Huawei
Vision Smart TV 3 owner and a mother of a 3-year-old daughter, shared her experience on Xiaohongshu. “Thanksto the smart screen, my child maintains good posture without constant supervision because her favorite cartoons
stop if she slouches (懒洋洋地坐),” she said. When she’s free, TorieZ and her husband enjoy exercising together
under the instructions of the TV.
We can not only play video games merely on the screens; now, with smart entertainment, you can get an
immersive experience of Mario Kart, a racing video game, put right into your living room.
While playing the game, players can control their karts running in their living rooms. Each kart has an
onboard camera on it. The camera can record the layout of where they are and upload it to the Nintendo system.
After processing it, some settings, like jungles and snowy landscapes, are created based on the layout and shown on
the Switch screen. So things in your living room, like the sofa and table, your feet or even your cat, can be a part of
your game.
Step outside and you can also enjoy smart entertainment experiences. Shanghai Disney Resort uses big data
analysis to offer personalized services. In the US and South America, VR World, the largest VR club, gives users
superreal gaming and travel adventures.

DIn the age-old debate of cats vs. dogs, score one for cats. A recent study finds that cats are more into fetching
than we ever imagined, narrowing the gap between these two beloved pets in terms of interactive play.
The researchers analyzed data from over 80, 000 pet owners to uncover the secrets of fetching behavior.
They found that up to 40. 9% of cats played fetch with their owners, a figure far higher than previously thought.
Meanwhile, 77. 8% of dogs exhibited fetching behavior, confirming our long- held beliefs about dogs’ playfulness.
In this study, researchers defined fetching as getting back the thrown objects or toys. For cats, this often
involves carrying small objects or toys in their mouths and bringing them to their owners. Dogs, on the other hand,
are more likely to run after sticks, balls, or other objects thrown by their human companions. The study’s findings
challenge the common belief that cats are uninterested in interactive play with their owners. In fact, nearly 40% of
cats reportedly initiated play by bringing toys to their owners. This suggests that many cats are not only capable of
fetching but actively seek out this form of engagement with their owners.
Interestingly, the research uncovered some surprising factors that influenced fetching behavior in both
species. For example, female cats and dogs were less likely to fetch than their male partners. Age also played a role,
with older pets of both species showing a decreased likelihood of engaging in fetching behavior. Health issues were
another factor that reduced the chances of fetching in both cats and dogs. Environmental factors also came into
play. Cats kept exclusively indoors were more likely to fetch, possibly due to increased opportunities for interactive
play with their owners. Surprisingly, both cats and dogs living in households with other dogs were less likely to
engage in fetching behavior.
This research highlights the wonderful diversity of pet personalities. It’s a call to appreciate the unique
qualities of each animal.
32.How did the researchers feel about the research result on dogs’ fetching behavior?
A.Unexpected. B.Doubtful. C.Normal. D.Contradictory.
33.What’s people’s conventional impression on cats?
A.They tend to play with dogs by fetching objects.
B.They expect their owners to join in playing fetch.
C.They learn from dogs to bring objects to humans.
D.They lack the passion to interact with their owners.
34.Which factor decreases the likelihood of fetching in both cats and dogs?
A.Being male. B.Being so young.
C.Being kept indoors. D.Living with other dogs.35.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Cats Love Playing Fetch Alone B.The Playful Side of Cats Revealed
C.Fetching Behavior: Cats vs. Dogs D.Interactive Play: Cats Beating Dogs

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day in February 2016, when my friend, Austin, invited me to hike the Ka’au Crater Trail in Honolulu, I
jumped at the chance. Together with four of his friends, Jack, Dan, Carson and Mali, we were excited to check out
the challenging track. We’d see three waterfalls, and a volcanic crater.
Stretching over eight kilometers, there were no steps on the track—just muddy paths formed on the rock face
by other hikers. Climbing upstream, the journey was not for the faint-hearted (胆小的). We had to climb through
thick roots and overgrown vegetation. But I knew the view from the top would be incredible. Finally, after an hour
and a half, we stopped for our final rest before the peak.
“I’m going to check it out!” Austin said. “I’ll join you,” I replied, eager to see the top.
Racing up the last stretch, I felt excited as I walked over to the edge of the final waterfall where I turned my
camera on. When I moved closer to the edge to get a better look, my foot suddenly gave way on a wet rock, sending
me falling feet-first over the edge.
I desperately reached out to hang on to any rocks but I couldn’t get one as I fell to the bottom 15 meters
below, scraping (刮) against rocks as I went.
As I fell, it felt like time stood still. “Was I going to be badly hurt?” I thought.
In a moment of clarity (清醒) before I reached the bottom, I twisted my body to the side and tucked (蜷缩)
myself in a ball. It was a position I’d learned in volleyball training, aimed at reducing the impact of a fall. Landing
in the water with a huge splash, after around 20 seconds I managed to lift my head out, but struggled to breath and I
could taste blood.
“I’ve got to get myself out,” I realized, walking out to reach the edge of the pool as my visions became
unclear. Holding the rocks tightly, I felt pain tore through my body and blood flowed from deep wounds on my left
arm and left bottom.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Moments later, Austin arrived and raced down the track.
