Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help?
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts
local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain
regions and destinations. 1 Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be
unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure
on the places we visit and improve our experience.
●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With
so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go
somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 2
●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go
somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s
actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of
less-visited options to choose from. 3 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a
popular destination’s lesser-known sights?
● 4 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush
hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular
place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what
makes a destination special in the first place. 5 You may be amazed how much closer
you’ll feel to the people there.
A.Visit during off-peak times.
B.So, should we stop traveling?
C.Travel for you and no one else.
D.Can overtourism be avoided then?
E.You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F.You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G.Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.
Have you always wanted to visit Disney World or Disneyland, but were waiting for
different reasons? The happiest place on earth isn’t far out of reach. 6 .Disney gets bad fame for raising their ticket prices often. Throughout much of the 2010s,
Disney raised fees at almost double the rate of inflation (通货膨化), according to the Wall Street
Journal. 7 . In February 2020, Disneyland, in California, raised prices on its one-day
park tickets about 5 percent. This is a rather large price increase because it’s the first time
Disneyland park tickets have crossed $200.
When Disney World opened, staying at the Bora Bora Bungalows cost $29 per night. Now
it can cost as much as $3,400! 8 ? Disney isn’t hunting for money, with a net income in
2019 of $10.44 billion. But here are some reasons:
9
Since Walt Disney World opened in Orlando in 1971, Disney has expanded faster and
faster, with new parks and attractions, pulling ahead of the competition and attracting double the
visitors of its closest competitor.
To Attract Wealthier Customers
10 , with private tours dinners with princesses, and the opening of a five-star hotel.
“They know that the money is in the upper class, the top 10 percent, the top 1 percent.” Niles says.
“They’ve created a wide variety of new products to try, and, honestly, earn more money from the
rich people.”
A.To occupy the market
B.How does Disney become popular
C.So why are the tickets getting so expensive
D.To earn more money from different people
E.However, its continuously rising ticket prices might make you frustrated
F.Disney has also increasingly attracted people with more money to spend
G.In fact, both U. S. parks have already made price increase in 2020
Why Can’t People Stop Touching Museum Exhibits (展品)?
When visiting the British Museum, you can see visitors touch ancient bowls even though
the museum rules say no touching is allowed. Museum guards say it’s impossible to stop people
from breaking the no-touch rule. 11
Most museum-going is still a mainly visual (视觉的) experience for visitors to admire the
artworks. 12 But over the past few years, more and more museums have been working toinclude additional senses, like sounds and smells. But touch, especially, is only allowed in certain
areas, like the Louvre’s Touch Gallery, or the British Museum’s Hands On Desks.
13 Before there were museums, there were curiosity rooms filled with a collection
of interesting objects from around the world. When people visited the collection, the objects were
passed around. Museums continued with this spirit of openness at first.
But as museums grew, the spirit no longer existed. When you’ve got 4 million visitors a
year, you can hardly have every body touching something. People are awkward and likely to
damage the artworks. So the rule against touching artworks makes great sense. Smaller museums
still sometimes encourage visitors to touch their objects. 14
Why are we so unwilling to keep our hands to ourselves? Some people just want to make
sure the artworks are real. But there’s a larger truth. 15 Visitors say that they want to feel
how deep an engraving (雕刻) goes, so as to better understand the artistic skills. In this way,
touching is part of trying to somehow make contact with the past.
A.Touch was allowed in museums at first.
B.It helps to show respect for the ancient artists.
C.You stop 100 people touching and there are 200 more.
D.Visitors learn more about objects from reading signs around.
E.You can’t really learn more about objects unless you touch them.
F.But the bigger ones prefer to advertise themselves as no touching.
G.Museums have come a long way since the time of the curiosity room.
Most children now chat daily either online or through their mobile phones. 16
Some are shy in real life but are confident to communicate with others online; others find support
from people of their own age on relationship issues, or problems at home.
Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can cause problems, such as bullying
(恃强凌弱) or arguments. 17 But there are also a few people who use the Internet for
illegal aims. Children must be made aware of both the good things and the dangers.
18 Just as you decide which TV programs are suitable, you need to do the same
for the websites and the chat rooms your children visit. Remind your children that online friends
are still strangers. Reminding them of the risks will keep them alert (警惕的).
19 So it’s likely that your children may know more than you do. We get leftbehind when it comes to the latest gadgets and the interactive areas of websites, like chat rooms
and message boards. 20 Chatters love to use abbreviations (缩略语) such as: atb (all
the best), bbfn (bye bye for now), Idk (I don’t know), xlnt (excellent).
A.Going online is great fun.
B.Computer studies are part of schoolwork now.
C.The language of chat is strange to many parents, too.
D.There are some websites that are not suitable for the children.
E.To keep children safe, your management must cover the family computer.
F.They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world.
G.Surfing the Internet takes up too much of the time that should be spent on lessons.
I’m sure most of us enjoy going on holiday. It’s a break from the routine. This might
involve sightseeing and enjoying local culture, or it could be kicking back and lazing on a beach.
21
This type of vacation combines the flight, accommodations, transfers (换乘) and sometimes
the services all into one booking. 22 However, as a few big brands closed, many are now
purchased on websites. Travel journalists explain that the benefit of a proper package holiday is
that “by booking flights and accommodations in a single business from a tour operator, you
transfer all the risk to the company”. 23 And if the operator goes wrong, you can get a
refund.
24 A package holiday can be great value. A tour company can book airplane seats
and hotel rooms together, which means they can negotiate better discounts for the
holidaymakers. There are often deals on food and drink too, with some companies offering all-
inclusive packages — although this can discourage someone from eating outside the hotel.
But with airlines offering cheap flights and websites offering cheap accommodations, the
package holiday isn’t always the way of choice. 25 While that might suit some, the
package holiday offering has developed to be better. And, in the UK, the package holiday is
growing in popularity, particularly among younger travellers. The Association of British Travel
Agents said, “There is a greater emphasis on personalisation, where holidaymakers can mix and
match what they want to include instead of purchasing a predefined package.” The only problemis deciding where to go!
A.It’s also bad news for travel agents.
B.That is why it is called a package holiday.
C.Some of us are motivated to be independent backpackers.
D.This means it has to sort things out during the whole process.
E.They were traditionally sold by travel agents on the high street.
F.This protection can give you peace of mind, but there are other benefits.
G.Whatever we choose, the most convenient way to do it is go on a package holiday.
Traveling is a great way to experience new cultures and landscapes, learn about different
ways of life, and simply have an adventure. It can also help you open your mind to new ideas and
perspectives. 26 They provide insight, tips, and inspiration for people looking to
explore the world around them. From detailed guides to personal stories, these books offer readers
a way to experience the world without ever leaving their homes.
One book that perfectly captures (描述) the spirit of travel is The Distance Between Us by
Reyna Grande. 27 Through her moving writing style, Grande paints a vivid picture of
the struggles and joys of crossing a physical and cultural border.
Her book has a great impact on readers. 28 By sharing her own experiences,
Grande offers hope and inspiration to anyone looking to take the leap and explore the world
around them.
One of the greatest benefits of traveling to places inspired by books for students is the
opportunity to explore and learn about many different cultures. Immersing (使沉浸) yourself in
unfamiliar surroundings can help open your eyes to different ways of life. 29
Being able to communicate effectively with those from different backgrounds is essential
for any student, especially in today’s international society. 30 It can further improve
conversation and fluency (流畅).
Lastly, by traveling to places inspired by books, students will gain a deeper understanding
of the works that inspired them to take the journey in the first place.
A.Meeting new people can be invaluable.
B.That’s why there are so many books about traveling.
C.Literary works often include ideas beyond a reader’s imagination.D.It can even help you gain insight into why people live differently from you.
E.It’s an inspiring story that will stay with them long after they finish the last page.
F.Traveling abroad helps students practice using their language skills in real-life situations.
G.In this book, Grande describes her journey from Mexico to America and how it shaped her
life.
Why Traveling Is Essential for Personal Growth
There’s something about traveling that stirs up a sense of adventure within us all. It’s like a
call to explore new places, meet new people, and create unforgettable memories. 31 . It’s
also an essential tool for personal growth.
Giving you confidence
Traveling, especially for the first time, can be challenging. If you stay in the same place for
a long time you become fearful of any change. 32 . But what if you take a risk and do it?
You’ll definitely gain more confidence about traveling. The more challenges you come across
during your travels, the stronger you become.
Redefining your comfort zone
It’s easy to get stuck in a routine and stay within your comfort zone. 33 . By
actively seeking out new experiences, you’ll discover sides of yourself that you never knew
existed and create unforgettable memories along the way.
Taking risks and facing challenges
While traveling, it’s not uncommon to encounter obstacles, but it’s all about how we
overcome them and accept changes as part of the journey. 34 . This can be as simple as
navigating (导航) a new city or as complicated as communicating with locals in a foreign
language.
35
It can be easy to get caught up in busy daily life. When you travel, you’re forced to slow
down and really enjoy each experience. You get to enjoy all the little moments that make life so
special, like sunsets in a new city or quiet conversations with strangers. Traveling helps us
appreciate the beauty of the world around us and be grateful for what we have right here, right
now.
A.Appreciating the present momentB.Connecting with different cultures
C.Naturally, we appreciate what we have already accomplished
D.But traveling isn’t just about having fun and taking pretty pictures
E.We need to adapt and find creative solutions to unexpected situations
F.As a result, new places, faces or routines don’t seem as profitable as they really are
G.But pushing yourself outside of those boundaries can lead to rewarding experiences
Saudi is the largest country in the Middle East and one of the fastest-growing tourism
destinations in the world. 36 . ALULa and Diriyah are just a few examples of these
heritage sites at the heart of Saudi’s destination development. Natural possessions are also a
fundamental part of Saudi’s heritage and sustainability with preservation high on the agenda.
NEOM will generate zero carbon emissions and Diriyah will welcome 27 million visitors while
preserving the UNESCO site at Turaif and restoring Wadi Hanifah. 37 .
Adventuring in deserts
Part of what’s special about the Arabian Peninsula-and specifically Saudi-is its desert.
38 . From adrenaline-packed excursions like dune bashing and sand-boarding to
more serene, history-inspired activities such as camel riding and Arabian camping, the desert in
Saudi serves as a canvas for more than just adventure travelers.
39
Visit the country’s many mosques and traditional markets to experience a rhythm of life that
has little changed over the centuries. And, for a taste of modern Saudi, don’t miss the urban
districts and entertainment centers where people meet to shop, dine or just spend time with
friends. Explore the different regions to experience the multicultural variety of foods, lifestyles
and customs.
Exploring Riyadh
Riyadh is the birthplace of today’s Saudi9 where tradition meets 21st century vision.
40 . The capital city’s fascinating centuries-old history can still be found within its
atmospheric bazaars(市场), impressive museums and ancient architecture. Riyadh Season, one of
the world’s largest lifestyle festivals is a celebration of Riyadh through every touch point, music,
art, theatre and food, spanning several zones across the city and perfect for every visitor.
A.Visiting traditionsB.Experiencing multi-culture
C.In fact, Saudi is home to the largest sand desert on earth
D.Here are some inspiring recommendations for exploring this diverse country
E.Saudi has 6 UNESCO World Heritage sites and more than 10,000 archaeological sites
F.Saudi has introduced electronic visa measures to 49 countries to promote its tourism
G.It is a thriving metropolis with world-class dining, art and shopping, and a growing cultural
scene
International Travel
International travel can be a fantastic way to see the world. However, even if you want your
journeys to be as exciting as possible, you don’t expect any unhappy things to happen. 41
Health is the most important thing when you are planning to travel abroad. When you’re
going to travel abroad, you may need to get special vaccines (疫苗) to protect you from diseases.
If you’re going to any outoftheway areas, remember to bring the commonly used medicines with
you. 42 So you don’t run out of them while you’re abroad.
43 For example, if you plan to drive on trips, find out how driving rules may differ.
Some countries may have unusual rules or laws that you might break by mistake. So try to learn
more about the countries you’re going to visit.
Learn some local language. It’s important to learn something basic (基本的) like “Hello”
“Thank you”, and “Where is the bathroom?”. 44 You can check the dictionary first and then
ask people simple questions.
Copy your travel documents (文件). All your travel documents should be copied. We live in
a digital (数字的) world now. 45 You’d better have the digital copies handy. But make sure to
protect your personal information.
A.Good travel is the result of good planning.
B.Basic rules and laws differ in many countries.
C.It’s easy to get digital copies of these documents.
D.Consider buying travel insurance before you travel.
E.There are things you should know about international travel.
F.If you can’t remember them, bring a small dictionary with you.
G.If you take some medicine every day, make sure you pack enough.A 2021 report from Habitat for Humanity International found that SDG 11.1 was actually
regressing. We are seeing stagnation instead of progress toward the goal.
Governments must prioritize adequate housing, especially for those struggling to survive in
today’s overcrowded settlements. 46
Here are three steps that governments — and leaders in both the public and private sectors
— can take to alleviate this growing housing crisis:
1. Prioritize land tenure (占有) security
Ensure residents of informal settlements have secure rights to the land they inhabit.
This has already happened on a large scale in countries such as Honduras, where civil
society organizations and governments came together to form diverse commissions that developed
policy recommendations around housing and land, negotiating approval of the recommendations
and then monitoring their implementation. 47 .
2. 48
For residents of Freetown’s informal settlements and countless other cities, traditional
avenues of housing finance are simply not accessible. 49 They exhibit similar characteristics
to traditional mortgage loans, but their smaller size helps make them more accessible to families
with lower incomes.
3. Strengthen climate-resilient housing
50 .The public and private sectors can work together to support and invest in
community start-ups specializing in low-cost, climate-resilient homes and locally sourced building
materials. For example, an NGO based in Sierra Leone, Home Leone, has over the past 5 years
been developing affordable housing utilizing low-cost construction techniques, and providing
facilities to meet the basic needs of communities and an integrated approach to housing
development for low-income communities.
We must act now to pave a stronger foundation for the more than 10 billion people expected
to inhabit our cities by 2050. This starts with the urgent improvement of housing in rapidly
expanding informal settlements worldwide. This long-overdue investment will more than pay for
itself by building more prosperous and equitable communities for generations to come.
A.Expand finance for housing
B.Revolutionize mortgage loansC.Informal settlements are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change
D.That means increasing financial commitments by an order of magnitude and making
meaningful policy changes.
E.But the situation has changed a lot.
F.Through their technical assistance, more than 1 million people have improved access to their
land rights
G.Microloans offer hope by providing individuals with the means to access capital for housing
improvements and upgrades.参考答案:
