(2023·黑龙江哈尔滨·统考二模)As Rendall and his friend Bourke were searching for
holiday gifts, they came across a lion cub (幼兽) for sale in a store in London. They bought it and
named it Christian. It was a lovely animal, full of character. They looked after Christian for about
a year, during which time an amazing bond formed between the two men and the lion. The three of
them shared a flat over a furniture shop on London’s King’s Road, where cute and intelligent
Christian quickly became a local celebrity, cruising (开车兜风) the streets in the back of a
Bentley, popping for lunch at a local restaurant, and even posing for a fashion advertisement.
But soon, Christian outgrew Rendall’s flat and soon even the church garden where he went
for exercise wasn’t large enough for him. They realized that their pet needed to be among other
lions and deserved to live free in his natural environment. With their friends’ help, Rendall and
Bourke took Christian to Kenya and placed it under the expert care of “the father of lions” George
Adamson, where the two would introduce Christian to the wild. Rendall and Bourke spent several
months with Christian, helping him adapt to the new living environment, and then left unwillingly.
A year later, they went back to Kenya, hoping to find the lion. When they finally found Christian,
incredibly, Christian walked over slowly. Then suddenly he recognized them! He ran over and
jumped up on them. They received a loving welcome from their lion, who was fit in with Africa
and a life with other lions in the wild.

(2023秋·河北石家庄·高三石家庄一中校考开学考试)Ocean water can be used to cool
buildings. This idea could help cities reduce their carbon footprint and slow climate change.
Although plentiful, ocean water is too salty to drink. But it could serve as an important and still
largely untapped resource for many coastal cities. The idea came to Zi Zhang shortly after she
moved from Michigan to Hong Kong a few years ago to get a PhD in engineering.
In 2013, Hong Kong built a system that used seawater to cool part of the city. The system
pumps cold seawater into a plant with heat exchangers. The seawater absorbs heat to chill(冷
却)pipes full of circulating water. That chilled water then flows into buildings to cool their rooms.
This type of system tends to use far less energy than typical air conditioners. Zhang wondered:
How much water and energy had this way saved Hong Kong? And why weren’t other coastal
cities doing this? Zhang and her team set out for answers The group focused on Hong Kong and
two other big coastal cities: Jeddah and Miami. The idea was to see what it might look like if all
three adopted city-wide saltwater systems. The cities climates were quite different. But all three
were densely populated, which should minimize some costs.
All three places would save lots of freshwater, the researchers found. Miami could save 16
percent of the freshwater it uses each year. Hong Kong, with more non-drinking-water needs, was
saving up to 28 percent. Estimated energy savings ranged from just 3 percent in Jeddah to 11
percent in Miami. These savings came from the more efficient saltwater air conditioning. Also, the
cities would need less energy to treat salty wastewater than they have been using to treat sewage
now.Though costly to build, saltwater-cooling systems could pay off in the long run for many
cities. And because these systems use so much less electricity, they’re greener and emit(排放)less
carbon-rich greenhouse gases. Scientists refer to this as a type of decarbonization(脱碳).
28.What is Zi Zhang’s idea about sea water in paragraph 1?
A.Using sea water to cook.
B.Using ocean water to cool buildings.
C.Using sea water to stop climate change.
D.Using ocean water get rid of carbon footprint.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The functions of sea water. B.The energy use in buildings.
C.The purpose of Zi Zhang’s research D.Hong Kong’s sea water use system.
30.What is the aim of using numbers in paragraph 3?
A.To prove Zi Zhang’s idea. B.To attract readers’ attention.
C.To show the writer’s caution. D.To explain Zi Zhang’s theory.
31.What is the author’s attitude toward the research?
A.Objective. B.Ignorant. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.

(2023·黑龙江哈尔滨·统考二模)A well-received recommendation to drink eight glasses
of water (or around 2 litres) a day may have led to 20 million litres of water wasted each day in
UK according to scientists. The latest study, the most thorough one to date on water turnover (周
转), finds that people have a wide range of water intakes and that many people only require about
1.5 to 1.8 litres a day, lower than recommended.
“The current recommendation, ignoring the water content of food, which can contribute a
large proportion of our overall intake, is not supported scientifically at all,” said Yosuke Yamada,
one of the paper’s first authors.
The study, published in the journal Science, assessed the water intake of 5,604 people aged
between 8 days and 96 years old from 23 countries. The research involved people drinking a glass
of water in which some of the hydrogen atoms (氢原子) were replaced by deuterium (氘), a stable
isotope (同位素) of hydrogen that is harmless. The rate of removal of the extra deuterium reveals
how quickly water in the body is turned over.
The study found the measure varied widely depending on a person’s age, gender, activity
levels and surroundings. Energy expenditure is the biggest factor in water turnover, with the
highest values observed in men aged 20 to 35, with an average of 4.2 litres a day, about 0.9 litre
more than that of women of the same age. This decreased with age, averaging 2.5 litres a day for
men in their 90s. Newborn babies turned over the largest proportion (比例), replacing about 28%
of the water in their bodies every day.“This study suggests people just ignore the ‘one size fits all’ recommendation and follow
what their body is telling them,” said Prof John Speakman of the University of Aberdeen, a co-
author, “If 40 million adults in the UK were following the guidelines and drank half a litre of clean
water more than they need each day that’s 20 million litres of wasted water every day. There is a
cost to drinking more than we need even if it’s not a health one.”
32.What can we learn about the 8 glasses of water recommendation?
A.It has been widely accepted. B.It has solid scientific basis.
C.It considers water in food. D.It causes severe water pollution.
33.How did the scientist get the conclusion of their experiment?
A.By assessing water quantity. B.By measuring water turnover rate.
C.By analysing water component. D.By conducting water quality analysis.
34.What can we know from the new finding?
A.Women in their 30s turn over 0.9 litres a day
B.The older a person is, the more water he needs.
C.Newborn babies turn over the largest amount of water.
D.Men turn over more water than women of the same age
35.What could be the best title of the passage?
A.Less water helps you away from doctors.B.You need less water but I want more.
C.Slow down your water turnover. D.There’s no cost to drink more.

(2023·江西上饶·校联考模拟预测)As we walked along the street recently, my friend
suddenly sighed, “How I miss the ice-cream my grandma used to buy me after school!” 36
, which cost her 9.8 yuan, almost 10 limes higher than the “grandma ice cream”.
But it was just one of the fair-priced treats. 37 It was written by a user who claimed
he “randomly picked a plain-looking ice-cream” in a store, and was shocked when the register
showed it was 68 yuan. He bought it anyway, but said that every bite tasted more bitter than sweet.
“Never pick any brand of ice-cream you’re not familiar with,” the Weibo user wrote.
I miss the good old days too, but on second thoughts, I don’t believe that some expensive ice-
cream means the market is “corrupted”. 38 . Consumption upgrades may boost demand
and expensive ice-cream exists because some consumers like it.
Zhao Xuekuan, a senior ice-cream dealer agrees with me. His shop has probably the widest
variety of ice-creams m the market. 39 , but young customers favor fancier ones. They are
quite particular about the ingredients, expecting they provide not only good tastes, but also high
protein and low calories.
40 . It’s a good thing that recently, the State Administration for Market Regulationissued a new rule that goods must be sold with a clearly marked price tag, or the retailer will be
fined up to 100, 000 yuan. Let the fair play carry on and consumers will make their own choices.
A.They don’t choose cheaper ones
B.The other day I read a post on Weibo
C.While walking, she was licking on one
D.The development of a market has its own rules
E.For the past few months, many cities went through lockdown

(2023秋·黑龙江哈尔滨·高三哈尔滨三中校考开学考试)
The telephone rang. Jack answered the call from his mother, “Mr. Richard died last night.
The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel (新闻影片)
as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. It had been some time since Jack had seen the
old man. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved across the country in
pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past
and often no time to spend with his wife and son.
“Jack, did you hear me?”
“Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him.” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d
reminisced (追忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom
told him.
After Jack’s father died, Mr. Richard stepped in to make sure Jack had a man’s influence in
his life and it was Mr. Richard who taught Jack many things. Jack wouldn’t have been in this
business if it hadn’t been for Mr. Richard.
Busy as he was, he returned home and attended the funeral, which was small and uneventful.
Mr. Richard had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before Jack had to return home, he and his mother stopped by to see the old house
next door one more time. Standing in the middle of the room, Jack paused for a moment. It was
like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly
as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture... Jack
stopped suddenly.
“What’s wrong, Jack?” Mom asked.
“Where is the watch, the thing he valued most?” he seemed to ask himself.
