高考真题演练2021年6月新高考卷(母亲节的惊喜)
A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day.
How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French
toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff
knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They
decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the
French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jema found the bread and put two slices into
the egg mixture. Next, Jef turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going
smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna
threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it
cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge
boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But
the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jef to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But
Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she
caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

模拟演练
1.阅读下面文章,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整短文。
Since I was young, I always enjoyed cooking. Every night I would sit in the kitchen and watch my mother
make dinner. I had a toy set of pots and pans, and would copy her actions at the table—pretending to pour in
ingredients and mix them excitedly just as she did. On Sundays, my grandmother would make us a huge family
dinner. A dish cooked from a charred chicken with flavored sauce enjoyed great popularity with us. Watching
her in the kitchen was like watching an artist at work. She never needed a cookbook, never had to follow a
recipe. Everything was second nature. I couldn't wait to learn to cook myself.
So it was no surprise when as an adult I decided to be a chef. I had worked in a number of kitchens over
the years, but when I got the chance to be the head chef at a new restaurant, I could not have been more excited.
On the first night the restaurant opened, I proudly put my apron on and prepared for success. Soon, orders
came in, and the kitchen was at full staff running in every direction. There were many waiters coming in and
out, and cooks walking between stations. It was very exciting, but a bit stressful. There was so much to do and a
lot of pressure to do it perfectly. It seemed like the crowd was not slowing down.
I was hurrying to gather ingredients from the shelves and fill the orders when there was a scream from the
other side of the kitchen. Looking over, I saw one of the other cooks holding her hand in pain. She had burned
her fingers on a pan. I ran over to help, and as we placed her hand under cold water, a puff of smoke started to
rise out of the oven.
“Oh, no!” I screamed. I reached the oven just in time to open the door and see the charred remains of a
roast. Placing my hand on my head, I thought the night couldn't get much worse. One of the waiters came into
the kitchen, looking very worried. Wiping the sweat off his forehead, he said anxiously, “The guests are asking
for the roast.”

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat my father to a special
meal. I glanced through the cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread
would take time, I started on it as soon as he left for work.
As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I
doubled everything. As Dad loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon
there was sticky dough (面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the
dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face him laughing at my work.
I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Dad got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with
rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he
heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing.
Looking out, I saw Dad standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and
looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was
something alive in the rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt
cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder.Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the. fermenting
yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the "living thing"
was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Dad or me.

When I was young, the kitchen had an invisible“stop" sign put there by my mom. “No, you cannot enter
here!” she always said to me. Well, I really don’t blame her as it is no place for kids.
I was just left outside in admiration, looking at what wonders the kitchen held. A few years passed by and I
became very interested in food, both eating and preparing it. However, the kitchen was still out of bounds so I
couldn’t experiment with cooking. But they couldn’t stop me forever now, could they?
It was early morning. Mom had gone for grocery shopping and no one else was at home. Time to strike! I
walked through the dining room and there was the kitchen in front of me!
I stepped inside and took in the sight in front of me—cabinets (储藏柜 ) lining a wall, the oven (炉子)occupying the central place of another wall, the dishes sparkling like diamonds. I had seen it from outside but
this time it was up close. As I hadn’t had breakfast, I decided to begin my first experience as a cook by making
an omelette (煎蛋) . Sure I had seen Mom do it, so how could it be hard?
I searched the cabinets and finally found some eggs and onions. I knew the basics, so I began the work. I
washed an onion first and then chopped it. Then came the egg. It took me two or three attempts to crack one
open and into the bowl. I put the onion and some salt in the bowl too and mixed them. After that, I lighted the
stove and put the frying pan on it and poured some oil in it... and poured some on the floor too, accidentally, of
course! Till the pouring of the mixture into the pan, everything was going perfect—then I wondered what was
used for turning the egg upside down in the pan.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen for a while. There had
been some talk of COVID-19 on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about
their daily routines. Even though everyone in group felt perfectly, we took precautions (预防): we washed our
hands with soap and used hand sanitizer (洗手液), did not share food, and had no significantly close contact.
A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt
some mild symptoms for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the
following day, I started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the masterbedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning, I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when
we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.
At once, Megan called our state’s coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the
head of our local hospital system’s coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone
who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an
urgent care center located 5 kilometer’s drive from my house. The result made my heart sink-I was also tested
positive, and the local hospital didn’t have the facilities for my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to
stay home and quarantine (隔离) myself.
Following the doctor’s advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our kids. With my symptoms
developing, I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought
in food. She slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids’ rooms. She also minimized her
contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

On a misty morning in July, Clay and Acaimie arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga, ready for their first
honeymoon climb. They had married just five days earlier back home in Indiana, the United States.
They had their apparent differences. Acaimie had always been the worrier. Clay, on the other hand, was an
optimist—always certain that things would turn out just fine. So it was Clay who wanted to take a day of their
honeymoon and climb Mount Liamuiga, which is also a dead volcano—a popular destination for vacationers
looking for adventure.
The couple, dressed in white T-shirts and sneakers, arrived for their journey in a rental car expecting to
explore. When arriving, they found an empty dirt parking lot with just a small sign marking the beginning of
the track. They made their way up anyway.
It took them nearly three hours to reach the peak, but the view made it all worthwhile. Though worn-out,
they couldn't have been happier as they took a few selfies(自拍)with their cellphones, and walked around the
edge of the volcano.
That's when Clay saw it: a small track, half-hidden beneath plant life, that led into the volcano's crater(火
山口). A series of holes had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down. For Clay, the sight was
incredibly inviting. It felt like a secret entrance to a mysterious paradise(天堂,乐园). Acaimie was less
enthusiastic. The track was steep, and she was afraid of heights, but she bravely followed Clay's lead. After just
a few minutes of going downwards, though, she'd had enough. She told her husband she'd wait on the rocks just
off the track while he went exploring. “Just be quick,” she said as she watched him set off on the rough path,
zigzagging(曲折前进)while grasping the rope.

“Where’s the rest of my paper?” thundered an angry Papa Bear, storming into the living room. It didn’t
take him long to find Brother Bear and the sports section.
“I just borrowed it.“ said Brother. Papa snatched it up and plumped down in his easy chair. Brother
wandered into the kitchen looking for sympathy from Mama Bear. “Gee,” he said, “what’s eating him?” “Your
father looks forward to his evening paper,” Mama said, “and he has a perfect right to be annoyed when half of it
is missing — and furthermore, thank you not to refer to your father as him!”
She stomped out of the kitchen.
“Why not? He’s a him, isn’t he? Gosh,” said Brother, “what’s eating her?”
What was “eating” Mama was Sister Bear. Sister had been on the phone with Lizy Bruin for almost an
hour.
“But Mama!” she protested when she was told to say good-bye.
“Don’t But Mama’ me!“ said Mama Bear. “This is not your private phone. You’ve had all day to talk to
Lizy at school, and you’ll have all day to talk to her tomorrow. So hang up that phone now!”
Sister did as she was told.
“Phew!” breathed Brother as he fell into the seat beside Cousin Fred on the school bus.
“Tough morning?” asked Fred.
“You better believe it!” said Sister, taking the seat Lizzy had saved for her.
The four compared notes on the way to school. The children agreed that while there was no doubt thattheir parents loved them, they were a little difficult to get along with sometimes. They nagged (唠叨); they said
no a lot; and they never wanted kids to have any fun.
“Hey,” said Brother as they got off the bus, “what are we going to do for the Parents Night Talent Show?”
“Don’t know,” said Lizzy. “Let’s think about it”
When the four searched their brains, Brother snapped his fingers and said, “I’ve got it! Remember what we
were talking about just now?” “Sure,” said Fred. “We were saying how grownups can be a big pain.”

LESSONS LEARNED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Mr. Gray was my history teacher in tenth grade. I couldn’t tell what kind of history he taught for two
reasons: one, I never liked history, and two, my body was in class, but my mind wasn’t. Mr. Gray wasn’t the
teacher who offered retakes (补考) on tests; he did so much more for me than that. He offered me a pair of ears
and a shoulder to cry on.Before Mr. Gray came along, one major event was taking place in my life. My mom told me she wanted to
divorce my dad. Why then? I didn’t understand. I barricaded (筑起壁垒) myself in my basement bedroom,
listening to angry music and sleeping. I fell into a depression and my grades were falling. Then there was Mr.
Gray.
I sat against a brick wall outside the library, knees pulled into my chest, head down, surrounded by my
noisy friends that I was slowly distancing myself from, when I heard his voice: “Ever feel like you’re a fire
hydrant (消防栓) and every dog in the neighborhood is stopping by to visit you?” I picked my head up and then
I saw Mr. Gray.
I had heard him use this line in the classroom a few times before, when it looked like a kid was having a
bad day. It usually aroused a laugh and ended there. This time was different though — he was waiting for an
answer. Next thing I knew I was following him into the library.
We sat amongst the shelves of the mostly empty library for the rest of lunchtime. I don’t remember much
about that first conversation other than the unconditional promise he made me of lending a pair of ears and a
shoulder to cry on. What made him such a special teacher was that he saw that I was struggling and reached out
to me outside of the classroom.

Lucy was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of
the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.
Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She
stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no
money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Lucy cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Lucy as she wiped her tears.” Even a
stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed
no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you
really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has
raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your
gratitude to her?”
Lucy sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and
weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why
haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”
On the way home, Lucy made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as
she arrived home.

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She
rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock.Every weekend morning, her
mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all,
she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the
living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,“Good
morning, my Dear!”Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy
and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not-rich
family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they
were straight-A students throughout the academic career and actively involved in school activities. They
became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up?”Joan said in an easy tone.“I have been very nice recently, my baby.
Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one
and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a
glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped(拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise
for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement.“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up.We will give
Mum a surprise !”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan.
After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.

I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big
garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering
them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that
time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.Unfortunately, in the summer vacation before senior high school, my father was seriously injured in an
accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of
the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry. I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I
assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly
often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be
picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜)
leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When
I was making the salad, my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was
embarrassed and admitted, “Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster. I don’t want to disappoint him,
so I went to the store and bought some vegetables.” My mother smiled, saying, “Honey, you know what is the

good night’s rest, I called out towards the kitchen to my smart speaker, “Alexa, play sounds to sleep by.” As I
gathered my cozy sheet up under my chin, I felt at peace with my cat Bella snuggled up(依偎)to me.
During the night, a heavy object landed on my stomach, causing me to scream and sit up, only to discover
that it was Bella. She had a habit of waking me up to get her a snack, but the hands on the clock said 3:00 am,
and I was annoyed that she had interrupted a happy dream. I fell back against the pillow and promised I’d feed
her in the morning. That wasn’t acceptable to her, so she continued to walk on top of me while pressing her
paws into my body.
Because that proved to be unsuccessful, she jumped over to the bedside table and deliberately used her
paw to knock things on the floor, one at a time, to keep me from going back to sleep. Her efforts paid off as I
looked over in the dark room and knew the smug(沾沾自喜的)look on her face conveyed a serious demand.
“Get up, human. I’m ready for my nightly treat.”
Knowing she would keep disturbing me until she got her snack, I took a few minutes to focus my eyes and
heard what sounded like running water or someone pressure-washing a wall. I couldn’t imagine our apartment
staff doing maintenance in the middle of the night, so I assumed I had turned off the water tap. I would regret
the large water bill it would bring about, so I unwillingly got up and went into the kitchen. I found nothing out
of the ordinary so I continued to search with Bella following me. I checked the bathroom, where I found no
running water.

“Jordi! Wake up!” Dad’s voice calls from the hallway, and I sit up quickly. Today is the day! The day that I
will finally be a casteller —a castle builder.
My city is hosting today’s competition. Never before have I been part of the tower. It is so high. And it
sometimes falls. I was hesitant to be up there. Today, for the first time in a competition, I will help build the
tower !
In town, I see that the center of the square is already packed with people. While I wait for our turn to
compete, my friend Tomeu comes to stand with me.“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu?” I ask. Tomeu’s
dark eyes sparkle as he smiles at me. “We are never ready, Jordi. None of us who compete knows for sure how
it will go.” He gestures toward the tower going up in front of us. “Just like these people, you must have faith in
the others. You must trust those below who lift you up, and you must trust yourself.” Tomeu pats me on the
shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.”
I nod to show that I understand. I will do my best to follow his suggestions. Soon, too soon,it is our turn.
Dad and several strongest men make the base for our tower. Four smaller men create a strong second level.
Our tower is growing taller and taller. I watch as Mom climbs nimbly(敏捷地)up. She and my aunt form the
fifth level.
“Then suddenly it is my turn. Tomeu and I will make up the sixth level. Each of the castellers wears a
waist belt, and I grip the belts with my bare toes as I climb up. I pass the first two levels without difficulty, but
as I go higher, the tower feels less steady. By the time I reach the fifth level, nerves make my hands sweat and
my knees tremble, for I am very high off the ground.

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various
activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we
gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching
videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told
Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your
phone away and enjoy the scenery. It's really amazing. ”
“Well,” Jane shrugged (耸) her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in
several online shops, so I'll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn't look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I
cannot walk that far. ”When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK, I'll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and
packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly
downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I'm ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the
blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both
sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path. “I'm still wondering if
this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

As mountains go,1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn’t particularly grand. But its inviting views of western
Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming self-satisfied with its steep, slippery cliffs(悬崖) , resulting in
countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, a week shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak’s
record. Therefore, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him oneday. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the vista; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking
over the lip of the cliff with her husband.
When Grant’s mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly,he heard a heavy
dull sound, he told the Cornell Daily Sun. Then he heard something chilling: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled
wildly. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was no-where to be seen. She'd fallen off the side of the
mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees.Grant told his
mother,“I hate to say this, but they’re probably going to find a body.”
Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the trail. But when he saw hikers still
searching, he decided to lend a hand. “My young dumb brain was like, ‘I can do it,’” he says. After assuring his
mother that he would be safe, he made a long and difficult journey alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
After 15 minutes of scrambling over the large rock, pushing past prickly(多刺的)brush, and slipping down
patches of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled in a
kneeling position on a small rocky.
The woman had fallen about 75 feet.
Unexpectedly,she was alive.
“Paula!” Grant shouted.“Paula.Is that you?”

I was turning ten in the summer of 1959. On a warm evening while at the dinner table, my mother
announced we were taking a trip to Niagara Falls when summer vacation started so that we could celebrate my
birthday there.
It all sounded incredibly good until Mom said we would be driving to Canada. As usual, my father would
do all the driving while my mother managed the directions.
I looked over at my sister,Marlene, who was three years younger than me and rolled my eyes. She giggled
and did the same. It wasn’t that I didn’t like car rides - but my Dad usually took a wrong turn along the way
and Mom would complain. “You were supposed to turn right according to the map like I told you, but you
made a left.” My Dad would get annoyed and growl. My mother would end the conversation with “I can’t
believe we’re arguing over this.” Later, they’d apologize and make up until the next wrong turn.
Driving in the car also meant I’d share the back seat with my sister, which was not part of what I
considered a pleasant journey.
“Hey, can we take a plane there instead?” I asked between mouthfuls of hamburger and Frenchfries.
Sometimes, when Dad had a day off from work, we would drive out to Idlewild Airport to watch the planes
take off and land. I always hoped one day Pd get to sit in my own seat on one of those planes. It would be cool
to get high up and then stick my head out a window. Windows on planes do open, don’t they?
“Sorry honey, maybe next time,” my mother replied as she and my father exchanged glances. I turned to
my sister, hoping she’d say she wanted to get on a plane, but she stuck her tongue out at me and giggled.
Didn’t they get it? I was in desperate need of a plane ride, and I needed something cool to talk about with
my friends when we got home. “Sitting in the back seat of the car sucks,” I blurted out.
“Jay!” My mother shouted. “Watch your mouth!”
“Ok, sorry, but I really wanted to go by plane.”
“This conversation’s over.” My father growled. “If you’re finished eating, go to your room.”
