After little Julie lost her parents, she lived with Aunt Clara, who worked day and night to
support her and her own daughter Mira. As the school prom (舞会) approached, both Julie and
Mira dreamed of buying beautiful dresses for the occasion. However, Clara’s limited budget posed
a challenge, as she could only afford one dress.
To determine who would receive the dress, Clara suggested the girls draw lots (抽签).
Unfortunately, luck was not on Julie’s side, but she remained optimistic. “Don’t worry about me,”
Julie smiled. “I’ll figure something out.”
Julie reached under her bed and pulled out a box containing money from Grandma.
Grandma loved Julie and Mira very much. Every year, Grandma would send cash gifts to both of
them. Julie had carefully saved her money and now had enough to buy a prom dress. With
excitement and anticipation, she purchased a beautiful black dress, imagining being the prom
queen at the prom.
The following Sunday morning, Aunt Clara left for work early. When Julie woke up, shewas shocked that the dress she had hung over the nearby chair was gone! She looked out of the
window and froze in horror at the sight of the family dog tearing it to pieces.
She screamed as she ran toward the dog. “What have you done to my dress?” Mira soon
learned of the situation and rushed to help Julie to remove her dress caught between the dog’s
teeth. However, it was already completely ruined and unable to be repaired. Julie felt heartbroken
at the thought of not being able to afford another dress.
Lost and unsure of what to do, Julie went to her grandma’s house with the remains of her
dress, seeking comfort and advice. When Grandma answered the door, Julie cried and said what
had happened. Grandma comforted her and offered a glimmer of hope. “I can help you with your
dress,” she smiled. “Follow me."
Grandma, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病),walked slowly and led Julie into the
dining room. There, she removed the cover from her old sewing machine and instructed Julie to
open the top drawer of the dresser, where an abundance of colorful cloth was stored.
Paragraph 1:
Julie said, “But I’m afraid that you couldn’t sew anymore. You know, your hands.”

一篇完整的短文。
Jay, 24, got home from work shortly after midnight. Then, suddenly, a horror-filled scream
ripped through the still night. He rushed outside and saw flames lighting the sky half a mile away.
Hurriedly, he called the fire department and rushed out to check the situation.
Seconds later, Jay was fishtailing his car on the main road. The fire raged at a small hillside
complex of mobile homes. Jay slid the car to a stop and sprinted up a steep lane toward the
reddening glow. Reaching the hilltop, he saw that a 70-foot-long trailer (房车) was on fire. A
young woman in torn nightclothes was running wildly back and forth, jumping to smash at the 6-
foot-high windows with her hands. “Dear God!” she screamed. “My family is dying!”
Jay felt a moment of panic. He seemed to be the only person there to help. Never had he
seen such a fire! Flames were leaping out of broken windows at the far end of the trailer and
winding along the roof; the roaring, crackling noises grew louder by the second. He grabbed the
woman by the shoulders. “What happened?” he shouted.
Barely coherent, Cindy told him she had escaped through one of the master bedroom
windows. Her husband, Leonard, had gone for their two children: 22-month-old Ryan and 6-week-
old Angela. He was supposed to hand them out to her from the bedroom. But, seconds later,
flames had burst from the kitchen and living room windows. Cindy began crying miserably.
“Where are they?” Jay yelled. Cindy pointed to the end section of the trailer, where thick, black
smoke poured from the windows.
From the time he was old enough to play sports, Jay had learned to battle the odds. As a
Little Leaguer, he led his underdog team to the state championship. And in tiny St. Maries, his
courage had earned him townspeople’s respect. Always, Jay recalled the words of his father: “The
word can’t never did anything for anybody. You can do it! Never stop trying, son!”

3.(2024·山西阳泉·三模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之
构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a cold, snowy evening. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing
but his destination —the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago he saw figurines (小塑像) of
Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He has been walking the
neighbor’s dog ever since then to earn money to fulfil his little dream. He was so excited and
barely noticing the world around him. Maybe that’s why he tripped over the legs of a homeless
woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall. He said “sorry” and moved
on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor,
Captain America, Iron Man, and many more — all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding
like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
“You like these, true believer?”
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face.
“Y-yes,… Yes, they’re awesome! ”answered Tommy. “They’re strong and fast and help
other people a lot ...” the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superherotoo.”
“Then become one!” said the old man.
“How?” Tommy asked in surprise “I don’t have any superpowers.”
“And why would you need them?” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy’s
face, he put his hands on Tommy’s arms. “Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a
disabled husband? She has been working hard and taking care of him for years. I have never heard
a word of complaint from her. And this person...”he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the
shop. “He’s a firefighter; he’s saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous
the situation seems to be.”
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don’t need a superpower to be a
hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the
heart.”

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I wasa cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play
with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became
quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my
responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of
having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although
Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong
wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin
rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom,
seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the
storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that
our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our
neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her
yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the
time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen
tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how
heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,”
and my family started to think about how we could help.

Sharing New Year with Strangers
I come from a large multicultural family, spread out across the globe. Despite being found
in distant corners of the world, we’re a tight-knit family that makes an effort to stay close and
keep in touch. New Year has always been a special time for us and a chance for us all to come
together, no matter where in the world we might be.
My aunt Samantha, known affectionately by everyone in the family as Mantha, loved New
Year and always went out of her way to make it cosy and magical for everyone around her.
Mantha was kind, fun and full of energy so it wasn’t hard to get into the New Year spirit when she
was around.
This year was no exception. Mantha drove three hours from her house in Bournemouth to
visit everyone two weeks before New Year and to drop off presents to her friends still in the area.
We chatted merrily about our plans, laughed at how organized Mantha was — presents already
bought and wrapped and the freezer full ahead of the big day — and kissed goodbye when it was
time to leave. So just several days before New Year, when Mantha’s son called us saying
Samantha had passed away suddenly at home, none of us could quite believe it. I’d only been
messaging her the day before, sharing voice notes like we always liked to do.
Mantha had had a blood clot (血块) that had unfortunately travelled to her lung and despite
the paramedic’s best efforts, they were unable to save my beloved, fun, wonderful aunt.
So close to New Year, none of us felt like celebrating and we decided we’d have a quiet dayat home, surrounded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law, Vera, told us about some
colleagues of hers who’d just arrived in the UK far away from friends and family. And they were
eager to experience a proper English New Year.

It was about eight o'clock in the morning. I was on my way to work in a subway.
Nobody had expected something unusual would happen later and everyone was doing their
usual. Sitting next to me, a middle-aged gentleman with glasses enjoyed reading newspaper
leisurely. On my right, a young woman with a suitcase and a baby took a scarf out of her suitcase
and made her baby a nest, so that it could lie more comfortably. Shortly after the train set off,
instead of speeding up, it started to slow down and then came to a stand-still.
Ten minutes passed, though it seemed like half a day. The train didn't move. Had therailway men forgotten all about our existence? Had there been a crash on the line in front? How
serious was the breakdown? We had no means of knowing. However, to anxious people who were
stuck there, I suppose it didn't really matter what it was that had broken down. What they cared
about was when they could get out of the trouble.
Thirty minutes passed. All hope of getting to work on time had long since gone. Had the
train really broken down? Several people thought so. A railway man at last came down the length
of the train to tell us that the power supply had failed and that we were not to worry as they were
working to put it right.
We could not leave the train, as it had stopped in the tunnel (隧道), not at a station. There
was nothing else to do. The faint light of the emergency lamp blurred everything. The weak signal
disabled cell-phones. Besides, the train was getting hot and stuffy (闷的). I even began to wonder
if we were going to stay there for the rest of the day.

The Beautiful Game
I have a favorite footballer. His name is Chris Bush and he is a defender for the National
League team Boreham Wood in Hertfordshire. He’s 31, and he plays in the number 5 shirt, and...
well, I can’t tell you that much more about him, really, because, in general, I struggle to focus
when it comes to football.
My disinterest in “he Beautiful Game” has been lifelong. At primary school, my classmates
spent lunch break playing football, while I was in the library getting kicks from books and
computers. In Games lessons, like all fat kids, I was put “in defence” which involved chatting to
my friends and occasionally pretending to be bothered about where the ball was. I pretended to be
expert in the game, cheering when a goal was scored, although I didn’t understand the rules.
As I got older, I stopped trying to fake it. In fact, I wore my aversion to football as a badge
of honor, a fundamental part of my identity. I didn’t understand why so many people loved this
sport. “It’s only a game!” I’d tell Dad, as he excitedly urged me to watch the game. When a big
game was on, I’d go shopping instead of watching the game like most of the people around me.
But, occasionally when meeting a friend’s father, I’d meet questions like “Who do you support?”
And I would feel my heart sink, having no idea how to answer that.
This attitude of mine had stopped me from hours of conversation, and even entire
friendships with people that I might otherwise have enjoyed. I couldn’t change the fact that I
found football boring, but was coming to regret that I was an outsider. I never had the chance to go
and watch a game and sometimes I would wonder what it would be like to watch a game and feel
the atmosphere of the fans.

“I can’t decide!” Carter told his mom.
“You have to decide.” Mom said. “I think you should go to Tyler’s party. He invited you
first and you told him that you were going to come. Besides, it will be at the lake! You love to
swim.”
“I know. But, Josh is having a go-kart party (卡丁车派对)! We are all meeting at his house
and then going to the go-kart track! That would be amazing!”
“Carter, I told you what I think you should do. But you’re old enough to start making
decisions on your own.”
Four days later, Carter was leaving the house for Josh’s party. He never did tell Josh or
Tyler that he would not be attending their party. He meant to tell Tyler, but he felt so bad about it.
Tyler was his best friend. They met in second grade and have been best friends ever since. But go-
karts! How could he possibly turn down the chance to drive go-kart around a racetrack?
As Carter rode his bike toward Josh’s house, he could feel the sun on his back. It wasalready a warm morning. A perfect day to be at the lake, he thought with a little regret. But there
would be other days to swim at the lake. Today was go-kart day! He smiled and pedaled harder.
He was a little early, so he expected to see a few parents dropping off their sons. As he rode up
Josh’s driveway, he was surprised to see there were no cars parked in the driveway. He laid his
bike down in the grass, walked to the door, and rang the doorbell.
The door opened. It was Josh’s teenage sister, Kayla.
“What do you want?” she asked.
“I’m here for the party. Josh’s birthday party.”
“No one’s here. They already left.”
“But it was supposed to start at ten! It’s not ten yet!” Carter said, throwing his hands out,
palms up, in confusion.

On my son Andrew's 15th birthday, I took him to a shoe shop near our home in Toronto to
get a pair of shoes. Andrew is nonspeaking autistic (自闭症) and prefers to go shopping when it's
not busy.
Andrew got new shoes for his 15th birthday. As we headed toward the door, I told the sales
assistants it was Andrew's 15th birthday today. "Happy birthday and have fun," the sales assistants
replied.
Instead of having Andrew point to the "thank you" symbol on the picture chart he carried
with him, I paused and held up his letterboard.
For ten years, we have carried around a picture chart, which Andrew uses to communicate.
It contains images that match his most important and most used words: people, places, food,
greetings and activities. Over the years, neighbourhood kids, friends, cousins and classmates have
studied the pictures and the strips at the top of the chart that contain even more "representations"
of Andrew's life.
Years ago, we discovered that Andrew could communicate more than his basic needs
through the use of a letterboard—by pointing to individual letters on an alphabet grid (网格) to
spell out words. It's a simple but profound tool. We have attached a letterboard to the back of his
picture chart to spare us the trouble of carrying multiple charts and boards.
Using the letterboard requires significant time and effort for Andrew, but we persevere (坚
持) because we know it gives him an opportunity to share more of who he is than what can be
conveyed through basic pictures and words.
And so, instead of rushing out of the shoe shop door. I held up the letterboard and asked
Andrew how he'd like to respond.

Every Saturday, Bibi hung out at her grandma’s laundry and dry-cleaning store while her
mother went to work. Bibi loved being with her grandma, but she wanted to do more than just
draw and read.
“How about I give you a hand with the chores?” Bibi offered.
“But you are too small. Why don’t you draw for a little while?” Grandma suggested,
“You’re such a good artist.”
“But I want to help you.” Bibi sighed.
Bibi was too short to reach the tall rod that held the fresh clothes in neat alphabetical order.
Grandma didn’t want her handling the hot presser or the iron. She could slide the stiff cardboard
into the starched (浆洗过的) shirts, but that was about it. “Why don’t you draw a picture of more
customers coming in?” Grandma joked. “Maybe that would help!”
Bibi went outside. It was a crisp fall day. The last leaves were starting their lazy drift to the
ground. She spotted her neighbour, Stephanie, across the street. Stephanie was painting big letters
on the window of the hardware store. “Stephanie! You are going to get in trouble.” Stephanie
laughed. “The high-school cheer-leading team is painting windows for our homecoming football
game next weekend. Some of the shop owners said we could.”
“Does that paint wash off?” Bibi asked. “Yep. It’s just cornflour, soap, and food coloring,”
said Stephanie. Bibi saw other kids from the high school painting designs on window up and down
the street. GO, TIGERS said the window of the nail salon in huge letter. HEAR US ROAR! saidthe window of the coffee shop. “I can help you!” Bibi called to Stephanie, her heart pounding. “I

embarrassed and wondered how she could do this to me? I was so angry with my mom and wished

I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become
successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I
left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own.
Then I had kids, too. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my
mom and my past.
This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my

me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye. I screamed at her, “Who are you? I don’t
know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter!” To this, my mom quietly
answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared out of

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. After the reunion, I went

Last year around Halloween, I was invited to participate in a carnival for Tuesday’s Child,
an organization that helps children with cancer. I was asked to attend because I’m on a television
show; I went because I care. I don’t think that most of the kids recognized me as a celebrity. They
just thought of me as a big kid who came to play with them for the day. I think I liked it better that
way.
At the carnival they had all kinds of stands. I was drawn to one in particular because of all
the children that had gathered there. At this stand, anyone who wanted to could paint a square.
Later that square was going to be sewn together with the others, to make a quilt. The quilt would
be presented to a man who had dedicated much of his life to this organization and would soon be
retiring.
They gave everyone fabric paints in bright beautiful colors and asked the kids to paint
something that would make the quilt beautiful. As I looked around at all the squares, I saw pink
hearts and bright blue clouds, beautiful orange sunrises and green and purple flowers. The pictures
were all bright, positive and uplifting. All except for one.
The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty and lifeless. It
lacked the bright brilliant colors that his fellow artists had used.
At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark.
But when I asked him about it, he said his heart was that color because not only was he very sick,
but his mom was very sick. He said, “There is nothing anyone can do that will help.”

It took a day’s drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in
my father’s car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a
new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there.
My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked
excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life.
Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new
classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew
each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and
wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely. I often spent time alone during breaks
and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the
good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up
conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried
to be friendly, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my
desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex’s

I flipped through an online bidding (拍卖) site one evening: fun containers for houseplants,
old maps original artwork, Santas... “Oh my gosh, Cody! Look!”
My husband looked over my shoulder, “That’s a lot of Santas!” he was surprised,
I found a huge fortune and it was only March! But these Santas came in three plastic bins.
“I don’t know where we could store them all,” I said. “You’d have to go with me to pick them up
—those bins look heavy.” I tried to talk myself out of bidding, but it wasn’t working. “I really
want them,” I admitted.
“You should do what makes you happy,” Cody said.
For years I’d bought at least one Santa figure every year for Christmas. Cody knew that
Santa was a special character for me. When I was growing up, my father played the community
Santa. He was a fireman, and the department sponsored Santa visits at school. My father would
get down from the flashing fire truck with a big “Ho! Ho! Ho!” He’d sit each child on his lap.“What your Christmas wish?” he’d ask, as joyous a she could be. He handed out bags of peanuts,
candy and oranges. Nobody knew the man behind the beard was my father. It was magical!
After the school party, mom would carefully wash dad’s costume. The red and white coat,
hat, white beard and black belt went back into the box. Santa was gone when Christmas night fell.
My father died when I was 19. Since then, I’d bought Santa figures to feel the joy Santa
represented. Maybe that why I kept searching for more of them. By the time our three daughters
were born, we had enough Santas to decorate a whole tree.
I typed in my bid on the site as memories of those Santa visits at school rushed in. I then
imagined how my daughters would react to those bins of Santas.

Since Anna fell on the mattress from the horizontal bar(高低杠) four days before while
doing a somersault (空翻) , she had kept her beautiful and once proud head bent. Now she was
back at the Capital Airport from abroad. Upon entering the lobby, Anna wished she could hide herhead under her collar. She was ashamed to face the people who had come to welcome her right at
the airport, to be interviewed by the reporters, or to meet her sister and brother-in-law. She was
even afraid to see the warm-hearted stewardess—one of her admirers. Each time she went abroad
from the airport, this stewardess would rush up to help her with her luggage. What a shame that
she had absolutely failed!
Two years before, Anna had gone abroad to take part in an international competition for the
first time. Among so many girls who had already won fame abroad, she attracted little attention.
Yet because her mind was kept free of her anxiety about failure, she unexpectedly won two World
Titles. When she returned home that year, she was given an enthusiastic welcome in the same
lobby. Many hands stretched out to her, many camera lenses focused on her. A reporter in glasses
kept pestering her with the question, “What do you like best?” She was wondering how to respond
when she caught sight of a bouquet of flowers. Then she said, “Flowers!” Following her remarks,
bunches of flowers were at once presented out to her, too many for her to hold.
This time when Anna was a little off balance on the horizontal bar, she became so worried
that she lost self-control and fell off. This failure was followed by several more in other events.
