The historical drama Swords Into Plowshares(《太平年》)takes
us back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period(五代十国
时期),an era between the Tang and the Song dynasties. It was a time
of war and chaos. Watching it, we can'thelp but wonder: How can people
beat swords into plowshares(犁头)—end war and achieve peace?
The era lasted only a little more than half a century, but it was one of the most violent times in
Chinese history. The land was split(分裂)into different parts. Whoever controlled the army could
take over by force. Many cities were burned to ashes, and people suffered. Many were killed or
forced to leave their homes.
The drama follows Qian Hongchu(钱弘俶),the last king of Wuyue(吴越).In 978,near the
end of his reign(统治), he faces a difficult decision. He can either fight to keep his kingdom,or
give up the land to protect the people. To avoid more deaths,he chooses to hand over Wuyue and
join the Song dynasty, helping to unify China.
Some might call this a defeat, but the show invites us to see it differently. In a world where most
rulers fought for land, wealth, and honour,Qian put his people first. Yes, it is a defeat for Qian, but
it is also the bravest choice—to put down the swords and let peace win.

An assassin(刺客)moves through a dark world. Steel clashes. It feels like a kung fu movie,

Kong in the 1970s and later. The game encourages players to use anything around them to fight.
There is even a 5 about this: “Don't fight Jackie Chan in the supermarket! You’re not going to
win because he has so many things to use to fight.” More importantly, the game is about the “spirit
of wuxia”. This means it's not only about how you fight, but also why you fight. Battles are not just
cool action scenes(动作戏). They are about the character's 6 —fighting for your beliefs and
the people you love.
While the game is set in a(n) 7 world, its style mixes in modern ideas. The characters,
weapons, and architecture are all 8 on traditional Chinese culture, but the colours are darker.
The music also mixes old Chinese sounds with modern rock music to 9 a powerful feeling.

foods are high in calories and trans fats(反

effects on your health.
Therefore, we'd better eat fewer fried
foods.
Unlike most other cooking methods, deep
frying adds a lot of calories. Because when
foods are fried in hot oil, they lose water and
absorb fat.
Deep frying also changes the chemical
structure(结构)of fats. It turns them into trans
fats. Trans fats are formed when oils are heated
to very high temperatures during cooking. As
a result, fried foods are very likely to contain
trans fats.
I.Answer the questions.

In the middle of a desert in California, one company is trying to
solve two problems at once.
Problem one is “Energy demand rises at night”. Problem two
is “"Electric vehicle(EV) batteries contain a lot of precious metals”.
It takes mountains of energy to get these metals from the Earth, and
as time goes on, the battery's mileage range drops. Drivers often replace their cars long before the
batteries stop working completely.
B2U Storage Solutions is reusing these old batteries to store clean energy. "It's pretty simple,"
said Rachel Harper from B2U. They use a solar farm with rows of solar panels(面板).Next
to them are white trailers(拖车)holding over 1,000 used EV batteries. These batteries still hold
60-70of their original charge capacity. They store energy produced by the solar panels during
the day.
When sunlight hits the photovoltaic cells(光伏电池)in the panels, the energy is collected
and converted into a form the batteries can store. At night, the energy is sent to California's power
grid(网).
B2U makes money because solar power's price varies according to the time of day. It's cheaper
when the sun is up. It's more expensive when it has to be stored in a battery for later use after the
sun sets. As Los Angeles plans to use only renewable energy by 2045,they are willing to pay that
extra price.
Currently, B2U doesn't face much competition because there aren't many old EV batteries
available yet. But that's changing. "Only about 30,000 EVs were sold in the early years, but now
over two million are sold each year," said co-founder Freeman Hall.

Some music videos have become very popular online. They
sound very much like the works of the Singaporean singer Stefanie
Sun(孙燕姿).But in fact, they were created through a piece of AI
software called Sovits. Sovits is very easy to use. Its users can clone
an“AI singer” with just a few audio clips(片段).
What do people think of this technology? Many, including some singers, are worried. This
technology, they say,may make it harder to detect fake singing.
What's more, the improper use of “AI singers” may be illegal. "Some people use AI to clone
a singer's voice without his or her permission. They then put it on public display. This violates
the singer's rights," said lawyer Li Qiang. Even worse, some people may use “AI singers” for bad
purposes.
On the other hand, "AI singers” can be used for good. The technology can “bring back"the
voices of those who have passed away. For example, it can restore the voices of deceased(死去的)
singers, such as Teresa Teng(邓丽君)and Michael Jackson. This can provide comfort to their fans
and loved ones.
In addition, some musicians are open to “AI cloning”. Canadian singer Grimes is one of them.
She says people are welcome to use AI to clone her voice for creative purposes. And some other

singers are interested in how they may be able to work with AI.
In short, an“AI singer” can be used for good or bad. It depends on the choice of the user. For
this reason, regulations on related issues should be improved as soon as possible.
Choose the best answer.
1.What is Sovits mainly used for?
A. Writing new songs.
B.Creating AI singers.
C. Making music videos.
D.Detecting fake singing.
2.According to the lawyer, what action is against the law?
A. Using AI to write songs.
B. Creating an AI singer software.
C.Listening to music made by AI.
D. Cloning a singer's voice without permission.
3.How can AI singers be used in a positive way?
A.By replacing live concerts.
B.By creating new music styles.
C.By making singers more famous.
D.By restoring voices of deceased singers.
4. What is Grimes'attitude toward AI cloning?
A. She is open to it.
B. She is strongly against it.
C. She is not interested in it.
D. She is very worried about it.
5. What is the main idea of the article?
A.AI singers will replace human singers soon.

I still remember my first Wimbledon in 1982—it was also my
first time working there as a line judge(司线裁判). Since then, I've
only missed two tournaments(锦标赛).But next year, everything
will change. An AI system will take our place. I felt heartbroken
when I heard the news.
When I was young, I loved playing tennis. During one Wimbledon, I saw an ad from the
Professional Tennis Umpires(裁判员)Federation. They were looking for new members. I decided
to try,and after just 30 minutes of training, I got the job. The PTUF had very high standards. We
had to stand and walk in certain ways on the court.
The pay wasn't high, but we didn't do it for money—we did it for the love of tennis. You started
at small events and slowly moved up. Being chosen for Wimbledon was a dream come true for
every tennis lover. Now, some of my colleagues won't renew their licenses since they can't work
at Wimbledon anymore. I'm worried that smaller tournaments will soon have trouble finding line
judges.
A human judge brings something special to the game. We help keep traditions alive and make
the court feel complete. When spectators watch a discussion between the line judge and the umpire,
they learn more about tennis. All of this willbe lost.
Of course, humans
make mistakes sometimes.
But we always try our best
to be fair. Fairness means
everything to us.
It's sad to think I won't
work at Wimbledon again.
I'll always love tennis,
but I don't think I can go
back just as a spectator—it
wouldn't feel the same.

twice as fast as the quickest trains in the U.K.
This amazing car was built by an engineer named Stephen Wallis. His love of fast vehicles
began when he was a child. "It goes back to when I was eight years old and got my first radio-
controlled car,"Stephen said.
How did he make it? Stephen worked for over a year and used 3D printing to make many of its
parts. Interestingly, the car does not have one big engine. Instead, it uses four powerful drone motors
(无人机马达)to reach high speeds.
One of the biggest challenges was keeping the car on the ground. At such high speeds, even a
smallbump(路面颠簸)could make the car fly into the sky. So, Stephen had to design its body
carefully to keep the car on the ground.
Finally, he took The Beast to a speed event(速度赛)in North Wales, where it beat the old
record by 16 miles per hour! Stephen won a Guinness World Record(吉尼斯世界纪录)and he

company aims to improve people's shopping
experience. The ice cream shop is just the
beginning. "We'd love to see robots in every
store,"she adds.
In a recent Australian survey, half of the
workers said their jobs had changed because of
automation. But Orlova says Niska's robots were
not created to take the place of human workers.
Instead, they were designed to improve the
customer experience. "Robots can't completely
replace human beings. However, robots are
good at doing repetitive tasks, such as scooping
ice cream,"Orlova explains. "With the help of
robots, human workers can be freed up to focus
on creative tasks.”
Would you want to order ice cream from
robots? What do you think of Orlova's plan?
How do you think robots will change our daily
lives? What can I do for you?

"I hope to hold my own concert to introduce more people to
Chinese folk music," said Zheng Xiaohui, a Chinese student in
Milan, Italy. In 2023, her wish came true.
In May, Zheng and her classmate Ma Ruomeng gave an open-

Italian song Bella Ciao. “The audience was surprised,”
Zheng recalled."They never thought a Chinese instrument
could play their local music so beautifully.”
Zheng first thought of performing in the street after
watching online videos of street musicians. Inspired by a
violinist in Rome, she decided to try playing the erhu in
public.
Since then, she has received flowers and drawings from
listeners. Once, while performing Bella Ciao in front of the
Milan Cathedral(米兰大教堂),a crowd gathered and
applauded. An older man began to dance, and soon a
younger woman joined in.“It showed me that music has no
boundaries,"Zheng said.
Besides traditional Chinese music, Zheng also plays
Western pop, jazz, and rock on the erhu. Her schoolmate
Ye Peng suggested she share videos online. “Like a

is bringing erhu music to more places in the world,”

for that place.
Over the past 60 years, Fan has walked
through the Mogao Caves(莫高窟)many times.
She has carefully studied every painting and
sculpture. Fan planned and carried out the
largest protection program in the history of the
Mogao Caves. She put forward the idea of building
a “digital Dunhuang”and has also helped to
organize many successful exhibitions of local
arts. "During the day, I think about Dunhuang. At
night, I dream about it. As long as I'm alive, I will
try to protect it,"she once said.
Fan hopes that more young people will
become interested in Dunhuang. She hopes its
relics will always be carefully protected.

A group of men appeared on the Shizilin Bridge(狮子林桥)
in Tianjin, drawing cheers from a large crowd."Splash!"“Splash!”
“Splash!” One by one, they dived off the bridge into the water
below, while spectators watched and applauded.
The divers are part of an amateur diving team in the city. Most
team members are aged over 60,with some having started diving in their youth while others only
picked up the hobby after retirement. "It's all just for fun and exercise,"explained one diver when
asked about their motivation.
Recently, to their surprise, more and more young visitors have been coming to watch them, with
some even expressing interest in trying it themselves. This development has concerned the elderly
divers. The bridge stands about six metres above the water, and the river below is six to seven metres
deep—it's risky for inexperienced divers.
"We've been doing this for years and know the water conditions well,"one senior diver
noted.“But for beginners,it could be dangerous.”The team now finds themselves not only enjoying
their hobby but also having to advise inexperienced not to try. They suggest that interested young
people should first receive proper training.
Every morning, the retired divers continue their routine, carefully stretching their arms and legs
before taking turns diving into the river. Their graceful movements through the air and smooth entry
into the water continue to draw applause from the banks, though they always remember to remind
newcomers:“Safety first, enjoyment second.”

There are hun-
dreds of different
types of birthday
cakes in the world.
You probably ate
one on your last
birthday. But have you ever wondered: Why am I
eating this on my birthday?
Ancient Egyptians were said to have
invented the celebration of birthdays. They
believed that when pharaohs(法老)were
crowned, they became gods. So their coronation
(加冕)day was their "birthday" as a god. There
would be many activities to celebrate this great
day.
Ancient Greeks borrowed this tradition
from the Egyptians. Then they thought that
a dessert would make the celebration more
meaningful. So they baked moon-shaped cakes
to offer to Artemis(阿尔忒弥斯),goddess
of the moon,as a tribute. They decorated the
cakes with candles to make them shine like the
moon.
Modern birthday parties are said to have their
roots in an 18th-century German celebration.
On the morning of a child's birthday,he or she
would receive a cake with lighted candles. The
candles added up to the kid's age, plus one.
This extra candle was called the “light of life”.
It represented the hope that another full year
would be lived.

What do you do with the mango pit(果核)after you eat the
fruit? Maybe you just throw it away like most people? But for
some creative young Chinese people, the pit isn't useless at all.
They can turn it into a lovely little “pet”. No kidding—this is really
happening!
The process of making a mango pit pet is simple and fun. The owner only needs two common
tools: a toothbrush and a hairdryer. First, they use the
toothbrush to carefully clean the pit under running
water, removing all the fruit bits. Next, they gently
dry its natural “hairs” with the hairdryer until it
becomes soft and fluffy(蓬松的). To make the pit
look more like a real pet, some people stick on small
“eyes” made of plastic or paper. Others paint it in
different colours to give it a unique style.
Sounds interesting, doesn't it? But why do these
young people spend time raising such an unusual
"pet”? "It brings me great joy and helps me relax,"
said one owner. "Mangoes are easy to buy from the
market anytime. And unlike a real pet, it doesn't need
food or walks—it's always there for me when I feel
lonely or stressed." This cute trend shows how young
people find fun and comfort in small, creative things,
turning everyday objects into little friends.

1.Why do young people enjoy keeping mango pit pets?

Do you think learning English is difficult? There are about 6,500 languages in the world. Many
people think that some languages are harder to learn than others.A European, for example, may find
it more difficult to learn Japanese than English. Why is this so?
Linguists(语言学家)study the history of the world's languages. They have divided languages
into “families(语系)”. The languages have been put into a “tree”. The distance between two
languages is called their“linguistic(语言的)distance”.
You can look up the “tree” for the foreign language you want to learn. How far is it from yours?
The farther it is, the harder it will likely be for you to learn this new language.
For example,French, Spanish and Hindi(印地语)allbelong to the Indo-European family(印
欧语系).But French and Spanish are in one subgroup(亚群),while Hindi is in another. This means
French is "closer" to Spanish than to Hindi. As a result, most French speakers will find it easier to
learn Spanish than to learn Hindi.
Besides, the effect of this "distance" is mutual. A Chinese person, for example, will face a
certain level of difficulty when learning English. In the opposite direction, when a British person
tries to learn Chinese, he or she will be faced with similar difficulties!

On October 18,a group of young people gathered in a London
park. They waited for the signal and then shouted as loudly as
they could. This was a “Scream Club”event, created to help
participants release stress and feel free.
Scream therapy originally came from the United States and
has recently become very popular on TikTok. During the event, participants first shared what made
them feel sad, angry,or lonely. Then they all screamed together. Though it looked unusual, many
found it fun and helpful. Some passers-by were surprised to see so many people shouting together in
the park.
Most participants were in their twenties. "I didn't realize how much I was holding in until I
screamed,"said one young woman. Mona Sharif, the event organizer, started a TikTok group for
the club. Over a thousand people signed up within just three days, many of them women. A teacher
among them commented, "Women are often told to stay calm under pressure. It feels good to finally
express our feelings freely.”
Through such events, young people find a safe way to let out emotions they usually keep inside,
leaving them feeling relaxed and happy.

We allknow smoking and secondhand smoke are harmful. But
have you heard of thirdhand smoke?
When people smoke, harmful chemicals from the smoke
stick to walls, clothes, and other surfaces long after the smoke is
gone. This is called thirdhand smoke. Experts say it may also be
dangerous to our health.
Doctors are studying thirdhand smoke to understand why some non-smokers still get lung
cancer.A 2013 lab study showed it could even damage human DNA, which might increase the risk
of disease.
Thirdhand smoke can stay for weeks, months,or even years. It can't be removed by simply
opening windows. What's more, when nicotine(尼古丁)in the smoke reacts with air, it can form
cancer-causing substances.
Although it's hard to prove that it directly causes diseases, we should still be careful. Babies and
young children are at higher risk because they often touch objects and then put their hands in their
mouths. Pets may also be affected when they lick their fur.
It's important to be aware of this hidden danger and try to avoid it.

Waikiki(威基基),Hawaii, is known around the world for its
beautiful beaches. On April 14,a Hawaiian monk seal(夏威夷僧海
豹)gave birth to her fifth child on one of the beaches. The 12-year-
old seal is named Kaiwi. She and her baby seal will stay on the
beach for about two months. During this time, Kaiwi will carefully
care for and nurture her young baby there until it is strong enough to live alone.
The Hawaiian monk seal is the most endangered seal species in US waters(水域). There
are fewer than 1,600 of them living in the world today. To protect Kaiwi and her newborn baby,
Hawaiian officials have closed off the beach where they are resting. A temporary fence has been
erected around part of the beach to keep people away. And guards have been patrolling(巡逻)the
beach area and nearby waters day and night to ensure their safety.
Some tourists visiting Waikiki are upset about the closure of part of the beach. But most of them
understand and support the officials'decision. “After all, the beach belongs not only to us humans,
but also to all other animals," said one visitor. Many people feel happy to see the mother seal and
her baby being protected in their natural home.

Have you ever had a cold or flu that was gone, but the cough
stayed for weeks? You're not alone. Many people experience this.
Doctors say some patients cough for up to eight weeks even
after the virus has left their bodies. "We can't detect the virus
anymore,yet they're still coughing,"says expert Michael Shilho.
Why does this happen?Scientists are stillstudying it. They believe it has to do with nerves in
our airways(气道).
Coughing is a natural reflex(反射)that protects our throat from water or food. When nerves in
the airway sense something irritating, they signal the brain to cough.
During an infection, our airways become inflamed(发炎的).This makes the nerves extra sensitive.
Even after we recover, these nerves may stay overly reactive for some time.
As researcher Lorcan McGarvey explains, simple actions like breathing deeply, laughing, or going
out into cold air—things that aren't harmful—can trigger coughing long after the illness is over.
In short, a lasting cough doesn't always mean you're still sick. It may just be your body's nerves
taking time to calm down.
Choose the best answer.

Many people don't like getting up early in the morning, but
most of us have to get out of bed to make money. What if you could
get paid without leaving your bed? Well, a group of 12 volunteers
has just done exactly that.
All the volunteers were between the ages of 20 and 45.
They spent two fullmonths in a special lab in France. There they stayed in bed 24 hours a day
for 60 days without any breaks. That meant no getting up for meals, no showers, and not even
getting up for bathroom breaks. They ate, read, and did everything lying down. How much
were they paid for their unusual “work”? Each person received $18,300!But it's certainly
not easy money, right? Staying in bed for so long can make your body feel weak and stiff
(僵硬的).
These volunteers were part of an important scientific experiment. Scientists conducted the
study to observe changes to the human body during long-term bed rest. Lying down for a long time
is similar to how astronauts'bodies are affected in space, where there is no gravity. The research
may help scientists find better ways to keep astronauts healthy during long space trips. It can also
help people who must stay in bed for long periods due to illness. So, while it might sound like a
simple way to earn money, these volunteers have actually helped advance science through their
unusual effort.

Since I was a kid,I've loved the Harry Potter series.Back in 2017,I started making paper art pieces
of the characters in this series. But I failed—the final pieces didn't turn out the way I wanted them to.
The first movie in the series is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone(《哈利·波特与魔法石》).
It was released in 2001. The year 2021 was its 20th anniversary. To honour it, I re-started my Harry
Potter project during that year.
Of this project, the most difficult part was to show the magical elements. To handle this,I
experimented a lot with different materials. For example,I used vellum(牛皮纸)for the translucent(半透明
的)parts. I brushed nail polish(指甲油)on plastic to make things shiny. AndIeven tried my first 3D piece.
After all the hard work, I finally completed a series of 27 paper art pieces. In making it, both my
creativity and skills have improved. Iloved working on this magical project!
Answer the questions.
1.What kind of artist is Kristy Edgar?
2.Why did she restart her Harry Potter project in 2021?
3.What was the biggest challenge in creating the paper art?
4. Name one special material she used and its purpose.
5.How many paper art pieces did she finally complete?
6. Have you worked hard on a project you loved? What did you learn from the experience?

Last Friday,
our class took a
field trip to the
aquarium. We were
all very excited
about the trip.
There was so much to see at the aquarium.
Our first stop was the penguins'house. The
penguins were cute. They looked funny when
they were walking. However, they looked
graceful when they were swimming. I noticed
that some of them walked together. Others had
baby penguins by their side.
“Why do some of those penguins stay
together?”I asked our teacher Mr. Lin.
"Some kinds of penguins like to stay
together," answered Mr. Lin. “They keep each
other warm and protect their babies."
Then we moved to the next room. There
was a big tank fullof fish. The fish were in
different shapes, colours and sizes. Most of the
fish swam around on their own, but there were
also groups of little fish swimming together.
"Why are those little fish swimming
together?" asked Erica.
"Sometimes small fish swim in a group for
protection," replied Mr. Lin. "If they are alone,
big fish might eat them. But when they swim
together, they look like a big fish. This way, a
real big fish won't realize that the 'big fish’in
front of it is in fact a group of small fish.”
We all learned a lot and had a good time at

I Swallowed
the Planet!”
For the first time, scientists have observed a star swallowing a
planet. The amazing event took place in our Milky Way galaxy(银
河系), near the Aquila constellation(天鹰座). This location is
about 12,000 light years away from our Earth.
In this new study, a team of scientists first noticed a strange
star. Its brightness suddenly increased by more than 100 times over a ten-day period, which caught
their attention.
The scientists looked further at the star through telescopes. They found it to be quite similar to
our Sun in size and type. The star swallowed
a planet over a period of about 100 days. The
planet was a hot gas giant(气态巨行星). Its
mass was similar to that of Jupiter(木星).
The planet was orbiting very close to its star.
It completed an entire orbit around the star in
just one Earth day.
The star nibbled at(蚕食)the planet's
edges as it began to swallow it slowly. In the
final ten days, the rest of the planet fell inside
the star completely. When the planet was
totally destroyed, there was a bright explosion
that made the star shine brightly.
According to scientists, most planets will
meet their end when their star runs out of
energy and expands. Earth will meet a similar
end when our Sun grows old—but not for
another five billion years, so we don't need to
worry now.

Imagine turning a simple block of ice into a flower,a swan, or
even a castle. This is the art of ice sculpting—where frozen water
becomes a canvas(画布)for amazing artworks.
But where did this idea come from? The history of using ice
goes back thousands of years. In the Arctic(北极), the Inuit
people built snow houses long ago. In ancient China, farmers stored ice to keep food fresh. In Rome
and India, rich people enjoyed drinks with ice.
Over time, people began carving ice into different shapes. In the 1600s, fishermen in
Heilongjiang made ice lanterns by freezing water in buckets(桶)and placing candles inside. In 18th-
century Russia,an empress(女皇)even ordered a palace made entirely of ice.
Today, ice sculpting is often taught in cooking schools. It is closely related to fruit and vegetable
carving. This tradition started long ago, when wealthy families used sugar and ice sculptures to
decorate their meals.
Now,ice art is popular worldwide. There are many ice festivals, such as:
● Harbin Ice Festival, China
· Ice Magic Festival, Canada
· Sapporo Snow Festival, Japan
Ice sculpting has even been part of the Olympic cultural events, showing how this frozen art
brings beauty and wonder to people everywhere.

The remains of the Titanic lie deep below the surface of the
Atlantic(大西洋). It is the most famous shipwreck(沉船)in
history. There have been a lot of opinions about its sinking. In the
movie Titanic, the ship hit an iceberg. But was this the whole truth?
Magellan Ltd. has been trying to find out the answer to that
question. They have been doing this with the help of new technologies. For example, remote-controlled
submersibles(潜水艇)have taken photos of the shipwreck from every angle possible. The team
spent more than 200 hours carefully examining and photographing the wreck. In total, they collected
700,000 images. Using these images, the company created the first-ever full-sized 3D model of
the shipwreck,showing every part clearly.
The company hopes that this detailed 3D model will help scientists finally work out what really
sank the Titanic. Researchers can now study the ship without going deep into the ocean.
"There is still much to learn from the wreck," said Parks Stephenson, a Titanic researcher."She
has stories to tell. With this full 3D model, I’m seeing new details that none of us have ever seen
before. This has allowed me to see the shipwreck in a completely new light and understand better
what happened that night."

In May 2024, hail as big as grapefruit fell in Texas. A month
later, people found hailstones almost the size of pineapples. Similar
records are being reported worldwide. Are hailstorms getting
worse?Researchers say yes.
A study from Northern Illinois University shows that larger,
more damaging hail is becoming more common. This is one result of human-caused climate change.
The research predicts that hailstones four centimetres or larger will appear 15to 75more often
in the future, depending on how much greenhouse gas we emit.
Hail forms when raindrops are lifted high into thunderstorms. Strong upward winds carry them
into cold parts of the atmosphere, where they freeze. Moisture in the air then sticks to the ice,
making it grow layer by layer—like an onion.
Why is climate change causing larger hail? Warmer air provides more energy, creating stronger
upward winds. These powerful winds keep hailstones inside storms longer, allowing them to collect
more ice. As study author Victor Gensini explained, "If you want to create a large hailstone, you
really need a strong updraft(上升气流).”
Interestingly, while large hail may become more common, small hail could become less
frequent. As temperatures rise, the freezing level moves higher, so smaller hailstones are more
likely to melt before reaching the ground.

In the past, people explored the oceans to find new trade routes.
Today, we explore to understand the ocean itself.
New technology is helping scientists reach deeper into the
sea. Better submarines, robots, and cameras allow us to go where
humans couldn't go before. A new Chinese vessel(轮船)named
Mengxiang, with the world's deepest drilling(钻探)ability, can now reach 11,000 metres below
the surface. It will help us learn more about the ocean and protect it.
Surprisingly, we know less about the deep ocean than about space. Only three people have
reached the deepest point of the Mariana Trench(马里亚纳海沟),while twelve have walked on the
moon.Although the ocean covers 71of Earth,95of it remains unexplored.
Why is the deep sea so hard to study? The pressure is extremely high—like having 50 jumbo
jets(大型喷气式飞机)on top of you. It is also completely dark, making it difficult to see
anything.
Still, exploring the ocean is important for everyone. It affects our air, food, weather, and climate.
Deep waters contain fish, oil, gas, and rare minerals. They may even provide future medicines.
Understanding the ocean helps us protect our planet and discover new resources.

What did famous people in history—such as William Shakespeare
and Vincent van Gogh—look like? It seems impossible for us to
know. However, Becca Saladin Segovia is working to bring them
back to life.
Segovia is an American artist. She turns paintings and statues of
historical figures into realistic portraits.
"I loved history a lot. But I felt like
it was not so real,"Segovia said.“There
is too much dry content(枯燥无味的内
容).And none of it can show us what
people in history looked like. I like
making them look more realistic. In this
way,we can be reminded that history is
real. It's all about real events and real
people.”
To create her portraits, Segovia
mainly uses Photoshop.AI tools also
help her to do the work. Each portrait
takes her three to eight hours to finish.
Sometimes, she has to spend more time
on a portrait. That's usually because the
design of the figure's clothing includes
many small details.
Segovia also faces some other
difficulties. The biggest of them all is to
find accurate paintings of the figures.
To solve this problem, she usually uses
modern descriptions of the historical
figures to create her portraits.

time. Some of the tools were made of flint(燧石). These sharp stones were once used for hunting
animals and fishing in the river.
Pupils from a local primary school joined the dig to help. They worked with other volunteers to
support the scientists. The young helpers were very excited about their findings. Ten-year-old Niamh
found a small piece of flint in the soil. "I didn't know what it was at first,"she said. “Then a man
told me it was thousands of years old!”Another student added, "It's fun but messy. You have to dig
carefully with your hands in the mud."
An archaeologist said the location was perfect for early people to settle. "It's flat, near the river
for water, with lots of fish and birds for food,"she explained. "It's mind-blowing(令人惊叹的)to
find something this old right here where people live today!” The discovery helps us understand how
ancient people lived in this area.

new element they named Radium(镭).Years later, their 6 was approved by the government,
and they won the Nobel Prize!

Have you ever been fascinated by a beautiful cloud in the sky, or
given a great present that you hadn't expected? These unexpected joys
appear in everyone's life, and Iam no exception.
It was a sunny Sunday morning, and that day was my 9th birthday.
"What am I going to get for my birthday? I wish that mummy could
come back home,”I thought. My mother left home three days before
on a business trip and only my father was at home. The party was fun,
and the games I played with my friends were interesting, but I couldn't help feeling sad.On such a
special day,all I wanted was my mother.
The day soon passed and my friends left. My father was cleaning the messy room. For a long time,
the room was in silence. Finally, my father said, "Shawn! It's time for your birthday present! You
definitely won't know what it is!”I didn't know, that was for sure, and felt pretty curious about it.
“Knock... Knock...”I heard the sound of the door and went to open it. It was my mother! “Happy
birthday, Shawn!" she said and gave me a big hug. I didn't expect that my mother would come home
before the business trip ended. She was my birthday present!
Have you ever had similar amazing moments of unexpected joy in your life? They're really
enjoyable and fun!
Answer the questions.
1.Why was the author sad on his birthday?
2.What was the author's biggest wish for his birthday?
3. What was the father doing after the party?
4. Who was the “birthday present”?
5. What does “unexpected joy” mean in this story?

Dogs are not just pets—they can also help children learn to
read. Research shows that reading with a dog can make a real
difference.
Camille Rousseau, a doctoral student, studied 17 children in
Grades 1 to 3. She asked them to read aloud with a dog and its
handler(引导员)present, and again with only the handler. Before the study, each child was tested
so they could read stories that were slightly challenging.
The results were clear:children spent more time reading and showed greater persistence when a
dog was in the room. They also said they felt more interested and more capable.
Why are dogs so helpful? It may be because they listen without judging. When children make
mistakes, they feel less pressure around dogs. "If they're practicing with a dog, they don't mind
making the mistake,"said Francine Alexander,a children's book publisher.
More schools and libraries are now using therapy dogs in reading programs. Rousseau
hopes her research will help children who struggle with reading. Her study was the first to use
carefully selected challenging books. She continues to study how dogs can support learning in
other ways.

Whenever the weather is nice,my daughters and I take a walk
around the city. One recent Sunday, we set out from Nanyuan Park
(南园公园)in Huangpu District.
When we reached the southern end of the park, we saw some
boys pointing at the Huangpu River and shouting happily. “What
a big ship!"my younger daughter exclaimed as she took a picture.
“Where is it from?”my other girl asked. I looked closely at the ship. Its name,on its stern(船

world's busiest ports,"I said to my daughters. "There are a lot of foreign friends here.”
We walked on and took the ferry from Huajing(华泾)to Sanlin(三林).My younger daughter
was excited about the trip. It was her first time on a ferry.
The ferry station at Huajing has been rebuilt and looks modern. The one at Sanlin is still old.
I took a picture of an old tree there. It was there the first time I took the ferry at Sanlin. I was with
my mother. Now, I was with my daughters. The ships on the river come and go. So do the ferry
passengers. Only the trees have stayed. They look at everything in silence. If they could speak, what
stories would they tell?
We ended our walk at Qiantan(前滩). My girls were tired, but they said they had had a good

A few years ago,I saw an exhibition of Pablo Picasso's sculptures
(雕塑作品). Maybe, because he thought of himself as a painter first,
he was freer to play with the art of sculpture. For example, what
can you do with a pair of bicycle handlebars(把手)and a saddle
(车座)? The Spanish artist turned them into a “bull(公牛)”. The
exhibition brought to mind Picasso's famous quote(引语),“Every child is an artist. The problem is
how to remain an artist once we grow up."
I’m a writer and illustrator(插图画家)of children's books. Sometimes, I go into schools and
read my stories to children. I also draw with them. I show them how to draw the characters in my
books. These children draw
after me. Their drawings,
however, always make
mine seem lifeless. I'm
always surprised by them.
Children just put their ideas
out there. They do not
overthink. Adults worry
about how other people
judge them. They often
think a lot before putting
pen to paper.
Recently, I've been
working with a primary school. I see six-year-olds expressing themselves freely through their
drawings. However, when they leave at the age of eleven, many of them feel uncomfortable about
the act of drawing. They have learned that there is a "right"way to draw, and a “wrong” way. There
isn't. The most important thing is to draw and to express yourself through your work.
Picasso painted and sculpted like a child. He expressed himself freely. He cared little about
what other people thought of him. Perhaps this is why his paintings and sculptures are still
popular today.

My name is Evelyn Jiang. I was born and raised in Indonesia(印度尼西亚), but my family
came from China. My great-grandparents moved to Indonesia many years ago. From the time I
was a little girl, I had the idea to go to university in China.
Ten years ago, I applied to study at Tongji University. I wanted to study in the College of
Architecture and Urban Planning(建筑与城市规划学院). However, I was turned down. So I
decided to study Chinese at Tongji for a year. This would help me to prepare for my application next year.
During that time, I joined a guitar club at Tongji by accident. At our first rehearsal, a student

members. After they graduated, I joined another band called ET. We took part in many different
activities and competitions. We studied during the day and rehearsed in the evening.
However,my fellow band members became busier and busier. We had less and less time to
practice together. I began to enter competitions on my own. I also started writing my own songs.
So far, I have published more than ten songs of my own. One of them is called The Warmest

it was unforgettable. At this bazaar, we sold our 2 things, such as books, toys and so on. But
it was more than that. All the money we received was for donation and that made the whole event
3 .
In order to 4 attention, our class carefully designed a lucky draw and decided to sell goods
in turn. First,my classmate Peter sold a cloth tiger. It symbolizes China's lucky traditional culture.
Then, the raisin scones(提子松饼)Alice made were loved by everyone. What an artist! Next, it
was my 5 .Standing in front of everyone in my class, I felt frightened and nervous 6 then
Jill came to encourage me. She told me to 7 and enjoy it. With her help, I successfully sold
many of my interesting storybooks. How fun that was! The bazaar finished quickly. To my surprise,
we raised 715 yuan altogether. We all hope the money will be of some help to 8 children in
mountainous areas.
There is no 9 that this precious experience enriched my daily life. I learned that 10 is
difficult for anyone who makes the effort.

to get out of my room and spend more time
outside. At first, it was difficult for me. But as
time went by, I started doing more and more

Put landscapes into your suitcase and bring them home. That idea
sounds nice but a little crazy, doesn't it? In fact, Kathleen Vance has
been doing just that.
Vance is not a magician; she is an artist. She is famous for creating
miniature landscapes inside old suitcases. All her pieces use real soil, grass,
plants and water. These works are living and breathing.
Vance grew up on a farm in Maryland. She lived in New York City after graduating from university.
In that big city, she often wanted to get close to nature. She also hoped to bring nature into people's
everyday lives. And so the “Travelling Landscapes”series was born.
By putting nature into boxes, the artist shows that the environment belongs to each one of us.“I
want people to enjoy nature and think about how they would personally be able to protect it. We all
exist on the Earth, and some people are lucky enough to own parts of the land. How they take care of
it is something they should consider," she explained.
Answer the questions.
1. What kind of artworks does Kathleen Vance create?
2. Why did she start making “Travelling Landscapes”?
3. What message does Vance want to share through her art?
4.What materials does Vance use to make her suitcase landscapes real and living?
5.How might Vance have felt about nature while living in New York City?
6.If you could protect one part of nature near your home, what would it be and why?
