Researchers agree we all need enough money to cover basic needs like housing and food, but there is no clear
answer on how much money is enough to make humans happy. One 2010 study suggests a yearly income of
$75,000 is the magic number. After that, higher income didn’t lead to greater happiness. However, other studies

suggest that there isn’t an exact amount of money that ensures happiness. Here are a few suggestions on how to get
the most happiness out of your spending.
Experiences make us happier
A new dining room might bring less joy than an exciting experience like a vacation or even a nice meal But
Cornell University psychology professor Tom Gilovich says that buying an experience will probably make you
much happier.
For one thing, humans will get used to that dining table or the bigger house soon. But experiences are special
and connect us to other people.
Beyond that, we are more likely to compare things we own than to compare experiences. It’s easy to compare
the size of the house, but experiences can be personal. “You build your own experiences around you, which means
you get your own unique memories and your own special social connections. And all these things lead to
happiness,” says Gilovich.
Time is worth the money
Don’t want to clean your bathroom? If you can afford to buy your way out of the tasks you hate, you should.
Buying time back allows people to take part in activities that bring them joy. And a study suggests that buying time
brings emotional rewards.
Spending on others
Just like spending on experiences, “prosocial” spending, giving to charity (慈善机构) or treating a friend to
coffee, fulfills our natural need to connect with others. “It’s one way for us to build and support our social
relationships. Giving to others makes us happy. And the happier we are, the more likely we are going to do it
again,” says Lara Akin, a famous social psychologist.

The blue morpho butterfly (蓝闪蝶) is very ___45___ because its wings can reflect (反射) light and produce
a bright blue color.Wang Wanlin and his team at Shenzhen University noticed this wonder of nature and they’ve
looked beyond it.
The team came up with a possible answer to a modern problem: how to keep our cars cool without ___46___
a sense of beauty. In answer, the team designed a type of thin film (薄膜). It acts almost like the reflective paints on
the market, but there is a key ___47___: This one offers many bright colors.
The coating (涂层) has three skins. The top skin is made from titanium (钛), silicon (硅) and oxygen. The two
below are made from special glass and a thin silver mirror. The glass skin can give the film a look just like the blue
butterfly’s wings.
When traditional paint takes in light, its temperature rises. That’s why, on a sunny day, the inside of a car can
feel like an oven. The team’s idea was to design the film to scatter (分散) light and then cool down the paint. And
the team didn’t ___48___ there. They continued to find out how to control reflection to change the color of the
coating.
Wang and his team made coating test products in several colors. They put them under the burning sun for
seven hours. The researchers kept an eye on their temperatures. They found that all the test products stayed about
2℃ cooler than the air around them. Their cooling ability became much clearer when the researchers tested them
directly on a car. A car that used traditional paint reached 75℃. The team’s test products ___49___ to keep the

Vanuatu is a nation of small islands in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But
for those interested in a___51___ and sport, there are a lot of exciting and dangerous activities on these islands.
Among the list, the top two most popular activities are volcano (火山) surfing and land diving.
Volcano Surfing
On Tanna Island, Mount Yasur rises 300 meters into the sky. Yasur is one of Vanuatu’s few a___52___
volcanoes. It erupts (爆发) almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, both locals and
t___53___ have climbed this mountain to visit the top. Recently, people have also started to climb Yasur to surf the
volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways, it’s very different. A volcano
surfer’s goal is to e___54___ the erupting volcano—without being hit by flying rocks! It’s fast, fun and dangerous
—the p___55___ extreme sport!
Land Diving
Most people are familiar with bungee jumping. But did you know that bungee jumping started on Pentecost
Island in Vanuatu almost 15 centuries ago? The original activity—called land diving—is part of a religious
ceremony. A man ties two tree vines around his ankles. He then climbs a wooden tower around 20-30 meters high,
crosses his arms and jumps headfirst. The goal is to touch the earth with the top of his head without breaking the
vines or hitting the ground hard. Every spring, local boys and men s___56___ perform this amazing test of
bravery. Women are not allowed to dive, but they support the divers by dancing and singing at the bottom of the
tower. Many foreigners come to the island every year to watch this ancient t___57___ .

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)

Not long ago, two of my grandchildren came over for a Sunday night family dinner. They walked in and made
straight for the sofa to lie down. Aged 10 and 12, they pulled out their smartphones and started gaming. It saddens
me to see them, and so many other kids today, define (界定) gaming as play.
When I was a kid, I knew how to play. When I wanted a metal pedal car (踏板车) like some of my rich
friends, my father made me one out of wood. It had wooden wheels and was pushed along the sidewalk using a
broken hockey (曲棍球) stick on the back. At first, I was embarrassed by the homemade toy. But I soon began to
like it when my friends all wanted a ride. Later, he made me a high jump stand. Dad just loved building things, or
he really loved me, or maybe a little of both.
In my neighborhood, we didn’t have much to play with. For entertainment, we had to get creative. We put up
tents in the backyard and camped out. At night, we explored the streets. We once went on a week-long bike trip to
Lake Huron (it’s 220 kilometers away).
My grandchildren have no idea how much fun these activities can be. That Sunday night, after dinner, I
decided to take them outside to show them “something different”. The first response was, “Why did we have to
put our shoes on and go outside?” “Because I wanted to show you something,” I said and picked up my Frisbee
(飞盘), “I thought we could go outside and throw the frisbee around.”
I got a slow and unwilling “Sure” for my efforts.
With some further unwillingness, we walked out into the street and began throwing the frisbee back and forth
badly. “Keep your arm straight,” I taught helpfully.
Slowly, we ________ and hit the neighbor’s car only three times. It’s amazing how much a Frisbee hurts when
your fingers are cold, but we were making progress. My grandson found three excuses to go inside. Each time,
though, his grandma kicked him back out. We played until the neighbour came to check on his car.
It was a great success, I think, but you cannot win a war by winning just one battle.
