I’ve been motivated — and demotivated — by other folks’ achievements all my life.
When I was a teenager, a neighborhood friend 1 a marathon race. Feeling
motivated, I started running 2 , but then two things happened. First, a girl I met one day
told me she was 3 for a “super,” referring to a 52.4-mile double marathon. Then, the
next day I went on my longest run — 15 miles. To be honest, I 4 it! Between the girl
making my 5 seem small and the pure boredom of jogging, I decided that the only
6 I’d ever run again is if a big dog was running after me!
So I 7 cycling. I got a good bike and rode a lot. I 8 of entering cycle
races until I flew to San Diego to visit my sister. While she was at work one day, I 9
her bike and went for a ride. The 10 : the roads there went through large valleys where
I’d be riding uphill for miles at a time. I’d never faced such 11 . That day, I got 12
by about 100 “local” bikers who were used to such roads. When I got back home, suddenly riding
my bike didn’t seem quite as 13 .
I’ve 14 a lot since then. I’ve come to accept that whatever 15 I set for
myself, they just have to be my own.

Every Friday night the Chevron gas station food mart offers a discount on the leftover food.
To ensure the best selection, my mother and I pile into our old car and 16 in front of the
mart at five p. m. sharp, ready to get our 17 .
Chevron shopping 18 like this: One day my mother suddenly realized that she
had maxed out (透支) almost every credit card except the Chevron card and we needed groceries
for the week. Since our first 19 there, I’ve learned to believe in flexibility. In my life, it
has become necessary to 20 the idea of grocery shopping. My mother and I can no
longer shop at real grocery stores, 21 we still get the necessities.
Grocery shopping at Chevron has its 22 . The worst is when we have so many
items that it takes the cashier what seems like hours to ring up everything. A line of 23
customers formed behind us. It’s that line that 24 the most-the way they look at us. My
mother never notices — or maybe she 25 not to.
I’m 26 to shop there, and I’m afraid of running into someone I know. I once
expressed my fear of being seen shopping at Chevron to my mother, and her eyes shone with
disappointment. I know that I hurt her feelings when I try to 27 our weekly shopping
trips.
And that is why I hold on to the idea of 28 so tightly. Whenever I feel the
29 rise to my face, I remind myself at this point in my life I am struggling does not mean
that I will always struggle. I know that whatever happens, we will always 30 a way to
survive.

By the time he was 24 years old, Imran Nuri quit his job in a bold move, and emptied his
savings account to carry out an ambitious 31 he’d been bearing in mind. Nuri would
drive his car to every state on a 100-day trip to find 1,000 32 and ask them to share one
thing they wish they’d 33 when they were younger. Nuri was hoping for answers that
might help him 34 the rest of his life.
He 35 . But to his shock, he chose a 36 person for the first time. He
met a man, who had a dark look at Nuri. Nuri thought the man was going to 37 him.
Then, doing the most 38 thing he’d done, he introduced himself, “I’m 39
around the country to talk to 1,000 unfamiliar people. I’m asking them for pieces of life advice
about things they wish they knew 40 .” The man remained silent for a minute or so and
41 said, “We should spend more time with our family.”
In Colorado Springs, Colorado, a man in his 50s who had stage 4 terminal cancer told Nuri,
“Life is about the human 42 . There would be no life without social interactions.”
In Tillamook, Oregon, a waitress-a college student told him, “whether it’s changing your
major or changing your whole life path, you don’t have to 43 yourself for taking a step
back and reevaluating your past choices. Just do what you think to be right.”
Nuri found beauty in every place as well as 44 from the people he met. Those
people taught a lot. Now he always puts himself in other people’s shoes even when a person sees
the world 45 .

A few months ago, one of my fellow graduate students was offered an incredible career-building
opportunity. His efforts on a student-led campaign to increase federal funding for basic research
had 46 an invitation to speak on a panel (专家组) conference. It would look great on his
CV (简历). I was happy for him, of course. But I was 47 to him in efforts in campaign. I
felt that I deserved the same opportunity. Yet I hadn’t been 48 and I wasn’t sure
why. Growing up, I had been taught that the way to 49 was to put my head down and
work hard. If my work was good enough, it would speak for itself and I would be 50 .
This view, coupled with a natural 51 , meant that I 52 worked up the nerve to put
myself forward.
However, I decided that I needed to 53 my life again—by becoming my own
biggest advocate.
So, with my heart beating fast, I asked my classmate to ask the conference organizers to
54 me. My mind was filled with 55 . Maybe I didn’t deserve it. Maybe I was being
too ambitious. But my classmates immediately contacted the organizers, who quickly agreed to56 me in. Now I come to understand that I can’t be recognized if I’m invisible. This isn’t a
revolutionary idea which many people are unfamiliar with. I know, but as an introvert (内向的人)
this is my 57 Mount Qomolangma.
I think advocating for myself will always make me a little 58 . But I do plenty of other
uncomfortable things to 59 I’m living my best life, like getting flu shots. I suppose I can
do the same for my 60 .

A comfort zone, particularly for students in high school, serves as a nonrisk, nofailure and
nonrejection zone. It reflects that most teenagers are not willing to extend themselves or take risks
in their life and they even want to escape from their parents.
My first experience of being thrown out of my comfort zone was in my high school. Many
of my friends in the first year had started to experiment, regardless of the results, with alcohol,
drugs or other 61 things. For them, it was 62 to care more about alcohol, parties or
girlfriends/boyfriends rather than their 63 , study or other friends. That was not the casewith me. None of my friends had the determination to 64 their risky behavior, including
pressure in the new group and the new comfort zone of going along with new friends. 65 ,
they simply replaced one comfort zone with another riskier one with potentially severe results.
Those had little 66 for me.
I considered myself to be smarter than my old friends and was trying to develop 67
and diverse interests. I threw myself into my 68 and spent a long time in the library. I took
an active part in community service. I gained confidence and the rewards of my study 69
my old friends wandered in school, with little thought or concern for their 70 . Could they
support themselves in the future? Because of our 71 opinion, interests and values, the
only 72 of our friendship, we chose to end it. I couldn’t 73 their group just to be
accepted.
74 I went through a high school student’s worst experience—having no peer (同
龄人) group.
A quote from the television series Boy Meets World 75 my personal experience
with peer groups: “Lose one friend, lose all friends, but don’t lose yourself.”

English was always my favorite subject. In my freshman year of high school, I could write
a killer composition. In my second year, my 76 allowed me to give spelling tests to the
class. I had wonderful memories of my junior year. Mrs. Alexander appointed me to sit at her desk
and take over the class when she had to leave the room. Only my senior English class was 77
, as we had a teacher right out of college who expected college-level work. Every student received
a “C” or “D” grade the first quarter. But English was still my subject.
I graduated from high school, married early and had children. Confident about my English,
I often helped my kids with their English homework. And I wrote long articles and beautiful
poetry as a columnist for a newspaper. Fifteen years later, I went to college, and because I had
been an “A” student, I remained an “A” student. I 78 up to my own expectations.
Yesterday, I 79 my high school report cards when I was reading old papers. That
bundle of report cards brought back the old days. I remembered sitting in my advisor’s office,
explaining that I had always excelled at English, and complaining that I did not deserve a “D”
from that 80 teacher of my senior year. The advisor was sympathetic but unable to
change a grade.
Reading through my old report cards revealed something else too. I wanted to shred them or
hide them. I was not an “A” student in high school English! Somehow, I had 81 myself
of this, when the grades clearly reflected an 82 student with an occasional “A” or “B”,
but mostly “C”s.
Had I lived up to those grades and 83 myself according to those letters, I would
have never 84 sought my writing career. Had I believed in my early grades instead of
myself, I would have allowed my fear of 85 to defeat my enthusiasm and damage my
creativity. Instead, I viewed my younger self as an “A” English student, except for that
underserved “D”.

I was then in my early twenties. Even though I was armed with a degree in Education,
finding a 86 teaching job was not easy. I had to try some temporary ones.
This year, when a golden opportunity 87 to teach 5th grade students in a local
school. I 88 it and took things seriously. I 89 myself with lesson plans, taught
with enthusiasm, and stayed 90 with the students. I had no hesitation in 91 the
kids when they got the answer right, and encouraged them if they didn’t.
One day when the kids were 92 , a girl approached and handed me a 93
before she went home. On it was a lovely drawing full of childlike wonder, 94 by the
words, “You are the best teacher I have ever had!” It really amazed me that one of my kind
comments had 95 that girl’s heart greatly. I took that note home and 96 put it in a
folder, looking on it as a 97 because it was very important. Anytime I was feeling down I
would look at it and it proved to be a 98 .
That experience showed me the 99 of just a single kind word. It encouraged me to
continue to try my best each day to 100 love and kindness through my words and actions.
Wish the same for others.

I have been engaging in a spot of emotional therapy (治疗) over the last 2 weeks. I make an
effort to try to 116 difficulties in life so that I can feel good within myself and find more
117 for my steps ahead.
The first day here I just couldn’t stop 118 at the breakfast table and another
woman was very kind to me. Most people 119 to be there for each other when needed,
which is highly 120 .
Today one of the older women had a bit of a 121 during lunch and rushed out of
the room with her plate in hand. I asked her if she was OK as she went past me but she could not
answer. So, I 122 to a young girl to go after her to check and see if she was fine. Glad
she did and I really hope it 123 . I can only imagine it is really hard for all of us in one
way or another as we all have our own 124 and do not know each other properly.
Whether we do or don’t get to know each other is another matter and at the end of the day,
it really does not 125 . For now we are all ships in a 126 and are getting
our torn sails repaired before we are able to 127 to more restless waters. Although
some days are easier than others, it takes time, a lot of patience and the right expert 128
.
Please say a little prayer today for those with mental health 129 . Oh yes…
during my first week here, I bought a nice 130 plant at the local market for the TV
room. Today it is in full bloom (开花)! I have learnt so far that every today has special littlemoments.

After twenty-two years raising three children, I was introduced to a concept: the empty nest.
Apparently, this was now my time to 131 into new experiences. Why, then was I not
excited, but 132 ?
For a job opportunity, my husband and I moved to another state. One day, I discovered a
trail only a short 133 from our apartment, I was thrilled and began to use it regularly.
The trail meandered along a river lined with bushes and towering trees. Ducks 134 on
the riverbanks; Canada geese flew overhead; small rabbits bounded across the pathway, 135
into the bushes. These small peaceful scenes provided me with a(n) 136 , but only
slightly lifted me out of my loneliness.
Still, I continued to walk the path. I 137 something new: couples, young and old,
holding hands, chatting as they walked; a father 138 his daughter to ride her two-
wheeler; a woman doing Tai Chi. They all 139 the trail. I became fascinated with thelives of these strangers, yet still wondering if any of them feel 140 ?
One morning, an elderly woman holding the handles of her walker came into view. She
sailed by me in the 141 direction like a marathon runner. I turned around to catch
another glimpse of this one-woman wonder. She was 142 moving forward, not letting
anything hold her back. That’s when it 143 me. Nobody was.
As I walked toward my car, remembering the elderly woman’s energy and 144 , I
made a decision. I would fill my empty nest with 145 . I was ready for the bright future
that stretched before me.
