BPapa, as a son of a dirt-poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the
rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on,
listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There’s so much to learn,” he’d
say. “Though we’re born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.” He was determined that none of his children
would be denied an education.
Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing
what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken
lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.
Then came the moment — the time to share the day’s new learning.
Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen.
“Felice,” he’d say, “tell me what you learned today.” “learned that the population of Nepalis...”
Silence. Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation of the world would depend upon it. “The
population of Nepal. Hmm. Well…” he’d say. “Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went
on a search for Nepal.
This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn. Dinner ended only after we had a
clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts.
As children, we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing
together, sharing experiences and participating in one another’s education. And by looking at us, listening to us,
respecting our input, affirming our value; giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestionably our most influential
teacher.
Later during my training as a future teacher, I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were
imparting what Papa had known all along — the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all
my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population of Nepal might
prove useful.
24.What do we know from the first paragraph?

B.Those born stupid could not change their life.
C.The town elders wanted to learn about the world.
D.The author’s father was born in a worker’s family.
25.What can we know about the author?A.He enjoyed talking about news.
B.He knew very well about Nepal.
C.He appreciated his father’s educational technique.
D.He felt regret about those wasted days.
26.What is the greatest value of “dinner time” to the author?
A.Showing talents. B.Family get-together.
C.Continual learning. D.Winning Papa’s approval.
27.Which of the following can best describe the author’s father?
A.He was a wise man willing to share his knowledge.
B.He was a teacher strict about everything his students did.
C.He was an educator expert at training future teachers.
D.He was a parent insistent on his children’s education.

A recent study from the University of Guelph in Canada has revealed a surprising discovery about common
eastern bumblebees (大黄蜂): These insects can survive underwater for up to a week. This finding, published in the
journal Biology Letters, came about due to an experimental error when researchers placed hibernating (冬眠的)
queen bumblebees in water and found them alive days later. The discovery has impressed scientists. particularly
because bumblebees are land-based creatures not typically associated with water environments.
Nigel Raine, a professor in the school of environmental sciences at the university and the study’s lead author,
expressed his astonishment at the results. To further explore this phenomenon, Raine and his team conducted an
experiment involving 143 hibernating queen bumblebees. They discovered that those placed underwater for up to
seven days had similar survival rates to those not, indicating that the bees’ ability to survive such conditions may be
more common than previously thought.
The research underlines the strength of bumblebees during their hibernation period. a critical phase in their
life cycle that has remained largely unexplored. Queen bumblebees typically hibernate alone in small holes during
the cold months, which are believed to protect them from flooding. However, this study reveals that these bees
possess an unexpected adaptation, allowing them to survive even in flooded conditions.
Given these findings, one possible explanation for their survival is diapause, a state of suspended growth and
reproduction characterized by reduced oxygen intake. During this state. bumblebees may close their spiracles (气
孔) to prevent water from entering their bodies, and they might also breathe through their skin. This energy-savingmode is likely a key factor in their ability to survive beneath the water.
Raine emphasized the importance of understanding these mechanisms, as it could have significant
implications for the study of wild insects that help with plant reproduction, which are crucial for food security and
ecosystem health, His team’s research will aim to determine whether hibernating queens can survive even longer
periods underwater and if similar strength exists in other bee species.
28.What do we know about the finding?
A.It matched prior beliefs. B.It concerned sea insects.
C.It was fully anticipated. D.It was made by accident.
29.What can be inferred about bumblebees from paragraph 3?
A.They hibernate in groups for protection.B.They are always protected from flooding.
C.They have a hidden adaptation mechanism. D.They reproduce better in flooded conditions.
30.What may Nigel Raine do in the future?
A.Secure research patents. B.Prioritize dietary security.
C.Conduct further research. D.Raise ecological awareness.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Bumblebee Reproductive Habits B.Bumblebee Hibernation Patterns
C.Scientists’ Experimental Methods D.Bumblebee Survival Underwater

Allow me to list the short-lived hobbies I started and quickly gave up when I didn’t succeed pottery, softball,
violin and designing new-style T-shirts. Uncomfortable to ask for help, I’d rather drop a hobby than give myself
time to improve. Being challenged can make me angry sometimes.
Babies and children feel challenged almost at everything, because each experience is new. Adults, on the
other hand, see anything less than doing really well as failure. If you’re at all like me, you protect yourself from
this feeling and avoid hobbies that might show a lack of competence.
Although challenges can bring discomfort, we shouldn’t shy away from activities we enjoy simply because
we aren’t great at them. As the season for new habits and hobbies comes, put your pride to one side, and embrace
the challenge.
The way you think about your abilities can influence your performance. There are two ways people view
success: fixed mindset and growth mindset. If you have a fixed mindset, you may believe you already have all the
skills and abilities you will ever have and you may never improve with effort. Growth mindset is the belief that youcan advance through hard work, support, and a different method. “To develop a growth mindset, remind yourself
that the first time you began any endeavor, you probably met challenges,” says Daya Grant, a mental performance
coach. “Then you got better. As you learn and build skills, however slowly, celebrate those little wins. A win is a
win. It doesn’t really matter to the brain how big or small it is.”
“But If you love the challenge,” Grant says, “or enjoy the hard work, accept the fact that you may be doing
the thing, whether it’s dancing or playing the violin, well enough.” This reminder is one I’ll take with me as I start
new projects that I might not be naturally good at. Catch me at a pottery wheel or playing my guitar in my
bedroom. Or don’t. The results may not be pretty—and I do not care.
32.What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To provide background information. B.To bring about the topic of the passage.
C.To stress the importance of success. D.To introduce his personal experience
33.What does the underlined word “this feeling” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Feeling confident almost at everything B.Dropping a hobby rather than improving it.
C.Seeing anything that can’t do well as failure. D.Avoiding hobbies showing a lack of abilities
34.What does Daya Grant think is important in developing a growth mindset?
A.Building practical and creative skills. B.Asking for professional suggestions.
C.Having enough patience and confidence.D.Developing a strong sense of competition.
35.What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?
A.He has developed his own ways of succeeding. B.He has learned how to balance life and work.
C.He cares a lot about what others think of him D.He now learns how to embrace challenges.

In a busy street of New York City, two strangers, Emily and Jack, found themselves on an unexpected
journey of kindness and connection.
Emily, a young graphic (图案的) designer, was hurrying home after a late- night shift when she accidentally
dropped her bag, scattering (散落) its contents onto the sidewalk. The scattered items were her work laptop, her
latest design drawings, her mother's medication and some other things that were crucial to Emily. The wind was so
strong that it could have blown her belongings away at any moment. Tired out, she knelt down, trying to gather her
scattered belongings. Just then, Jack, a middle- aged man with a gentle smile, approached her. “Let me help you
with that,” Jack offered, his voice warm and reassuring.
“Oh, thank you so much!” Emily replied with embarrassment.
As they picked up the items together, they struck up a conversation. Emily shared her story of a busy week,
mentioning how her mother had always been a pillar (支柱) of support for her and her ten-year-old sister since theirfather's early passing, a source of unconditional love and wisdom that had shaped their lives. Jack, in turn, talked
about his recent retirement and his dreams of hosting his own photography exhibition, showcasing the beauty he
had captured through his camera over the years.
Suddenly, Emily's phone rang. It was her sister, panic- stricken, informing her that their mother needed
immediate medical attention. Emily's face paled, and her hands started to shake. Jack asked, “Is everything
alright?”
“My mother...she needs me, but I don't know how to get to the hospital quickly. I have no car.” Emily said,
tears welling up in her eyes. Without hesitation, Jack said, “I'll take you there. My car is parked nearby.” When they
arrived at the hospital, Jack insisted on staying until Emily's mother was stabilized.
Weeks later, Emily's mother made a full recovery. Wanting to repay Jack's kindness, Emily decided to do
something for his dream.
