Do you think being fat can be a good thing? In Alaska, it sure is! Every year since 2014, the
park has held an online event called Fat Bear Week. People all over the world vote for the bear that
has gained the most weight before winter. The contest is fun. But it also shows how important fat(脂
肪)is for bears to survive.
This year's winner is a huge brown bear named Chunk. At the start of summer, Chunk had a
broken jaw,and many viewers worried he wouldn't be able to eat. But Chunk surprised everyone.
He kept eating salmon(三文鱼)from the Brooks River and grew bigger and bigger.
Brown bears must eat a lot before winter because they hibernate for several months. During this
time, they do not move or eat,so they lose a lot of weight. To survive, they need to be as fat as possible.
Thanks to the thousands of salmon swimming upstream, Chunk had plenty of food. Viewers saw
his amazing change through live(实况转播的)“bear cams(摄像头)”. They compared his "before”
and “after”photos and voted for him again and again. Now Chunk weighs about 544 kilograms. He
is not just the winner of Fat Bear Week—he is a true survivor.
Choose the best answer.
1.Why is gaining weight important for bears in Fat Bear Week?
A.To win a prize and become famous.B. To survive the winter without eating.
C.To attract more tourists to the park. D. To show they are the strongest bears.
2. What made Chunk's victory special this year?
A.He was the youngest bear in the contest.
B.He won with the highest number of votes ever.
C.He overcame a jaw injury to gain enough weight.
D. He travelled the farthest to find food.
3.The underlined word “hibernate” in Paragraph 3 means the bears____.
A.move to warmer places
B.sleep through the winter
C.hunt for more food
D.play in the snow
4. Which is NOT mentioned about how people followed the contest?
A. Watching bears through online cameras.
B.Comparing bears'photos from different times.
C.Visiting the park to see the bears in person.
D. Voting for their favourite bears repeatedly.

“You're an ENFP?! I'm an ENFP,too!”You may have heard
a conversation like this. It's all about the Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator(MBTI) personality test(性格测试).You've probably
seen it online and maybe you've taken a free test yourself.
The MBTI personality test uses four pairs of letters to group
people into 16 personality types. These letter pairs are:
E/I:where you get energy—being with people(E)vs. being alone (I)
S/N:how you take in information—details (S)vs.big ideas(N)
T/F:how you make decisions—logic(逻辑)(T) vs.feelings(F)
J/P:how you deal with plans—organized (J) vs. go with the flow(P)
You answer questions about how you think, feel, and act. After that, you'll get a four-letter
“type”, like ENFPor ISTJ.
MBTI is popular because it's quick, easy, and fun.People often use it as an icebreaker(破
冰方式)to talk about themselves. Friends talk and joke about their types. Some companies even use
it when they're hiring(聘用)people.
But MBTI has a bad side, too. It
labels(贴标签)us. Once someone
has a type, others may start to see
them only through those four letters.
For example,an“I-person”may be
seen as quiet all the time. People may
even use the label as an excuse. They
might think, I'm a“P”,so I cannot
make good plans. Then, they won't
even try.
Four letters can't sum up a whole
person. MBTI can help you learn
about yourself, but don't let it box
you in(束缚).People grow and
change all the time. An “F-person”

can have logical thinking, and an “I-person” can stillspeak up. What matters most is not your type
but your effort and choices.
Choose the best answer.
1. What does the MBTI test do?
A. It tells people their future jobs.
B. It changes people's personalities.
C. It teaches people how to make friends.
D. It puts people into different personality types.
2.According to the MBTI test,a “P”person probably____.
A.prefers to stay alone
B. likes to keep plans flexible
C.follows a detailed plan
D.finishes work long before the deadline
3.According to the article, MBTI can become a problem if____.
A.people see themselves and others as labels
B.people use it to choose friends and workers
C.people change their personalities to fit a type
D.people stop talking to others with different types
4.Which of the following statements would the author most likely agree with?
A.MBTI is useful if you take the test more than once.
B.MBTI is useless because four letters cannot describe anyone.
C.MBTI is helpful as long as people remember it's not everything.
D.MBTI is helpful because it clearly shows how people will act in real life.

Is an AI chatbot(AI聊天机器人)your bestie for homework?
Asking a chatbot is fast and easy, but here's a surprise: Using a
traditional search engine might help you 1 more than asking
AI.
Researchers tested over 10,000 people. They were asked to
research 2 topics, like how to grow a garden or how to lead a
healthier life. Some used AI chatbots while others used 3 web searches. After that, they wrote
down what they had learned as advice for a friend. What happened?People who searched the web
developed 4 knowledge.
Why? Using AI is like riding a bus. You get to the destination(目的地)fast, but you don't
really know the 5 .You just sit and wait for the ride to end. But searching the web is like hiking
on your own. You have to 6 the map, choose the right path, and notice the landmarks like
signs or special buildings. This brain workout(锻炼)helps you really understand and 7 the
information.
The study also found something interesting. Even when the AI chatbots gave links to websites,
75of people did not 8 to click them. They didn't want to learn more once they had the 9
answer.
So,next time you are curious, do not just ask a chatbot for the answer. Be a real 10 !Go
information hunting on the web, and your brain will thank you for the extra work.

Concrete is one of the most common building materials in the
world. However, making concrete causes a lot of pollution. That's
mainly because it uses a huge amount of sand. Sand mining has
always been bad for the environment as it damages rivers and
ecosystems.
A group of Japanese scientists came up with an unusual idea to help reduce this problem. What
if they could replace some of the sand with used disposable diapers(尿布)? The scientists set
about testing out their idea in the lab. To their joy, this new kind of concrete turned out to be just as
safe and strong as regular concrete. They even used it to build a small house as an experiment!
But the scientists quickly realized a practical problem. If used diapers are going to be mixed
into concrete, someone will have to safely collect, clean and store them first. Will this complex
process work in the long run? Even if they could really figure out a solution, you might stillbe
asking yourself: Would I want to live in a house made with diapers? While the idea helps reduce
waste, many people may feel uncomfortable about it.
Choose the best answer.
1.According to the article, what is the main environmental problem with traditional concrete?
A. It is not very strong.
B. It looks unattractive.
C. It costs a lot of money.
D. It uses too much sand.
2.How did the new concrete perform in tests?
A.It was less safe.
B. It was much weaker.
C. It dried more quickly.
D. It was just as strong.
3. What is the biggest challenge for this new idea?
A.Building tall structures.
B. Finding enough scientists.
C. Handling the used diapers.
D.Making the concrete look nice.
4. What is the main purpose of the article?

Beaches in the U.K.are becoming safer for seals! A coastal council has banned plastic flying
rings from local beaches. The rings can be dangerous for young seals. If a seal puts its head through
a ring, it can get stuck. This can cause injuries(伤害)or even death.
The ban is voluntary. That means there will be no fines if someone brings a plastic ring to the
beach. Some big shops near the coast have stopped selling the rings. But people can still play on the
beach using safe toys, like solid frisbees that are not made of plastic.
A wildlife group now wants the government to stop the sale of plastic flying rings across the
country. Many people support this. “"Flying rings are a risk for seals," said an animal lover. “If we
use safer toys, we can help protect these beautiful animals."

Hi,my friends. My name is Jack. When I was a kid, I lived in an orphanage(孤儿院)in
Taiwan, China. I felt lost and was uncertain(不确定的)about my future. But I got lucky. A cycling
team called “Bike Angel” came into my life and changed it forever.
This team was set up by a social worker, Mr.Yang Minzhong(杨民忠). In 2011, he visited my
orphanage. He learned that many of us liked to ride bikes. But we didn't have enough money to buy
our own bikes. Mr. Yang decided to help us realize our dream of travelling by bicycle.
The following summer, Mr. Yang organized a cycling team of 75 people. Among them were 35
young people, including myself. After biking around the island of Taiwan, we cycled from Beijing
to Xiamen. During this 40-day trip, we travelled about 3,200 kilometres. We enjoyed the beautiful
scenery of different cities. In Beijing, for example, we stood at the foot of the Great Wall and visited
the Bird's Nest Stadium. We also developed deep friendships with mainland volunteers(大陆的志
愿者).
After this trip, I became a volunteer for the Bike Angel team. Over the past ten years, more than
900 children and young people from Taiwan, China have taken part in our cycling tours. Thanks to
these trips, many of them found hope and started working hard to create a better life for themselves.
In the future, we will plan more cycling trips. Our final goal is not just to go sightseeing, but to
help young people see the wider world and challenge themselves!

In 2004,a four-year-old boy named Aristo Sham played
Mozart's music at the Shanghai Concert Hall, earning him the
nickname “Little Mozart”. Now 21 years have passed, and he
is back again—but this time, as a world champion(世界冠军)
pianist!
The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition(范·克莱
本国际钢琴比赛)is like the “World Cup” of piano. In 2025,29-year-old Aristo won first prize.
He is now only the second Chinese pianist to achieve this.
Aristo said the timing was just right. "IfI had won earlier,I might not have been ready," he said.
"Now I understand music more deeply, and I know what I want to do next. Patience turned out to be
a good thing!”
Aristo started his music journey early. At the age of 10, he won a prize in an international
contest in Germany. Like Lang Lang, who also gained early recognition in international contests.
People called Aristo a child prodigy. But he said that name sometimes felt heavy. "People still
remember me as a kid,"he said. "But I hope they see who Iam now.”
Unlike what many people think, Aristo never practised all day. He plays the piano for no more
than four hours a day. “The key is to stay 100ocused,"he said.“You should make the best use of
every minute."Aristo believes
that rest is also very important.
Sometimes, he even takes two
weeks off to let his mind and
body fully relax.
On November 8,2025,
Aristo returned to the Shanghai
Concert Hall for his first show
after winning the Van Cliburn
competition. He played his
winning piece and brought us
some truly wonderful music.

Andrzej Bargiel, a 37-year-old skier from Poland(波兰),
has just made history. He climbed up Mount Qomolangma and
skied all the way down. What's more, he did it without using extra

Mount Qomolangma is the highest mountain in the world. At
the top of the mountain, the air is very thin. It is hard for climbers
to breathe. Most people use bottled oxygen to help
them breathe while climbing. But Bargiel did not.
He said, "It was very hard. I had never been so high
before. Skiing down Mount Qomolangma without
oxygen was my dream."
So far, more than 6,000 people have successfully
climbed the mountain. But only about 200 have done it
without bottled oxygen. Some people have skied down
part of it, but no one skied down the whole way before
Bargiel.
In an interview,Bargiel said, "Before I went,
no one believed I could do it. Even my brother

International Stuttering Awareness Day falls on October 22 every year. How much do you know
about this speech disorder(言语障碍)? Millions of people around the world live with stuttering.
However, there are still many wrong ideas about these people and their condition. Let's try to
correct some of these wrong ideas!
● Stutterers are not smart.
Many smart people stutter. Stuttering is linked to a certain area of the brain. However, it doesn't
affect a person's intelligence.
· Are you too nervous?
Nervousness or shyness may cause stutterers to speak less. But they are not the root cause of
stuttering. People who stutter might be afraid of being judged by others. So let them know that they
can trust you.Be patient and don't cut them off. Wait for them to get to the end of their sentence.
● It's just a habit.
Stuttering is not a habit. One can't easily stop stuttering, either. People who stutter may attend
speech therapy(治疗)classes. But these courses don't promise a cure(治愈)for their condition.
They are more about helping the person to build up the confidence to speak.
Answer the questions.
1.According to the article, does stuttering mean a person is not smart?
2. What should you do when talking to someone who stutters?
3. Why is stuttering NOT just a habit?
4. What is the real purpose of speech therapy for people who stutter?
5.When is International Stuttering Awareness Day?

What do you do when you want more LEGO bricks(乐高积
木)but don't have enough money to buy them? A seven-year-old
boy named Austin from Auckland(奥克兰)had a clever idea—he
started his own T-shirt company!
Austin created fun characters like a robot called Sus-bot and
The Monster That Ate My Cheese. He wanted to put the characters on his T-shirts. At first, he drew
them by hand. But his drawings didn't look as cool as the ideas in his head.
That's when Austin and his mum found a new way to bring the drawings to life. They learned to
use AI tools to create colourful designs. They tried different colours, fonts(字体),and styles until
the T-shirts looked perfect.
Now Austin picks shirt colours, makes online posts, and even helps press(烫印)the designs
onto the T-shirts. He has sold his T-shirts at markets and also started his own website.
Austin's favourite part? Seeing people happily wearing his T-shirts. "It doesn't matter

In cold weather, we often miss the warmth of summer. If only
we could store the summer heat for the cold winter months! Believe
it or not, a new technology has made this idea 1 —by using a
lot of sand.
Have you ever been to a beach on a hot day? If so, then
you'llknow how sand can feel like it's 2 your feet. In fact, sand can be heated to very high
temperatures. It is also very good at 3 that heat. For this reason, some Finnish engineers have
4 a seven-metre-tall sand battery. This large battery tower is 5 with about 100 tons of sand.
The engineers used some solar panels to 6 electricity. The sand can be heated by electricity
to about 500 degrees Celsius(摄氏度)and stay hot for several months. 7,the energy stored
in summer can be used in winter. The heat can be used to warm homes, offices and 8 local
swimming pools.
This green energy technology is still being 9 in Finland. The engineers want to spread it to
the world as soon as possible. They hope this technology can help 10 the use of fossil fuels.

Humans need bees to help grow plants. When these insects visit
flowers, they collect pollen(花粉).Without bees moving pollen from
one flower to another, many plants can't grow fruits.
In recent years, scientists have noticed a sharp drop in bee numbers.
What has happened? In brief, the insects have lost their food source.
As humans have taken over more and more land for cities, natural areas have disappeared. Take
England for example. It has lost about 97 percent of its wildflower fields since World War Ⅱ.
To help out bees, Britain is building “bee bus stops”across the country. These bus stops look
ordinary. But there's a small garden on each of their roofs. The gardens are full of flowers. They
attract bees. Because the soil for these gardens is heavy, gardeners have to take care of them twice a
year. Other than that, not much is needed to keep the gardens going.
The idea of bee bus stops isn't new.Several years ago,the Netherlands turned more than 300
of its bus stops into bee bus stops. This project is working. Bee numbers have grown since these
bus stops were put into place, according to research. This is certainly good news for the British
government.
Answer the questions.

2. What is the main reason for the drop in bee numbers according to the article?
3.How do "bee bus stops"help bees?
4.Why do gardeners only need to take care of the bee bus stop gardens twice a year?

But there are still problems. People are cutting
down trees, and the weather is getting hotter. These
changes can hurt the forest.
The Amazon is the biggest rainforest in the world.
It is home to thousands of animals and plants. It is often

Last December 22,my parents and I arrived in Iceland for a

December. The sun doesn't rise until about an hour before noon
and sets at around 4 p.m. The next morning, when we left for our
glacier hike(冰川徒步旅行)at 8 am., it was very dark. It felt like
we were travelling at night
Before the hike, our guide asked us to put on protective helmets(防护头盔)and special shoes.
This way, we wouldn't fall or get hurt easily while walking on the ice. Our guide led us on our climb
up the glacier and on our visit to a huge ice cave(冰洞). The cave was so cool!
On the third day, we visited an old lava tunnel(熔岩隧道). Iceland is home to more than 130
volcanoes(火山). The tunnel had been formed by a volcanic eruption(爆发)a long time ago.
The dried lava formed many interesting shapes.
Around 1 a.m. on our fourth day, we were allin a deep sleep when the hotel front desk woke us
up with a Northern Lights alarm call(叫醒电话).We put on our warm clothing, ran downstairs and
saw the Northern Lights! The green, purple, red and yellow lights were displayed in many amazing

preserving food had spread to Japan. The
Japanese began to eat the rice with the fish. In

As an actress, Michelle Yeoh is often seen on the big screen.
However, the Malaysian(马来西亚人)always wants people to see
her differently.
Yeoh started out in Hong Kong. That was forty years ago.
Back then, actresses could usually only play young, helpless
women. Most of the time, they were seen being protected by men—their “heroes”. Yeoh wanted
something different. She wanted to be a “hero” and kick people in the face. The actress worked hard
to learn martial arts(武术). She started to play alongside Jackie Chan(成龙)and Jet Li(李连杰).
And people started to see her differently.
Yeoh quickly became famous in Asia. Soon, she began to get calls from Hollywood. The actress
was excited. But when she got there, she felt let down. Most people in Hollywood were white. They
cared little about people from other cultures. For an Asian actress, chances were rare.
But Yeoh tried to be seen differently. In 1997, she
starred in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies
People saw a very different “Bond Girl(邦女郎)”. Instead
of waiting to be saved, Yeoh's character saved 007's life.
She could do the same thing as the man.
Few believed someone from Asia could win the
Oscar for Best Actress. On March 13,2023, however,
Yeoh did just that. She made history for her performance
in Everything Everywhere All at Once(《瞬息全宇宙》).
People around the world now see Yeoh differently.
And because of her, they see Asian actors and actresses
differently.
Most teenagers today like young actors and
actresses. They are unlikely to idolise(崇拜)Yeoh(she's
in her sixties). But now that you've found out more
about her, do you see her differently?

Koalas will soon have a new safe home in Australia. The
government has come up with a plan for a Great Koala National
Park. They say it will help protect koalas in the wild. The park

quarters the size of Shanghai!
The park will ink many smaller parks in New South
Wales(新南威尔士州). For now, cutting down trees

Koalas look cute and sleepy. But their life
in the wild is hard. They're at risk of extinction.
Experts say koalas could disappear by 2050 if nothing
is done.
Not everyone is happy about the plan. Some
timber(木材)workers worry about losing jobs. The
government says it will pay workers during the ban. It
willalso create new jobs in the park.
Nature lovers, however, are excited. They say the
park can protect more than 12,000 koalas. One scientist
called it“great news for koalas and for people, too”.

For 100 years, the Perito Moreno Glacier did not change much.
But now,it is getting smaller faster than ever before.
The glacier used to be held tightly by a big rock. Now,it is
slowly losing contact with the rock. This is causing more ice pieces
to break off. The glacier is moving backwards little by little.
Scientists are
watching closely. They flew over the glacier with
special tools to measure the ice. They also used
satellites to watch it from space. They say the glacier
is melting because the Earth is geting warmer. This
slow change is an important sign of climate change.
Every year, many visitors come to see this
beautiful glacier. It is part of a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Visitors watch big pieces of ice break
off and fall into the lake below. The loud crack(噼
啪声)and splash(泼溅声)are exciting to hear.
But melting glaciers can make sea levels rise. This
can cause problems for people who live near the
ocean.

In 2016,a documentary called China's van Goghs(《中国梵
高》)made Dafen village popular. It's a small village in Shenzhen.
From van Gogh to Rembrandt(伦勃朗), the village made almost
70 percent of the world's art copies. No wonder people call it the
“First Oil Painting Village in China”.
But things are not easy for Dafen these years. Since 2018,its art sales have gone down. In 2020,
sales even dropped by half. The village had to face a fact: It was time to change. So, the painters
began to try new ways to make a living.
Instead of copying, many started to create their original works. Zhao Xiaoyong was one of
them. Eight years ago, he started making his own art. And this year, he held his first exhibition in
Shenzhen. The show had around 40 of his original works.
Zhao is just one of many in the village. Dafen used to have over 1,800 workshops, but many
of them have closed over the years. The rest no longer sell cheap copies. They now take high-end
orders like painting portraits or making their own art.
Dafen has also grown popular with young people and tourists. Many workshops have become coffee
shops or art stores. For only 50 yuan, visitors can try their hand at painting or even making their own pottery.
Dafen village is opening a new and exciting story. What will it become next? Will it keep
changing?Or willitbe forgotten? Only time can tell.

the chambers,"said an Egyptian official(官员),“for example, by reducing the stress from the weight
of the building materials on the pyramid."
The discovery was part of the ScanPyramids project. The project began in October 2015.A group of
scientists from across the world are taking part in it. Thanks to modern technology, they're now able
to “see” the internal structures of the pyramid. We expect more discoveries in the near future.

In Madagascar(马达加斯加), farmers have cut down large
areas of the rainforest. They did this to make more farmland for
growing food. Some bats used to live in this rainforest. After the
trees were 1,the bats did not fly away to a new home. 2,
they now live in the few trees that are left nearby. Every night, they

The results were 7 .Rocha's team found that the animals were eating many harmful pests.
This means that the bats are actually helping the farmers. They keep the crops 8 and help
farmers produce more food. The bats also eat insects that can spread diseases to humans, which
helps keep people healthy.
Now, Rocha is sharing these important findings with local farmers. He teaches them about all the
good things bats bring. He hopes that once farmers understand this, they will stop 9 more trees.
That way, bats and many other animals can be better protected and 10 to live in the area.

We human beings make friends with each other, but it's not just
us. Different animals can also become good friends. Tanja Brandt,
a falconer(训隼者),shared the friendship story of her pet dog
and a little owl.
Poldi, the owl,met the dog,Ingo, when Brandt adopted the owl
and brought him home. A friendship soon started between the two animals. They enjoy taking walks
together. Sometimes they sit comfortably in the grass as the owl rubs his body against the dog's face.
And when the owl wants attention, he might give Ingo a quick bite on the ear.
Though he is small, the bird often acts as Ingo's bodyguard. Once, they were on a walk in
the forest with Brandt. There was another owl shrieking(尖叫)above their heads. Poldi then
shrieked right back at it.“It was as if he were saying, 'Back off from my friend’,”Brandt explained.
According to Brandt, “Poldi may have been smaller, but he was the boss.”
Answer the questions.
1.What are the names of the owl and the dog in the story?
2. How did the owland the dog become friends?
3.What does the owl do when he wants the dog's attention?
4.Why did Poldi shriek at the other owl in the forest?
5.According to Brandt, who was the “boss” in this friendship?
6. Have you ever seen animals become friends? Tell us about it.

Hello,
Sniffer
Squirrels!
WEEK
14
Sniffer dogs now have some competition. Police in Chongqing have managed to train a group
of six squirrels to sniff out drugs.
"The squirrels have a good sense of smell," said their trainer Yin Jin.“Thankfully, we now have
better ways of training them." Once they find drugs in, for example,a box,the animals will use their
claws to scratch the box.
In China, there are already more than 120 species of sniffer dogs. Why then are we taking
the time to train squirrels? It's partly because they're smaller than dogs. They grow to about 21
centimetres in length. This allows them to get into tiny spaces easily. What's more, squirels can live
up to 15 years in captivity.
The six squirrels are now ready to begin work.Wish them all the best in their new job!

Spring is an amazing season. Its arrival is celebrated by
children and adults alike.
Spring is a season of new beginnings. As the days become
longer and warmer, the Earth slowly comes back to life. Trees start

By Larry White
In Canada,my country, winter is long. For months, there is only a dull landscape(景色)like
an old photograph. Nature is quiet, sleeping, waiting. Then things begin to change.
One week, the lawn(草坪)in front of my house is blanketed with snow. The next week, the
snow has become small white islands in a sea of green grass. As people unwind their thick scarves, I
begin to see many lovely smiling faces again, too.
There is a nature path near my home.As I walk there, I can feel the Earth vibrate(颤动).Seeds
are opening up and the new growth is pushing its way to the surface. In a week, perhaps two, the
path will be a long carpet of tiny blue and yellow flowers.
This is the miracle of spring. It is the miracle of new life and the miracle of new hope—hope for

What do you see when you look up at the sky?If you do this on

Judge imagines clouds as many different characters. Sometimes the shapes are easy to see,and
other times he needs to use his imagination. He now often finds faces in unexpected places. But no
matter what, the artist doesn't want his doodles to end up covering up too much of the cloud."So I

In many ways, Alena Analeigh is just like you.The girl is thirteen years old. She enjoys singing,
watching movies and chatting with her friends. But in at least one way, Alena is very much unlike
other teenagers. The American girl is now studying medicine(医学)at a university. Her dream is
to use her knowledge to help people in need.
Alena showed an interest in STEM at an early age. (“STEM” is short for science, technology,
engineering and maths.) She is always hungry for knowledge. When she was in fifth grade, the girl
started to attend high school-level classes online after school. She “flew through”many hard books.
Learning new skills was like a walk in the park for her.
But Alena is not a bookworm. A year and a half ago, she started the “Brown STEM Girls”
programme. Of all the scientists and engineers in America today, only about 30 percent are women.
Alena wants to change this. Through this programme, she is helping many other girls like her to
experience success.
What can you learn from Alena's story? Must you also attend high school or university-level
classes after school?Of course not. But now you know that age is just a number. You are not too
young to do anything. Just think about what you are able to do as a teenager. Then, put your heart
and mind into it.
Answer the questions.

2. What is the name of the programme Alena started, and what is its goal?
3.Why does the author say"age is just a number"?
4.According to the article, what is the main lesson we can learn from Alena?

Plato asked his teacher what love was.
Socrates said, “Go across this field and

After a long time, the student came back
with nothing. Sadly, he said, "I did see the best

there would be some better ones ahead. So I
gave it up. As I moved on,there was nothing
better than the one that came before."
Socrates replied, "This is love. It's the best
thing that can happen to us. But we usually
don't realize its value until it's gone.”
A few days later, Plato asked Socrates
what happiness was. Socrates told his student
to go across the field again and pick the most
beautiful flower this time.
Soon afterwards, Plato returned with a
pretty flower. He said with a smile, "When I
walked across the field, I saw this flower and
picked it. Even though there were many other
beautiful flowers, I still believed this was the
prettiest one.”

Recently, three brothers set a world record by rowing across
the Pacific Ocean. Altogether, they travelled more than 14,000
kilometres. People cheered excitedly when they finally reached land.
The brothers are now the first team ever to finish this journey.
The trip was very difficult. Strong storms hit their small boat.
At one point, one of the brothers fell off the boat. But he climbed
back safely. Food once ran low. They had to row harder to reach land to get food. Despite all
these difficulties, they finished the trip in just 139 days. More than 50 family members and
friends were waiting to welcome them back. The brothers waved flags happily as they arrived.
People hugged them and cheered.
The brothers broke the old record of 160 days. It was set by a Russian rower(俄罗斯划船手)
in 2014.
But for the brothers, the journey wasn't just about records. They also raised more than $1.6
million. They planned to use the money to bring clean water to 40,000 people.
"This journey is the hardest thing we've ever done," said the brothers right after arriving. "We
feel happy but really tired."They added that the journey also taught them to enjoy simple things in
life—like taking a shower or sleeping in a bed.

“Dad, are you happy today?”My younger daughter asked me
as I picked her up from school on March 20.
"Am I happy?”I tried to answer her question. “Why are you
asking this?”
"Today is the International Day of Happiness," she replied. “It's
a day to be happy!”
“So did you have a happy day?”
“Of course! I learned how to draw a picture of bamboo today.”
“Good,”I said. “If you are happy, then I am, too.”
My daughter nodded with a smile. She seemed happy about my answer. But the conversation
made me think deeply about happiness.
What is happiness? How can I get it? It's hard to answer these two questions. Maybe I should
feel happy when my wife praises my cooking. But I know she's very kind. I know I’m not really a
good cook. The more I think this way, the less happy I feel. Maybe I should feel happy whenever my
daughters tell me that they had a good day at school. But when they think I'm interested in their day;
they'll talk and talk about it. Then, I often have to stay up late to write my articles. I'll feel tired—
and unhappy.
My daughters don't think so much about happiness. And they seem to be happy on most days.
They are happy when their teachers praise them. They are happy when I take them to the zoo (they
love animals).
Perhaps I can learn something from my daughters(and from you, too) about how to be happy.
Perhaps I'll feel happier ifI stop thinking too much about happiness.
Choose the best answer.
1.What was the special day when the conversation happened?
A.Father's Day.
B. The International Day of Happiness.

A.thinks his wife is just being kind

Happy
Birthday,
Sister!
16
Hi, everyone! Glad to meet you all. My name is Bob. I want to share with you one of my
experiences during the summer holidays. It was about helping my parents prepare a surprise party.
Last Saturday was my younger sister Lucy's eighth birthday. Early in the morning, Mum took
Lucy to visit my grandparents. This way, Lucy wouldn't know about the surprise we had planned for
her. Dad and I stayed at home. We first cleaned up the house. Then, we decorated our living room with
colourful balloons and flowers. The room looked beautiful and bright. At last, Dad placed a big cake
on the table in the living room. And I put eight candles on the cake.
We had sent invitations to some relatives and friends on WeChat. In the afternoon, all the guests
arrived. When Lucy came home with Mum and my grandparents, she was surprised. My little sister
was very happy to see all of these guests in our house!
In the evening, the party started. Mum led Lucy to her birthday cake, and I lit the candles on it.
Everyone then began singing"Happy Birthday" to her. When the song was over, the birthday girl
blew out the candles. We then ate the cake, gave her presents and had a great time together. Lucy
was all smiles! I was also very happy to have successfully helped to prepare her birthday party!

Friendship
is an import-
ant part of life,
but not every
child is good at
making friends.
That is OK. Making friends is a skill that can
be learned. Here is some helpful advice.
Build your conversational skills
Learning how to have conversations with
others is a skill that you will need. To start a
conversation, you can use simple questions like
"What do you do for fun?"or "Do you have any
pets?”. Don't ask questions that are too private.
Work on your social skills
Part of being a good friend is having good
social skills. You need to learn to empathize
with others. For example, you could make
cookies for a child whose pet is sick. Taking
time to show someone that you care is a great
way to make a new friend.
Don't be sad if you don't have many
friends. Maybe that's because you don't have
enough chances to meet them. Try to play with
children who have similar hobbies. It is a great
way to find new friends. With a little practice
and patience, you will soon have a friend or
two.
I.Choose the best answer.
1.According to the article, which of the following is not needed for people to make
friends?
A. Social skills.

Last month, I asked some of my students about their future plans. One of them told me he
wanted to study computer science. When I asked him why, he answered, "Because I’m good at it."
"What if you weren't good at it? What if you always got C's?”I asked."That's impossible. I always
get good scores in computer science.”
I was a bit disappointed at his answers. This student does have the ability to do well in
computer science. However,he may not become an expert ifhe never fails. Does this sound strange?
Well, believe me—until you fail at something, you may never know if you truly want to keep
working hard at it.
An artist friend of mine was once rejected from a master's degree(硕士学位)programme. The
failure left him heartbroken. But he didn't want to give up. He waited for two years and tried again.
This time, he was accepted. He knew he was lucky, so he worked harder. A few years later, his art
became popular. Even The New York Times wrote about him.
Early success, on the other hand, can be a bad thing. When I was a teenager, my teachers
praised everything I wrote. I could get high marks on my writing without really trying. In college,I
felt I had nothing to learn about writing. I cared litle about others'views on my articles. After college,I
worked as a writer. Iexperienced failures and criticism. That was when I really started to grow.
I hope that student of mine will have greater success in computer science. But more importantly,
I hope he will be able to keep working hard at it even if he fails sometimes.
Answer the questions.
1. Why was the author disappointed at the student's answer?
2. What did the artist friend do after his failure?
3. Why was the author's early success in writing a bad thing?
4.Do you think failure is a necessary part of success? Why or why not?

Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and
nine. Twenty-three trained dogs and their trainers also took part
in the experiment. The children were divided into three groups. The
students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer.
They did this twice a week for four weeks. The second group spent the
same amount of time doing relaxation exercises. The last group did neither ofthese things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students'cortisol levels(皮质醇水平). Cortisol is
a stress hormone(激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body.
What did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The
first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children had the lowest cortisol levels right
after playing with the dogs.
But here comes the next question: Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time?
Scientists are going to keep working to find out the answer.
Answer the questions.
1.How old were the children in the study?
2. What does the amount of cortisol in our bodies tell us?
3. Which group of children had the lowest stress levels after four weeks?
4. Why do you think scientists are going to do more research?
5. What is the main finding of this study?
6.What is your favourite way to relax when you feel stressed? Why?

Once upon
a time, there
was a man who
had four sons.
One day, he
told each of his
sons to go and see what a pear tree looked like
during winter, spring, summer and autumn.
After a year,he gathered them together to ask
them what they had seen.
The first son answered that the tree had
been bare and ugly.
The second son said, "No! It was covered
with new green leaves. The tree had bright
hopes."
The third son shook his head.He said
the pear tree had been full of flowers. They
smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful.
"There were many pears on the tree, but no
flowers," the fourth son disagreed. “I saw the
joy of a good harvest."
The man then said to his sons that they
were all right. They got different answers
because each of them had seen only one season
in the life of the pear tree.
"You cannot judge a tree,a person or your
life by just one season. If you give up in the
winter, you will miss the hope of your spring,
the beauty of your summer and the harvest of
your autumn."
I.Answer the questions.
1.What did the man ask his four sons to do at the beginning of the story?
2.According to the first son,the pear tree was full of hope, wasn't it?
3. What had the fourth son seen on the pear tree?
4. Who got the right answer to the father's question?
5. Why did the four sons give different answers to their father's question?
6. What can you learn from the story? Write at least two sentences.
