文档文本内容

When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at
home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of
drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but
meaningless patterns.
In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was
good at it. For the art O-level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still
hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared
talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I
went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish
doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art.
However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were
abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo
(禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a
bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so authoritative that it shook me. It was
a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with
water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I
have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to
friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but
keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of
wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to
take risks and make experiments.
1.How did the author feel about the result of the art exam?

As a clueless freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking
it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from
the course wouldn’t count toward my major. By the end of the session, however, I decided that I
had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories
worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the
teacher asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story.
Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to
write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the
class?” He said he would.
So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite.
Years later, I’d completed a degree in creative writing and was working on a novel when a
literary agent (经纪人) asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft. But I wasn’t comfortable
showing her anything; the novel was far from done.
Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact agents until I have
a complete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the
agent might not remember me after a year.
So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the
opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of thosechapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels.
Determination, focus, perseverance—the qualities that I consider crucial in getting me into
Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only
on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities
to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.

As a little boy, the first time I stepped into the Taekwondo dojang (跆拳道道场), I knew
that I had discovered my interest. The physical training, mental focus, and spiritual development
of Taekwondo drew me in, and I started a journey that would change my life.
My journey began as a White Belt filled with excitement. I was introduced to the basic
skills, forms, and principles of Taekwondo. With each belt promotion (晋级), I faced newchallenges. The training pushed me to test my limits and develop mental strength. Self-control
became the most important part of my training. Early mornings and late nights were spent
improving skills, perfecting forms, and pushing myself to the edge of tiredness. Taekwondo taught
me valuable lessons, not just on the training floor but also in other areas of my life.
The path to the Black Belt was not without challenges. I experienced moments of
frustration (挫折) and wanted to give up. However, it was during these challenging times that I
discovered the power of determination (决心). With the support of my teachers and friends, I
found the strength to push through the hard times. Each challenge became an opportunity for
growth. Dealing with these challenges strengthened my desire to become a Black Belt and
inspired me to keep pushing forward.
Beyond the physical and mental aspects, the art has taught me to treat others with kindness.
It has allowed me to face life’s challenges with a calm and focused mind. Taekwondo has also
taught me the importance of leadership, as I now have the opportunity to guide and inspire junior
students on their own journeys.

James worked as a mechanic in a garage located in the centre of NewYork City. One day,
When he finished his work, it was already very late and the last bus had gone. So James had to
walk home. In order to get home quicker, he decided to take a shortcut through Central Park. It
was dark and there were very few people in the park. James hardly met any one on the path he was
taking. Naturally he had some fear. Robbery and murder were often reported in the
neighbourhood. But James had no other choice.
Then somewhere in the middle of his path, James saw someone coming towards him from
the opposite direction. He could not see the stranger clearly but he could tell it was a man of
average build, just like himself. His fear began to grow. He tried not to look at the stranger and
decided to veer so as to avoid him But when he veered, the stranger veered too. Unfortunately
they veered in the same direction and bumped in passing.
When the stranger had gone, James was a little relieved. However, a few minutes later,
James had a feeling that the bumping could hardly have been an accident. Why did the stranger
veer in the same direction as me? He recalled newspaper reports that thieves pretended to bump
into people and picked their pockets. With this thought, James felt for his wallet in his pocket. It
was gone.
James had no doubt that the stranger was a thief and had taken his wallet. Anger made him
turn around. He caught up with the stranger and bravely demanded his wallet. The man gave it to
him and went away.

way to avoid the truth: He had robbed somebody.

Opening the pages of Liuba Draws Beijing takes you on a fascinating visual journey
through the heart of China’s busy capital city. Within its lively watercolors, traditional hutong, the
grand Summer Palace, and the contemporary charm of Beijing’s Sanlitun and 798Art District all
come alive through the artistic lens of Liuba Vladimirova, more famously known as Liuba Draws.
Vladimirova’s journey from the icy Siberian city of Irkutsk to the vital Beijing started
during her college years, when she commenced with an academic exchange program connecting
her Russian university with Liaoning University in Shenyang, in Northeast China’s Liaoning
Province. It was during this transformative period that she first set foot in Beijing. Since then, her
affection for the city has been undeniable.
Vladimirova’s path as an artist was far from linear (直线的). Since childhood Vladimirova
has developed a love for drawing and painting. However, she pursued a different academic and
professional route, studying Chinese and international trade in college and later working in trade
relations between Russia and China, none of which was directly connected to the world of art. Yet,
Vladimirova’s inner artist remained alive.
In 2015, Vladimirova began crafting a series of illustrations centered around Beijing,
properly named “The Beijing Calendar”. What attracts Vladimirova most is Beijing’s historic
hutong. These narrow alleyways, rich in history and culture, serve as a wellspring (源泉) of
inspiration for her artistry.
Vladimirova’s ability to catch these hidden small differences likely comes from her unique
perspective as an “outsider”— someone who didn’t grow up in Beijing. This fresh perspective
allowed her to arrive in the city with fresh eyes and an eager heart, ready to embrace a new
culture.
17.What do the underlined words “commenced with” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Improved. B.Began. C.Resisted. D.Assessed.
18.What do we know about Vladimirova from paragraph 3?
A.She gave up her dream. B.She won many art prizes several years ago.
C.She was hardworking over her childhood. D.She delayed her artistic career.19.Why does the author mention hutong?
A.To praise Beijing’s architecture. B.To show the inspiration of Vladimirova’s art
making.
C.To state the main contents of an art book. D.To advise tourists to visit Beijing.
20.Which statement best summarizes Vladimirova’s success?
A.Curiosity works wonders. B.Hard work pays off in time.
C.The world is diverse and lively. D.Painting has no national boundaries.
Anxiety has followed me around like a lost dog looking for a bone for years now. I feel it
the most strongly when I’m worried about my health or my daughter’s health. I feel an unusual
sensation and all of a sudden: panic! My worries are not limited to health concerns though, and
they go in the direction of anxiety about the future of the world, worries about my finances, and
fears that I’m not good enough.
Let me go back a few decades, back to when anxiety wasn’t part of my life. When I was a
child, I loved art. I drew and I colored because that’s what I enjoyed. I went to college to become
an art teacher. When I finished school in May of 2001, I had a part-time design job, and after the
event of September 11th, 2001, I knew I needed to travel, to get out of the safe life I was living in
my hometown. That’s when my creative practices fell by the wayside.
Luckily, after the birth of my daughter in 2014, the desire to create came back. At first, I
was using a tiny corner of a bedroom in our rental house to paint. Eventually we bought a house,
and I had the space to spread out, ready to paint whenever the urge struck. That’s when I started
noticing something important: Painting stilled me in a way that nothing else did. It eased my fears
and anxieties in a way other practice (deep breathing, etc) did not, at least not as consistently.
When anxious thoughts start, I know what to do. I head into my studio, grab some materials, and
start creating. Soon enough, the worries are gone and instead my mind is quiet.
I think the reason why painting is so helpful for my anxiety is that, in order for me to be
anxious, I have to be worrying about the future and what it holds. When I’m doing an activity that
requires my full concentration, I have to be in the moment. It doesn’t matter if you’re artistic. Theonly thing that matters is finding a way to be here, in the now, instead of in the unknowable future.

A.What is important is to seize the moment. B.Anxiety may sometimes be beneficial to life.
C.It is necessary to learn some art in childhood.D.Painting is the best way to ease people’s
mind.

D.Sandra Marshall: from a Portrait Painter to an Art Advocate
I write this on a spring morning, in the van I have called home for two years now.
From one small window, I have a view of joggers pounding the sunny path by the Oxford
Canal, and the other looks onto the busy railway line along which trains travel from Southampton
Docks to Birmingham. The woods where I’ve parked my van have grown up between them. This ancient van, a
vehicle designed for freedom and the open road, has proved a stable solution for surviving the
current housing crisis.
I became a travel writer after my studies ended, committing to brief “residencies” with
museums and art centres—where temporary accommodation is often provided in exchange for
producing new work about a community. Over the years that followed, living and working on
location in the polar regions or Scandinavia or the Alps, not settling down for very long, meant
wherever I landed was always “home”.
During the pandemic it was necessary to adopt a more permanent engagement with locality.
Oxford had often drawn me back. It’s a crossroads of reality and the imagination, the perfect city
for a writer.
It takes a surprising amount of work to keep a tiny home in order: buying a used van online;
ensuring the smooth running of a gas cooker and car batteries; fetching water and emptying the
mobile toilet. I began to enjoy taking care of my immediate surroundings. Over the summer, I
worked to turn waste-ground into a wild garden, replacing weeds with wild plants.
I made friends with the self-sufficient boaters living nearby, always ready to share
knowledge on the low-carbon simplicity of life without electricity. I’ve learnt that comfort can be
found away from the bright infrastructure of urban life: in watching the birds that nest in the tree
and the foxes playing in the woods at dawn, in making a cup of coffee on a spring morning.
My step away from conventional housing has been a necessary act of personal economy,
but the benefits include taking nothing for granted, and unexpected delight.
29.Why did the writer make the van his home?
A.Because the feature of the van and that of his occupation are matching.
B.Because the van is equivalent to a crossroads of reality and the imagination.
C.Because the views of joggers and trains outside the van can relieve his pressure.
D.Because living and working on location in the polar regions are appealing to him.
30.What does “immediate surroundings” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.a used van B.a gas cooker C.a wild garden D.a mobile toilet
31.Which of the following is the benefit of unconventional housing?
A.Joining joggers to do exercise. B.Keeping a tiny home in order easily.
C.Improving the economy of Oxford. D.Embracing delightful surprises.32.What’s the writer’s attitude towards living in the van?
A.Cautious. B.Ironical. C.Favorable. D.Neutral.
Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The
landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. My spirits ebb, as they did during
an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. “Just wait,” a neighbour advised. “You’ll wake up
one morning and spring will just be here.”
And look, on 3 May that year I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if
spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues
and greens. Leaves had unfolded and daffodils were fighting their way heavenward.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It
belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark twisted branches stretch out in
unpruned (未经修剪的) abandon. Each spring it blossoms so freely that the air becomes filled
with the scent of apple.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of
spring madness, I set out to remove a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the
tree than neighbours opened their windows and stepped onto their porches(门廊; 走廊). These
were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their
personal gardens.
My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?”
she asked anxiously. Another neighbour frowned as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now,” he
warned. Soon half the neighbourhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had
lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a
living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its
branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder. I couldn’t help recalling
Robert Frost’s words:
The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods
One thaw led to another. Just the other day I saw one of my neighbours at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen
or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We
need to prune that apple tree again.”
33.By saying that “my spirits ebb” in paragraph 1, the author means that _______ .
A.he feels relieved B.he is tired
C.he is surprised D.he feels blue
34.The apple tree mentioned in the passage is most likely to _______ .
A.be appealing only to the author
B.have been abandoned by its original owner
C.be regarded as a delight in the neighbourhood
D.have been neglected by everyone in the community
35.According to paragraph 4, why did the neighbours open their windows and step onto their
porches?
A.They wanted to get to know the author.
B.They were concerned about the safety of the tree.
C.They wanted to prevent the author from pruning the tree.
D.They were surprised that someone unknown was pruning the tree.
36.It can be inferred that the author’s neighbour mentioned in the last paragraph most cared
about _______ .
A.when spring would arrive B.how to pass the long winter
C.the pruning of the apple tree D.the neighbourhood gathering
Sandoval, who comes from Los Angeles, has traveled and filmed in over 50 countries
across seven continents and now lives in China. “In 2008, tired of my studio work in the U.S, I
came to China, thinking I would be here one or two years, but it has turned out to be 16 years!” he
said. He hopes his photographs will inspire others to embark on adventures as well.
Sandoval is a professional photographer and learned commercial photography at what was
then the Brooks Institute of Photography. With the hope of trying something different for himself,
he went to Chengdu in Southwest China to live in October 2008 and has traveled throughout thecountry since then.
In the beginning, he did editorial work for magazines both in and outside Sichuan, such as
Vogue. Then he worked with the Sichuan tourism department to produce travel brochures, and also
on ad campaigns for destinations for corporate companies.
To him, Chengdu is the capital of a laid-back lifestyle. He was delighted to see that
residents, dressed stylishly or comfortably, strolled in the streets “as slowly as snails”. Almost a
“walking encyclopedia” of Chengdu, Sandoval covered every corner of Chengdu and recorded
Chengduese and their lives with his camera, listening to the sound of mahjong tiles being shuffled
and music from traditional stringed instruments.
He also goes from place to place with his heavy travel kit. The varied culture and vast,
beautiful land has kept him in China much longer than he had planned in the beginning. He
remembers a wide range of adventures like exploring a local vineyard and local wine in Yinchuan
City, a riding performance by a Mongolian ethnic group in the Shuidonggou Horse Riding Show,
and then the totally different experience of visiting the Hainan Free Trade Port in the south.
He thinks he has done a lot in “this beautiful and vast country” with his “travel photos”. “I
try to show people the beauty of where I go. I try to inspire them to travel and go to places. I’m
hoping to do more international work,” he said.
37.Why did Sandoval come to China?
A.He was not good at studio work. B.He wanted to step out of the comfort zone.
C.He had a preference for international work. D.He was attracted by the picturesque nature
of China.
38.What does the underlined word “laid-back” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Leisurely. B.Simple. C.Luxurious. D.Healthy.
39.Sandoval’s experiences around China are mentioned in Paragraph 5 to show _______.
A.Sandoval’s diverse hobbies B.Sandoval’s desire for new careers
C.Sandoval’s superb photo technique D.Sandoval’s fascination for Chinese culture
40.What is the writing purpose of this passage?
A.To call on readers to take up photography.
B.To praise Sandoval for spreading Chinese culture.
C.To facilitate the development of tourism in Chengdu.
D.To introduce the experience of a professional photographer.参考答案:

gone and instead my mind is quiet. (就在那时,我开始注意到一件重要的事情:绘画以一种其
