At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and
motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. But look closer.
Easthope is an emergency planner whose job is to support the survivors of major disasters, in which capacity
she acted following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Tower. For two decades, the public
knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we
might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a
best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what
she did.
“At literary festivals, most authors get questions about their writing process,” Easthope says. “But I wouldn’t
get those. What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid?
How did I handle? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t
enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓
缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.
While her publisher describes Come What May as a roadmap for resilience (韧性), the word is one Easthope
dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better one. Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during
illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to
forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect.
4.What might a Cassandra be like according to paragraph 1?
A.Severe and forbidding.
B.Competent and cautious.
C.Friendly and energetic.
D.Cheerful and approachable.
5.What led to increased public awareness of Easthope’s work in 2023?
A.The publication of a best seller.
B.The growth of professional disaster circles.
C.Her involvement in2004 tsunami relief.
D.Her sudden rise to fame through media.
6.Why are readers’ questions cited in paragraph 3?
A.To reveal Easthope’s personal fears.
B.To explain Easthope’s writing process.
C.To show Easthope’s writing motivation.
D.To present public doubts about Easthope’s work.
7.What does Easthope agree on handling disasters?
A.Resilience matters most.
B.Forgetting aids recovery.
C.Positive thinking takes the lead.
D.Minor sufferings deserve attention.

Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen ( 山杨) trees to grow tall and join the
forest — the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years.
Gray wolves had disappeared from Yellowstone National Park by 1930 following extensive habitat loss,
human hunting and government wolf-killing programs. Without these wolves, populations of deer grew quickly. At
their peak population, an estimated 18,000 deer ranged across the park, living on grasses as well as the leaves of
trees like aspen. This prevented young trees from establishing themselves, and surveys in the 1990s found no
young aspen trees. But when wolves were reintroduced in 1995, the picture began to change. As wolf numbers rose,
the deer population in the park dropped sharply, and it is now down to about 2,000.
In the new study, published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management, Luke Painter and his colleagues
from Oregon State University surveyed aspen stands. “We’re seeing significant new growth of young aspen and
this is the first time that we’ve found it in our plots since the 1940s,” Painter said.
However, while Yellowstone’s aspen are recovering, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The deer
population has declined, but bison (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bison are a lot harder for wolves
to take down, said Painter, so increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new restriction on aspen in some
areas.
The re-emergence of aspen has widespread effects, Painter said. “Aspen are a key species for biodiversity.
The aspen trees let more sunlight through their leaves, which creates a habitat that supports a lot of diversity of
plants.”
“The paper shows the important ecological benefits occurring from the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone
National Park,” Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds, said. “Ecosystems that lack large
carnivores ( 食肉动物) are often increasingly out of balance. While reintroducing carnivores raises important
challenges around human-wildlife coexistence, this work brings the significant ecological benefits in the long run.”
8.What can be inferred about Yellowstone Park before 1930 according to the text?
A.Deer population reached its peak.
B.Human activities slightly affected wolves.
C.Bison were the main species in the park.
D.Gray wolves existed with deer there.
9.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A.The aspen trees are too young to make a forest.
B.The aspen trees cannot get rid of survival threat.
C.Other tree species may hold back aspen’s recovery.
D.Yellowstone is not the best habitat for aspen trees.
10.What is Professor Spracklen’s attitude toward carnivore restoration in ecosystems?
A.Favorable.
B.Skeptical.
C.Disapproving.
D.Worried.
11.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The History of Gray wolves in Yellowstone
B.The Return of Gray wolves Revives Aspen Trees
C.The Challenges of Human-Wildlife Coexistence Grow
D.The Restoration of Large Carnivores in National Parks

As bird numbers fall worldwide, scientists are using algorithm ( 算法)-powered apps to gather data about
bird species.
One such example is the owl project, where researchers placed more than 1,600 recorders to track where the
endangered species spends its time. But that’s a lot for a human to sort through. “There’s no way we can listen to
that— not even close, right?” says Connor Wood, a researcher leading the owl project. “We need flexible tools to
identify as many bird species as possible.”
In 2016, Connor Wood approached Stefan Kahl, a computer scientist at Chemnitz University, to help create
an algorithm that processes bird sounds recorded in the wild. Two years later, the team launched the official
BirdNET app, which allows people to upload their own recordings from various devices. The app converts a bird’s
song into an image of soundwaves known as spectrogram (声谱图). Then, the image is fed into the app’s algorithm
which can accurately show the unique frequency changes, timing, and amplitude (振幅) of a particular call. “These
patterns that the algorithms find are much more subtle and fine-grained than what any human could do,” says Kahl.
It turns out this team actually can process this flood of data—they just need a little help from BirdNET, an
AI-powered system that can identify more than 6,000 species of birds just by their calls. Wood and his team
recently used BirdNET to create the first ecosystem-wide assessment of spotted owl populations across the Sierra
Nevada. This information shows owl population trends that can boost restoration and conservation efforts.
Over the past decade, several apps have popped up that use AI to identify different bird sounds. However,
like most AI-based technology, these apps aren’t without limitations. In 2023, ecologist Pérez-Granados found that
BirdNET didn’t always register a bird’s song, and sometimes misidentified it as another species.
There are some ways to lessen these risks, including accounting for uncertainty using statistical models or
manually going through identifications to double check data. For a 2022 study, Wood and his team assessed the
accuracy of BirdNET submissions, and found their data could successfully reproduce the known migratory routes
of several North American and European birds. And more research shows AI can identify bird behaviors and
distribution, which is critical for conservation.
12.Why do researchers need flexible tools according to paragraph 2?
A.Bird songs are hard to hear in recordings.
B.There are too many recordings to process.
C.Recordings have lots of background noise.
D.Manual work often leads to more mistakes.
13.How does BirdNet identify bird species?
A.By analyzing bird call patterns.
B.By recording videos and sounds.
C.By showing bird images and clips.
D.By describing bird behavior details.
14.What do the findings of Cristian Pérez-Granados suggest?
A.BirdNET detects bird species accurately.
B.BirdNET helps protect endangered birds.
C.Algorithms clearly underperform humans.
D.AI-based tools may have certain problems.
15.What is suggested to improve BirdNET’s performance?
A.Mapping global bird distribution patterns.
B.Expanding the BirdNET’s recording range.
C.Combining manual and technical methods.
D.Improving the accuracy of the submissions.

体裁:说明文 字数:249 话题:媒体素养的定义、重要性、历史发展以及实践方法
In today’s world, we are constantly surrounded by media — from newspapers and television to social media.
Faced with this flood of messages, how can we tell what’s true, what’s biased (有偏见的), and what’s meant to
influence us? 16
Media literacy (素养) is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. It’s
recognized as a key skill in the 21st century. 17 Therefore, media literacy is no longer optional. It’s
essential for informed participation in our daily lives.
The concept of media literacy has a long history. As early as the 1920s, organizations in the UK encouraged
people to be more thoughtful media users. At the time, the goal was mostly to protect audiences, especially young
people, from media influence. However, with the rise of television, media consumption only grew, 18
Things began to change again with the arrival of the Internet and mobile devices. Now, people can access
media anytime and anywhere. This shift led educators and researchers to renew their focus — not on avoiding
media, but on using it wisely.
Research confirms the benefits of media literacy education. Media literacy programs can reduce body
dissatisfaction, especially among young women exposed to unrealistic beauty standards. 19 These
findings suggest that media literacy not only protects us from harm, but also supports healthier, more thoughtful
living.
20 Experts suggest examining media through four lenses: cognitive, emotional, aesthetic, and
moral. By doing so, we become more active and empowered media users.
A.That’s where media literacy comes in.
B.So, how can we practice media literacy?
C.They can also prevent the spread of misinformation.
D.while interest in teaching media literacy declined.
E.This is also likely to promote your health and happiness.
F.Studies show that media can influence our behaviors, often without us realizing it.
G.so modern media literacy education teaches people to question what they see and hear.
