高考真题演练
2023年6月新高考(写作比赛)
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without
thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing
was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the
Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your
stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed
to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse
at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come
straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I
worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen
books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.”
I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the
enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.注意:

模拟演练
01
阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. It’s a story of how I found the strength to change myself
for better and then how I get rid of my fears to be even better. If anyone is inspired by this, that’s wonderful.
I’d been stuck as this incredibly insecure, underconfident and just scared individual for years and years.
Since childhood I’d been stuck like this. Kids I met for the first time looked at me rudely and unkindly. Even
my friends—actually, I had very few friends because I just felt too ashamed and frightened to make some,
though I was eager to and felt extremely lonely in the depth of my heart—laughed at me and gave me bad
nicknames. I felt terrible, but I’d just resigned to a life where I’d be afraid of everything and be this “introvert”
(内向的人) or whatever. I thought I would never be able to change, never, for my whole life.
But then it all started changing. Something clicked. I suddenly determined to go on a diet, and lost some
weight. It was tough. I felt hungry all the time. I was always tempted by the smell of bread and hamburger,
even when I didn’t see them. But the toughest thing was that even if I had just had my meals, I felt hunger
mentally. However, I held on. In over a period of 6 months I finally managed to stick to one of my diets. Ididn’t know how. But I did make it.
The loss of 90 lbs brought me from overweight straight down to underweight. This isn’t the best part.
More importantly and inspiringly, I suddenly found strength in me. I realized I could be totally different. And
maybe, I could even be whatever I wanted to be. This taught me that I could change myself.
Then I wondered, perhaps, I could also get rid of those of my fears, just like I succeeded in losing my
extra pounds. It might not be easy, but it might not be that difficult.

For me, it was normal to feel lost at the intercamp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their
teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete.
I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me
of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the twomile race around the lake, I
knew I was no one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a
counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred!
We need a 12yearold who hasn’t been in other events to run the twomile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the
shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last
stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a
little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto
the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over
a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

One afternoon after school, Mary and his brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That
afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties.
After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five
minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “ Keith, the girl left behind her
handphone.” Keith looked at the handphone. It was one of the latest models on the market. Looking very
sleek, it was red in color with a black cover. The handphone must be expensive.
Keith had always wanted a handphone, But his parents refused. He stared at it for some minutes. Then he
said slowly, pausing on very word, “ I want to take the handphone, ” Mary could not believe her eyes. She
merely stared at her brother, “ you can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he
took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly. Outside the café, he ran to his bicycle. Mary had to run
after him.Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Looking at the handphone, he liked
it so much. Now he had his own handphone. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone.
What will you tell father about this handphone?”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “ Now you are lying, too. ” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone, “This phone number is the
girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take
back her handphone.” She was trying her best to talk some sense into him.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul departed my body and I had no
control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster (名单) posted on the wall of the locker room. My heart
was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. At
that moment, I froze. I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team while I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Hey coach, are you sure that
the roster you posted is correct?” I asked anxiously, dreading (担心) his answer.
“Yes, the names on the list are finalized. Sorry if you did not make it this year, there is always next year,”
the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to
forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothingmattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind
was also blank for the rest of the school day. Everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the rear of
the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying
not to think about being the only one in our friend group failing to make the team.
I saw my father’s car pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me,
played the radio, and started driving home.

6yearold Jesse was playing in the field when he suffered an electric shock, leaving him unconscious. He
was rushed to the hospital. When he opened his eyes, he found both his arms gone.
His mother was in deep concern. She was aware that Jesse couldn't depend on his parents all his life. So
she guided Jesse to learn to use his feet. To her delight, within three months, Jesse could do many things with
his feet, even write.
It was time for Jesse to start school. On the first day, he was laughed at by other kids. Then Jesse
surprised everyone that he wrote much more beautifully than the normal kids.
While walking, Jesse often fell because it was hard for him to keep balance without arms. He practiced
again and again until he made it to walk steadily. Then he could even run fast.
At the age of 10, Jesse became an athlete of the disabled track and field team of his city. He practiced
very hard. At the age of 14, he was able to run 400 meters in 56 seconds. And it was hoped that he could
compete for the national champion. However, the international track and field rules suddenly changed and hisevent was cancelled.
No one’s life is easy, especially for the disabled. But Jesse didn’t lose heart. He changed to swimming.
He was talented and became a professional member at the age of 17 with the hope of winning the qualification
of entering the Olympic Games. But just before the competition, his old injury returned and he only got the
sixth place, which meant he could go no further in sports. He was at a great loss, wondering where his future

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. I felt the
string of the package softly and then, unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I tore it open. It was a bright,
brand new laptop. I had scored straight as for my O level examination and this was my reward. I had always
envied my friends who were exchanging news about ‘chat rooms’, ‘instant messaging’ and ‘emailing’, all of
which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I came across a social
networking site. Soon I became attracted to my newfound electronic friend. I began to spend more and more
time on YouTube and became addicted to Facebook and Twitter. I had never imagined that the day would
come when I would be controlled entirely by the glowing screen before me. Whenever I was not glued to these
social networking sites, I would be going through gossip or fashion websites.
As time passed, I realized that I was addicted to the Internet. During weekends, when I had more time on
my hands, I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in
my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the peopleI made friends with on the Internet although I had never met them. Soon I was spending the whole hours of the
morning surfing on the Internet. Sleep was reduced to small naps and my grades at school also began getting
from bad to worse.

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer. I took what I
could get a teaching job in what I considered a distant wild area; western New Jersey. My characteristic
optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was
fourteen—teaching English.
School started I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then
there was my sixth grade classseventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a
problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make
literature come alive and to promote a love for the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团)
and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident
that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It
sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem
reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my task master (监工), known to be the strictest, most
demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students
exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting eachotherwhile the girls filed (锉) their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening, and went
on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be
growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before
my eyes. I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I
had to face him.

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Sibson’s bedroom skylight(天窗). Sibson was shaken by a
clap of thunder before he knew what was happening. The storm had moved directly through his twostory
wooden house. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping.
Sibson rushed down the stairs barefoot to check. He opened the door to the basement, and flames
exploded out. Sibson ran back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom. “I felt glad because the room had a
separate outdoor stairway,” he explained to the media later.
But the phone didn’t work, and when he tried to go down the outdoor stairway, he was stopped by a wall
of flames. Sibson realized he was trapped. Suddenly, a piece of wood fell from the roof. Sharp pain raced
through his body as he looked down and found his leg bleeding.
Sibson’s house was three kilometers off the main road and was so well hidden by trees that he knew
calling for help would be fruitless.
Up a hill nearby lived Sibson’s neighbor, Huggons. He was lying in bed when something like a smoke
alarm struck his ears. He jumped out of bed, took his phone and flashlight, and headed down the hillsidetoward the noise. That was when he saw the rolling heavy smoke.
Huggons dialed 911, and the operator warned him not to enter the house. But Huggons said, “There is no
way I am going to listen to Sibson scream and die in that fire.”
“Anyone there?” Huggons called out. Then he heard “Help! I’m trapped!” coming from the second floor
balcony. He entered the house, but soon had to run back to catch his breath.
After one more attempt to get inside the house, Huggons gave up and circled around back. The wind
parted the smoke just enough for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him.
With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down
in the next minute.

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour.”
Groups of incoming freshman happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than
thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother’s side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I
felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made causal
introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this? After all, it had only been a
few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college...?
My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, “Hi, I’m Jennifer.” “I’m Lauren,” I replied.“Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus?” she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide
announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.
We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告)
and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like
those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn’t even
opened my course catalog (目录).
“Focus,” I told myself. “just read through the catalog and find the course you like and a schedule that
works” psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, history, sections 1, 2, 3…The list went on and on.
I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it? I was just
relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone
could help me.
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.

My school had a tradition during the ninthgrade graduation: A beautiful gold and green jacket (the school
colors) was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning thatjacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to
my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it.
This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone,
my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match
Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify (伪造) records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board (董事会), but he owns the
only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through.
“…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”
To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my
pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in
policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars,
which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So, if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it
will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, “I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you
know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling(种树苗),Pa. Have we planted enough?”Pa
walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to
that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings.” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through
the cotton field. “You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are
dangers all over this prairie(牧场/草原)“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish
before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.Gently, they
pulled the seedlings from the sand.“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare.” said Rebecca.“OK,” said
William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.
“Look! There’s the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year.” He pointed to a hole in
the grassy river bank. “Come on, let’s go inside.” “No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard telling
what’s in there.” “Then you start back.” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran
to the dugout and stepped inside.
Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙)and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her
tracks.A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇)moved along the river bank.It stopped right in front of the dugout
and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank.“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh?” Williams face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward
the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward
Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes
waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout?”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head.
It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice.“When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”Rebecca removed the skirtlike petticoat(衬裙)
from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the
top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.

Jessie had two days’leave in January this year. She surfed the Internet for cheap travel deals and found
the most impressive to be a twoday trip to Dublin. Jessie had never visited Ireland so she knew this was the
destination for her.
She arrived in Dublin and headed for her hotel. She was excited. When she found her hotel, she paid her
money for both nights in advance. The receptionist (接待员) said that was possibly the smartest thing she had
done since she decided to take the trip. Jessie dropped her bags in her room and immediately went out to
check out some of the sights. It was getting late as Jessie wandered in the streets and decided that even though
she was starving, she would rather wait to have dinner later after having a drink.
She headed into the closest pub. Jessie noticed a rather strangelooking man staring at her from across the
room. He walked to her table and asked her in his most polite manner if she would like to have a beer. After
about ten seconds of thought, Jessie came to the conclusion that she would and accepted the offer. But she
proposed that she should treat him to some fruits. The man smiled and accepted.
Their conversation was mainly about places they had been and places they wanted to go. Jessie soon
found out that he was traveling alone too and as soon as he started mentioning that he was staying in the samehotel as her, Jessie swiftly rose from her seat to get another drink.
Searching through her bag Jessie found that her wallet was gone! Immediately she realized she took the
wrong bag. Her wallet was in another bag. Jessie didn’t panic at first until it hit her that without it, she had not
one penny in hand. She was starving. Worst of all, she had generously proposed a treat to the man.

Prissy Baker was in Oscar Miller’s store New Year’s morning when her uncle, Richard Baker, a bachelor,
came in. He did not look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year. Uncle Richard had not been on
speaking terms with her or her father for eight years. When she had been a little girl they had been great
friends; but that was before the quarrel.
When Prissy had been nine years old, Richard and Irving Baker had quarreled over the division of a piece
of property. The fault had been mainly on Richard’s side, and that very fact made him all the more stubborn.
He had never spoken to his brother since, and he declared he never would. Prissy and her father felt very badly
over it, but Uncle Richard seemed to have completely forgotten them.
Richard told Mr. Miller that he was on business but that he didn’t like it.“Well, I always like a good
dinner on New Year’s,” said Richard. “It’s about the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready lastnight, but I won’t get back before one o’clock, so I think I’ll have to put up with a cold bite.”
After Richard had driven away, Prissy walked thoughtfully home. She had planned to spend a holiday
with a new book. She did not even mean to cook dinner, for her father had had to go to the town that morning
and would be gone the whole day. There was nobody else to cook dinner for. Prissy’s mother had died long
ago.
Suddenly an idea popped into Prissy’s head. Dared she? Oh, she never could! But he would never know.
There would be plenty of time!
Prissy had no trouble breaking into Uncle Richard’s house, for the woodshed door was unfastened. She
tripped into the kitchen with rosy cheeks and mischief sparkling in her eyes. In a short time, the kitchen was
full of appetizing odors. As the clock struck twelve, Prissy had the table set.
Prissy was about to slip away when the door was pushed open.

It was a rainy winter evening. Joe could see an old lady on the side of the road waiting for help. So he

Please go and stay inside the car. By the way, my name is Joe.”Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. While Joe was changing the tire,
the lady rolled down the window and started to talk to him. She told him that she was only passing through.
She was very grateful that he came to help her. Joe just smiled as he put the flat tire in the trunk (后备箱).
“How much do I owe you?” the lady asked, then adding that any amount would be all right. Joe,
however, rejected the payment. “You don’t owe me a thing. I’m only passing through. Someone once helped

Nellie and I have been best friends for if long as I can remember. We were born only a few days apart, so
every year we planned a combined birthday. When we were in seventh grade, our moms said we could invite
boys to our party.
We were writing out the invitation list when my mom came up. “What about inviting John?” Mom asked.
John had been in our class for only two months, but he got better grades in math and science than anyone
else in class. He was a loner, though, and hadn’t made many friends.
I wrinkled my nose. “Mom. he wears the same pants every day. How could he even afford a costume?”
“The same pants?” Mom frowned.“Yes. Brown corduroy ones” I sighed.
After school the next day, as Nellie and I were cutting paper for decorations, Mom handed me an
envelope.
“Nellie's mom and I thought it’d be nice for you two to give this to John,” Mom said as she headed back
to her office.
I opened the envelope delicately. Inside was a gift certificate for our favorite department store. Staring at
the certificate in shock, we both knew how many cute clothes that would buy.
“So, are we going to hand it to him?” I asked.
“How embarrassing that would be!” Nellie said.
Indeed, John would be ashamed if we gave him money for clothes. “What if we slip it into his desk when
no one is looking?” I proposed.
“He’d probably give it to the teacher, and then we’d have to say it was for him in front of the whole
class.” Nellie rolled her eyes. More embarrassing. We had to think of something else.
“I have an idea.” Nellie snatched the envelope.
“What?”
“I won't tell you.” Nellie sang as she ran away.

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was
going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amyand we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make
new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy".
So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or
gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(荣耀)of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked
me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's
number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and
Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when
they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they
couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good
enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of
bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody,
depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

Five years ago, I had a ninetofive job, and I usually commuted to work by bus. Those long tiring hours of
travelling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.
It was a warm March evening, and I'd just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in thethird row by the window, on the driver's side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the
driver gave no indication that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.
A middleaged woman look a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she
tearfully told her story.
She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the terminal, a thief had snatched one of her
bags. It had contained half of the money she'd brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief
and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.
The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her tale. After a few minutes, she stopped
crying, removed some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, worry still sweeping over her.
An old man in ragged and shabby clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seal directly in front of the woman.
After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus
conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When by came to the old man's
seal, he became suspicious and asked the old man whether he had any money .The old man admitted that he
did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he'd accidentally got on the wrong
bus and now he was trying to go home.

On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I
was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree.
Then I listened to my voicemail. “We’re sorry, but your work assignment has ended as of today.” My heart
sank.My paycheck was survival, I did everything I could to give Kristil a good life, but there were some things
my love couldn’t fix. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed the
Christmas tree prices. Kristil noticed I was worried and I told her I had lost my job. She wanted to give me the
$100 that Grandma gave her, but I refused.
Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my moneymaking pursuits. I headed to the
pawnshop (当铺) with a gold ring my mother had given me, and they gave me $70. Next was the antiques
store. I sold six Precious Moments statuettes for $150. I ended the day $220 richer.
Over the next week, I furiously (猛烈地) applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt as if the
world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a
birthday party. I drove home defeated.
Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing all morning. I noticed a small woman
struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Sister
Esther. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago. I’d first met Sister Esther 10 years earlier,
when I was her student at Edgewood College. After I graduated, Sister Esther kept in touch, meeting me for
lunch every few months. I had grown to love her like family. I rushed to the front of my building. “What are
you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged.

I ran after the train, shouting, “Hey mister, can’t you see me?” It was hopeless, as no conductor is going
to slow down for a 60yearold man who got to the station several minutes late. They absolutely didn’t know
how important that day, that train ride was to me! I was on my way to an interview for what could have been
the opportunity of a lifetime.
I threw both my hat and my art case down in depression, and sat down on the nearest chair, wiping (擦
掉)the sweat from my face and breathing heavily. I would have to wait a whole day for the next train, and by
then my appointment with the gallery owner would have given up on me. Perhaps it was for the best. It was,
after all, the first time in 40 years anyone had shown such an interest in my art. Maybe if the gallery owner
had seen all my paintings, he would have changed his mind about offering me space on his walls.
Disappointment filled my soul. Should I dial the gallery and get an interview on a different day? But
Pierre Gianni was the owner of the most wellknown gallery in New York City. Why would he give a rare
second chance to an elderly nobody when he had the newest, coolest young artists to choose from?
Come to think of it, perhaps these insecurities were the very reason I had never been offered a show
before. I was too afraid to try. I found countless excuses not to offer my work up to be seen and perhaps
criticized. I told myself it would hurt too much if I failed, but the truth was that I had never tried.
Finally, I gathered all my courage to dial the gallery, only to find my antique cell phone had broken
down. It was at the very moment that I was in total despair and decided to go home.

An A for Mrs. B
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninthgrade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new
project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the
requests, Mrs. B.informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us
know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Only a few people behaved
normally in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously waited for the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B
called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was
called. So, I’m in group three,I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My
name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes.
How could I face being in that group—the boy who rarely spoke English, the one girl who was always
covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird clothes. Oh, how badly I
wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B.She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was
determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why. . . ?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group
needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
I was stunned. I was confused. I was amazed. She had seen something in me I hadn’t seen.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I had
committed.

I was in 7th grade when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very sudden and unexpected
for our family and obviously I was beaten. I tried my best to balance my first year of middle school and my
home life, even if I knew this was impossible. I hated coming home from school every day for fear of what I
would see when I got home. I hated seeing my mom sick all the time; she was not herself and all I wanted was
for her to stop treatment and get better. Luckily, I had lots of support from my family, friends, and teachers
during this hard time to help get me through it.
At the beginning of the year, I was determined to stay on track with my homework and studying and get
through my first year at middle school successfully. Slowly, I started to become more distracted while at home
with taking care of my mom, cleaning the house and helping my grandma cook our meals. While I was at
school, I could escape and put my mom’s sickness in the back of my mind while I hung out with my friends
and enjoyed playing. I noticed that my quiz and test grades were increasingly getting worse, but I never
brought this to the attention of my mom because I did not want to worry her. Eventually, all of my grades werelower than C’s.
I knew that I was not doing well at school, and I needed to get my grades back up. I knew that a lot of my
teachers were cutting me some unimportant work because they knew what was happening at home. Ms.

When Aiden asked me to accompany him on a camping trip to the mountains, I envisioned a log cabin
with a crackling fireplace, hot cocoa, and bunk beds. Imagine how my rustic, yet comfortable image of
camping became a nightmare when Aiden and his older brother, Lebron, showed up with a truck filled with
camping suppliestents, rolledup sleeping bags, and canteens! I did pack a backpack, as instructed, but I had no
idea we were going on survival training!
Lebron, ever so efficient, had a schedule to keep, and he hurried me to get in so we could leave the cityhustle and bustle behind us. Ahead, the mountains loomed bigger than I had remembered them; the trees were
larger, and the environment was much more dangerous. At least the weather was amazing — cottoncandy
clouds dotted the deep blue sky.
At the trailhead, Lebron strapped a sleeping bag onto my pack and lectured Aiden and me about hiking
etiquette.
The first part of the trail looked more like a wooded road that led up the mountains than a hiking path.
Soon, the path became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus on the task at hand and to talk less. As we
gained elevation, we moved above the tree line, and I could see the trail zigzagging up the mountain.
“It looks closer than it is,” Lebron said, reading my facial cues. “This is the most difficult part … watch
the trail, not the view. Loose rocks and tree roots make the trail dangerous, and we have no shade.”
Finally, we reached the summit. My legs aching, I dropped my pack and groaned.
“No time to rest,” Lebron said, looking up at the sky. The weather had been warm all day, and it felt good
to relax in the cool breeze. “The weather up here changes quickly, and that cool air means a storm is brewing.
We need to set up camp.”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school choir asked eagerly.
I worried about this moment. “I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we would skip the contest and just work
hard on the concerts this year.”
“NO!” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to the contest!”
“It’s a tradition!”
Indeed, award plaques (牌匾) lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large,
talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academics had reduced my choir to
a mere thirtytwo young, inexperienced kids who could sing only a simple melody.
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks. Quite on
the contrary, more determined, they begged and insisted every day. To protect their pride, I couldn’t tell them
they weren’t good enough. But I wasn’t a miracle worker. And so I hesitated about this dilemma.
Finally one morning I stepped into class. “Look at the clock!” I demanded. “We’ve wasted two full
minutes because some of you don’t have your music ready. If we are entering the contest” The rest of my
sentence was lost in cheers of delight and applause.
“From now on,” I continued when the noise weakened, “you will find the day’s lesson plan on the board.
Make full preparations for each class and follow my instructions absolutely. You will work much harder than
you’ve ever worked in any class before. And if one of these rules is broken, we will not go to the contest.”
I was certain they would fail to keep this contract, and no one would be embarrassed. But the kids
remained focused, following the rules strictly. Each morning witnessed their diligence: working on
sightreading, learning musical terms, rehearsing, etc. Their progress was so remarkable that even I began
believing in their dream.
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready and confident to take on the world! Their eyes,
however, opened wide when the Madison choir marched in seventyfive members strong. My kids’ jaws
dropped when 125 students from King School arrived. Two private schools came with fifty members each, and
finally fortyfive members from Milwaukee School of Art.

Throughout life, we come across many people who impact us in a way. Their impact can be for a day or
for a lifetime. It’s common not to recognize the impact someone has left on you until a certain moment. The
person who left a great impact on me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen, my life was great. I was getting settled into a high school; my grades
were already starting off greatly and I was making friends.
One day as I came home from school, I walked into the living room, finding my mom and dad talking.
My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was something important they had to tell me. I
soon found out that my dad’s liver was failing and he needed an immediate transplant. I was shocked and
confused because my dad seemed fine. He was working and never looked sick. My parents told me not to
worry because everything would be fine. Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new
liver ; he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he
was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me. My dad had to quit his job leaving my mom to be the only
provider. I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad
while my mom was at work. I had to cut back on hanging with my friends because my dad was beginning to
go in and out of the hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip. So were my grades. Two nights beforemy school spring break, my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and
that he was in hospital. Surprisingly, my dad hadn’t received a scratch on him. Then next night my mom
received a call from the doctor stating that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to
get to the hospital immediately.

On June 4th, my family and I decided to go whitewater rafting(激浪漂流) down the Nantahala River in
Western North Carolina. It was a perfect day to be out on the water. My father thought that we could all deal
with a new situation, so he decided to bring us to go without a guide at this new, hard course. My mom and I
were upset by my dad’s decision, but my brother was pleased with it. So, we had to agree with them. We got
life jackets, our raft and paddles that were used to row it, and then took a bus to the drop point where we
carried the raft to the icy cold water. Having finished the training, we were on our own whitewater rafting.Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to get us off the rocks. After
about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river. It was coming out of the water about ten
feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow, we ended up on top of this rock. After about a minute, water
started rushing in where my brother was sitting. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back.
Unfortunately, we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only get to my brother
because he was closer than I was. My dad jumped out and ran up the bank of the river to get to the road, so he
could see where I was. I was picked up after about two minutes by a stranger in another raft and was heading
down the river toward a little resting spot.

It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see.
I approached her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an older woman, sitting on the edge
of the bed, struggling to put socks on her swollen feet.
I crossed the threshold(门口), spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart, noting she was in stable
condition. I was almost in the clear.
I leaned on the bed rail looking down at her. She asked if I could help put on her socks. I thought I had
other priorities on the list. It’s my responsibility to arrange the issue. So instead, I launched into amonologue(独白)that went something like this: “How are you feeling? Your sugars and blood pressure were
high but they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re anxious to see your son who’s visiting you today.
It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She stopped me in a serious, authoritative voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her
only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the stress
of this contributed greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if
there was anything else I could do for her. She shook her head no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to
listen.
And, not long after, in an unexpected twist, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at
age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time in a wheelchair. For as long as I could, I continued to see

Pam Bales left her car and stepped onto the snowcovered Jewell Trail. She planned a sixhour hike
through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. The hike up the lower part of Jewell was pleasant.
At 8:30 am, still below the tree line, she took the first in a series of onthetrail selfies.
Less than an hour later, she took another photo, after she’d climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She
made her way across the snowcovered ridge toward Mount Washington. Then she noticed something: a single
set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She’d been following faint tracks all day and hadn’t given them
much thought, because so many people climb Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of
trainers, not suitable for hiking on snow.
By 11 am, Bales was getting cold and decided to abandon her plan. The only thing keeping Bales on
Gulfside Trail was the trainer tracks in the sonw. As she fought the wind and heavy sleet (雨夹雪), the tracks
made a hard lefthand turn off the trail.
Now she alarmed. She was sure the hiker could get through in the ow visibility and was heading straight
toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf Wilderness. Bales stood there, stunned. The temperature and
clouds were in a race to find their lowest point, and darkness was mere hours away. She turned to the left and
called out, “Hello!” into the frozen fog.
Nothing. She called out again: “Is anybody out there? Do you need help?”
The strong westerly winds carried her voice away. She blew into her rescue whistle. For a fleeting
moment she thought she heard someone reply, but it was just the wind playing games with her mind. She
stood listening, then turned and walked cautiously in the direction of the single set of tracks. Bales followed
the tracks cautiously for 20 to 30 meters. She rounded a slight corner and saw a man sitting motionless.
