(2024·重庆·模拟预测)From the sky, parts of Borneo look like the top of a giant broccoli (西兰花). As theworld’s third largest island with tropical rain forest, it lies in Southeast Asia. I lived on Borneo and was fortunate to
have many wild animals visit my backyard.
During the first week in our home, I found a few eggs in a bed of dirt. I was told they were the eggs of a black
spitting cobra (眼镜蛇) which was common here. Poison from its bite can kill a person in one to six hours. However, a
cobra makes its living by eating small animals. It strikes at humans only in self-defense. We could live with our cobra
by being careful not to surprise or scare it.
As a family, my husband and I and our three children thought of ways to be on the lookout. We made up chants
and rhymes that we recited aloud so that we were alert and aware whenever we set foot outdoors. One went:
Cobra, cobra, are you there? Please don’t fall onto my hair.
The other day, the snake was on a branch of an oil-palm tree, less than ten feet from where we were sipping
tea. Everyone came out to see it, and chairs were arranged as if for a concert. Its skin was jet-black. It glistened in the
sun and lay still. Only through the binoculars (望远镜) could we see her breathing. She seemed to enjoy all the
attention.
As we stared openmouthed at her grace, she missed a branch and fell splat to the ground. We burst out laughing
as she recovered and wriggled up the tree.
I joked with my husband it was funny the way the cobra was showing off so much that it got too sure of itself
and fell. He replied snakes probably do not think like humans. Then I realized a snake would naturally stay near the
oil-palm tree whose cores are a rich source of food for mice and squirrels. Small mammals are the cobra’s favorite
meal.
We shared the garden with the cobra for the rest of our stay and were sad indeed when we had to move and
leave Borneo.
24.Why did we sing out “Cobra, cobra, are you there”?
A.To scare away cobras. B.To draw cobras’ attention.
C.To caution ourselves against dangers. D.To remind ourselves of small mammals.
25.What can be learned about the cobra?
A.It is into humans. B.It thinks like humans.
C.Its favorite food is eggs. D.It is dangerous when threatened.
26.Why did the cobra stay on an oil-palm tree?
A.For food. B.For rest. C.For pleasure. D.For sunbathing.
27.What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show respect for mother nature. B.To call on people to protect snakes.
C.To share an interesting life experience. D.To introduce a common cobra to readers.

(2024·湖南衡阳·模拟预测)Starship Technologies originated in Estonia but is now based in San Francisco.
The company employs dozens of six-wheeled delivery robots on college campuses. Starship is also adding four new
schools to its operational field: University of Illinois Chicago, University of Kentucky, University of Nevada, and
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Currently, the company operates on 20 college campuses in 15 states with a global fleet that totals 1,000 robots. This expansion will add 85 more robots to that fleet. Starship states that it has done over 1.5 million deliveries
worldwide since its founding in 2014. The company has raised $102 million so far, including $17 million in fresh
funding announced earlier this year.
Each robot in Starship is electric, has a box that can fit about 20 pounds of goods, and has a number of cameras
to identify objects in the way and help guide it to its destination. The robots have a delivery area of three to four miles
and can travel at a maximum speed of 4mph, which is obviously slower than a delivery by a human on a bike or in a
car. And they can climb the edge of roads but not stairs, which may limit their appeal to customers who live in high-
rise buildings.
Delivery via robots is still relatively brave in the US. There are a handful of start-ups operating delivery
robots of varying sizes, everything from fully-sized minivans like Udelv to robots that are almost similar to Starship’s
like Amazon and Yandex. Recently, Postmates has also invented a delivery robot called Serve that can carry 50 pounds
of goods. There are even some newly produced robots like Nuro, which has made what can be best described as a
mini-robotic car, and others that fall somewhere in between. All claim to be automated, but some still require humans
to follow their movements.
Demand for delivery robots has risen since the pandemic, though it remains to be seen whether that will hold
up as the economy reopens and fewer people rely on takeout from restaurants.
28.What do we know about Starship Technologies from Paragraph 1?
A.It operates globally.
B.It employs university students as designers.
C.It is spreading its service on campuses.
D.It is diversifying into the field of scientific education.
29.Why do people in high-rise buildings show little interest in delivery robots?
A.They are likely to get lost.
B.They work much slower than men.
C.They have difficulty going up stairs.
D.They are unable to identify customers.
30.What does the underlined word “brave” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.New. B.Efficient.
C.Conventional. D.Courageous.
31.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future demand for robot delivery?
A.Indifferent. B.Objective.
C.Skeptical. D.Worried.

(2024·湖北·模拟预测)Two researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Alex Robel and Shi Joyce
Sim, have worked on a new model for how water moves under glaciers (冰川). The new theory shows that up to
twice the amount of under-glacier water that was originally predicted might be flowing into the ocean-potentially
increasing glacial melting (融化), sea level rise, and so on.While there are pre-existing methods to understand under-glacier flow, these techniques involve time-
consuming computations. Robel and Sim developed a simple solution, which can predict how fast exfiltration (渗
漏) is, using satellite measurements of Antarctica from the last two decades. Robel explains, “Previously, people
would run a model, which would have to be applied at every point under Antarctica, and then run forward over a long
time period. Now the entirety of our prediction can be done in a second on a computer.”
The potentially large source of under-glacier water-possibly up to double the amount previously thought-could
be affecting how quickly glacial ice flows and how quickly the ice melts at its base. Robel and Sim hope that the
predictions made possible by this theory can be included into ice sheet models that scientists use to predict future ice
sheet change and sea level rise.
Beyond sea level rise, this additional exfiltration and melting has other possible future effects. Some of the
places of richest ocean productivity in the world occur off the coast of Antarctica, and being able to better predict
exfiltration and melting could help ocean biologists better understand where ocean productivity is occurring, and how
it might change in the future.
Robel also hopes this work will open the doorway to more cooperation with groundwater hydrologists who
may be able to apply their knowledge to ice sheet dynamics, while Sim stresses the need for more fieldwork. “Getting
the observationalists interested in trying to help us better understand the qualities of ice sheets would produce a
dramatic effect,” Sim says. “That’s our largest unknown at this point, and it heavily influences the results.”
32.What is the new model used to study?
A.The risk of sea level rise. B.The changes of ocean ecosystems.
C.The speed of glacial melting. D.The flow of water beneath glaciers.
33.How does the author show the advantage of the new model?
A.By analyzing facts. B.By referring to figures.
C.By giving examples. D.By making a comparison.
34.What does the author stress about the additional exfiltration and melting?
A.It gets attention in many places. B.It may influence more than one field.
C.It is responsible for sea level rise. D.It has been considered by biologists.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.An In-depth Study of Antarctic Glaciers B.A Prediction of the Future of Glaciers
C.A Big Discovery About Under-glacier Flow D.A New Model Invented to Monitor Glaciers

(2024·湖北·三模)Do you like spending time alone? If so, you probably know that there are people criticizing
you for it. They think you are alone because you’re anxious about being around other people and just don’t have very
positive relationships with humans. 36
These have been the common opinions on spending time alone for far too long. 37 Scholars
believe that spending time alone helps you break free from pressures and is good for mental and physical health.38 You need to feel the dissatisfaction with where you’re now to get the motivation to change
and achieve what you want. Being around others constantly might distract (转移) yourself from the informative
feeling. Spending time alone enables you to check how your life is in line with your plans, or research resources
related to your aims.
Your creativity is increased when being alone. If you are constantly in the presence of others, your mind is
more likely to be engaged in being social. 39 Those who enjoy creative pursuits, like writing and
music, especially need to get alone time. If you’re not used to alone time, being alone while around others is a good
way to start, such as writing at a library or in a café.
Keeping yourself away from others improves sleep quality. If you are always busy with others, you may notice
that it’s difficult to wind down at night. Those moments right before you fall asleep can be uncomfortable if you are
not used to being alone. 40 Consequently, you feel more comfortable transitioning (过渡) from
wakefulness to sleep.
A.Alone time helps you focus on your goals.
B.Or they assume you are lonely and depressed.
C.You don’t need to worry about opinions others have.
D.Reasons for being alone vary from one person to another.
E.More recently, the value of aloneness has been increasingly recognized.
F.Having space from others can free up your mind to think of new ideas.
G.Taking time for yourself can help you practice being with your thoughts.

(2024·广东·一模)Hearing that one neighbor had just welcomed a new litter, Allen, a 9- year- old boy, rushed to
see the newborn cats. However, during his visit, Allen noticed one of the cats wasn’t moving due to disability on its
hind (后面的) legs. So while the other little cats were exploring their surroundings, this one stayed behind.
Allen was significantly affected by the scene of this lonesome cat. He returned home and started to wonder
whether he could do anything to help. When the boy told his mother about that, the mother recalled a video about pet
wheelchairs.
They finally found the video on YouTube, in which an animal lover, Addy, shared a heartwarming and
innovative project: building a wheelchair for a pet cat with mobility issues due to a hind- leg injury. As a caring pet
owner, Addy took viewers through the DIY process of making a custom wheelchair to aid her cat’s movement and
improve its quality of life. She began by measuring the cat and based on the measurements, cut the plastic pipes to
make a frame (支架). Then she connected the pipes and attached the wheels to the back end of the frame. Finally, she
added a harness (保护带) to ensure it was fit and comfortable for the cat.
Seeing the cat in the wheelchair moving around happily with the support, Allen thought that would be the best
option for the little cat.
But the wheelchair in the video seemed too big and too heavy for a newborn cat. Where could he find the
suitable materials?
His mother unearthed an old bag from the cupboard, whose belt was just fine for the the harness. As for the
frame, they searched the storage room in their house and found an old umbrella, whose frame provided enough thin
iron bars that were durable and light. But they were difficult for him to cut off. Allen thought his father could help.
However, where could they find the small wheels? (320 words)
