A. There were few trees on the Easter Island?
B. People have shown too much interest in the natives’ history.
C. Most of the Polynesians on the Island have lost their identity.
【答案】C
W:The world is full of wonderful places, both natural and man-made. Easter Island lies in the southern Pacific
Ocean, 3,512 kilometers west of mainland Chile. Jacob Roggeveen discovered the island on Easter Sunday in 1722
and called it Easter Island. In 1786, a Frenchman visited the island and then made a detailed map. In 1888, Chile
took control of the island.
The most amazing sight on the island is the giant stone figures. One mystery about these figures is how the ancient
inhabitants made and then moved them. As we all know, what they used were the simplest stone tools. It seems that
lots of people pulled. Over the centuries, Easter Island has suffered from diseases, wars and climate changes. As a
result, most of the native Polynesian identity has been lost. But the island’s stone figures will keep people extremelyinterested in Polynesian history and culture for a long time.

文章JACKSON’S PAINTING PRIZE段讲到“Winners will not only win a cash prize every
year, but their works will also be granted more invaluable global exposure, such as a marketing package in the
Directory of Painting, a feature in a major exhibition in central London, and an invitation to the Awards Evening in
March.
文章WATERMEDIA SHOWCASE段讲到“Entry Fee: 30 before February 6,2024)(入场费:
文章JACKSON’S PAINTING PRIZE段讲到“Winners will not only win a cash prize everyyear, but their works will also be granted more invaluable global exposure, such as a marketing package in the
Directory of Painting, a feature in a major exhibition in central London, and an invitation to the Awards Evening in

A。
B
I was living with my grandparents at the time. Our grandparents had recently retired. While they’d managed to
save enough to buy a home, they were short on living expenses.
So, our grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school building. Keeping the entire building clean
was a stressful job for one man. Realizing this, I began helping him after school, sweeping rooms and emptying
waste baskets, for a small wage.
When winter arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace (火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become
for him to shovel (铲) the huge pile of coal chips required to fill in the furnace. I volunteered to take on that job, a
commitment that required me to set my alarm clock an hour earlier each morning. I’d go over to the school, and
shovel a half ton of coal, enough to keep the fire burning for 24 hours. After finishing that task, I’d go home,
change clothes, and eat breakfast. Then I’d head back to school, always at the last minute.
It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower. On two mornings, at the very
instant I stepped onto the sidewalk in front of the school, the first bell rang. That was the signal for students to head
to class. This astonishing coincidence caused me to improve my precision. I carefully planned each phase of my
morning activity. I paced myself. Often I’d step onto the school’s sidewalk just as the first bell rang. This
accomplishment gave me enormous pride — and some strange feelings.
Decades later, at a school reunion, I happened to meet Harold Spiry, who had been in charge of ringing the bell
by pressing a button in his office. I couldn’t resist boasting (吹嘘). I told Mr. Spiry about how well I had orderedmy complex morning work back then, how my timing had been faultless. “Oh that,” he said. “Do you recall that my
office windows looked out over the front of the building? I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk,
I’d ring the bell.”
24. What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. Grandparents’ lack of living expenses.
B. Granddad’s retiring as a doorkeeper.
C. Grandparents’ saving money to buy a house.
D. Granddad’s hardships in cleaning the whole building.
25. Why did the author get up earlier every morning?
A. To avoid being late for school. B. To help his granddad clean classrooms.
C. To fill coal into the school’s furnace.D. To volunteer to empty waste baskets.
26. What talent did the author find about himself?
A. He had the ability to be on time. B. He was good at morning activities.
C. He could do things at his own pace. D. He could fire up the furnace alone.
27. How would the author feel after hearing what Harold Spiry said?
A. Proud.B. Regretful. C. Cautious. D. Surprised.
D 25. C 26. A 27. D
根据第二段画线词前面的“our grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school
building. Keeping the entire building clean was a stressful job for one man.(我们的祖父做了一份Java学校大楼
根据第三段中“When winter arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace (火炉). He quickly
realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel (铲) the huge pile of coal chips required to fill in the furnace.
I volunteered to take on that job, a commitment that required me to set my alarm clock an hour earlier each
根据第四段中“On two mornings, at the very instant I stepped onto the sidewalk in front of theschool, the first bell rang.(有两个早晨,就在我踏上学校门前人行道的那一刻,第一声铃响了)”和“This
astonishing coincidence caused me to improve my precision. I carefully planned each phase of my morning
activity. I paced myself. Often I’d step onto the school’s sidewalk just as the first bell rang.(这个惊人的巧合使我
C
Jennifer DeStefano answered a call from a number she did not recognize. “Mom, I messed up,” her daughter’s
voice told her, crying. “These bad men have me.” A man went on to demand money, or he would drug her daughter
and leave her in Mexico. But while she kept him on the phone, friends managed to reach her daughter, only to
discover that she was, in fact, free and well on a skiing trip in Arizona.
The voice used on the phone was a fake. Voice cloning’s influences will be huge. For several years, customers
have been able to identify themselves over the phone to their bank and other companies using their voice. Not even
a gifted mimic (巧于模仿的人) could fool the detection system. But the arrival of cloning will force adaptation in
order to prevent cheating.
Creative industries could face the impact too. Voice actors’ skills, trained over a lifetime, can be copied in
seconds. But some actors may, in fact, find cloning congenial. Val Kilmer, who has lost much of his voice to throat
cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Another industry that will have to come to cope with the rise of clones is journalism. Now who will trust a
story based on an audio clip (片段)? Slightly easier to manage might be the false positives: recordings claiming to
be someone but which are fakes. The opposite problem — the false negatives — will appear when public figures
deny real recordings. Proving that a clip is genuine is bard, perhaps even impossible. Journalists will need to show
how they obtained and stored audio files.
The term “fake news” had existed long before voice cloning. Now, ever more people caught in a crime are
likely to defend themselves. “It wasn’t me.” And many people will have even more reason to believe them.
28. What does Jennifer DeStefano’s experience suggest?
A. The high frequency of fake news. B. The rising crime rate in Mexico.
C. The danger of voice-cloning technology. D. The value of bravery in an emergency.
29. What does the underlined word “congenial” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. illegalB. embarrassing C. striking D. agreeable30. Which of the following belongs to the false negatives?
A. Late Beetles’ songs have been restored by voice cloning.
B. A pop star claims a real recording untrue.
C. Journalists prove their reports with audio clips.
D. The police identify a criminal through voice.
31. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Voice cloning is impacting different aspects of our life
B. Voice cloning is challenging our traditional ideas
C. Voice cloning is increasingly used in journalism
D. Voice cloning is re-establishing life styles for the better
C 29. D 30. B 31. A
Jennifer DeStefano answered a call from a number she did not recognize. “Mom,
I messed up,” her daughter’s voice told her, crying. “These bad men have me.” A man went on to demand money,
or he would drug her daughter and leave her in Mexico. But while she kept him on the phone, friends managed to
reach her daughter, only to discover that she was, in fact, free and well on a skiing trip in Arizona. The voice used
on the phone was a fake.
But some actors may, in fact, find cloning congenial. Val Kilmer, who has lost
much of his voice to throat cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for “Top Gun: Maverick”.
(agreeable)”。故选D。
Another industry that will have to come to cope with the rise of clones is
journalism. Now who will trust a story based on an audio clip (片段)? Slightly easier to manage might be the false
positives: recordings claiming to be someone but which are fakes. The opposite problem — the false negatives —
will appear when public figures deny real recordings.
ll be huge. For several years, customers have been able to identify themselves over the phone to their bank and
other companies using their voice. Not even a gifted mimic (巧于模仿的人) could fool the detection system. But
the arrival of cloning will force adaptation in order to prevent cheating.
二段“Voice cloning’s influences will be huge.
故选A。
D
The amount of adult speech children is exposed to in their early years may help to shape the structure of their
brains, researchers say.
Studies have previously suggested there are benefits to talking to young children, with research suggesting it
can help improve their language processing and boost their vocabularies.
Now researchers say they have found a relationship between the amount of adult speech children are exposed
to and the concentration of a substance in the brain — known as myelin (健磷脂) — that surrounds nerves and
makes signals more efficient.
“I think the take-home message is, absolutely talk to your kids. And it matters.” said the lead author, Prof John
Spencer of the University of East Anglia. “What’s pretty striking here is that it’s literally shaping the structure of
the brain.”
Writing in The Journal of Neuroscience, Spencer and colleagues describe how they used a device fitted inside
a vest to record the amount of speech 87 children aged about six months and76 aged about 30 months were exposed
to at home. The team recorded 6.203 hours of language data, finding that children with more highly educated
mothers were exposed to greater amounts of adult speech, and themselves produced more vocalizations (发声).
The team then invited 84 of the children into hospital, where they fell asleep in a special quiet room. Once the
kids were asleep, they were transported into the MRI scanning room. The team then used the MRI scans to measure
the amount of myelin in the children’s brains. As the brain develops, myelin increases. However, the team found, for the 30-month-olds, larger amounts of adult speech were associated with higher quantiles of myelin in lang----
related pathways in the brain. By contrast, for six-month-olds, greater amounts of adult speech were associated with
lower concentrations of myelin. While the Lurter was unexpected. Spencer said one possible explanation is that the
impact of speech depends upon the brains stage of development.
Spencer said more research was now needed adding it was not yet clear how strongly the team’s results were
linked to outcomes in children.

Diving made my world bigger. ____36___ It took me three years and three tries to get certified, but I’m glad I
persisted.
Learning to dive is a lot like learning to drive a car: You study the theory, practice with an instructor, and
become qualified. From there, proficiency (熟练) depends on how often you dive, further training, and your own
self-reliance. Regardless of your goals, diving is more accessible and wondrous than I ever imagined. ____37___
But not everyone wants to or can dive, and that’s fair enough. Whether you’re a snorkeler (潜水员), surfer, or
sailor or you simply enjoy dipping your toes into the sea while on holiday, you can still be aware of the life
unfolding under that glittering blue cover and help protect it.
____38___ Experts urge that at least 30 percent be protected to safeguard marine ecosystems, which in turn
will help protect our health and well-being. The ocean supplies more than half our oxygen, absorbs carbon dioxide,
regulates our climate, and supports much of the world’s economy. We need it a lot more than it needs us.
Take Florida, for example, it’s bordered by North America’s only living coral barrier reef (礁石) and the third
largest in the world. ____39___ It is also essential to its economy, generating an estimated $1.1 billion annually in
tourism. The reef protects the coastline, too, since healthy coral reefs absorb 97 percent of a wave’s energy.
A study has found that 70 percent of Florida’s coral reefs are experiencing a net loss of reef habitat. Exactly
facing these concerns is what I mean by seeing the sea — the good, the bad, the important. ____40___ We can use
it to inform our choices, from traveling more carefully, to examining how we run our businesses. No one can do
everything, but everyone can do something. The ocean is a remarkable teacher, and it’s never too late to start
learning.A. Knowledge is power.
B. I didn’t take to diving immediately.
C. So I’d encourage anyone to give it a try.
D. Adventure sometimes involves pushing limits.
E. Marine life needs a safe ecological environment.
F. The reef is home to more than 500 species of fish.
G. Right now, less than 3 percent of the ocean is considered highly protected.
B 2. C 3. G 4. F 5. A
36. 下文“It took me three years and three tries to get certified, but I’m glad I persisted.(我花了三年时间,尝试
项“I didn’t take to diving immediately.(我并不是立马就开始潜水的。)”
37. 作者在上文“Regardless of your goals, diving is more accessible and wondrous than I ever imagined.(不管你
encourage anyone to give it a try.(所以我鼓励大家去尝试一下。)”
38. 下文“Experts urge that at least 30 percent be protected to safeguard marine ecosystems(专家敦促至少要保
护30%的海洋生态系统)”提出专家对海洋生态系统保护的期望值,与G项“Right now, less than 3 percent of
the ocean is considered highly protected.(目前,只有不到3%的海洋被认为是高度保护的。)”
“less than 3 percent”和“at least 30 percent”相照应。故选G项。
39. 上文“Take Florida, for example, it’s bordered by North America’s only living coral barrier reef (礁石) and
the third largest in the world.
F项“The reef is home to more than 500 species of fish.(这些珊瑚礁是
It is also essential to its
economy, generating an estimated $1.1 billion annually in tourism.(它对其经济也至关重要,每年产生约 11亿
We can use it to inform our choices, from traveling more carefully, to examining how
可推知,设空句中会出现指示代词“it”的指代对象,结合上文“A study has found that 70 percent ofFlorida’s coral reefs are experiencing a net loss of reef habitat.(一项研究发现,佛罗里达州70%的珊瑚礁正在经
故选A
项。

56. and 57. was listed 58. to 59. preserved 60. where 61. finest 62. is 63. articles 64. providing
65. fully
The tomb of the Ming
Emperor Zhu Di 和the tombs of the other 12 emperors是并列关系,是并列的主语,应用并列连词and连接。
故填and。
故填was listed。
固定短语:be open to… 故填
to。
故填where。

故填is。

better myself, I shall make check lists and to-do lists. In this way I can concentrate better.
Hopefully, I can be better than I have ever been.
For as long as I can remember, I have spent every Sunday afternoon until I was a teen, around the table at
Grandma’s house. As soon as Grandma and I would return from Sunday Morning Mass at St Joseph’s Parish,
Grandma got started on the meatball.
Ever since I was just two years old, Grandma would always allow me, her only granddaughter, at the time, to
sneak(偷吃) a meatball before dinner was served. There was something about that snuck meatball. For some reson,
it tasted so much better than the one she placed beside my macaroni(通心粉),once we all sat down. My Italian
Gramma had a way of keeping an eye on all of her meatballs, to make sure no one snuck a meatball but me, who
she gave that special VIP sneak. How did she do it? Well, she would make my “before dinner meatball” slightly
bigger than the rest.
The meatball stealing games was all fun until Jeanine came along. Allow me to introduce you to my sister Jeanine,
my Gramma’s second granddaughter, born five years after me, just three years after I fell in love with Gramma’s yummy
meatballs.
My younger sister Jeanine was quite the fussy(爱挑剔的) eater. She did not care that her gramma made the
world’s best meatballs, or that our mama made almost as yummy meatballs as her mother did. All Jeanine Bean cared
about was being done with dinner as fast as possible ao she can go back to playing, and so she can get her evening sanck,
cocoa and popcorn. Jeanine knew the rules. She knew no snack unless you finish your dinner at least 90 percent. Jeanine
was not giving up her favourite sanck. She knew she had to develop a plan! She did indeed!
注意:

So, one day when she was given a meatball on her plate, she stole that meatball. She stole it right ff her dinner
plate. Gowever, rather than making its way to her eight-year-old mouth, it found its way in her bedroom closet!
Yes, you heard me right! My little sister hid that meatball and put it in her bedroom closet, so she can pass herself
off as finishing her dinner and can be free to go play, and then afterwards be rewarded hot cocoa and popcorn later
evening for finishing her dinner.
One day my mother noticed that something smelt funny in our closet. My curious mother followed her nose to the
back of our clothes closet. Sure enough, there were about 4 weeks of our family dinner meatballs hidden behind all of
our summer jelly shoes! Seeing these, Mum immediately understood her trick. What was the cost of making Mum
angry? No sancks for a week. However, I would say nothing was going to stand in the way of Jeanine and her favourite
sanck! Who knew if she had another plan.
