I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a
documentary (纪录片) about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the
country. I love animals, and I felt an urge to go to this fundraising event. However, none of my co-workers would
go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt
restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the
area around the hotel didn’t seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to brave it. I gathered up my wallet and
room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were nearly deserted. I managed to find the street the theater was on,
but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers–very big, tough-
looking bikers.
I’ve known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all
alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night, and there were twenty or so very large men–all wearing insignia (徽章)
that indicated they were in some sort of club–standing before me. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and
my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date of the event?
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered
if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. I finally decided that I would be
safer inside the theater. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Paragraph 1: I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside.Paragraph 2: When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group.
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. My heart sank and I felt a bit
panicked. But I noticed that they were all very orderly. Some were chatting quietly about the dogs they had rescued.
I took a deep breath and found an empty seat as far away from them as possible. I was still a bit nervous but tried to
calm myself down, waiting for the film to start.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. They were here for the
same reason as me - to support the local animal shelters. I felt so ashamed of my initial fear. As the film played, I
saw their efforts in saving the abandoned dogs. They were so passionate and kind. After the film, I went up to them
and apologized for my misjudgment. They just laughed and said it was okay. We even exchanged contact
information to keep in touch about future animal - saving activities.

1. "Don't judge a book by its cover, as those who seem intimidating might have a kind heart."
2. "Appearances can be deceiving, and unexpected kindness may come from the most unlikely people."

5. "We should look beyond appearances to discover the true nature of others, as the bikers' story shows."
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. My heart sank and I felt like I
had walked into a lion's den. They were chatting loudly and seemed to fill every corner of the place. I quickly
found an empty seat in a corner, trying to make myself as inconspicuous as possible. I kept stealing glances at
them, still feeling extremely nervous.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. They were here for the
same reason as I was-to support the animal shelters. They had organized this event to raise funds and awareness for
the abandoned dogs. As I watched them watching the film with such passion and care in their eyes, I felt ashamed
of my initial judgment. I was touched by their love for animals and glad that I hadn't let my fear stop me from
coming.
1.“inconspicuous”:形容词,意为“不显眼的;不引人注意的”,例句“He tried to make himself
inconspicuous in the crowd.”(他试图在人群中让自己不引人注意。)
2.“initial”:形容词,意思是“最初的;开始的”,例如“Her initial reaction was one of shock.”(她最初
1.“only to find there were even more bikers inside”是不定式作结果状语,表示意料之外的结果,生动地
2. “I felt ashamed of my initial judgment.”
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. I froze for a moment, my
palms sweating and my mind racing with all kinds of worst-case scenarios. But since I was already inside, I took a
deep breath and walked slowly towards an empty row, constantly aware of their presence around me.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. It turned out that they
were using their club's influence to advocate for these poor animals. They were the ones who had put a lot of effort
into organizing this fundraising event. Watching them so engrossed in the documentary, I couldn't help but smile. I
was relieved that my unfounded fears had been just that-unfounded. And I was truly inspired by their dedication to
the cause of helping animals.
1. “scenarios”:名词,复数形式,意为“设想;方案;情节”,如“We need to consider different
scenarios before making a decision.”(在做决定之前我们需要考虑不同的设想情况。)
2. “engrossed”:形容词,“全神贯注的;专心致志的”,常用搭配“be engrossed in”,例如“He was
engrossed in reading the book.”(他全神贯注地读那本书。)
1. “I froze for a moment, my palms sweating and my mind racing with all kinds of worst-case scenarios.”
2. “It turned out that they were using their club's influence to advocate for these poor animals.”中“It turned
out that...”
Pumpkin (南瓜)carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In thepumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule
that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-
pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was
the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to
prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m
unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make
perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the
opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my
nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced
into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with
Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when
I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I
pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head
around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding
unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. The air inside the hollow vegetable was full of my
anxious breath. I could hear my sister’s laughter and Jason’s muffled voice talking about cutting the giant thing
open. “No! Not my precious pumpkin!” I protested. Eventually, Dad helped me adjust my body to a more
relaxed position, and pulled the pumpkin gently off my head. Hair in knots, nose and chain covered in pumpkin
flesh, I let out a sigh of relief. That’s when I realized the camera had been rolling the whole time!
The video was posted online the Monday before Halloween.I looked just like a pumpkin head in it.
Embarrassed and a little annoyed, I fled to my room, but Mom stopped me. “You haven’t read the comments
yet.” I scrolled down the screen and marveled at the stories the viewers shared about Halloween. One girl
recalled celebrating it with her brothers and sisters, and thanked us for “bringing her home”. The words brought
warmth to my heart and tears to my eyes. I felt lucky to be a part of this mischievous yet loving family. (171

It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.Jason suggested using a knife to cut
the pumpkin open. I waved my hands wildly in protest at the plan. “Then you need to find a way
of pulling yourself out.” My dad said in a calm, cool voice. His voice settled my nerves. I was conscious that
my nose was acting as an impediment to my escape. With stretching out my face and biting into the pumpkin, I
surmounted the large obstacle and managed to pull my head out. A ripple of excitement ran through us but the
first thing I saw was the camera.
The video was posted online the Monday before Halloween. In the space of a week, it had been viewed
over a million times. It filled Mom with greater astonishment. Rarely had a pumpkin’s video had so many hits
as this one. Dangerous as it is, some viewers’ curiosity was too strong to resist. They left messages describing
the feelings they had while watching it. Some laughed at me, while others praised my parents, who remained
calm throughout. Looking through these reviews, the sunlight peeking through our , Dad’s calm smile reflected

A vacation with my motherI had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother-
loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a
lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a
few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip
approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew
if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books,
games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours
later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving
while Dadslept:” You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and
play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh,
Gosh… I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we
weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some
time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we
could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never
could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorsteps, Mom would have been
delighted. She thinks everyone in the world as as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us.But then we were half an hour
away from the hotel, where the tentwas left behind. Dad recommended buying a new one, while Mom insisted
on our going back to fetch it, saying "Forgetful people like me may lose things repeatedly, so it's unwise to give
up the tent." Finally, we got back the tent and hit the road again. If Mom hadn't been that absent-minded, it
would have saved us the trouble of going back again and again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. One day, towards evening, we
found a great campingsite at the foot of a high mountain. Davidand I helped Dad put up the tent, and Mom was
busy preparing supper. When the setting sun cast an orange light over the mountains, the tent was set up and the
meal was ready. Sitting around the camp fire, we talked and laughed. Every time we mentioned the funny
incidents of the journey a pleasant smile would spread over Mom's face.
处描述了露营过程中对其他陌生人提供帮助,来集中体现nice这一个点);
可以写的角度比较多;
They said it was such a beautiful day that they would remember it forever.(such… that结构)。
one's arrival, then, however, besides, while等。
One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The
envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find
some information. Then I saw the date-1990, and the signature-Beatrice. The letter was written several decades
ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the
letter. The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, “Young man, this letter was the last
contact I ever had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my
brother is two years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him,” she said and tears
began to well up in her eyes. “Mother is waiting for him to come back home.”
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the
wallet, and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, “Yes, that's
mine! It must have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon.”
“I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet.” I said. The smile on his face suddenly
disappeared. He asked, “You read that letter?” “Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read.” I replied. He
suddenly became excited. “Beatrice? You know where she is? How is she? Please tell me,” he begged. “She'sfine. She has been looking for you.” I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, “Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her.”
Henry and I took the elevator (电梯) down to Beatrice's room. I walked over to her. “Beatrice,” I said
softly, pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. “Do you know the man?”

“I will have revenge(复仇) on him, and make him regret what he did to me,” said Philip to himself, his
face red with anger. Stephen, who happened at that moment to walk past and hear him talking to himself.
“Who is that you want to take revenge on?” asked Stephen. Philip looked at his friend and said, “You
remember my new ball given by my father? Look! It is punctured! It was farmer Robinson’s son who did this!”
Stephen asked him why young Robinson had ruined it. “I was walking and kicking my ball.” Philip
replied, “By accident, when I was opposite the gate, my ball bumped over a bucket of water left in the pathway
by him.”“He came up and began to yell at me. I assured him that what I had done was an accident, and that I was
terribly sorry for it. I also offered to fetch another bucket of water for him. But despite all I had said, he took a
nail out of his pocket and twisted it into the ball, as you see. I will make him pay for this.”
“Honestly speaking,” said Stephen, “he is already punished for what he has done, because nobody likes
him and he often walks around alone. He is just a lonely and miserable boy. This will be enough revenge for
you.”
“But the ball is my favorite gift and I enjoy playing with it so much…” murmured Philip.
“Now Philip,” said Stephen, “I think you can act better than him in terms of getting revenge. I will tell
you what happened to him not long ago.”
“A while ago he saw a bee hovering about a flower. He caught the bee and was going to pull off its wings
for fun. The bee, of course, stung him. The pain made him so angry that, like you, he decided to get revenge.
He got a stick, and pressed it into the beehive (蜂巢).”
“Immediately the whole swarm of bees flew out and stung him so badly that he had to spend a few days in
bed.”
“So you see, he was not very successful in getting revenge. What if he could act better and forgive the bee
for stinging him?” asked Stephen.

Paragraph 2:
A few days afterward, Philip saw this young Robinson fall as he was carrying home a heavy log of
wood.

___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
答案:
“I must say,” replied Philip, “that your advice seems very good. So come with me please, and I will tell
my father what happened to the ball, and I think he will not be angry with me.” They went, and Philip told hisfather what had happened. He thanked Stephen for the good advice he had given his son, and promised Philip to
give him another ball exactly the same as the first.
“我得说,”菲利普回答说,“你的建议似乎很好。所以请跟我来,我要告诉我父亲舞会发生了
什么事,我想他不会对我生气的。他们走了,菲利普把发生的事告诉了他父亲。他感谢斯蒂芬给他儿
子的好建议,并答应菲利普再给他一个和第一个完全一样的舞会。
A few days afterwards, Philip saw this young Robinson fall as he was carrying home a heavy log of
wood. It was too heavy for him to lift up again. Philip ran to him, and helped him to put it on his shoulder
again. The boy was embarrassed to be treated so kindly when he had ruined Philip’s ball the week before! He
said that he was very sorry for his behavior. Philip went home quite happy. “This,” he said,“ is the best revenge
I could take, in returning good for bad.”

Thanks to my conservative(保守的)family background,I didn't believe in angels(天使).That is,not
until Christmas Eve of 1979, when an angel brought unexpected joy to my home.
After divorce,my two daughters not only lost the safety of a whole family, they also tearfully(泪汪汪地)
left behind neighborhood friends, a familiar school, and a large house. These had all been replaced with a
narrow two-bedroom apartment in a poorer part of town .
I arranged to take my vacation during my children's winter holiday. We spent evenings planning
activities: games, a pizza night , and evening car rides to view neighborhood holiday lights .With expectation ,
they seemed to be in good spirits .
The week before the school break, however, I was fired because of the company's poor performance. By
Christmas Eve,sadness covered our vacation plans. An afternoon outing did little to improve our mood .
On returning to our apartment, we were astonished to see a beautiful,six-foot Christmas tree propped(支
撑)against our front door. In silent wonder, we looked back and forth, from the tree to one another andaround the empty street. Excitement built, and the girls begged to keep the tree.
"Maybe it's for us,"my older daughter guessed.
"Yeah,"repeated my younger child,"I bet an angel brought it to us!"
I laughed aloud at the idea of an angel bringing a Christmas tree to my family. Caught up in their
happiness, I announced the tree "ours".
We moved it inside and headed out to the only upermarkets in our small town open that late on
Christmas Eve. With holiday goods down to half price,I agreed to buy a tree stand(底座),two boxes of
colorful balls , some colorful lights , and one paper angel.

Back home , we moved "our" tree into our tiny living room .

Back home , we moved " our " tree into our tiny living room . Cheerfully, the girls painted some paper
decorations. With delight that had been absent for months, we started to add the things we bought from the
supermarket around the Christmas tree. We put up the lights, hung the colorful balls and placed the paper
angel on top. Finally, with a girl in each of my arms, we sat in the darkness, attracted by the bright Christmas
tree lights. There was full of joy in our new home .
The annual winter holiday became a family tradition. We'd feel complete with a Christmas tree in our
house. For many years, we held our breath and experienced the familiar feeling up our arms when we placed
the original paper angel on the top of each tree. Still, every Christmas Eve, my daughters and I talked aboutthe unexpected joy that Christmas tree had brought us and about the special childhood memories at that time.

After dinner, Mrs. Quimby told the family that Grandma, who lived on a farm, had sent in a lot of
pumpkins for jack-o’-lanterns (空心南瓜灯) for the neighborhood children. There was one in the basement
waiting to be carved, she added. Ramona sprang to her feet and dashed down to bring it up, but it was too
heavy for a second-grader. Finally Mr. Quimby gave a hand.
“Let’s make it smile like last year,” exclaimed Ramona.
“Hmm. Let’s see.” Mr. Quimby studied the pumpkin, turning it to find the best side for the face. With a
pencil he sketched (素描) a nose-shaped nose, not a triangle. Then the mouth turned up on both sides.
“smiling!” Ramona clapped her hands.
Mr. Quimby nodded with a smile, cut a circle around the top of the pumpkin and lifted it off for a lid.
Without being asked, Ramona found a big spoon for scooping out the seeds. Picky-picky, the Quimbys'
shabby old cat, came into the kitchen to see if something had been put in his dish. When he found that it had
not, he paused, sniffed the pumpkin smell and angrily walked out with his tail twitching.
Mr. Quimby began to whistle as he carved with skill and care, first a mouthful of teeth, each one neat
and square, then eyes and eyebrows. He was working on two ears shaped like question marks when Mrs.
Quimby announced it was bedtime for Ramona. Unwillingly Ramona ran, took a shower and quickly returned.
Now, Mr. Quimby had just carved a few C-shaped curls (卷发) around the hole in the top of the pumpkin. He
reached inside and dug a candle holder in the bottom.
“There,” he said, putting down his knife. “A work of art.” Mrs. Quimby found a candle stub (残根),
inserted it in the pumpkin, lit it and set the lid in place. Ramona turned off the light. The jack-o’-lantern was
smiling with a flickering flame. “Wow!” Ramona threw her arms around her father before going to bed with
great satisfaction.

In the middle of the night, Ramona awoke to a noise. Ramona turned on the light and jumped out of bed
angrily. It turned out that the cat accidentally bumped the jack-o’-lantern to the floor while catching mice. It
was broken. Looking at her beloved jack-o-lantern lying on the floor, the candle in it went out, Ramona began
to cry. Mr. Quimby was also woken up, got up to comfort Ramona and helped her take the jack-o’-lantern to
the table.
On the table their jack-o’-lantern no longer had a whole face. Ramona continued to cry, and dad decided
to carve the pumpkin again. He picked up the knife and carved along the incomplete face of the pumpkin.
The incomplete face became funnier, and the lantern laughed more brightly. Dad said, “Ramona, don't cry.
Look at your pumpkin lantern. It’s alive again.” Ramona dried her tears and smiled with greater satisfaction.

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that
she wanted a new bicycle. Her old Barbie bicycle was just too babyish, and besides, it needed a new tire.
As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade, —or so we thought, as she didn’t
mention it again. Merrily, we started purchasing the latest fashion—Baby Sitter’s Club dolls—and beautiful
story books, a doll house, a holiday dress and toys. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she
proudly announced that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else.”
Now we didn’t know what to do. It was just too late, with all the details of preparing Christmas dinner
and buying last-minute gifts. So here we were—Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., having just returned from a
wonderful party, looking forward to our evening ahead—hours of wrapping children’s presents, parents’
presents, a brother’s presents and friends’ presents. With Almie Rose and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, lay
comfortably in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle, the guilt and the idea that we were parents
who would disappoint their child.

“What if I make a little bicycle out of clay (黏土)and she can trade it for a real one later?" my husband
Ron thought. He also wrote a note that she could trade it for a real bike. "This is an expensive item and she is
'such a big girl,' it would be much better for her to pick it out." he thought. So he spent the next four hours
painstakingly (尽心地) working with clay to make a tiny bike. Finally, his face expanded with a satisfied
smile when he finished it.
On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the package with the clay bike. Almie’s heart
raced when she opened it and found the note. "Does this mean that I will trade this bike that Daddy made me
for a real one?" Smiling, I said, "Yes." With tears in her eyes, she replied, "I could never trade in this beautiful
bicycle that Daddy made me. I'd rather keep this than get a real bike." At that moment, we were too amazed to
hear her response and her father hugged her tightly.
