(2025·江苏南通·一模)As the first African American woman to receive a medical degree in America, Dr.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler challenged the prejudice that prevented African Americans and women from following medical
careers.
Born in 1831 in Christiana, Delaware, Crumpler spent her childhood in Pennsylvania with an aunt, who
frequently cared for sick neighbors, and Crumpler went with her on these trips. In her book published in 1883,
Crumpler wrote, “Having been raised by a kind aunt, whose usefulness to the sick was continually sought, I early
developed a liking for medicine, and sought every opportunity to be in a position to relieve the sufferings of
others.”
In 1852, Crumpler moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts, to begin her medical career as a nurse. In the early
1850s, there was no formal school where one could become licensed to practice nursing. Even so, Crumpler assisted
several doctors in Boston for eight years. They in turn supported her application to the New England Female Medical
College, where she was awarded a state- funded scholarship.
Crumpler worked hard at her studies but had to take a leave of absence after two years to attend to her sick
husband, who unfortunately passed away in 1863. Months later, Crumpler returned to complete her final term but
was nearly refused after some faculty members (教员) expressed worry regarding the amount of time it was taking
her to complete her coursework and were hesitant to let her come back. Luckily, with several of the school’s sponsors
supporting her, Crumpler finally received a “Doctress of Medicine” from college, and began seeing patients in and
around her house, treating them regardless of their ability to pay.
In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published a book based on journal notes she kept during her years of practice. A Book
of Medical Discourses, specifically aimed at women and the care of their children, is believed to be the first medical
text written by an African American author. Scientific American describes it as the forerunner of the famous What
to Expect When You’ re Expecting (1984).
24.What inspired Crumpler to take up medicine?
A.The influence of her aunt. B.The desire to help the poor.
C.Her family’s encouragement. D.The doctors’ financial support.
25.Which of the following can best describe Crumpler?
A.Humorous and easygoing. B.Caring and determined.
C.Adventurous and sensitive. D.Optimistic and honest.
26.Why did some teachers attempt to reject Crumpler’s returning to school?
A.Her family couldn’t afford her education. B.She failed to follow the school regulations.
C.They felt negative about her determination. D.They doubted her ability to finish her study.
27.What do people think of Crumpler’s book according to the last paragraph?A.Inspiring but unrealistic. B.Accessible and interesting.
C.Educational but complicated. D.Groundbreaking and practical.

(2024·江苏盐城·模拟预测)The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are
less showy, a dusty yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of Central
America, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate
change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known
as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge. According to a study published in early March in
the journal PNAS, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动物) and their food sources, which is
happening across North America, could have serious consequences for migratory birds’ survival. “In discussing
climate change, we often focus on warming,” says Scott Loss, a co-author of the study. “But the length and timing of
seasons — like when winter ends and spring begins — are some of the most dramatic effects of climate change.”
Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average start of spring
green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, then compared that timing with the
current green-up. They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes. “By contrary,
previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist
at UCLA, “but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might
be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).”
“Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats,” Loss says. “This adds to the knowledge
about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the
urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. “It’s really important, if we can’t address climate
change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”
28.What may pose a direct threat to western tanagers’ survival?
A.Global warming. B.The duration of changing seasons.
C.Loss of habitats due to human activities.D.Decreased access to foods during migration.
29.What is unique about the new study on birds like western tanagers?
A.It covers a wider geographic range. B.It reveals the decline in bird populations.
C.It centers on the adaptation of bird species. D.It ensures the existence of a timing mismatch.
30.What does Loss suggest we do to safeguard migratory birds?
A.Lessen the effects of climate change. B.Preserve ecosystems for bird species.
C.Address emissions and habitat loss. D.Expand researches on threats to birds.
31.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A scientific journal. B.A bird-watching guidebook.
C.A website about climate change. D.A magazine about wildlife conservation.D

It is perhaps easy to accept the statement that the universe is expanding. It is just some strange physics indicating
that, as time goes on, galaxies (星系) get further away from each other just like two cars racing away from each
other.
I personally don’t like it and prefer the balloon analogy. In this situation, there are dots all over a balloon.
When we blow it up in real life, the dots would increase in size. In this analogy, let’s assume they don’t. What we are
interested in is how the distance between the dots on the surface of the balloon grows as we put more air into it.
The balloon analogy relies somewhat on our geometric sensibilities which refer to our sense of shapes and
how they change over time. At its core, what we are trying to develop a sense for is how we measure distances.
This concept is also the fundamental goal of general relativity, Einstein’s theory of gravity. In general relativity, the
most important piece of information is what we call the metric, an equation that describes how distances are measured,
and therefore also tells us about the shape space-time is taking.
The whole idea that space-time is expanding was first noticed as a mathematical consequence of general
relativity by Georges Lemaitre in 1927, when he solved Einstein’s equation and found a solution for the metric
showing that distances grow with time. His work provided a theoretical explanation:the standard for measuring
cosmic (宇宙的) distance was itself changing with time.
What is delightful is that it means we can quite reasonably say that universe’s expansion is a gravitational
effect. I enjoy this because it is so deeply counterintuitive to our usual understanding of gravity, which teaches us
that it is a force that always draws things together. But in this case where gravity is a geometric effect, we are offered a
broader range of gravitational possibilities.
It is worth noting that the geometric explanation of general relativity hasn’t been universally popular. The late
physicist Steven Weinberg wrote that the geometric explanation of the theory of gravitation has been reduced to a
mere analogy, but is otherwise not very useful. Another challenge with the balloon analogy and our reliance on
geometric explanation is to explain why gravity seems to pull things together in many situations, while universe is
expanding. This difference is resolved by acknowledging that local gravitational effects due to massive objects
dominate over large-scale expansion effects, leading to the formation of structures like stars, galaxies and, eventually
us.
In fact, the analogy where universe is only expanding and this is the only gravitational effect at play is a very
idealized situation where matter was initially spread out perfectly evenly across the universe.
32.The author presents the balloon analogy in Paragraph 2 mainly to .
A.introduce a topic B.draw a comparisonC.confirm a theory D.evaluate a statement
33.What does the underlined word “counterintuitive” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Unchallenging.B.Contradictory. C.Satisfying. D.Relevant.
34.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Universe’s expansion results in the creation of structures like galaxies.
B.Lemaitre’s work suggests the standard for cosmic distance is consistent.
C.A uniform distribution of matter can overcome the universe’s expansion.
D.The metric is key to sensing the shape of space-time in general relativity.
35.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Studying Galaxies — Has the Balloon Analogy Been Outdated?
B.Rethinking Gravity — Is it a Way to Make Sense of the Balloon Analogy?
C.Arguing against the Car Analogy — Does the Balloon Analogy Win Over?
D.Understanding Universe Expansion — Is the Balloon Analogy Acceptable?

(2025·浙江·模拟预测)Imagine you buy a new shirt and do not intend to buy a new jacket. You were
perfectly happy with it until you wore it with the new shirt. However, you imagine that the new shirt makes the old
jacket look worn. Then you can’t help buy a new jacket or even more to better fit the shirt. 36 The
simplest description of it is the scenario of buying something new and replacing our old possessions with items to
match the new one, even if that means an empty bank account. 37
Become aware it is happening. Observe when you are being drawn into consumption not because you are in
actual need of an item, but only because something new has been introduced.
38 A store may be having a great sale on a new outfit—but if the new outfit forces you to buy a
new pair of shoes or handbag to match, it just became a more expensive purchase than originally assumed.
Avoid unnecessary new purchases. Realize the Diderot Effect is a significant force and overcoming it is very
difficult. You may avoid replacing those end tables at first, but eventually, at some point down the road, you are going
to break down and buy new ones that better match the new couch. 39 But the best way to overcome the
Diderot Effect is to never allow it to overpower you in the first place.
Remind yourself that possessions do not define you. 40 Your possessions do not define you or
your success—no matter what marketers will try to tell you.
A.Analyze and predict the full cost of future purchases.
B.Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status.
C.We actually can employ this mind trick in the following ways.
D.The true abundance of life is not found in the things that you own.
E.Then how can we resist this pattern of unnecessary consumerism?
F.The phenomenon can be owed to the so-called “Diderot Effect”.G.There are times when we have a proper need to buy new things, admittedly.

had 49 our exchange.
Just then, something 50 happened. Our observer spontangeously (自发地) 51 and offered
his seat to another standing man. Instantly, we had 52 a chain reaction: This game of seat-sharing 53

chatting with each other while exchanging positions. Needless to say, the rest of the journey was quite enjoyable.
This extraodinary experience has stayed with me even after all these years. It revealed to me an important fact

In an age of rapidly growing urbanization, rooftop farming has emerged as a sustainable response 56
the challenge of creating green space in cities. This innovative practice transforms rooftops into mini farms, where
vegetables, fruits, and even flowers 57 (plant), providing local residents with fresh produce and adding a
touch of nature to urban environments.
Rooftop farming, also 58 (refer) to as vertical agriculture, is more than just a trend; it’s a step towards
environmental conservation. Green roofs with vegetation help to absorb sunlight and release moisture, cooling the
air and reducing the demand for air conditioning, 59 in turn lessens energy 60 (consume) and carbon
emission. Meanwhile, rooftop farms serve as educational platforms, 61 (teach) city dwellers about sustainable
agriculture practices and the importance of 62 (local) sourced food.
As urban populations continue to grow, rooftop farming fosters community engagement 63 promotes
healthier lifestyles by providing access to fresh and organic produce. When we look towards 64 future where
environmental consciousness and sustainable practices become increasingly vital, rooftop farming stands as a
testament to our ability to cultivate more than just food—we cultivate hope for a 65 (green) and more
resilient (可迅速恢复的) world.

(2024·湖北武汉·三模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I jumped into my mother’s car, shut the door and poured out my recent trouble. “Jenny is playing her mind
games again. Training is less tiring than dealing with her and her feelings,” I complained.
Jenny and I were co-captains of our cross-country team. We’d been training for the coming tournament (锦
标赛) for weeks: stretching, running, and making the seven of us into a team. Jenny, with exceptional running talent,
always had a way to get ahead of her competitors on the course. She also helped all of us run faster and cheered us
on. It seemed that she was anticipating the final show.
However, this week, her attitude shifted. She kept making excuses not to run with the team, from aching legs
to headaches. I had to beg her, telling her repeatedly that the team couldn’t do without her. It went on all day and I
was worn out. What’s her deal?
Mom pulled into our driveway, and turned toward me, “Well, I know a little about Jenny. She and her little
brother have been together in foster care (寄养家庭). So close were they that every time they moved, Jenny would
say that as long as they were together, they had a family.” My heart sank as Mom continued, “Jenny’s stepfather (继
父) came for her brother this week, with gifts, hugs and big plans for their future. But Jenny wasn’t even part of his
big plans.” My chest felt tight. “Poor Jenny, not to have a family.” I was close to tears. My mother patted my knee.
“That’s it, honey. You got it.” And I did.
I decided that I should do something. I proposed that we organize a team gathering before the
tournament. Each member was to write a heartfelt message for every teammate and prepare a special gift for the one
they felt most connected to. I made sure that Jenny would come. It took some persuading, though.
