When I decided to buy a house in Europe ten years ago, I didn't think too long. I liked
traveling in France, but when it came to picking my favorite spot to 1 , Italy was the clear
winner.
During my first visit to Italy, I 2 to ask for directions or order in a restaurant. But
every time I tried to 3 a sentence of Italian together, the locals smiled at me and 4
my language skills. That encouragement helped me to get through the language 5 . After I
made Italy my permanent home, I discovered how 6 Italians are. Neighbors will bring me
freshly made cheese and will come to my door to 7 me to close the window in my car
when rain is coming. It's these small 8 of kindness that make a new country feel like
home.
As a foodie, the way to my heart is through my stomach, and nowhere fuels my 9
quite like Italy. Each town has its own traditional 10 , and every family keeps a recipe
passed from one generation to another. Families 11 for big meals on Sundays,
birthdays, and whatever other excuses they can 12 . These meals are always 13
by laughter and joy. Whatever 14 life in Italy might have, the problems are 15
once you sit down to a big meal with friends and family.

Some started to run. A woman sobbed beside me, her husband dragging her along by the
arm. Families begged for a 46 in vehicles(车辆) with no space, and cried when they were
47 .
Finally 48 it to the slightly higher ground of the evacuation(撤离、疏散) zone, it
took me a few minutes to find Lauren among the crowds. Holding me and crying, she told me of
her own walk twenty minutes 49 . Somehow, she had 50 to get back inside the
airport before it was locked down, throwing our bags onto a trolley(手推车) and pushing it all the
way to where we stood.
She was extremely tired, physically and emotionally, 51 finally calmed down
enough to ask a simple question: “what happens now?”
I had no idea. Rumors(谣言) were flying around the crowd; 52 being spread far and
wide. A six-meter tsunami was 53 our way. We were safe? No, we weren’t. People would
be trapped in their hotels for days.
In short, nobody had a clue. The authorities(官方) were doing their best, 54 water-
and later, food —to everyone, but they couldn’t provide the one thing people were most 55
for: information.
Finally, an announcement was made that the 56 had passed, and if there were no
further quakes, we would be free to go in two hours. The airport would not reopen that 57
and buses would turn up at some point to take us to Phuket Town.
Suddenly, another announcement was made. Four hours after it closed, the airport was
going to reopen in half an hour and our flights would 58 at some point after that. Some
of the airport staff got into minivans(小型货车) and headed away.Happy to be alive, we almost 59 back through security and into the terminal(航

Afterword: After I started queuing at 4 am, we were 60 enough to get on the first
flight to Chiang Mai the next morning.

On a Monday morning, I parked my car outside my doctor’s clinic. I felt 106 and I

After I returned to my car, I shut the car door. I started 110 uncontrollably. My doctor
said I had severe depression and needed to take medicine. I had to make some big 111 to get
better.
Still sobbing, I was 112 to hear a knock on my car door. A slim lady with short fair

Run Away, Don’t Delay
One night, my son was watching his big screen TV alone, and I decided to join him. He was
watching a show in which there were college students going to a get-together in Washington DC,
and 121 the thousands who gathered there to celebrate something. When they got there,
they started becoming 122 in drinking, and doing drugs. I didn’t want to watch it any
more, so got up and went to bed.
About 3:30 a.m., I awoke, and lay there thinking about the 123 , and a poem beganforming in my mind, which began as, “Whenever sin (something wrong) comes calling, or
knocking at your door, run away, don’t delay, for sin is like a magnet, and it will pull you down.
Run away, do not 124 .” As I lay there, there was music which 125 it, and I knew
that there was no way I would remember it by 126 , so I got up and sat at the table, trying
to put down both the words and the music which came to me at the time. 127 the pattern
was set, and I had the notes written down in my notebook, the 128 of the poem came to me
as well.
When it got 129 , I decided to sit down at the piano and began trying to play it. My
family came into the sitting room and I told them about the song, and wanted to 130 it
with them. They all liked it, and so several times that day, I sang it again, and played it again,
trying to fix it in my 131 .
Later, I wanted to put the song on paper 132 just the little dots in my notebook
indicating how high and how 133 to go. Not knowing how to do that, I 134
the song, and then sent it to my sister, Jennie, who had written many songs using her own poetry
and music, and soon, here came the music and words all done up 135 . I was so glad.

Instead of looking at nature, I 136 my e-mail. Instead of paddling an old boat, I
followed my Twitter feed (简讯). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four 137
each morning.
And that was the problem:I was acting 138 I were still in the office. My body
was on vacation but my head wasn’t.
So this year I made up my mind to try something 139 : getting away from the
Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m not good at self-control. But I was determined. I
started by 140 the iPad to my wife. Then, a stroke of luck: The cell phone signal at our
cabin (小木屋) was worse than in the past, meaning that I couldn’t cheat. I was 141 ,
forced to carry out my plan. Largely cut off from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper
websites, I had little way to connect to the world 142 radio—and how much radio can
one listen to, really? I had no choice but to do what I had planned to do all along:read books.
This experience has had a 143 ending—for now, at least. With determination and
the strong support of my wife, I succeeded in my vacation struggle against the Internet. I 144
realized that it was me, of course, not the iPad, that was the problem.
I knew I had 145 when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted
to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “Don’t need it,” I said. 146 , as we return to post-vacation
situation, a test begins: Can I 147 when I’m back at work? And I don’t plan to
148 my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation (诱惑) to check my e-
mail every five minutes, 149 often leads to following my Twitter feed.
