About a mile behind our house lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of
trees to throw stones over the water there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place.
One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”
The ice looked thick. No water showed through it, but I felt uncertain about it.
“Go ahead,” Harry said. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. You go first. If the ice holds, we can run and slide on
it. It’ll be fun.”
I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to take steps across the
pond. In the middle of the pond, the ice cracked. I threw out my arms. The next thing I knew was hanging on to the
edge of a hole in the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew
it would be black and awful down there. I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke
like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke. The hole widened. As my coat
became wet, it pulled me down. I grew tired of trying to get out and rested my arms on the ice.
I looked at Harry on the shore. He just stood there. “I can’t get out! Help me!” I screamed when I caught some
breath.

competition which was aimed to draw excellent dancers from all over the country. It was a prestigious (负有盛名
的) event, and Marie knew that if she wanted to make a name for herself in the world of ballet, this was her chance.
She spent every waking moment practicing, determined to give it her all on the big day.
When the day of the competition arrived, Marie was nervous but excited. She had trained hard for this moment
for years and felt confident in her well-prepared dancing. As she walked onto the stage, the bright lights blinded her
momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure and began to dance.
The music swirled around her as she moved gracefully across the stage. Her movements were fluid and
precise, each step perfectly executed. The audience watched in awe as Marie danced, completely lost in the
moment.
But then, it happened. During a particularly difficult jump, Marie landed awkwardly on her ankle and felt a
sharp pain shoot up her leg. She tried to ignore it and continue dancing, but the pain was too much. She fell to the
floor, clutching her leg in agony.
Paramedics rushed onto the stage to tend to her, and Marie was taken to the hospital. The diagnosis was
devastating: she had torn several ligaments (韧带) in her ankle and would need extensive surgery to repair the
damage. Marie was held by desperate shock. She had worked so hard to get where she was, and now it seemed like
all of her dreams were slipping away. For weeks, Marie was confined to a wheelchair, unable to move without
assistance. She felt helpless and alone, wondering if she would ever be able to dance again.

43. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I sank down in my canvas(帆布)camp chair at the end of the driveway, our new house standing behind me. A
folding table with snacks and drinks sat a few feet away. What if no one shows? Upstate New York was quite
different from my native South America. In Cap Town, where I grew up, our whole neighborhood would spill
outside in the evenings to socialize. There were no fences, no sense of where one family’s yard ended and another’s
began. People set out long tables. My father grilled fish, enough to share. A neighbor offered biltong and biscuits.
Mom handed out juice boxes, and all of us kids grabbed for our favorite flavor, lychee, a sweet tropical fruit.
Maybe people here thought it was strange for us to throw our own welcome party. I stared at the two sloping(倾斜
的)sections of the corn hole game I’d set up. The whole thing suddenly felt embarrassing. How long should I sit
here, I wondered, before packing up?
The idea had come to me the day we moved in, literally as we drove down our new street a month earlier, in
June 2021. With each basketball hoop and swing set we passed, my excitement grew. Families! I could picture us
all hanging out together. At last, a real community, something I’d been searching for since moving to the United
States after law school! “Let’s invite the neighbors to a get-to-know-you party! ”I announced to my wife, Sarah,
and our 11-vear-old twins, Olivia and Holly.
A week earlier, Sarah had designed the invitations: Hello! We’re new to the neighborhood. The Sprout Family.
We’d love to meet you. Monday, July 5, anytime between 6 pm and 8 pm. We’d like to keep it simple, so no RSVP.
She and the girls had gone house to house, putting an invitation in each of the 12 mailboxes. But we hadn’t heard a
word since. Wouldn’t at least one family have told us they were coming? I checked my watch. 6:10 pm. Maybe I’d
misjudged. Maybe this was a keep-to-yourself kind of neighborhood.

41. Harry turned and ran from the pond. As I looked at his back, I wondered: Is he running for help, or is he
running away and leaving me to fall to the bottom? I was surprised to see him pick up a large, fallen tree limb. It
was V-shaped. He ran with it toward the pond. At the edge, he fell to his stomach, pushed the limb out in front of
him, and moved slowly toward me. When a thin top branch was within reach, I took hold of it. It didn’t break.
Hand over hand, I pulled myself from the hole. I began to stand. I wanted to run from the pond as fast as I
could. Harry shouted, “Get down! Stay flat on the ice or it’ll break again.” I did as he told me. Harry moved slowly
backward towards the shore, pulling the limb. I hung on to a branch and moved slowly towards the shore on my
stomach. Once out of the pond, I cried with anger. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have let you go first,” Harry said. It did
change him, because since then he’s always gone first whenever we’ve tried something.
42. One day, she heard a knock on her hospital room door and in came Jenny, her toughest opponent in the
dance competition. Marie was surprised and a little skeptical of why Jenny would want to visit her. After all, they
had been fierce competitors just days earlier and didn’t really know each other outside of the competition. Jenny
gently walked close and sat by Marie, explaining that as a fellow dancer, she understood the pain and suffering, and
just wanted to offer support to Marie during this challenging time. Since then, Jenny continued to visit Marie at the
hospital regularly, bringing her flowers and gifts to lift her spirits. Every time Marie felt depressed, Jenny would
offer words of encouragement and support.
Slowly, she felt more open to accepting Jenny’s help and support. Jenny even went with Marie to physical
therapy sessions, supporting her as she worked through the painful exercises and stretches. She would hold her
hand and cheer her on, reminding her that each small step was getting her closer to achieving her goals. As Marie
slowly started to regain her strength and mobility, Jenny became an integral part of her recovery process. And their
friendship continued to grow stronger as they supported each other through the ups and downs of their journey.
43. Another 10 minutes dragged by. I was about to give up and start packing up the snacks and chairs when I saw
a family walking towards me. They had a bottle of wine in their hands and a smile on their faces. “Hi, we’re the
Johnsons from two doors down. We saw your invitation and thought it was such a lovely idea,” the woman said.
My heart leaped with joy. We chatted for a while, and soon, another family joined in. Slowly but surely, more and
more families arrived.“This is such a great idea,” I overheard someone say. It was the end of the evening, and most of the families
had gone home. A few of us stayed behind to clean up and chat a little longer. “I’ve been living here for five years,
and this is the first time I’ve seen so many of my neighbors together,” another person said. It warmed my heart to
hear this. I realized that sometimes, all it takes is a little initiative to bring people together. As we said our
goodbyes, I knew that we had made some new friends and that this was just the beginning.
