Passage 4 话题:做蓝领工人的经历 难度:易 词数:368
I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer since
I graduated from high school, but making the transition (转变) between
school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any
easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be
uncivilized, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is torture. My
friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school
or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There're few people as self-confident as a college student who has never
been out in the real world. People my age always seem to overestimate the
value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare
me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam
whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could
disappear overnight.Issues like downsizing (裁员) and overseas relocation
had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I
was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where
people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working a 12-hour shift in a factory, the other options have become
only too clear. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and
turning in lazy rewrites seem too irresponsible after seeing what I would
be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements
about the value of an education that used to sound stale now ring true.
These lessons I'm learning, however valuable, are always tinged (带有) with
a sense of guilt. Many people spend their lives in the places I briefly
work, spending 30 years where I spend only two months at a time. “This job北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
pays well, but it's hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard
and keep reading,” she added.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my
college years before I enter the real world for good.
1. How did the author look back on his summer days while at college?
A.They brought him nothing but torture.
B.They were no holiday for him at all.
C.They were the relief from his hard work at school.
D.They offered him a chance to know more people.
2. What does the author say about college students?
A.They expect too much from the real world.
B.They have little interest in blue-collar life.
C.They think too highly of themselves.
D.They are confident of their future.
3.What, according to the author, is most frustrating for blue-collar
workers?
A.They do not have job security.
B.They do not get decent pay.
C.They have to work a 12-hour shift.
D.They have to move from place to place.
4. In what important way has the author's work experience changed him?
A.He learned to be more practical.
B.He acquired a sense of urgency.
C.He came to respect blue-collar workers.
D.He came to appreciate his college education.

classmates,” explains founder and CEO Chris Goodwin. “Our site encourages

memorable school trips, as well as less memorable moments like those awful
school lunches.”

Passage 8
Most people have probably spent more of 2020 canceling travel plans than
making them, but it's not too late to reverse that trend. Here are some
vacations you can plan this fall.
Road trip to a local farm
Visiting a farm is “number one” travel pick right now. Price plays a big
role in that suggestion. Apple picking, for example, is usually very
affordable, with some orchards (果园) offering products by the pound, for
$1 or $2, and others offering a flat fee for an all-you-can-fill bag for
about $30.
Visit a national park
There are many national parks in the U.S., so the odds are that you've got
one in the driving range. If you're up for a challenge, you can climb Half
Dome in Yosemite or race down the great sand dunes in Colorado. The parks
are also affordable. An annual pass, which guarantees entry to every park
for an entire family, is just $80.
Plan a camping trip
Camping doesn't cost much. Most states have dozens of drive-in camp sites,
while you can also find cabins in the $50—$100 per night range. There's no北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
shortage of activities, either — whether it's fishing, hiking, biking or
just perfecting your camping recipe.
Rent an RV (野营车)
RVs are a prime option for a cheap vacation. Using an RV for a vacation
means you're paying for your transportation and lodging all in one. Also,
considering that some two-person RVs can go for as little as $175—$200 per
night, you can easily find yourself traveling around the country without
breaking the bank.
1.Which vacation would a thrill seeker most probably choose?
A.Road trip to a local farm.
B.Visit a national park.
C.Plan a camping trip.
D.Rent an RV.
2.What do the vacations have in common?
A.Wallet-friendly.
B.Environment-friendly.
C.Family-friendly.
D.User-friendly.
3.What's the unique advantage of renting an RV?
A.It makes your vacation adventurous.
B.It offers free trips around the world.
C.You can kill two birds with one stone.

Passage 9
It was New Year's night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised
his sad eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like
white lilies (百合花) on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast
them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself moved
towards their certain goal—the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the
stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but
errors and regrets.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he remembered
the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two
roads—one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits
and resounding with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark
cave, which was endless, where poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.
He saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of
himself. His regret, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his
heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered on life
together with him. But they had made their way to success and were honored
and happy on this New Year's night. With shame and grief he dared no longer
look towards that heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were
full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he let out a cry, “Come back,
my early days! Come back!”
And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New
Year's night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not
yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road
which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
As for those who still remain at the entrance of life, hesitating to choose
the bright road, remember that when years have passed and your feet fall on
the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain, “Oh youth, return!
Oh give me back my early days!”

A.His father died.
B.His father lived far away.
C.His father returned home.

Passage 13
Parker Stewart, a 16-year-old from Sayre School, a college preparatory
school in the United States, knew last year that he wanted his independent
study on the environment to have a broad impact on the community. In order
to “reduce the carbon footprint”, Parker planned to produce enough solar
energy to power the school's science labs. Now his plan is set to happen.
The installation of 30 solar panels is scheduled for late January.
As he began his research on solar energy, he discovered a useful phone app.
By entering an address, he could find out how much sunlight the location
receives each day. Based on how much sunlight it receives, he found that
his school building was the desired position.
At the suggestion of his science teacher, Debbie Wheeler, Parker first
performed an energy audit(审计)of the science lab to see how much energy a
typical lab uses per day. Then, he started his research, contacting a local

include a total of 30 panels. They are expected to generate enough energy
to run all four of the science labs on campus.

Passage 15
Let's be honest: It can be hard to get motivated to do your schoolwork even
at the best of times. So finding the motivation, while you're learning at
home, is extra challenging. Here are a few tips that could maximize your
motivation.
1.Guard Your Time
You do not need large amounts of time to be productive. Instead, be focused
in short blocks when you can work without interruption. Protect these times
by setting up your workspace to minimize distractions—including silencing
notifications(通知) on your cellphone or laptop.
2.Determine How Much Work Is Needed
Write down the work you need to achieve, because there is a limit to how
much information you can recall and process at one time. Examine the
remaining projects, and estimate the amount and type of effort each
requires.
3.Break Large Projects into Smaller Ones
Breaking big projects into smaller and more manageable tasks allows you to
achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Your assigned tasks should北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
follow a logical order. Also, making a list and crossing things off that
list is really satisfying.
4.Set Goals
Set goals related to effort. For example, plan to spend 60 minutes at a
specific time of the day studying a pre-determined concept. Also, set goals
related to the completion of specific tasks or projects. For instance, give
yourself a deadline to read and take notes on a specific article for a
certain paper you must write.
5.Identify the Rewards
It pays to clarify the rewards this term, whether those rewards are
internal, such as the feeling of accomplishment that comes from
understanding a difficult concept well, or external, such as getting a good
grade.
Work to build good habits and strategies now. It will pay off in the
future.
1.What skills do the first two tips relate to?
A.Writing skills.
B.Social skills.
C.Teamwork skills.
D.Time management skills.
2.According to the passage, which can help you most when you are faced with

Passage 1
A Dutch company has developed technology to follow the movements and
activities of cows. The high-tech system, powered by AI and motion sensors,
is called “the Intelligent Dairy Farmer's Assistant”. The company,
Connecterra, launched the system in the United States in December after
several years of testing and operation in Europe.
A device is put around the neck of the cow to record its movements.
This information is then processed by a computer that uses AI to learn
about the animal's behavior over time. The system can tell farmers what the
cow is doing in real time. This information can help predict when cattle
get sick, become less productive or are ready for mating.
Richard Watson owns the Seven Oaks Dairy in Waynesboro, Georgia. He was
one of the first American farmers to use the high-tech system.
“It can pick up whether the cow is eating, whether it is walking,
whether it is drinking, whether it is lying down, standing up.”
Richard said the system is a big help because it is impossible for
farmers to keep up with the activities of each cow individually. He added
that having a computer identify which of his 2,000 cattle need attention北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
could help improve farm productivity by up to 10 percent. He estimated this
difference could greatly increase his profits.
“Just a 10 percent or 5 percent increase or improvement in
productivity means hundreds of thousands of dollars to us, aside from the
fact that we just want happier, healthier and more welfare of our animals,
anyway.”
The founder and head of Connecterra is Yasir Khokhar. He said the idea
for the system came while he was living on a dairy farm in the south of
Amsterdam.
“It turns out that the technology farmers use is really outdated in
many aspects,” Yasir Khokhar told the Associated Press. “Most of the
technology that does exist is difficult to use and modern agriculture
greatly needs new technology like this,” he added.
The company says information about the cows can be collected and seen
on a cellphone or other mobile devices. A text message can also inform
farmers of concerns involving the animals.
1.How does “The Intelligent Dairy Farmer's Assistant” help farmers?
A.By giving alarms to farmers.
B.By focusing farmers' attention on cattle.
C.By sending real-time information about cows to farmers.
D.By telling farmers which cow is less productive or ready to mate.
2.What's Richard Watson's attitude towards the high-tech system?
A.Indifferent.
B.Neutral.
C.Passive.
D.Confident.
3.Why did Yasir Khokhar come up with the idea of the high-tech system?
A.Because he once lived on a dairy farm.
B.Because some agricultural technologies were out of date.
C.Because he wanted to increase the income of farmers.
D.Because some farming systems turned out to be a failure.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Modern agriculture in America.
B.Ways of raising cows more efficiently.
C.A Dutch company known as a high-tech system.
D.“Smart Farm” technology tracking behavior of cows.

(BES) annual photography competition. Here are a few of 2019's winning
entries.
Red Night
Photographed by Roberto Garcia Roa, it was declared last year's overall
winner. The image captures both the beauty of the magnificent snake and its
fear of human threats like fires. The ecologist says, “During my visit to
Madagascar, I had the pleasure of finding this snake and photographing
it.To offer a dramatic scene reflecting the conditions that these snakes
are suffering, I used an external red light as a source of light to capture

The Rhino's Annual Haircut
It was photographed by ecologist Molly Penny. The ongoing demand for
rhino (犀牛) horns has reduced the population to just 30,000 globally. To
try to save the species, ecologists in South Africa, home to over 20,000
southern white rhinos, have decided to saw off (锯掉) a part of the
animals' horns, which regrow every year.“The Rhino's Annual Haircut,”
captured beautifully in the black-and-white photo by Molly Penny from the
University of the West of England, reduces the risk of the animals being
cruelly murdered.
For the Love of Flamingos
Photographed by Peter Hudson, it captures a heart-shaped cloud of pink
flamingos in Kenya, which is truly a sight like none other. The ecologist
says, “Flamingos are all legs and necks but meanwhile beautiful and
fascinating and I admit I have a deep passion for them, so I was thrilled
when, flying high over Lake Magadi, I watched this flock from themselves
into a heart shape.”
Flames in Flumes
Photographed by Nilanjan Chatterjee, it captures a water redstart
waiting to catch an insect near a small waterfall. It was the best overall
student submission. The photographer wanted to show the struggle the river
birds are likely to face from the slowdown in water flow due to planned
dams in rivers across India.

Passage 7
I live in a small town of about 12,000 people. Normally, the streets
are busy with cars, the sidewalks are filled with pedestrians and the
stores are filled with shoppers going about their business. My home is
within sight of Victoria International Airport and we are used to the
background sound of large passenger aircraft arriving and departing.
Restaurants are usually crowded at mealtimes and friends visit back and
forth frequently. However, life is different now.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
Most stores here are now closed except for those such as grocery stores
that supply an essential service. You can't have a meal in a restaurant
now, although some are still cooking food you can take home. When I walk
through downtown I can wander across the main street almost any time I
please without much danger because there are so few cars. Even the airport
is quiet because people aren't travelling as they used to.
We haven't been told if there are any actual cases of COVID-19 in our town,
although I would be a little surprised if there weren't any. We have a
fairly large proportion of our population made up of senior citizens who
are likely to be affected by the disease. We have five or six long-term
care homes for seniors here and the fear is that if the virus gets into one
it will be disastrous.
There is no question that the world has changed. We're lucky, in a sense,
because we saw what happened in China and we learned from that experience.
We know to stay at least two meters away from other people. We know to wash
our hands frequently, to wear face masks and to limit our time in those few
stores that are open. It seems to be working and there is hope that we can
soon beat this bug into submission(屈服) but, for now, it's a strange
world. It also makes me wonder if this virus, like the flu virus, will
mutate (突变) almost every year and turn the world into a series of
situations like this.
1. What can we learn from the passage?
A.The small town where the author lives has a large population.
B.Most restaurants are usually crowded in spite of the disease.
C.People can walk freely on the streets as there are no cars.
D.It is quite possible for the elderly people to get infected.
2.Why does the author say “We're lucky” in the last paragraph?
A.We lead a normal life as usual.
B.We've learnt a lot from China.
C.We haven't been affected by COVID-19.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
D.We are hopeful of defeating the disease.
3.Which section of a magazine may the passage be from?

Passage 8
Madonna is definitely the Queen of Pop. She released her first album in
1983.And she quickly became a superstar and a cultural icon(偶像). In her
early years, she attracted criticism for her racy music videos and lyrics.
And some of her videos were banned by MTV and even criticised by the
Vatican.
But all the controversy has been good for business. Madonna has sold
millions of albums and is the best-selling female recording artist of all
time. And these days, she's as popular as ever. So how has the Material
Girl managed to stay on top?
Many say it's because she constantly changes her style and keeps up with
the latest musical trends. As a result, she's also known as the “Queen of
Reinvention”. One business school professor called her “America's北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
smartest businesswoman”. He said her secret is “planning, personal
discipline and a constant attention to detail”.
But Madonna is more than just a pop star. In 2003 Madonna published The
English Roses, her first children's book. It's about four English girls who
make friends with a poor girl called Binah. The book was the fastest-
selling children's picture book ever, and a New York Times bestseller.
Since then, Madonna has written several more books in the series. How does
she find the time? Well, some say the books are ghost-written. Madonna
hasn't commented on that, but she did say her children helped her with the
books.
“I tried out all the stories on my children, and whenever they got bored
or started fidgeting(烦躁), I knew I had to fix that part of the story,”
she explained.
In the last ten years she's published several children's books, directed
two films, designed a fashion label and opened a chain of gyms. A reporter
recently asked her what she had planned next. Madonna said, “The White
House!”
Madonna for President? Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see.
1.Why is Madonna called the “Queen of Reinvention”?
A.Her changeable music can attract criticism.
B.She is expert at creating up-to-date music.
C.She is America's smartest businesswoman.
D.She always focuses her attention on details.
2.What can we know about Madonna's first children's book?
A.It came out twenty years later than her first album.
B.It tells interesting stories about four English girls.
C.It's been the fastest-selling picture book ever since.
D.It was written with the help of the ghost and her kids.

specialist at Canada's Western University in London, Ontario. Adolescents
are more sensitive than any other age group to foods with much processed
fat and sugar, she says.
She and two other researchers recently reviewed over 100 studies about how
poor food choices can impact adolescent brains. They found that adolescent
brains aren't yet fully formed. And that actually leads to three problems,
says Reichelt. First, adolescent brains are still developing the ability to
assess risks and control actions. Second, teen brains get more pleasure
than adult brains do from eating junk food. Third, adolescent brains can be北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
more easily influenced by their environment, diet, etc. Together, these all
can combine to make junk food both hard to stay away from and extra bad for
teen health.
Other researchers have also found links between brain health and what
teenage kids eat. Felice Jacka, an expert in nutrition at Deakin University
in Victoria, Australia, is one of them. She and her team interviewed over
2,000 11-to 14-year-olds living in London. Each answered questions about
what they ate and how they felt mentally. The researchers then scored each
kid's answers for signs of depression. Adolescents who ate the most junk
food were nearly 50% more likely to show signs of depression. So teenagers
should avoid junk food for the health of their brains, suggested the
researchers.
1.What can eating junk food cause according to Reichelt?
A.A poor memory.
B.Too much nutrition.
C.Calmer behavior.
D.Insensitivity to food.
2.Why is it difficult for adolescents to resist junk food?
A.Their thoughts are consistent.
B.Their brains are still immature.
C.They don't care about risks.
D.They are more anxious in life.
3.What were adolescents in Felice Jacka's study asked to do?
A.Evaluate others' answers.
B.Share workout routines.
C.Eat large amounts of junk food.
D.Report their diets and feelings.

Passage 10
The boss turned down a raise and gave it to his staff instead. Tony
Bennett, the head coach of the University of Virginia (UVA) men's
basketball team, was offered a large pay raise after his team won the
national championship in 2019.But to everyone's surprise, he turned the
offer down and requested that the money go to his staff and the basketball
program instead. What's more, he donated $500,000 to the basketball
players.
The boss bought an employee a new car. On the night before Alabama student
Walter Carr's first day at Bellhops, a moving company, his car broke down.
Nobody could give him a ride to work, so Carr decided to walk the 20-mile
distance overnight. After seven hours, he arrived right on time. When the
boss heard about Carr's unbelievable story, he drove from Tennessee to
Alabama to give the young student a Ford Escape.
The boss forgave a costly mistake. A diner at a British steakhouse had a
stroke of luck when he was accidentally served an expensive bottle of red
wine. Instead of blaming the server who made the mistake, as some might,
the boss decided to laugh it off. “To the customer who accidentally got
given a bottle of wine which is £4,500 last night, hope you enjoyed your
evening!” the steakhouse tweeted. “To the server who accidentally gave it
away, cheer up! We love you anyway.”
The boss gave his staff a free trip to Hawaii. Imagine drinking a cocktail
on a sunny, warm beach with 500 of your closest employees. That's how Brian
Scudamore, the founder and CEO of home service provider O2E Brands, chose
to spend his vacation in 2017.Back in 2012, Scudamore promised his北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版

Passage 11
Allan T. Demaree, a retired executive editor of the Fortune magazine,
gladly makes donations to Princeton University, his alma mater. His son,
who also went to Princeton, points to its endowment (捐赠基金) of $15.8
billion, and will not give it a penny.
“Why give money to an institution that can seemingly live off its interest
when other very deserving entities need money to function tomorrow?” asked
the son, Heath Demaree, a professor at Case Western Reserve University who
instead donates to Virginia Tech, where he was a graduate student. His
question captures how the wealth collected by elite universities like
Princeton through soaring endowments over the past decade has widened the
divide between a small group of dramatically wealthy universities and all
others.
The result is that America's already stratified (形成阶层的) system of
higher education is becoming ever more so, and the gap is creating all
sorts of tensions as the less wealthy colleges try to compete. Even state
universities are going into fund-raising overdrive and trying to increase
endowments to catch up.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
The wealthiest colleges can tap their endowments to give considerable
financial aid to families earning $180,000 or more. They can tempt star
professors with high salaries and hard-to-get apartments. They are starting
advanced new research laboratories, expanding their campuses and putting up
architecturally notable buildings.
Higher education has always been stratified, but the differences were never
as large as today. The last decade brought a sea of changes, as skilled
money managers hired by the universities moved their portfolios(投资组合)
into high-performing investments, and endowments skyrocketed.
Until recently, top public research universities could rely on enough
public subsidy(补贴) to hold their own, when the taxpayer money was
combined with tuition and fund-raising. But the world is changing.
The University of California, Berkeley has a $3 billion endowment, but it
is stretched across 34,000 students. And with state budget cuts
approaching, Robert Birgeneau, its president, fears he will no longer be
able to attract the best professors and students.
“It will cost less for a student from a family with an income of $180,000
to go to Harvard than for a student with a family income of $90,000 to go
to Berkeley,” he said, taking into account Harvard's recent decision to
give more financial aid to families earning up to $180,000 annually.
1.What do we learn about Heath Demaree?
A.He donated to Virginia Tech.
B.He donated as much as his father.
C.He donated to Princeton University.
D.He donated to Case Western Reserve University.
2.What is said about state universities?
A.They are expanding their campuses.
B.They are raising funds to increase endowments.
C.They manage to attract elite professors and students.
D.They are starting sophisticated new research laboratories.
3.What can we learn about top public research universities at present?北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
A.They cannot hold their own just with state support.
B.The taxpayer money is combined with tuition and fund-raising.
C.Despite possible state budget cuts, they do not need more endowment.
D.They can depend on enough public subsidy to lure professors and students.

Passage 12
Have you ever wondered if you see the same colours as other people?
Most people know what blue is when they see it. They see the colour and
call it “blue” because they were taught the word and associated it with
what they saw. But how do you know what you see as blue isn't someone
else's red?
The ability to perceive colours is down to receptors in our eyes. Light
waves hit these receptors and they react depending on which colour the
light is, sending signals to the brain. The brain then decodes these
signals to determine which colour light the eyes are receiving. Some北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
people's receptors are more developed than others. People with weaker
receptors usually have colour blindness. The inability of the receptor to
interpret the light waves correctly means that some people cannot tell
different shades of a colour.
In the past, most scientists would argue that everyone saw colours in the
same way. However, research was conducted on monkeys, in which they were
injected with a virus affecting their receptors. This enabled them to
understand more colours than usual and brought an interesting discovery.
Normally monkeys can only see blue and green, but the virus allowed monkeys
to see red. The neurons (神经元) in their brains adapted to be able to
understand new colours, which might mean the neurons in our brains are not
instinctive (本能的) to automatically understand which colour is which.
This implies that our brains and neurons may adapt depending on our
stimuli(刺激) during the developmental phase. Colour could be a very
personal experience, unique to everyone.
So, the next time you talk about your favourite colour, just remember if
yours is blue and your friend says red, you might actually be thinking
about the same colour. What if everyone in the world has the same favourite
colour, but just calls it different names?
1.What does the underlined word “perceive” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Explain. B.See.
C.Analyze. D.Track.
2.Why do some people have colour blindness?
A.They can see many shades of some colours.
B.Their receptors fail to send signals to their brains.
C.There are not enough light waves hitting their receptors.
D.The receptors in their eyes are not well developed.
3.What can we learn from the experiment on monkeys?
A.Monkeys can only see two colours—green and blue.
B.The neurons in monkeys' brain can instinctively distinguish colours.
C.Brains and neurons can be stimulated to recognize new colours.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
D.The neurons in humans' brain work differently from monkeys'.

Alibaba Group will extend its digital operating system to 1.5 million
small neighborhood stores in China. Under the so-called Plan W, Alibaba is
looking to develop a number of smaller shops with daily revenues (收入) of
over 10,000 yuan in lower-tier cities, townships and villages.
The latest move falls under Alibaba's Ling Shou Tong (LST) business unit,
which connects the millions of street stands in China and improves
marketing, delivery, and inventory (库存) management abilities through
digital means. The data-backed retail (零售) management system has been
designed to digitize the business of millions of mom-and-pop stores and
neighborhood convenience stores.
Alibaba will offer a smart point-of-sale system, some 10,000 new product
offerings, and a variety of online touchpoints to help users access offline
stores virtually. Alibaba intends to help these mom-and-pop stores double
or even triple their revenue, and they can sell more efficiently, and get
flexibility to refill stocks based on their changing needs.
Its POS machine performs every function throughout the retail process and
provides real-time suggestions. For instance, it would send out alerts on北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版

enhance the store's profitability. The machine also collects average
selling price for a certain product in the nearby areas, thereby giving
reference to shop owners to make informed pricing decisions.
Furthermore, an inventory monitoring system is in operation to give real-
time advice on product display. This is coupled with a three-layer
warehouse system covering 200 cities and townships to ensure the timely
delivery of products, based on geographical shopping preferences that are
present in Alibaba's data book.
Despite slow consumption growth at home and abroad, one in every five small
shops surveyed by LST reported they have witnessed positive revenue growth.
Average daily revenues surpassed 7,000 yuan, compared with the 3,000 yuan
to 5,000 yuan range for average offline stores.
1.Why does Alibaba come up with Plan W?

Passage 1
Emergencies are scary, but there is now a new smart ring on the market
that will quickly call for help when you need it most. Meet Nimb, a ring
that includes a panic button. It lets you send emergency alerts (警报) to
preset contacts from its mobile app with the touch of a thumb. Whether you
are being attacked or experiencing a serious health problem, Nimb will help
keep you safe and sound.
Smart Rings to the Rescue
The story behind the development with this new technology is unique and
touching. In 2010, Kathy Roma, who is the co-founder, was violently
attacked by a complete stranger and was on the brink of death. She suffered
multiple stab wounds in a safe neighborhood, just a few feet away from a
police station. Her saving grace wasn't just her fight and drive to
survive, but the call for help.
Since then, she has been searching to find a way for others to have a
voice when they're in need of help and has been a driving force in the
development of this new technology. And Nimb is easy to use. All you need
to do when you are in trouble is press its button for three seconds and an
instant message will be sent to your contacts. Your contacts will get北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版

features. The ring is compatible (兼容的) with Bluetooth 4+, iOS 7+ and
Android 4+. It is also equipped with a rechargeable LiPo Battery that will
last about two weeks, and is designed to withstand water and dust.
Nimb:Stay Safe in Style
What makes this smart ring extra special is that it is cool and
futuristic looking. It comes in two colors:stealth black and classic white.
The ring is available in US ring sizes 4—12, which means you can wear it
on any of your fingers. There's no doubt that this new technology will be a
hit on the market:everyone wants to have that extra piece of mind when it
comes to health and safety. Nimb retails for $129.

Passage 3
Skillshare is a video lesson app which has become highly popular
nowadays. It will likely to appeal more to older kids (aged 14+) since
classes focus primarily on professional development with topics like
digital design, technology and marketing. There are also plenty of art and
music classes for more creative learners. Read the developer's privacy
policy for details about how your kid's information is collected, used and
shared, and any choices you may have in the matter, and this privacy policy
applies to all users.
What is it about?
Skillshare has a large database of online lessons taught by industry
experts. Kids can search for a class by topic or by entering key words.
Each class contains a series of video lessons that are taught as a lecture.
Some classes have only a few lessons, while others have 10 or more. In
fact, one guitar class has more than 100 lessons. Many classes include
projects, and most end with a brief Final Thoughts lesson to sum up the
content of the class. There's a review section where users can leave
advice. Kids can watch the lessons within that class directly from the app.
They can also save classes to watch later, and any classes they begin are
automatically saved to a watch list. Many classes are offered in the free
version of the app, and a paid version gives users access to a much more
extensive class list—more than 28,000 lessons.
Is it any good?
All the teachers in the app are passionate about their work, so it's an
excellent way to foster the same passion in your kids, as long as there is
a genuine interest in the content being offered.

As part of our mission to inspire the next generation of scientists,
inventors and engineers, the Science Museum Group (SMG) has launched an
exciting new online game—Total Darkness.
Over the last year we have been developing Total Darkness with the aim of
creating an experience that can have a positive impact on people's
attitudes towards STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), as
well as having a focus on self-reflection, rather than asking players to
recall specific facts or concepts.
Total Darkness is a digital storytelling experience which encourages young
people to recognise how the skills they use every day relate to STEM and
can help them develop their confidence in science thinking. The game
invites the player to solve a mysterious power cut in their hometown. The
game puts players in control, allowing their choices and decisions to guide
them through the story.
a torch
As the player navigates through the darkened streets of the town, equipped
only with a torch, they will face various challenges. Using their
curiosity, communication skills and creative problem solving, they will
discover new theories about what might have caused the blackout(停电;断电).
But with every step their torch fades, and the player must solve the
mystery before the battery runs out.
The player's choices and actions throughout the game will get them
curiosity, creativity or communication points. At the end, the skills the
player has used will be revealed along with their science style, showing
how they could put their skills into action in the real world.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版

Passage 6
ATV
Ida Nelson and her sister were relaxing and enjoying themselves in the
sauna (桑拿室) when she heard a series of long low sounds from a small
airplane circling the nearby airport.
It was 11:30 at night in the Alaskan village of Igiugig, population about
70, and, as she told the reporter, “Any time a plane flies over that late,
you know something is wrong.”
Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw
the problem:The airport's runway lights were out.
Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her ATV, and floored it to the
airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights
manually.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
“Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just
light up,” Nelson told KTOO out of Juneau. Not this time. Meanwhile, she
and the pilot learned of the plane's urgent mission:It was a medevac (医疗
救护直升机), there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest
hospital, 280 miles away in Anchorage.
Nelson had a plan. Driving her ATV to the end of the runway, she shone her
headlights for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn't enough. More
light was needed, so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village—32
of them.
Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers
still in pajamas (睡衣). Following the direction from the medevac pilot,
the cars lined up on one side of the runway.
The medevac made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed
safely. The young patient was loaded onto the aircraft, and the plane
immediately took off again. Her illness was never publicly revealed, but
she has since been released from the hospital.
In a world filled with uncertainty, the little community's positive
activism was a big deal. Not so much for Nelson. As she told the reporter,

Passage 8
The Best and Worst Things to Buy in March
Frozen food
Grocery store ads aren't the only places to find deals on freezer-section
treats. To take advantage of the deepest discounts, combine coupons (优惠
券)from sponsoring brands, such as Dole, Green Giant and Tyson Foods, with
grocery store sales. Plus, look for printable savings on Coupons.com and
EasyHomeMeals.com. Brands participating in National Frozen Food Month will
offer more than 180,000 coupons that make frozen food among the best things
to buy in March.
Boxed chocolates
If you desire to give a gift to a friend in March, consider chocolate. Two
minor holidays in March provide the perfect excuse: National Chocolate北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
Caramel Day on March 19 and National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day on March
24.You can discover chocolate deals online as well as in stores. Head to
sites like RetailMeNot.com to find discount coupons for boxed chocolate
savings of 10 percent or more.
New cars
With the latest car models filling dealers' lots, you'll have a hard time
finding discounted models from the year before. Car dealerships are less
motivated to offer steep discounts from March through May. Instead, plan to
buy your car during the fall or winter. You should also research the auto
you want at TrueCar before heading for the dealership. The site offers
information on what people in your area paid for vehicles equipped with the
options you want.
Spring clothing
When warm weather makes you want to head outdoors, resist the urge to do so
wearing the latest fashions. You won't find March deals on swimsuits,
Easter dresses or other spring items. To find discounts on clothes of this
spring, hold off until the Memorial Day weekend. You can also look for
online and in-store savings at Amazon, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and other
retailers.

A.Frozen food and new cars.
B.Boxed chocolates and new cars.

Passage 9
Every year from March to October, Christian Moullec, also known as
“Birdman”, takes to the skies aboard his adapted light aircraft. However,
the 58-year-old Frenchman's daily 30-minute flight is not just to enjoy the
impressive views, but to guide flocks (鸟群) of lesser white-fronted geese
(小白额雁) through safe migration paths which the birds can teach future
generations.
His deed began in 1995 when he noticed their declining population in the
wilds of Lapland, Sweden. To prevent their numbers from dropping further,
Moullec tried to get the threatened species to follow him along migration
routes that would protect them from bird hunters.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
However, getting grown geese to follow his lead proved challenging. As
young geese imitate and follow whomever they view as their parent, Moullec
decided to raise the geese from birth.
To help raise funds and awareness of his job to protect not just the geese
but birds worldwide, Moullec often allows paying tourists to join him on
the 30-minute-long flights aboard his aircraft. In addition to the trained
birds flying alongside them, visitors, who come from as far as a 15-hour
plane flight away, are treated to a variety of crane and goose species as
well as breathtaking views of castles and cities.
He often brings his camera along for the flights, capturing photos not just
for their beauty, but for what they describe. Moullec believes the use of
agricultural chemicals has done harm to wild European birds, with more than
a third disappearing in the last 30 years. “It's a disaster,”he said.
“My beautiful images with flying birds should be used to tell this
story.”
1.Why does “Birdman” always fly to the sky on his aircraft?
A.To observe lesser white-fronted geese along their migration routes.
B.To follow lesser white-fronted geese through safe migration paths.
C.To take visitors to operate his adapted aircraft.
D.To guide lesser white-fronted geese through safe paths during the
migration.

Passage 10
Cycling has become more popular in the UK recently for a number of reasons.
One of those must be the British cycling success at both the Beijing
Olympic Games in 2008 and the London Olympic Games in 2012.Sir Chris Hoy
won three gold medals in Beijing and another two in London. He and Jason
Kenny are the most successful Olympic cyclists of all time. The UK also won
the Tour de Frances six times.
Cycling is not just a sport though, and Tony is just one of the many people
who like to cycle long distances because they want to enjoy the natural
beauty of the UK. He belongs to Sustrans, a volunteer organization created
in the 1970s. Sustrans has combined quieter roads and disused railway
tracks to create the National Cycle Network of cycle-friendly routes.
Cyclists follow these routes not only because they can raise money for
charity, but also because they enjoy the scenery across England and like to
get away from the busy city life.
Connie lives and works in London and, like half a million Londoners every
day,she travels to and from work by bike. Since the introduction of the
congestion charge where drivers pay to bring a car into the center of
London during working hours in 2003, the capital city has seen an almost 50
percent increase in the number of people traveling by bike. Cycling to work
takes the same amount of time as it would by bus or tube. Connie says that
cycling is cheaper and keeps her fit, too.
Nigel is a campaigner. In addition to traveling to and from work by
bicycle, doing some charity rides and generally enjoying cycling, Nigel
runs a local campaigning group and helps organize the “critical
commute”—where cyclists gather every last Friday of the month and cycle北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版

Passage 11
If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart
disease or cancer, a group of health experts want you to know that those
vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer.
The US Preventive Services Task Force came to this conclusion after
reviewing dozens of studies.
Nearly half of adults in the US take at least one vitamin or mineral
supplement on a regular basis. These pills are advertised as a way to
promote general health. In some cases, manufacturers promote them as cancer
fighters and heart protectors.
Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes suggest that oxidative (氧化的)
stress contributes to diseases like cancer and heart disease. If so, there
is a reason to believe that antioxidants—including beta-carotene, vitamins
A, C, and E—could be useful as preventive medicines.
But when the Task Force examined the medical evidence on vitamins, it found
“inadequate (不充分的) evidence” to support the claims that vitamin and
mineral supplements benefit healthy adults.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
“Cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and cancer have a significant health
impact in America, and we all want to find ways to prevent these
diseases,” Dr. Virginia Moyer, who heads the Task Force, said in a
statement. But so far, she added, the medical evidence does not show that
taking vitamins is helpful in this regard.
However, the Task Force did find “adequate evidence” that people with a
raised risk of lung cancer actually increase their risk further by taking
beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A.
The Task Force recommendations of taking vitamins regularly apply to
healthy adults aged 50 and older who don't have “special nutritional
needs”. The advice does not apply to children, women who are pregnant or
may become pregnant, people with chronic illnesses, or people who have to
take supplements because they can't get all their essential nutrients from
their diet.
1.Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes find out .
A.ample evidence that taking vitamins is helpful in treating lung cancer
B.cardiovascular disease spreads very fast in America
C.oxidative stress can lead to heart disease and cancer
D.people must take vitamins on a regular basis
2.What can we conclude from the Task Force's findings?
A.Scientists want to control cardiovascular disease.
B.In some regard, taking vitamins is not useful.
C.Manufacturers cannot produce medical-use vitamins.
D.Vitamins must be useful to prevent cancer and heart disease.
3.Who can take vitamins regularly according to the advice of the Task
Force?
A.A 60-year-old healthy worker.
B.A 15-year-old boy with short-sightedness.
C.A 34-year-old pregnant lady.
D.A 40-year-old man who never eats vegetables or fruits.

Passage 12北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
On a recent day, Katie Baldwin took a break from work to talk about
moving from a wealthy neighborhood near New York City to an organic farm on
Long Island. “Farming for where I grew up was a very unusual career
choice,” said the 32-year-old American,“but everybody belongs to the land
in their own way. None of us should feel separate from it.”
Katie was raised in a town outside New York where most people never thought
about working on a farm. Today, Katie grows potatoes, wheat and other crops
at Quail Hill, a property in Amagansett, New York.
In the United States, organic farming is a growing industry. Women operate
some of the best-known organic farms on Long Island. Women make up a little
more than 37 percent of all organic farmers nationwide. The information
comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Experts predict
women's share in farming is likely to continue to grow.
The new young farmers choose organic farming with their desire to have an
influence on society. Katie said,“We are choosing it to protect natural
resources for future generations, to fight climate change, and to feed our
community good food.”
New York has about 1,000 certified organic farms, making it the third
largest in the country, the USDA says. These farms make up nearly four
percent of the state's farmland, compared with a national average of around
0.6 percent.
Although organic farming is growing quickly, it comes with high labor costs
and sometimes smaller harvests than commercial farming. So it can be a
difficult business for new farmers. “When I look now at the starting of
the farm,it seems really audacious,” Katie Baldwin said. “But in that
environment in 2008, everybody had lost their jobs and there weren't jobs.
So, it didn't feel strange to start something.”

paragraph?

Passage 13
A 96-year-old woman, believed to be the oldest working nurse in the
country, has retired.
Last week, Florence Rigney, better known to her friends as “SeeSee”,
retired as a nurse at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital after working for
over 70 years. Throughout her career, which began as a student nurse,
Rigney worked consistently, only taking a “break” from nursing to raise
her two children.
Working as a nurse has kept Rigney very active. She's traveled across the
country as an operating nurse and even logged up to three miles on her
treadmill from walking during her shifts. “I don't like to sit around—
I've always got to have something to do. That's my nature,” Rigney said in
a statement, adding that she had always wanted to become a nurse. “I love
to interact with patients and give them the help that I can provide.”
Rigney planned on retiring once at age 65, but after six months she decided
that she needed the job to stay active and keep her mind sharp. Now as she
officially retired, the hospital noted that Rigney planned on spending most
of her time enjoying family and friends. “Even working into her nineties,
she has never been one to slow down. Some of her colleagues joked that they
had to sprint to keep up with her,” said Laureen Driscoll, president of
the hospital. “SeeSee's continued to be a dedicated nurse and an
incredible resource to her colleagues and community. It's humbling to stop
and think about the thousands and thousands of lives she's cared for.
Everyone at MultiCare thanks Rigney for her unmatched dedication and
service, and we're proud to honor her by supporting future nurses,” she
continued.
As she said goodbye to her beloved job, Rigney offered some advice to other
nurses. “Don't ever think that you know it all,” she noted in the北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版

Passage 14
Depression Discussions
Alison Malmon was a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania when she got
a call from her mother that would change her life: Her fun, outgoing older
brother, Brian, had killed himself.
When Malmon returned to school after Brian's funeral(葬礼) that spring of
2000, she was still extremely sad. But when she looked for help on campus,
there was no place to turn to. “Back then, students weren't encouraged to
talk about their mental health. I started reflecting on the fact that there
was an enormous need to get that conversation going,” says Malmon.
She was only 19 and had no experience with mental health issues, but that
didn't stop her from launching Open Minds at Penn. Now, 20 years later and
with a new name Active Minds, it is the largest young adult mental health
advocacy organization in America, with more than 550 chapters at high
schools and colleges. “What I'm most inspired by is that my generation and
the generations coming behind me are taking mental health as a social
justice issue,” says Malmon. “Our tools are changing not only their
campuses, but also their families.”
The mental health statistics on college campuses are alarming. The American
College Health Association's 2019 National College Health Assessment found
that 45% of students reported feeling so depressed in the previous 12
months that it was difficult to function; 66% felt great anxiety; and 13%
seriously considered taking their own lives. So Active Minds' peer-to-peer
education techniques are more important than ever.北京曲一线图书策划有限公司 2023版《5年高考3年模拟》A版
“I wanted to educate students about the issues, about the signs and
symptoms(症状), and about where—on campus and off campus and online—they
can get help for free. Active Minds chapters empower young adults to speak
openly about mental health so that everybody who needs help gets it as
early as possible. We can't make it uncomfortable for students to come
forward with their stories,” she says, “because that's how we're going to
have more students graduate and go on to become productive members of
society, and not feel so ashamed like my brother did.”
